1 Men s Basketball Rice returns eight players from last season, including three starters. The Owls lose top scorers Tamir Jackson and Julian DeBose but bring back the remainder of the full-season squad. Among the returnees are Conference USA allfreshman selection Max Guercy and three-point sharpshooter Austin Ramljak. Rice brings back 66.1 percent of its assists, 61.8 percent of steals, 54.7 percent of rebounding and 53.6 percent of scoring from last season. A bulk of the scoring lost belongs to graduate Tamir Jackson, who finished his career in the program s top 10 for numerous categories. With seven total newcomers joining the young team, Rice will utilize the summer months to begin coming together as a team with the foreign tour, including 10 practices in advance of the trip. Canada Summer Tour (Vancouver / Whistler) July 30 - August 5, 2013 Noting the Owls Ben Braun enters his sixth season as head coach at Rice and 37th overall. His 608 career wins rank first among Conference USA coaches, 10th among active NCAA coaches and 40th all-time. Rice continued its tradition of academic excellence last season, placing two players on the Conference USA all-academic team in Ramljak and Seth Gearhart. It was the fourth year in a row the the Owls placed two players on the five-member team. The Owls were one of the youngest teams in the nation in , entering the campaign with just six years of NCAA Division I experience (Tamir Jackson led the team with three seasons). This season, Rice brings back nine seasons worth of experience, led by two each from Gearhart and Dan Peera. Ramljak carried the team tradition of winning the C-USA Scholar-Athlete of the Year honor. He was the sixth Rice men s basketball player in a row to win the award, the league announced in July. Additionally, Rice was honored by the NABC over the summer, earning the inaugural Team Academic Excellence award, which recognizes teams that boast a 3.0 or better GPA. The Owls were one of just 21 NCAA Division I teams to be recognized. Ramljak and Bahrom Firozgary garnered individual accolades from the NABC as well, as the pair was named to the NABC Honors Court, which awards juniors and seniors with cumulative GPAs of 3.2 or higher. The squad averaged 82.9 points per game and won 18 of its first 20 games in Forward Brylle Kamen is the team s top returning scorer after notching 11.6 points and 9.4 rebounds last season. Head coach Kevin Hanson enters his 14th season at the helm, having won more than 300 games with his alma mater. Scouting the Fraser Valley Cascades Head coach Adam Friesen enters his second year as head coach of the Cascades after last season s mark, including a record in conference action. The Cascades averaged 76.7 points per game on 41.7 percent shooting, with nearly 45 percent of the team s field goal attempts coming from beyond the threepoint line. Top returnee Kevon Parchment finished second in scoring last year with 16.9 points per game. Last year s team finished and advanced to the Canada West Final Four by defeating the University of Saskatchewan in a three-game series in the CW quarterfinal playoff series. UFV hosted NCAA Division I programs Cal State Northridge and Eastern Washington for exhibitions last season, falling in both contests. Scouting the Capilano University Blues Capilano placed fifth in the PacWest Conference last season with an 8-13 record in league action. Dwayne Selby returns for his second season as head coach after leading the league s youngest team in his first year at the helm. 3 Tipping Off Rice University men s basketball prepares for the campaign with a summer tour to Canada, which includes three exhibition games during the six-day trip. The Owls return eight players from last year s squad and add seven freshmen to the mix. The trip is the furthest north the Owls have ventured since the squad claimed the BP Top of the World Classic title in Alaska. C-USA Accolades Max Guercy was honored as a member of the Conference USA All-Freshman team for his outstanding rookie campaign and is the Owls top returning scorer for The point guard started all 31 games and scored 9.5 points per game to accompany 2.5 assists and an 80.5 free throw percentage. He added to his trophy case with a fifth Conference USA Freshman of the Week award on March 4. He averaged 13.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 3.0 steals in two games to earn the award for the fourth time in a six-week span. The guard notched 19 points, five steals and three rebounds against Tulane to earn the distinction for a fourth time in 16 weeks. Guercy s first award came on Jan. 7 after he scored 19 points and dished out five assists at Harvard two days earlier. He won the honor three weeks later on Jan. 28 after averaging 6.0 assists on the week at UCF and Tulane. In those two road games, he averaged 10.5 points per game and dished out 6.0 assists with just two total turnovers for the Owls. Guercy earned his third weekly award after scoring 21 points in Rice s win over Houston. ball security Rice ranked 26th in the nation and first in Conference USA in turnovers per game (11.2). Rice holds steady in turnover margin at +2.2, second in the league and 52nd nationally. Five Rice players posted assist-to-turnover ratios higher than 1.0, led by Seth Gearhart s and Max Guercy s marks. As a team, the Owls owned a 1.01 assist-toturnover ratio. Rice University Men s Basketball Beyond the Arc Rice converted an average of 7.39 three-pointers per game to rank second in Conference USA and 58th nationally. Three Owls ranked in the league s top 20 in threes made per game, including Austin Ramljak s 2.32, good for third. Ramljak came within two treys of the program record when he sank 6-of-12 attempts against Georgia Tech on Nov. 22 and ranked sixth on Rice s single season list with 72 treys for the season. Ramljak s 37.3 three-point percentage led the team, narrowly edging Julian DeBose (36.9) and Max Guercy (36.8). Applying Pressure In the season s final 17 games, Rice allowed its opponents to score on the first possession of the game just two times (at UTEP, at SMU). In the other 15 games, the opposition s first possession has ended with a Rice steal five times and a Rice rebound 10 times. On the season, opponents scored on their first possession 11 times, compared to eight turnovers and 12 Rice rebounds. Head of the class Max Guercy led or ranked near the top of the freshman class in numerous Conference USA statistical categories. The guard is third among rookies in scoring (9.5 ppg) and three-point shooting (36.8 percent), first in free throw accuracy (80.5), and second in steals (1.45 spg) and assists by a freshman with 2.5. Fellow newcomer Ross Wilson ranks third among league freshmen in field goal percentage (51.9). Six make C-USA Honor Roll Among Rice s 215 members on the Conference USA Commissioner s Honor Roll, six men s basketball players made the list by posting a cumulative grade point average over 3.0. Bahrom Firozgary, Seth Gearhart, Max Guercy, Dan Peera, Austin Ramljak and Ross Wilson were each honored by the league for their success in the classroom. He also finished 60th nationally in scoring and was one of just four C-USA players to score 30 or more points twice on the season. 6 Austin Ramljak finished the season ranked sixth in program history with 72 three-pointers on the season. The junior s 193 trey attempts rank fourth on the single-season list. His 2.32 threes per game ranked third in the league and 103rd nationally. 15 Rice overcame a 15-point deficit (29-14) to topple Houston on Jan. 30. It ties for the seventh-largest deficit overcome by Rice in a win in program history. The Owls also erased an 18-point margin to the Cougars in the C-USA Tournament opener Rice led Conference USA and ranked 24th nationally with a 16.3 turnover rate (16.3 percent of Rice s offensive possessions ended in a turnover). The Owls 11.2 turnovers per game also led the league. 128 Jackson played in 128 career games for Rice, placing him in second on the program s all-time list. He trails former teammate Connor Frizzelle by just one game. 608 Head coach Ben Braun wrapped up the campaign with 608 career wins, ranking him 12th among active NCAA Division I coaches. 1,684 Jackson scored 1,684 points in his illustrious career to finish as number six on Rice s all-time list. He began the season in 25th place but tallied 549 points in his senior campaign to make the move.

There were 34 total honorees in the conference. Milestone Man Class of 2013 graduate Tamir Jackson became the ninth player in program history to score 1,500 career points when he did so in the second half against SMU on Feb. 9, He then became just the sixth Owl to notch 1,600 points on March 6 at Houston. Jackson is one of only two players in Rice history to rank in the program s career top 10 in each of the following categories: points, assists and steals. Charity stripe success Rice converted a solid 72.6 percent of its free throw attempts on the season ( ), ranking the team third in the league and 67th nationally. The Owls got to the stripe 15.9 times per game, led by Tamir Jackson s 5.1 free throw attempts. Rice in the Postseason Rice has an overall record in postseason conference tournaments. The record includes an 8-18 mark as a member of the Southwest Conference ( ), a 4-6 record during a stint in the WAC ( ) and a 4-8 record in the Conference USA Tournament (2006-pres.). In , the Owls advanced to the CollegeInsider.com Tournament quarterfinal round with a pair of wins against Louisiana-Lafayette and Drake. Previously, Rice had last played in a national postseason tournament in 2005 when the Owls competed in the National Invitation Tournament. The Owls dropped a decision to Missouri State in the opening round. Rice last played in the NCAA Tournament in Rice University Men s Basketball New faces on the bench In addition to the large incoming class of freshmen, the Owls feature a shift in the coaching staff as well. Assistant coach Brian Eskildsen joined Ben Braun s staff over the summer following three years working with Stanford s men s basketball program. The newcomer takes over for Gus Argenal, who accepted a head coaching position with Cal State East Bay in May. Adam Gierlach also moves into a new role as assistant coach for Rice after spending the season as Video Coordinator and Director of Player Development. The Rice alumnus enters his sixth season with the program in Houston Spoils mammoth comeback in tournament Rice rallied back from an 18-point first-half deficit to take a late lead against Houston before the Cougars regained their footing to hold on for a win in the Conference USA Championship opening round. Tamir Jackson led the effort with his secondstraight 30-point performance. He sank 12-of-28 attempts from the floor and hauled in nine of the Owls 34 rebounds. Julian DeBose (13) and Austin Ramljak (11) also scored in double figures while Keith Washington led Rice with four assists. in with the new Like much of the NCAA Division I landscape, Conference USA will feature a new look in , as the league expands from 12 to 16 members for men s basketball. Newcomers Charlotte, Florida Atlantic, FIU, Louisiana Tech, North Texas, Old Dominion and UTSA give the conference a fresh look and geographically diverse footprint beginning this fall. The teams take the place of Houston, Memphis, SMU and UCF, who departed over the summer for the American Athletic Conference. Western Kentucky is slated to join C-USA in as East Carolina, Tulane and Tulsa move to the AAC after the upcoming season, bringing the membership to 14 programs. 5 Scholar-Athletes Rice is the only team in the league to have at least one scholar-athlete named to the Conference USA All-Academic Basketball Team each of the past seven seasons after Seth Gearhart and Austin Ramljak earned the honor on March 8. Rice has had two honorees each of the past four seasons. Gearhart is an Economics major and holds a 3.21 grade point average, while Ramljak holds a 3.67 GPA in Psychology. Connor Frizzelle and Lucas Kuipers were both named to the league s 2012 all-academic team. At the conclusion of each of the past six seasons, a Rice basketball student-athlete has been the recipient of the Conference USA Scholar Athlete of the Year award as Ramljak earned the honor in Ramljak and Bahrom Firozgary were named to the 2013 National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Honors Court. In order to be named to the Honors Court, student-athletes had to meet a set of standards including being either a junior or senior, have a cumulative 3.20 or higher grade point average and have matriculated at least one year at their NCAA or NAIA institution. Nate Schwarze joined Frizzelle and Kuipers on the 2012 National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Honors Court. The Owls also won the inaugural NABC Team Academic Excellence Award in 2013, given to the 21 NCAA Division I programs with a cumulative team GPA of 3.0 or higher for the season. Rice capped off the academic award season with the C-USA Sport Academic Award for posting the highest team GPA in the league. As a full program, Rice also claimed the league s Institutional Excellence Award for posting the highest GPA in the conference across all varsity sports. Rice = Happy Students The nation s happiest students with the best quality of life are at Rice University, according to the 2012 edition of the Princeton Review s The Best 376 Colleges. And that s according to the students. For the third year in a row, students surveyed for the annual college guide rank Rice No. 1 for best quality of life. The new edition also ranked Rice No. 1 for happiest students. Rice s top spot on the Best Quality of Life list was based on responses from students to questions about food, dorm comfort, campus beauty, ease of getting around campus, location, campus safety, interaction among different types of students on campus, satisfaction with the school administration and friendliness and happiness of the students. Answering the question What s your college? starts as soon as a new Rice student walks through the sally port of iconic Lovett Hall the first night of O-Week (new student orientation). One of the unique aspects of Rice University is the residential college system. Students often cite the college system as one of the best, most rewarding things about Rice. All students are randomly assigned to one of 11 self-governing residential colleges. More than just a residence hall, Rice s colleges are students primary place for dining, studying and socializing. The campaign was highlighted by immense success in the classroom, as the squad won a pair of team academic awards while individuals claimed five different honors and six players were named to the Conference USA Commissioner s Honor Roll. The season saw the staff s hard work payoff as the program returned to postseason play for the first time since The Owls record included a non-conference win at Texas A&M and the Owls went 8-8 in league play. The staff s performance on the recruiting trail as well as on the practice court became evident the previous year. With a record, Rice posted the most victories since the season and the team s 5-11 conference mark doubled the program s total conference wins from the past three combined seasons.
