The Dolphins will be kicking off their 2016 season, following an extremely early bye week. 2 - For the second straight week, Liberty is facing a head coach making his debut with a new team. Ian Shields takes the helm at Jacksonville after serving as head coach at Lenoir-Rhyne the last two years. He inherits a team coming off of backto-back 9-2 seasons and featuring two Preseason All-Pioneer Football league picks in RB Ulysses Bryant and LB Grady Redding. 3 - Jacksonville is the second of three straight first-time opponents Liberty is facing to start the 2016 season. The Dolphins will be the third Florida-based opponent the Flames have met on the gridiron, along with UCF and USF. 4 - Although Liberty has never played a Pioneer Football League opponent, Jacksonville will become the fourth league member with whom the Flames are acquainted. Liberty went 1-1 versus Dayton and 5-3 against Morehead State prior to the Pioneer Football League s first season of competition (1993). Meanwhile, league member Campbell is coached by former Liberty assistant Mike Minter. Last Meeting with an Opponent from Florida Sept. 28, 2002 UCF 48, Liberty 17 Orlando, Fla. (Citrus Bowl) UCF recorded its first win of the 2002 season with a victory over Liberty in the Knights home opener at the Citrus Bowl. UCF took the lead just 1:10 into the game, with a 68-yard TD pass from Ryan Schneider to Doug Gabriel. Liberty countered with a 22-yard Jay Kelley field goal late in the first quarter before UCF broke the game open. The Knights scored 41 unanswered points during the middle two quarters, including three more TD passes by Schneider. Liberty notched two TDs in the fourth quarter, including a 49-yard fumble return by Lee Bishop and a 6-yard pass from Kyle Painter to Paul Malniczak. The Flames offensive leader was Eugene Goodman, who totaled eight carries for 80 yards. Today s Matchup 3 Dolphin Connections Liberty freshman NG DeCarlo Hamilton and Jacksonville R-So. DB Thomas Oporto both played at American Heritage High School in Plantation, Fla. Twelve Flames hail from Florida, including redshirt freshman CB Malik Matthews from Jacksonville (Potter s House Christian Academy) and sophomore CB Jeremy Peters from Green Cove Springs (Clay High School). Conversely, only one Dolphin is a Virginia native. Freshman WR Michon Sobers hails from Alexandria. Jacksonville defensive coordinator Rich Ellerson has spent time as head coach at Southern Utah (1996), Cal Poly ( ) and Army ( ). Meanwhile, two Liberty assistants have Division I head coaching experience, in Dennis Wagner (Western Carolina, ) and Scott Downing (Northern Colorado, ). Jacksonville safeties/special teams coordinator Greg Newhouse coached from with the B.C. Lions of the CFL. Liberty has had four players go on to compete for B.C., including current Lion Hunter Steward. Flames in Home Openers Liberty is all-time in home openers, including victories in 12 of its last 13 home openers. The Flames lone loss during that span came at the hands of Norfolk State in The Flames have won their last three home openers by an average of 24.7 ppg. Competing Against the Sunshine State Liberty is 3-12 all-time against opponents from Florida, including 2-3 in Lynchburg. The Flames are 3-8 versus UCF and 0-4 against USF. Liberty s most recent matchup with a Florida-based opponent was a setback at UCF on Sept. 28, The last time a Sunshine State opponent visited Williams Stadium was Sept. 19, That day, USF edged Liberty, 24-21, on a game-ending 44- yard FG by Bill Gramatica. Liberty s last win over a Florida foe was a 7-6 victory at No. 19 UCF on Oct. 14, The Flames won the game on a six-yard TD run by Lawrence Worthington with just 2:08 remaining. Liberty also limited UCF QB Daunte Culpepper to just 100 yards on 9-of-25 passing for the game. Since that game, Liberty has lost six straight meetings with Sunshine State opponents.
