West Virginia was a member of the BIG EAST Conference the first time the Flames faced the Mountaineers (2009). Liberty Head Coach Turner Gill is familiar with Big 12 football, from his time as an assistant coach at Nebraska ( ) and as the head coach at Kansas ( ). 2 - Liberty junior tight end Will Johnson spent two seasons (2012 and 2013) on the West Virginia football roster, but never saw game action for the Mountaineers. 3 - No current Liberty players hail from West Virginia, but the Mountaineers roster includes three Virginia natives. These include Gary Jennings (Stafford), Brendan Willis (Centreville) and Dayron Wilson (Woodbridge). Jennings and Liberty freshman DL Javon Frazier were football and basketball teammates at Colonial Forge H.S. 4 - West Virginia junior kicker Josh Lambert hit four 50+-yard field goals and an NCAA-record yard field goals in 2014, earning All-America honors. Meanwhile, Liberty senior kicker John Lunsford nailed six 50+-yard field goals a year ago, garnering All-America recognition of his own. Lambert made all three of his field goals during this year s season opener, while Lunsford connected from 52 yards versus Delaware State. Last Meeting with West Virginia Sept. 5, 2009 West Virginia 33, Liberty 20 Morgantown, W.Va. (Milan Puskar Stadium) The only previous gridiron clash between Liberty and West Virginia came during both teams 2009 season opener. Liberty tied the score at on a 20-yard TD pass from Tommy Beecher to Mike Brown early in the second quarter. The Mountaineers responded with 13 unanswered points to close out the first half, taking the lead for good. Brown, who accounted for both Flames touchdowns, caught 11 passes for 157 yards and returned three kickoffs for 107 yards. Noel Devine starred for West Virginia, racking up 112 rushing yards and a touchdown on just 17 carries. Quarterback Jarrett Brown threw for 243 yards and ran for 69 more. The game was played before a crowd of 57,950 at Milan Puskar Stadium, the largest attendance ever at a Liberty football game. Liberty is scheduled to face its second Big 12 foe in 2017, when the Flames travel to Baylor. Liberty Head Coach Turner Gill has recorded one win over a Big 12 opponent as a head coach, a Kansas victory over Colorado on Nov. 6, Flames vs. the FBS Liberty has recorded three wins over FBS opponents all-time, including triumphs over Eastern Michigan (1989), Ball State (2010) and Appalachian State (2014). The Flames are 1-4 against FBS opposition under Turner Gill. Liberty will also face FBS foe Georgia State in 2015, traveling to the Georgia Dome on Oct. 3. Flames on the Road Liberty won four of its last five road games to close out the 2014 season, highlighted by victories at No. 2/1 Coastal Carolina and No. 15/15 James Madison (FCS Playoffs first round). The Flames finished 5-3 away from home in 2014, improving to 9-9 in road contests under Turner Gill. Liberty will play four straight road tilts between Sept. 26 and Oct. 17. Flames vs. West Virginia teams Liberty is 14-2 all-time against West Virginia varsity squads, including 5-0 vs. Concord, 4-0 vs. Glenville State, 0-1 vs. Marshall, 1-0 vs. West Liberty State, 0-1 vs. West Virginia, 3-0 vs. West Virginia Tech and 1-0 vs. West Virginia Wesleyan.
