PO Box 2273, Bayswater Village LPO, Bayswater, Knox Roadrunners January 2012 Welcome to What s said on the run #40. This is our Summer edition. We have our fabulous Christmas party plus some recent events such as the new City to Sea run, Marysville and assorted club news. City to Sea 13 November A great new run started in Melbourne in November. It runs from the Arts Centre to St Kilda via Albert Park Lake which makes it a fast course. KR had 24 entrants including many family members. We had Briony (daughter of Vincey), Paul & Claire (of Dave & Kathy), Marion (wife of Pete), Tim (of Lesley & Mike), and Sasa (nephew of Milan) who was holidaying from Madrid. Our Christmas party was again a great success. Nicole, Miranda, Michael & Wendy Stanisic boys Sasa & Milan Read on to learn something new about Mike It was great to have Ross back after his knee operation and Vic back after a long break due to a dodgy ticker. Nicole A started the day by running up the Eureka stairs then did a fast 68m wow! Paul Souter set himself to beat comedian Dave Hughes who had announced he would run 56m Paul passed him on Beaconsfield Pde a win. Page 1
Welcome to Yasmin running in the KR singlet for the first time another fast lady at KR. Some ran for fast times, some just enjoyed the views, and some ran with their (greasy) mates. Whatever, it was an enjoyable run in our wonderful city. Thanks to Hernan, Greg, Vic & Mike for driving, and to Lesley for carrying gear, taking photos and taking care of us all. Name Net time % of category Ross % Bryan % Paul Souter % Mike % Tim Bower % Kathy % Sasa Stanisic % Yasmin % Bruce Edwards % Vic % Nicole Allen % Geraldine % Hernan Milan Greg Gavin Alan Green % Dave Rolfe % Miranda Peter Vince % Claire Souter Dave Souter Briony Vince Marion Forrest Wattle Park We had a most enjoyable day at our recent Smokey joint run with the Kew based Smokey runners. The usual run was improved by not getting lost, plus there is a new tunnel under Warrigul Road which helps. Thanks again to Gavin for BBQ duties. Geraldine, Linda, Monnie & the Pres Gavin preparing the tucker C2S Medals on show at Catani Gardens New members: New members continue to arrive. Welcome to Warren Beacom, Yasmin Dunshore, Peter Seymour and Jay Fleming. Also welcome to Betsy Hoebert photo next time. Page 2
All courses were slippery and deep in mud on sections but our team ploughed on regardless. Big Al Willis Yasmin, Peter, Warren & Jay Marysville Marathon The words of our Pres: A strong field of runners from KRR arrived at a wet and muddy Marysville to take on the Ultra, Full Marathon, Half and 10km event. Alan Willis fronted up at 7:00AM on the start line for the Ultra alongside Sandy Doyle and Brett Budziarski, both to take on the Full. In the marathon, Sandy moved into the lead of the ladies marathon and held this all the way to the finish with a solid win. With over 300m of elevation covered twice, more than ten times that of the Melbourne marathon, this was a top time and to cap it off, Sandy posted 11th place outright. Brett Budziarski came in not far back 15th outright out of over 70 runners. Marysville is a tough track In the half, Ross Kinsella was looking deadly and he was supported by Tigger, Kathy Souter, Pete Mitchell, Helen O'Hagan, Vasanta and John Signorini. In the 10km race were Dave Souter and Pete Vince. Vincey has done all the Marysville runs Ross was first over the line in the Half but due to a wrong turn was DQ d he took it well and he was delighted with a good run as he should. Tigger collected the trophy so we kept it in the family. Page 3
Roadrunners and yes, you guessed it Collingwood. Mike has been a member of KR since 2001 and it would be fair to say Mike has a passion for Knox Roadrunners equal to Eddie McGuire s passion for that famous football club. Mike has been a long serving committee member and was our President from Dave coaxes a run out of that dodgy Achilles Special thanks to Steven Taylor for the photos. 50k Alan 5:08:34 42k Sandy 3:33:44 Brett Budziarski 3:38:22 21k Ross 1:17:26 Bryan 1:26:58 Pete Mitchell 1:37:14 Helen O 1:47:57 John Sig 1:52:05 Kathy 1:55:56 Vasanta 2:25:07 10k Dave Souter 1:01:31 Peter Vince 1:02:16 If you want to chat while on your run about pb s, injuries, football, marathons or, how the stock market is travelling, then Mike is the man. He has it covered! Here is a bit more of an insight into one of Knox Roadrunners true and dare I say it, loveable characters! Tigger at full speed up the hill Know your members Mike Bower Article by: Grant Richo Scurry VP When you hear the name Mike Bower, there are two things that immediately come to mind. Knox Richo, if you are going to be pres, you need to learn the words: Good old Collingwood... How did you get involved with the club Mike? I joined up following Steve Kelly s encouragement in My first run was the Box Hill Maccas run I ran with Bobby Sayers. Page 4
What has been your most memorable running moment? I guess my first marathon being Melbourne Beating Milan is memorable too (and regular). What s something we don t know? I was a torch-bearer for the 2000 Olympics. I needed to pass a medical, and to follow their training plan for the 500 metre run. If the decision was made that you could only run one more run, what one would it be and why? Great Ocean Road the best run of the year. I love the course and the whole KR weekend; 23k is my distance. Sunday lunch after the run is a cracker. Tell us a bit about the rest of the Bower clan. What do you do for a job? I m sometimes a management consultant, and sometimes I m unemployed. This year has been quiet (I painted 5 rooms at home) but I am now with MAXimas, a software company deploying transport & logistics software. I enjoy the regular change of scenery that consulting gives me. I get paid to talk a lot a dream job. Mike, Katherine, Rick, Lesley & Tim I m married to Lesley of course and I m delighted we share KR together. Tim 29 is an accountant just returned from 18 months in Asia. Rick 27 is a Lieutenant in the Army deployed to East Timor in Kat 23 is at university doing Education. They all supposedly live at home and we love it when all are there. We have never run together, but we all run. In full flight KR regalia, and a glass of red Page 5
Mike, your passion for the club is infectious. What is it about KR that you love so much? All KR members are like family to me. I enjoy sharing the highs & lows of our running lives. I did not think Lesley would follow me into marathon running, and I did not think you could make great lifelong friends running both have been achieved. We just love it. Mike Bower, a committed loyal club member and not a bad bloke! Heather White fun-run A big attendance was there for the 16 th running of the Heather White fun run. The major award being the Barry Boyd was appropriately won by Grant Richo Scurry. Imagine being responsible for providing the Guinness for our Smokey run, and forgetting... KR Christmas Party This year we ventured back to Acorn on Forest for an Aussie Outback Christmas. Hosted by our President Bret, and organised by Grant, Neil and Karyn, it was another roaring success. Pete & Heather on the dance floor Crocodile Dundee Dress-up prizes were won by Lesley & Vic who looked a younger man with the blonde hair. Handyman was the theme but it looks more like the Village People Richo is a worthy winner of the Barry Boyd The Pres, Anja & Richo presenting the 2011 Greg (Who has the best pec s?) Our major club awards were as usual tough to select but both were Page 6
worthy winners. Anja Ahale won the Greg Palmer Most Improved for several new PB s following a huge year of training and racing. Anthony Boulton is a popular winner of the Leo Rooney Best Clubperson award for all the things he does to support our club. Congratulations to Anja & Anthony. Nick s Half Ironman Nick Thompson competed in the Canberra Half Ironman in early December in his own words: Well what fun in Canberra? Yes it s true it is allowed - some of us were slugging it out around our wonderful capital. So to the gory details: 6:11 Nick Thompson a real athlete Gav & Bret presenting Leo to Anthony. Gav s pec s have slipped a bit 10 KR There are two KR members celebrating milestones in 2012, and they are big names. Lesley & Neil joined us in 2002 and have stuck to us. Congratulations on 10 years membership and in those 10 years they have run 11 Melbourne Marathons between them, plus many other running achievements. The swim was good 41mins, the bike was hard work and on the third lap I was basically done at 3:07, this was 1hr longer that it took me to do the Eastlink bike ride (75k) however being new to this bike, it was in fact the longest I had ridden it! The run was just hang-on walk / run whatever just get to the end. My target was to beat my mates time in the Singapore which I thought was 6hrs, it was 6:29 - so mission accomplished. So for a first timer to 70.3 and only my 4th Tri having done 3 sprint events in the last few weeks I was quite satisfied now to Melbourne, well if I can get some really solid and longer training in, I would love to think 12-13hrs is possible. I feel well, no issues, which is strange having done so many ultras and sometimes taking weeks to get over them and begin training again - I'm off for a quick run tomorrow! Lesley & Neil Page 7
