1 Tennessee 4-H Ideas Volume 16, Issue 40 October 14, st Generation 4-H Members Inside this issue: OMC Results 2 BEST Credit 3 Nat. 4-H Week 4 I just returned from the National Association of Extension 4-H Agents meeting in New Orleans. It is always exciting to see over H professionals from across the country coming together to share the wonderful things happening in 4-H. I also came away from this annual meeting with a feeling of pride in what Tennessee 4-H is contributing to the 4- H program on a national level through committee representation, presenting our outstanding programs, and networking with other 4-H professionals. During the conference, state 4-H leaders gather together for 2 days of planning and setting direction for the 4-H program. This year we focused on reaching new audiences. Many states are using the term 1 st Generation 4-H members to represent their efforts to reach families that have never been participants. Many of our traditional 4-H members come from families with multiple generations of participation. We need, however, to begin to identify those families who don t have that tradition and invite them into the 4-H family. These may be migrant youth, homeless youth, racial or ethnic underserved audiences, inner city youth, youth with disabilities, or other young people to whom 4-H is not a common experience. I hope that each of us will closely look at the demographics of our counties and state and identified those 1 st Generation youth and take proactive steps to communicate with them and share the endless opportunities available to them through 4-H. 2 Page 2 Tennessee 4-H Ideas Results of 2016 Outdoor Meat Cookery Contest Dr. Dwight Loveday, Associate Professor On Saturday, October 1, Tennessee 4-H ers from all across the state gathered in Knoxville to compete in the annual State 4-H Fall Judging Day event. Eight teams representing seven counties participated in Outdoor Meat Cookery. High Individuals: Beef - Emily Welte, Putnam County Lamb - Hannah Steger, Putnam County Pork - Preston Waggoner, Loudon County Outdoor Meat Cookery: Top Team Honors went to Morgan County Team A The top two individuals in the poultry division received trips to the National 4-H Poultry and Egg Conference in Louisville, Kentucky. Kyla Rea from Weakley County was named the high individual in the poultry division. She will compete in the chicken barbeque contest in Louisville. Second high individual honors went to Seth Johnson of Morgan County, Team A. Seth will compete in the turkey barbeque contest in Louisville. Team: Top team honors went to Morgan County, Team A. Members of the winning team included Ethan Johnson, Dakota Nelson, Seth Johnson and Kaylee Redmon. The team was coached by Julie Crowe.

3 Volume 16, Issue 40 Page 3 Credit for B.E.S.T. Dr. Lori Gallimore, Extension Specialist Why did I not get credit for completing BEST? As we come to the end of the year, we are all fast and furiously working on our IAAs for 2017 and pulling together information for our annual performance reviews. For those of you who have completed Legs 1 and 3 of the B.E.S.T. (Building Exceptionally Skilled Teachers) program, you may have noticed that this information is not displaying in your T/R or professional development reports. This was brought to my attention in early September. I met with John Toman and learned that ExtOL (which is the home base for B.E.S.T.) does not communicate with IRIS and IRIS does not communicate with SU- PER. Hmmmm... this is a conundrum. Each month, Dr. Toman has to manually move data from ExtOL into SUPER. This transfer of information has not been happening for B.E.S.T. until October 1 when Dr. Toman attempted to move this data so that all of you who have completed Legs 1 and 3 in 2016 would have this information in your PD reports. This monthly transaction is, of course, a temporary bandaid until a new learning management system is put into place in early I met with Dr. Toman earlier this week to learn that this attempt was not successful. The next step was then to add the B.E.S.T. courses to my T/R dashboard in SUPER. He has added one for each of the years the course was offered. He also uploaded all of you who registered and marked those that had completed the training as attended. NOTE: The 2016 courses are active so people can still register and then take the course. So now, once you complete one of the legs of B.E.S.T., it will show up in your T/R dashboard and you will receive HR credit. Until the new LMS is set, I will also set the 2017 courses in SUPER to ensure you get credit. The information about the 2017 B.E.S.T. training is coming out next week. Technology is a wonderful thing... as long as it works. Just note, that we are aware of these issues and work is being done to repair them. Your patience is most appreciated! 4 Page 4 Tennessee 4-H Ideas National 4-H Week Administrative Honorees Dr. Lori Gallimore, Extension Specialist Last week, Tennessee 4-H celebrated National 4-H Week. Each year, the state 4-H office selects an Honoree of the Day which recognizes someone on the UTIA campus who has gone above and beyond the scope of their job in their support and wok with the 4-H program. Those honorees were announced in last week s edition of IDEAS.
