National 4-H Week and Community Service * Junior Dairy Show Results State Fair Results/Youth Fair Results Dear 4-H Family, Our new 4-H year began on October 1 so most club leaders are busy contacting 4-H families to renew medical release forms, update enrollment forms and prepare youth for the new 4-H year. Another yearly process is 4-H RECORD KEEPING. Youth who have had a great 4-H experience have many stories to tell about their 4-H work. The 4-H record is due into our office by Dec. 10. We can assist your club in preparing your 4-H project records. District Activity Day is another event to plan for as a member of Randolph County 4-H. At District Activity Day, 4-H members gather in one location to give 4-H educational presentations. Each year a different county hosts District Activity Day. This year, 2011 RANDOLPH COUNTY 4-H WILL HOST DISTRICT ACTIVITY DAY. You may wonder what that means, well it means Randolph County 4-H members will be able to stay in the county to participate in the educational presentation contest. We are challenging all club members to plan to give an educational presentation at District Activity Day this year, especially because it will be here at home! Now is the time, at the beginning of the year, to begin planning for what your educational presentation might be. We will also need many parent, leaders and volunteers to help us manage the many duties of hosting District Activity Day. Mark June 21 on your calendar and plan to participate. I am glad you are a member of 4-H and both Jody and I look forward to working closely with you in Sincerely, Barbara Dunn Swanson Extension Agent 4-H Youth Development North Carolina State University and North Carolina A&T State University commit themselves to positive action to secure equal opportunity regardless of race, color, creed, national origin, religion, sex, age or disability. 3 National 4-H Week and Community Service October 3-9, 2010 was National 4-H Week. What a great celebration we had this year. 4-H youth and volunteers across Randolph County were invited to participate in the Hungry to Help Food Drive. Randolph County has a tremendous need for food support. The Christians United Outreach Center of Asheboro is a major supplier for food assistance in the area. As of Tuesday, October 5, their shelves had been depleted down to nothing. For the first time in its existence, the CUOC had to close their doors. Our 4-H club members were challenged to go out into the community and ask for food donations. Our hope was to collect maybe 500 food items (cans). As of Thursday, October 14, we had collected 1150 food items. CUOC Director, Jerry Hill attended our 4-H celebration on Thursday, October 7 at the Extension Office to accept our donation and thank the 4-H members and leaders that worked so hard to collect food and spread the word about this important need. Mr. Hill shared words of inspiration with our 4-H youth about the importance of giving back to our community and how significant this donation would be to the youth and families that would receive it. After counting all the food items, everyone who attended enjoyed a refreshing ice cream sundae and time for fellowship. We had some great community contributors that helped make this donation possible: State Employee s Credit Union, Shepherd s Way Childcare Center, Pat s Afterschool Care, Word of Faith Ministries, Franklinville Elementary Afterschool, SWRMS Service Club, Deborah Robbins (Social Worker for Randolph County Schools), Randolph County Soil and Water, Country Kids 4-H Livestock Club, Super Sharp Shooting Stars 4-H Club, Randolph County 4-H Teen Leadership Club, S.H.A.R.E. Club and Happy Heifer Dairy 4-H Club. **** We have a very important 4-H Parent/Leader Meeting scheduled for Thursday, November 11 at the Extension Office at 5:30 pm. Please call the office to RSVP. Lots of great information. RSVP to Dawn at or dawn_cheek@ncsu.edu **** 3

6 ** International Walk to School This the second year Randolph County 4-H has volunteered with the International Walk to School Event. Communities are using the walk or bike to school initiative as the first step to change community culture and create environments that are more inviting for everyone, young and old. Some reasons to support walking and biking to school are: to enhance the health of kids by increasing physical activity, improve air quality for the environment and creating safer routes for walking and bicycling. This year three elementary schools in our community participated, Archdale Elementary, Donna Lee Loflin Elementary and Randleman Elementary. ** New Clubs On The Block Randleman Afterschool and New Horse Club! Welcome! ** Big Sweep Hats off to our 4-H youth and leaders that came out to pick up trash for the Big Sweep event on Saturday, September 25. This year's location was the Randolph/Asheboro YMCA. Stickler, Monica Stickler, Josh Allred, Laura Allred, Heather Allred, Theta Stickler and Gail Allred. ** Record Books It s time to start thinking about getting those record books together.
