Main, Suite 1 Gallatin, MO simpsonre@missouri.edu equal opportunity/ada institution Through Clover Kids clubs, children learn how to get along, share and work in groups, explore their interests and build self-confidence. Each Clover Kids Corner provides an activity, information or other materials that Clover Kids leaders can use in planning and implementing experiences that introduce 5- to 7-year-olds to the 4-H concept of learning by doing. Dandelion Fun Dandelion Search What you need Magnifying glasses Whole pulled dandelions (with the roots) What you do Access prior knowledge by asking the children what they know about the flower. Where do they grow? How do they get there? What do we use dandelions for? Next, let them explore the dandelions by taking them apart ask questions about what they are doing and encourage them to use all their senses what does it smell like? What does it feel like? What does it sound like when you rub them together? If possible, include a dandelion that is seeding and let them blow them and plant the seeds. Talk about how the seeds disperse. Dandelion Painting What you need Dandelions Paint Paper What you do Paint a picture using the dandelion as the paint brush. You can talk about how the different parts of the dandelions make different patterns, textures, etc in the art work. Source: May 2007 Newsletter, Clover/materials.htm Calling all Clover Kids! 7 LEADER LOOKOUT July club leader tips During the month of July we celebrate our nation s freedom and express thanks to those people who have dedicated their life to protecting our freedoms. While we celebrate these many gifts, celebrate your success as well. You have helped many 4-H members reach for the stars to accomplish their goals and learn many life skills that will enhance their lives forever. As you prepare to celebrate this year s many successes, consider the following suggestions and ideas: 1. State Fair entry forms due in Sedalia by July 2. Make plans for transporting the county s non-livestock exhibits to Sedalia [if applicable]. 2. If you have not already done so, pass out award forms and remind members of county due dates for state and local awards. 3. Nominate a leader for Frank Graham Award from your club, submit the club s nomination to the local MU Extension center. 4. Start recruiting project and assistant club leaders for the coming year. Share descriptions of expectations and time commitments with potential leaders. 5. Visit with project leaders about experiences leading projects this year and ask for suggestions for next year. 6. Begin working with club treasurer on closing the books and completing required reports to submit to the local MU Extension center. Projects selected for Missouri State Fair If you have items selected for the 2010 Missouri State Fair, they must be in the Extension Office by Tuesday, August 2nd at 3PM. You may pick 2 of your state fair selected items to send. If you have food to send, it will not be returned after the fair. All items sent to the state fair will remain in the Extension office until after the Northwest Missouri State Fair in Bethany. State fair items will be entered in the fine arts building at the NWMO fair which will be held August 31-Sept. 5. Premium checks will be given to each club leader to be passed out at the next club meeting. If you wish to enter additional items in the NWMO state fair, the projects must be in the Extension Office by August 26 at 4:00 pm. They must be of blue ribbon quality, as determined by the achievement day judges.
