Sport Edition Two Highlights from this term E. Taylor wins Gold, Silver and Bronze in the ISA National swimming Finals U14 Boys Win the ISA South Hockey Championships U12 girls and boys win the Berkshire In2Hockey County Championships U14 ISA Football in Nottingham Plate Winner.

U12 girls win the Berkshire In2Hockey County Championships On Monday 12 march 2018, after the tournament being postponed the week before due to snow, our U12 girls could finally go to the County tournament in the hope to regain the title of County champions. The girls had 5 group games initially, winning 5 out of 5 games; St Mary s B 4-0, Newlands 4-0, Downe House 3-0, Kennet 3-0 and St Mary s A 2-0. This put them into the cup competition of the next round where they were to play the top two teams from the opposite group. They went onto play The Marist winning 4-0 and then Holyport winning 3-0. Still at this point in the tournament the girls had not conceded a goal or a defending short corner. The girls then met The Abbey in the Semi-finals and beat them 3-0 and progressed into the final where they met Newlands for the second time. They were a little slow to start in the final but, when the first goal went in the nerves started to subside and they came away with a 3-0 victory. This ensured that they were crowned County Champions and regained the trophy that Holme Grange has won for the last three years running. A huge congratulations to all of the team for their outstanding efforts! The girls then went onto represent Berkshire in the South Regional Hockey Finals in Woking where they came 6th in the whole of the southern region! H.Tanner, A. Harris, M.Gordeno, M. Ewart, M. Scott, T. Dowle, L. Dowle, E. Meakins and M. Kumpa-Finch

Senior Fixtures U14 ISA Football in Nottingham Our U14 boys footballers had a 6.30am meet and made the long 3 hour journey to Nottingham with Mr Dewar to the ISA National 6 a side competition. The squad performed brilliantly all day, losing just one game in the process. We unfortunately missed out on winning the group stage by just one goal so we entered the plate competition, competing against the other 2nd placed sides. The boys controlled the plate semi-final, winning 20 against a local Nottingham school. This meant we would go on to a play a strong school from Somerset in the final. After going 1-0 down in the early stages, the team showed great resilience to get it back to 1-1 after Max Pietsch was awarded a penalty after being brought down by the goalkeeper. It was then down to Jack Arden to score a fantastic left footed goal with the last kick of the game to win the plate competition for Holme Grange. Great result for the team! Berkshire Cross Country 5 pupils went to the Berkshire Cross Country at Newbury Showground. Despite the poor weather the pupils did extremely well. The U13 s are an extremely competitive race with around 100 boys racing. The Holme Grange Boys got off to a great start and showed tremendous grit and determination over the 3 kilometre course. Showing great stamina M Neave came in 2nd, H Daniel in 5th, T Harding in 45th and M Neave in 58th. The Boys team came 4th out of all of the schools in the whole of Berkshire. For the U15 Girls E Hayes ran well in tough conditions and placed 70th overall, another fantastic achievement.

U12 Boys Country In2Hockey Tournament On Friday the 9th March, eight Year 7 boys competed in the U12 In2Hockey county tournament at Leighton Park, Reading. It was a very wet day but they kept their hopes high for the tournament. They played a total of four other teams: Desborough, LVS, Leighton Park and Charters school. In the first match they played Desborough, who were a strong side. They began cautiously, though after a few minutes they had put together some good attacking plays. The forwards and backs linked well and in no time at all goals had been scored by Thomas Harding and Alex Narey. The whistle blew after the 15 minutes and they won the game 3-0. Next, they played LVS, who were also quite strong. The boys decided that it would be a good idea to rotate players every 5 minutes, to keep themselves fresh for the whole afternoon. In this match they began to feel more relaxed and moved the ball around with more confidence. Our practice after school and during our PE lessons had helped our individual skill as well as our interplay. At the final whistle they came out victorious with a 4-0 win, having played very well. Leighton Park, the hosts, were our next opponent. We started slowly but soon grew in confidence. At the halfway point it was still very close, though we managed to pull away in the latter part of the match scoring some well worked goals, ending up winning 5-0. In the last match, the pressure was on, not only to win but to try and keep the goals scored against us to zero. It was likely that we could go through to the next round if we could just hold our nerve. We scored and then they scored, it was 1-1 with 5 minutes remaining. The rotation of the subs bench seemed to be working well and despite the bad weather, we were fresh and still keen to run and pass the ball around. It took a huge team effort but we all dug deep. The team came together and put three further goals past the opposition keeper and the whistle blew for the final time, with the score being 4-1. Overall, the team had worked hard and played very well. They had not lost a match and had came 1st in the tournament, winning the shield and a medal and now have the opportunity to go to regionals. Our fingers are crossed for another good performance! M. Davies, M. Neave (Cap), T. Harding, A. Narey, O. Sleight, H. Daniel, J. Green and W. Pollinger

ISA Table Tennis Some of our Year 7, 8 and 9 students experienced a fantastic day at the ISA National Table Tennis competition at Sherfield School. We were one of the most successful schools at the tournament with Kai Gordeno winning the U15 plate singles competition, beating our very own Marco Walalangi in a tense final. Harrison Scott was the winner of the U15 cup singles competition, Thomas Harding won the U13 singles trophy as well as getting the bronze medal in the U13 doubles cup with Hector Daniel. What an amazing and successful day for the team! Crosfields 7 s Rugby Tournament The U12 boys 7 s rugby team played excellently to win all their games in the annual Crosfields 7 s Tournament. They beat teams such as LVS, Eagle House and Crosfields to take the title. Particular mentions must go to Monty Neave, Jamie Green and Thomas Harding put in fantastic performances all afternoon to lead the team to the title. Great work Boys! E.Taylor wins Gold, Silver and Bronze in the ISA National swimming Finals Last Sunday E.Taylor travelled up to the Olympic park to compete in the ISA National swimming finals. She qualified after winning gold at the London West regional round in the 200m Freestyle in November of last year. E. Taylor and her London West team had an extremely successful day winning Gold and silver medals in their Freestyle and medley relays. E. Taylor came in third to win bronze in her 100m Freestyle which was a fantastic achievement. As a result of some fantastic swimming from all ages groups, the London West team were crown National champions overall. Huge congratulations to her and the London West swimmers.

U14 Boys Win the ISA South Hockey Championships On Thursday 26th January the U14 boys travelled to Ballard School to play in the U14 Hockey Championships. This was the first year of entering this competition so we did not know what to expect. It was a round robin tournament and there were 7 teams in our group. Each game was 10 minutes one way. The boys first game was against the very well drilled St James school and despite a number of chances it took a while for us to score. With a cheeky goal just before the end the game finished 1-0 to HG. Next up were the host Ballard school and then Lucton. The boys won both these games; 2-0 and 4-0. The boys were on a roll and were playing some fantastic hockey but had their toughest two games still to come. Next up was Claire s Court and having seen them play earlier the boys knew that this was going to be a tough match. HG were the first to score, closely followed by an equaliser from Claires Court. The game remained 1-1 until the last 30 seconds when H. Scott dribbled into the D and slotted the ball into the back of the net making it 2-1 to HG. The boys final 2 games were against LVS and St Edwards School and they won both of these games 2-0 and 1-0. Having won all of their games and only conceding 1 goal throughout the whole tournament, HG topped the table with an impressive 6 out of 6 wins. The boys received gold medals and were crowned the U14 ISA south Hockey Champions. They all did extremely well and play some outstanding hockey. We are all very excited to see how this young team will progress over the next few years. Congratulations! Team: H. Scott, K. Gordeno, M. Walalangi, J. Qualtrough, M. Smith (GK), B. Beaumont- Rhodes, M. Neave, A. Narey and H. Daniel

Year 2 Fixtures On Tuesday 20th March our very excited year 2 pupils travelled to Windsor for their return fixture against St Georges. This time, the boys played rugby, whilst the girls played an adapted game of netball. Although extremely excited, the pupils conducted themselves very well and showed some fantastic individual skills and great teamwork. The fixtures were not scored on the day as we uses these matches as a practice for when the pupils move into year 3 and start taking part in fixtures on a weekly bases. Nonetheless, the way the pupils performed throughout their fixtures has been extremely promising and we are very excited to see their continued progression for next year. Well done year 2!
