PO Box 2273, Bayswater Village LPO, Bayswater, Knox Roadrunners April 2012 Welcome to What s said on the run #41. We report on our 25 th anniversary, various events and assorted club news. Our celebration was another important day for our club. Emma Willis kindly donated our cake. Run for the Kids It was another cracker day for this fabulous community event. When 33,000 joggers get together to run, and the money goes to the RCH, then it is a good result. The course is a cracker too if you like tunnels, bridges and running through the middle of the CBD. finishing in 71 st position. Nice to have family members Paul, Tim, Michael & James running with us. Name Net time Bryan Eddie Wells James Paul Souter Rob K Tim Bower Nicole A Michael Stanisic Mike Milan Kathy Richo (Grant) Geraldine Steve Moneghetti Greg Gerry Gavin Dave Rolfe Linda Miranda Lesley Vasanta DT James Souter (5.2k) It was nice to see Rob competing in the KR singlet for the first time. Excellent run by Geraldine the training is paying off, and a nice scalp in beating Mona. Richo looked solid in his final race hit-out before Paris. Bret was a good boy to organise and support us even though he did not run. A great run by Tigger An interesting stat is that there were 9,300 ladies and 8,900 men completing the 14.4k run. Page 1

New members Welcome to Rob Kinstler & Russell Moore. groups including Tally Ho, Nunawading, and KR. Happy Birthday Bob. Bob & Don at our KR 1,000 th run Little th KR Anniversary Our Little Bobby Sayers turned 70 in February. He had a party to celebrate and a few KR s were lucky enough to be there. Bayswater Park was the venue for our BBQ Pete, Bob, Heather, Lesley, Mike & Bret Bobby has not been in the best of health for a couple of years but he was in vintage form this night. His cheeky style and eloquent speech showed he is pretty sharp still, even though he is no longer able to run. A bumper crowd turned up to celebrate our 25 th anniversary. There were 52 runners and approximately 75 overall in attendance. It was wonderful to have such a good attendance of new and not so new members plus plenty of members from the past. Attendees were a mix of family and runners. Bob s brother Don and daughter Simone have also run with KR. He ran with a variety of Anthony, Bruce & Ute Page 2

Bret welcomed all our surviving Presidents Phil, Bret, Peter, Greg & Mike Vic & Vincey happy with the stock-market Another from the vault With the recent 25 th anniversary report including some old stories, our long time member Dave Rolfe has advised us of this story: Gav is our burger-meister Miranda & Kate One Saturday after the run, a few of us were getting changed in the hall down the back of the club rooms. Doug Petrov had reached the stage of "naked" when he noticed another guy had a new pair of runners. So Doug asked if he could have a look at them & then if he could try them on. Doug then decides to run a couple of laps of the hall, still naked except for the shoes. The sight of long tall lankey Doug loping around that hall is permanently etched into my brain. Geraldine & Linda Doug with gear on Page 3

Boston The Boston Athletic Association has been conducting their marathon since 1897 with the current course in use since Our own Rob de Castella won in 1986 in a course & world record of 2:07:51. Winners include Bill Rogers, Alberto Salazar, Rosa Mota, Catherine Ndereba, & John A. Kelley. Mr Kelley ran Boston in 1928, won it twice, and entered 61 times including 1992 at 84 years. He died in 2004 at 97 years. He has a statue at the foot of Heartbreak Hill. Training always has our dedicated pair with their training Bubby We arrived in Boston ready with gloves and beanies only to hear warnings from organisers that we should not run unless we could cope with the expected 32c, about 2,800 of the 22,000 runners sought treatment with 215 treated at hospitals. The good news is that 500,000 locals here came to the rescue making available copious amounts of fluids, ice, sponges, garden hoses, spray bottles, and heaps of encouragement. Lis gratefully accepted some fruit and a beer which actually helped! We were overwhelmed by the community spirit as each of the fire brigade, police, army and thousands of volunteers all pitched in to help out the runners. The cheering and support was so unbelievably loud that ipods were out of the question. We wore KR singlets & Aussie flag caps and received cheers from a few Aussie ex-pats but were generally mistaken for Poms, Kiwis and Captain America! PBs did not enter the equation: Laurie was happy to take his 3:44:22 and Lis (without Bubby's assistance) managed to keep under her permitted heart rate maximum but still finish in 3:58:15. If you get the opportunity to run Boston we would unequivocally say "Go for it!" It was undoubtedly one of the most exciting & memorable experiences of our lives. We would not have been able to run Boston without KRR's wonderful support & encouragement so our thanks go out to all. It is always conducted on Patriots Day which is the 3 rd Monday of April. This is the marathon with the most history. But why mention this? Our own Lis & Laurie Dalton thought it was worth attempting. With so much history, you need to qualify (google it, it is not easy) and Lis & Laurie both did it. This is their story: Laurie & Lis, at Boston (without Bubby) Page 4

Puffing Billy 2012 Cold and wet. Cloud cover, misty hills, a train whistle, clouds of smoke and Mike Brady sings Advance Australia Fair. Yep, it s Puffing Billy! It was another big day for KR. Heavy rain before the run set up a soft course. Some fantastic results were achieved led by Bryan and John Sig beating their age. Nicole A led the ladies home in 61m and Bryan ran an excellent 48m to be 34 th of 3,040. A few beat the train home this year. Wendy Thank-you to Big Dave for taking care of us on the bus as usual. Also thanks to our Emerald based crew for the cheers as we struggled up the hill past the cafe. Greg, Phil, Lesley, Odette, Greenie, Margaret and Ed were there. James Bryan Richard James Anthony John Sig Puffing Billy Tim Bower Pete Seymour Milan Nicole A Mark Mike Rob K Nicole D Helen S Bret David G Gavin Jay Linda Anja Dave Rolfe Gerry Geraldine John R Warren Peter White Miranda Bronwyn J Puffing Billy Vasanta Jennifer G Wendy Heather There were many good results with Richard doing a PB, Linda and Geraldine showing great improvement, Gavin a nice surprise 66, and good to see Whitey get that dicky knee to Emerald Lake in a good time. Warren, Jay, Bronwyn & Pete Seymour ran with the club Page 5

for their first event. Dave Rolfe ran his 25 th consecutive Puffing Billy in a fast 69. Paris 2012 The proud KR history continues at this fantastic and historic marathon. Grant has a story: Anthony just in front of the Emerald Richo & mate Jon on the cobblestones Pete Arriving in Paris a week before the Marathon added to the excitement of the event. I was not sure though that a week of sightseeing, croissants, pastries, red wine and lots of walking was the perfect way to taper. Jon and I managed a couple of short runs around Paris to keep the legs ticking over and as I do in Melbourne I greeted other runners with a Bonjour while running and only received some strange looks. Had they not heard of Richo? Linda Marg, Odette, Lesley, Greg & Phil cheering us through Emerald All Puffing Billy photos thanks to Ed Stanley On the Thursday before the Marathon we went and collected our race numbers at the running expo. We were quite excited as I had heard this was huge and we were not disappointed. Jon and I were like two little boys in a lolly factory. Jon purchased everything he could that had Paris Marathon on it. We had to drag him away in the end kicking and screaming. Sunday finally arrived and the weather was completely opposite to what Laurie and Lis had to deal with in Boston. It was cold, overcast and no rain forecast. Perfect! I was feeling unusually quite relaxed even though my recent injuries Page 6

and lack of long runs were hovering in the back of my mind. Oxfam 2012 We walked up to Arc de Triomphe and after a million photos (as you do) we jumped in with 40,000 other Marathoners for the start. The gun went off and 22 minutes later we crossed the start line. We were away. In 2006 I did my first Marathon and would never have dreamed that six years later I would be running the Paris Marathon. I was excited! Plastic Richo This event is one not to be missed. It is the Tour de France of running and l was staggered at the amount of people out on the streets yelling and shouting words of encouragement, even if was in French. It was an amazing day and if you are planning a European holiday you must add this in to your itinerary. It is not to be missed. KR has had reps every year at Oxfam and this year was no different. Pete Bignell s team completed in a fast 13:30 and Michael Clarke and Team Muttley continued their consistent improvement over several years to complete in 9:51 another course record and the first sub-10. Wow. Saturday Run snaps Ever roll over at 5am on a Saturday when the alarm goes off and then stay in bed? Dave should have stayed in bed this day. Kathy could do better. I always love to see people finishing their first marathon, so it was extra special seeing my mate Jon do his first. He finished in 4hr 30 min. It was great effort as he had gone in with an injury. Thanks for all the support from KRR folk and a special thanks to Bret, Adam S, Nicole A and John Signorini for doing some extra k s with me before I went away. The VP KR athlete Dave Page 7

Richard The chicken shop is now Frank s cakes and it opens early for coffee if you are on drinks! Nicole And while we were having drinks at Franks Cake shop, Kathy and several KR s had this view while on the Rollercoaster run. Can you see Frank s Cakes? Some more Puffing Billy: Dave Geraldine Tigger with Greenie, Phil & Greg cheering Page 8
