Memorial Day has its roots in our American history at the conclusion of the Civil War when General John A Logan, commander of the Grand Army of the Republic issued a decree that May 30th should become a national day of commemoration for the more than 620,000 soldiers killed in the recently concluded war. At the larger level it helps me to remember that there is nothing in this life that is free. It pays to remember that in so many ways. If you re being offered something for free by a friend of a peer, you might want to examine it to see what kind of hidden strings might be attached. In our civic life, the same thing holds true. If something is being offered as free you can bet that someone else will be paying for the privilege of it being free to someone else. On this Memorial Day I would encourage you to remember that the freedoms we so cherish aren t free, but cost us all dearly and some ultimately. There are very few nations on this earth that have the opportunities that we many times take for granted. The ability to pursue an education and to better our standing in life, the ability to publicly disagree with the positions our government officials take, or even the freedom to travel without hindrance all are privileges enjoyed by very few. So let s take a moment to offer a simple thank you to those that stand in the gap on our behalf, which includes not just military personnel but law enforcement and emergency workers as well. My hat goes off and I hope yours does to, to those that pay the price of freedom that we enjoy. I hope you had a good holiday, and are ready to get busy as camp and fair season are now upon us. I look forward to seeing you University of Missouri, Lincoln University, U.S. Department of Agriculture & Local University Extension Councils Cooperating University Outreach and Extension does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, religion, age, disability or status as a Vietnam-era veteran in employment or programs. around the clover. 4 FilmFest 4-H FilmFest 4-H is a national film festival. It is for youth who are filmmakers, visual artists, aspiring actors, and for those who are just interested in meeting other creative people! FilmFest helps youth become producers, not just consumers, of digital media. This Film Festival will be held on July 29-August 1 in Columbia, Missouri. Passes for event will be available to purchase after April 16, For more information regarding the Film Festival or to purchase passes go to You do not have to be enrolled in project area to attend! State Public Speaking September 29 The state web site has been updated with rules for 2018 at: Repeat Competitors: For Intermediates and Seniors, first place finishers from a previous year may not compete in that same category a second time, until they advance to the next age division. Until that time they will have to compete in another category. This restriction does not apply to Juniors. Interpretations: there are painful moments of history that are important to remember that are great material for dramatic Interpretation at this contest, however, with an audience that includes small children, depictions of things like beatings, torture, child deaths, genocide are not appropriate for State 4-h Public Speaking Contest. Finally, because we are using 4HOnline for registration, there are no longer limits on how many youth from any one county can compete! Public Speaking Academy June 20-21, 2018 at CMU Campus, Fayette Youth who participate at this exciting invitational event are guided through the basics and finer points of writing and delivering a speech, in a noncompetitive setting. The Public Speaking Academy is open to all youth ages years of age who are interested in learning more about public speaking. One does not have to be a 4-H member to attend, but academy spaces are limited to a maximum of 20 and will be filled on a "first come" basis. The academy takes place at the Central Methodist University campus, with caring adult chaperones there to help every step of the way. 5 University of Missouri Extension McDonald County 306 Harmon St. Pineville, MO Materials Crafts knife Clover Kids Corner Colorful Kite Two flat sticks: 1/2x3/8x42 inches and 1/2x3/8x38 inches String or twine: at least 60 feet Glue Vellum or paper: 45 x 45 inches Pencil Paint, glitter glue sticks, crayons, and colorful markers Crepe paper and ribbons in various sizes Fast-drying glue Instructions Ask an adult to use a crafts knife to carve a lengthwise notch 1/4 inch deep into both ends of each stick. Notches should be deep enough to tightly hold the string, as shown. Place the middle of the short stick over the long stick about 9 inches from one end of the long stick. Where the sticks intersect, tie them together with string. Knot; cut excess string. Add glue for extra holding power. Starting at the top, thread string through each notch all the way around; repeat, keeping string taut. Finish at the top and tie a knot but don't cut the string. This is the kite's frame. To make the bridle (where you'll attach the flying string), draw the knotted string back from the top and tie it off where the sticks intersect. Cut the string, leaving a 3-inch tail. Place the frame flat onto the vellum or paper, and lightly draw an outline of the kite frame, adding 3/4 inch all the way around. The extra eventually will be folded over the string and glued. With scissors, cut out the sail, then set the frame aside until the sail is decorated. Use paint, glitter, crayons, and markers to decorate the sail. When the decorating is finished, allow 10 minutes to dry. Place the frame flat against the sail. Pour fast-drying glue onto the edges of the sail, and fold edges over the string. Allow to dry for five minutes. Tie the remainder of your string to the bridle tail to create a flying string. Use crepe paper and/or ribbon to make a kite tail.
