2 A Special Thank You On Sunday, April 19th a dedicated group of volunteers stepped forward to help clean up some University of Idaho property north of the Extension. This property is available to the 4-H program this summer to host a livestock camp and possibly other events, as well. The Extension would like to thank everyone who came out and helped with the clean up efforts. A special thank you to Lippert Heavy Equipment for the use of an excavator and dump truck for the day. Thank you to Adam Chapman for volunteering to run the equipment. Also, thank you to McCall s motors for the use of a tractor that The volunteers pose next to the dump truck during a recent clean up day. was used to mow the property. Without dedicated volunteers the 4-H program would not be able to grow and thrive in Bonner County. Thanks again, everyone! Camp Clean-Up The next clean-up day for the University of Idaho farm grounds is scheduled for Saturday, June 20th, 2015 beginning at 9AM. Please plan to come help get the ground ready for livestock camp! Leader Spotlight: Highlighting Leaders Who Shine! May/June Leader Highlight Tim Cary West Branch Pack THE HIGHTLIGHTS: Tim has been a leader with the Bonner County 4-H Program in the Priest River area for 26 years. Tim, along with wife Cheryl, has served as both Organizational and Project leaders for West Branch Pack 4-H Club. Tim has led woodworking, hiking/backpacking, forestry, sport fishing, market and breeding swine and market steer. Tim has been a part of the Market Animal Livestock Committee, served as chairman of the Fairboard, served on the Rodeo committee, and has volunteered many hours helping with steer and swine weigh-in s each year. Tim has led his children, grandchildren and numerous other friends and family members through their 4-H journey. Thank you, Tim. You commitment and dedication to the 4-H program is apparent in your hard work and the time you give to this program. Your service does not go unrecognized and you are greatly and truly appreciated. Keep up the great work! ***To nominate an outstanding leader for the next issue of 4-H News & Notes, contact the local Extension ***

3 Teen Conference Registration for the upcoming teen conference is now open! Teen Conference is an amazing opportunity to explore the university of Idaho campus, learn life skills that will stretch beyond your high school years and meet new people. This year, teen conference will be held June 10th-13th on campus in Moscow. Early bird registrations are due no later than May 18th. Registration closes May 22nd. Registration for this event will be done through your 4-H online account. For more information on this great event, please contact the Extension for details or visit the teen conference website at Idaho State Forestry Contest The Idaho State Forestry Contest will be held May 14th, 2015 at the Delay farm in Careywood, Idaho. Contestants must be in 6-12 grades with a special rookie division for 6th graders. 7-12th graders may compete in teams or as individuals. Pre-registration is required this year. A list of materials and registration forms are available at This is a great event and many 4-H members often place top in both the team category and in the individual category. The trophies and traveling saw are on display in the indoor exhibit hall during the fair. National 4-H Congress National 4-H Congress will be held November 2th-December 1st in Atlanta, Georgia. This national event is an excellent opportunity for those members who have excelled in 4-H at the local, district and state level. Congress includes workshops, cultural events, community service projects, fashion review, and sightseeing. Idaho 4-H members, age are eligible to apply. Delegates will be responsible for a portion of their travel costs. Applications for Congress are due by July 1st. Record Book Changes There have been some changes to record books this year. Members in a market animal project will now turn in their record books at the beginning of fair. In the past, this has always been a record book check, but because of the change to the market livestock auction, the books are now due at the beginning of fair. This will help the Elk s club with the time restrictions on judging books. Market members will turn in their completed book before weigh-in. The only item that is allowed to be missing is the income/ expense report. This will be due Saturday afternoon directly following the livestock auction. These forms must be turned into the Extension to have your record book considered complete. If they are not complete, your project will be considered incomplete for the year.

5 LIVESTOCK LEADER & MEMBER NEWS Swine Weigh-In Schedule Don t forget that swine will be weighed by club again this year. Each club will be assigned a time to show up and weigh their pigs. Please check with your leader or call the Extension if you don t know what time slot was assigned to your club. Upcoming Clean-Up Day To get livestock camp up and running, the MALC and the Extension will need to conduct one more clean up day to ensure the grounds are ready for use. The next clean up day has been scheduled for Saturday, June 20th. Please plan to attend. This camp can t get up and running without the help of all the volunteers to get these grounds ready to go. Swine Camp 2015 Market Animal Calendar of Events State Livestock Judging Contest This year the State Livestock Judging contest will be held on September 12th, If anyone has any interested in coaching or putting together a team, please contact Erika at the Extension. It would be wonderful to see Bonner County represented at this contest! Livestock camp in Bonner County may become a reality sooner rather than later. This year, Extension and the MALC are hopeful to bring a quality camp to the 4-H swine members. The camp will consist of two overnights and two full days of fun. Some of the highlights will include workshops on market selection, fitting and showing and nutrition. Some of the other fun activities may include barnyard Olympics, movie night under the stars, and a practice skill-a-thon. Camp will begin on a Friday evening and conclude Sunday afternoon. Meals and camp shirts will be included in the cost of the camp. Dry camping will be available and will be included in the price of the camp. Hopefully the cost of camp will be relatively low this year as we experiment with layout, clinicians, food and all the other aspects of the camp. Camp will be limited in numbers and will be limited to only swine for the first year. The event will be held on the University of Idaho Farm Grounds, just north of the fairgrounds. In years to come, if this camp remains viable, it will hopefully expand to include other species of livestock, as well. Please stay tuned and watch your for additional information, sign up times, costs and all of the other details. Graduation is approaching, the sun in shining, the flowers are blooming and 4-H is in full swing. There is only one more edition of the newsletter before fair! Hard to believe how fast it approaches. Please remember to keep checking your newsletters for important updates and information. Some of the things you will find in each edition include the upcoming calendar of events, details on livestock requirements, updates for all of the leader association groups, updates on fair requirements and other important details, such as the schedule for the 4-H food booth. If you somehow misplace your copy, you can always call the Extension and have one ed to your inbox. Electronic copies are easy to file away for later retrieval. Also, if you have ideas or suggestions for upcoming editions, the Extension staff is available by phone or to take your suggestions. 4-H has a lot going on this time of year, and staying informed is half the battle. Shooting Sports Leader Meeting Small Animal/Dog Meeting and Updates All small animal and dog leaders are invited to attend the upcoming planning meeting for this year. This year the themes will include Birds In Flight and Handcrafted From the Heart. The day camps are always held on consecutive Thursday s in July. This year the dates for day camps are July 9th and July 16th. The cost to attend is $15 per session and registrations are limited to 20 kids. What is that insect pest in your garden? Why are your tomato plants not putting on fruit? How much fertilizer should you add to my garden? The Idaho Master Gardeners are here to help. Idaho Master Gardener volunteers are trained gardeners that are here to help homeowners with their garden related questions. The volunteers will be staffing the Plant Clinic on Wednesdays from 10:00am to 1:00 pm. Come by the extension office during that time or whenever it is convenient and leave your question. Questions may also be phoned in, but it is often helpful to have sample or picture of the problem. A Master Gardener will research the problem and contact you with possible solutions. The volunteers use research-based, non-biased information to answer your home garden questions. Make this garden season your best yet with helpful advice from the Idaho Master Gardener volunteers. 7
