PO Box 2273, Bayswater Village LPO, Bayswater, Knox Roadrunners January 2011 Our summer newsletter is mainly social but we had some great results at the Marysville Marathon and at Sussan 10km. Our member in focus this time is the Master himself John Raskas. He is as smooth as the Beemer he drives. Our new members are listed plus those coming up to milestones. Also, the KR singlet has been to Africa Victoria Falls. This is our big night to bring along partners and talk about the year that was. Some of us are more interested in the year ahead! Our two main club awards are presented. The Greg Palmer Most Improved was won this year by: Sandy Doyle Christmas Party Our fantastic Christmas Party was again held at Acorn on Forest in The Basin. Gavin Morton won the Leo Rooney Best Clubperson for 2010 presented by DT Anthony, Deb, Helen, Naughty Marie & Dave Thanks to Helen Stanley & Karyn Mitchell for the organisation as usual it was a great night. It was like the Academy Awards with nominations and cheering and envelopes nervously opened. The difference is that our winners and speeches are better. The party then got into full swing with dancing and music and the Page 1
chatter was just as loud as the music. We did not have a break until they swept us out. It was a fantastic end to a fantastic year for KR in Page 2
Heather White Fun Run In December we had the 16 th running of the Heather White Fun Run. This year it doubled as our Kris Kringle. At Heather s my what a large baguette you have Anthony. Winner of the prestigious Barry Boyd perpetual trophy was John Raskas awarded by his technology advisor Dave Black. Sandy Doyle was a standout performer with a win in the ladies marathon in a brilliant time only 4 weeks after Melbourne. Ross Kinsella kept the men in with a good showing with a 2 nd outright in the half. Issy Bespalov was 2 nd woman home in the half. Tigger & Alan also had top results. Marysville Marathon Name Event Time Place Gender Alan 45 4: Sandy 42 3: Toby 42 4: Ross Half 1: Isobel Half 1: Bret Half 1: Veronica Half 1: Kathy Half 1: Linda Half 1: Geraldine Half 2: Kim Half 2: Neil Half 2: Matt Half 2: Peter V Half 2: David S Half 2: Bryan 10 0: Sam 10 0: Margaret 10 1: At Marysville in November we had 18 KR s competing. 4 New Members Showing off one of his 325 Beemers at Aireys Welcome to Linda Fairhurst. Also welcome back to Irene Taylor. Irene was a member some years ago. Injuries have been overcome and retirement for Irene means a return to KR. Know your members John Raskas John is one of our early members having joined in He is our Marathon Master. John has forgotten more about Marathons than most of us will ever know. He leads the training for the Marathon each year and is still going strong with a great finish in Family? Alistair my eldest has a unit in Lynbrook and is working in the Mulgrave area. Our second son Tim is a tradesman and has been working in the mines in the Pilbara, Western Australia for the last three years. Our youngest Erin is based in Alice Springs and she is the advocate for child protection and women s welfare for aboriginal communities based in NT, SA and WA. I am very proud of what my children have achieved in life bearing in mind that they lost their mother Fran to a melanoma cancer in A very special person and a very special mother, her legacy lives on in our children. MM2010 in good form What do you do for a quid? I have worked for BMW since 1983 and am the Warranty Manager. I have a new BMW every 3 months and that equates to 325 new BMW s so far. How did you join KR? I Joined KR in September I bumped into Jeff Smith at Knox Track one evening and he mentioned there was this local running club that really catered for long distance running enthusiasts. Being September KR was really into their long runs and on my first morning with the club a 36 KM was scheduled. Over the last 3 to 5 KM there were three of us left out in front, Peter White, myself and this funny little individual who was dreadfully anti social, and had the gait of a duck. Page 4
Ironically some 20 years later I won a perpetual trophy awarded in his honour (Barry Boyd). You were a gun footballer? My final football years were spent with Mazenod Old Collegians (good old Catholic boys). I was fortunate to play in three grand finals two of which we won and the other a loss by 5 points. Interestingly after all these years that loss is as vivid in my memory as the two victories. In 1977 I turned to athletics to prolong a football career and my allegiances changed once I joined Knox Athletic Club. business and family life as well as a direct result of this experience. Way back in 1978 my inexperience led me to believe that 42 Km was simply a test of the distance, fellow competitors and the elements. It was only post race that I realized it is also very much a measure of one s metal. I have run 23 Melbourne Marathons, 6 under three hours with a personal best of My best time for the half is and 10KM All these times were achieved in What does KR do for you? The Knox Roadrunners club has been extremely important in my life. I have established a number of very close friendships over the last twenty years and I regard myself as quite lucky that by chance I bumped into a club member who directed me towards the Bayswater clubrooms. John with a couple of Hot Coppers at his 60th Running record: I will never forget my first marathon (Melbourne) in For some naïve reason I had no respect for the distance nor did I have any concept of the personal effort that one required to run 42 KM. At the 22KM I was a spent force, however, possibly a little vanity or narcissism got me to where I needed to be outside the Melbourne Town Hall in 4 hours 42 minutes. I have respected the distance, the commitment and the effort required to run 42 KM since that day. I made a personal commitment to myself that never ever again would I take on such a task unprepared. I carried this ethos through into my Over the years I have watched a small community based club turn into one of Australia s premier long distance running associations and we are all very much proud members. One only has to mention the words Knox Roadrunner or display the famous blue & black uniform and the reaction is one of awe. John Raskas, another big legend of KR and a real good bloke. KR 10 & 20 year members At KR we pride ourselves on our members joining and staying for the long haul. In 2011 we have a few folks having big anniversaries. Michelle Tham & John Raskas have now been members for 20 years. Shelly must have been at primary school when she joined (and she is Page 5
still there). These two are a couple of our very best runners and they are fantastic members. Check with any of them to join them for a Sunday trail run visitors always welcome, and they will also welcome any donations to the Oxfam cause. Put Friday 1 April and Saturday 2 April into your diary. Support during the day and night is fantastic. Vinceys Mt Martha Run Michelle & John have run a few k s together Those with 10 years at KR in 2011 are Kathy Souter, Dave Weedon, Gavin Morton, Pete Bignell, and Mike Bower. Well done. Special thanks to Peter & Annette for opening their holiday home to us. We had a great run, swim, breakfast and for some lucky ones, a wine tasting and lunch. Oxfam 2011 Four hardy souls have entered Oxfam under the team name of Knox Roadrunners. Kim, Grant, Nicole & Bret have committed and are now in full training. Page 6
Sussan 10km Our ladies have had a great year and the Sussan 10km was one of our best results of the year. Bron, Sandy and Lavinia all won their age categories and a big PB to Marie. Marie Bronwen Sandy Lavinia Kim Irabina We gave Irabina Autism our annual donation during December. This year we contributed $1,500 to assist their program that helps local kids with autism to prepare for school. This is the 6 th consecutive year we have given them assistance. Well done to all KR members it is a good thing we do. Marie on the podium after her 10k PB of sub 40 Day at the Races 20 March 2011 KR is frocking up for the Yarra Valley Cup on Sunday 20 March. Toby is a nags man as was the great man Barry Boyd. We will give details closer to the day but friends and family are welcome to bring a picnic lunch and join us for a day at Yarra Glen it should be a hoot. We will have a tent for the day just for KR and friends. All thanks to Toby. KR members 2010 Irabina donation Warby Trail bike ride: On a day when the KR trail runners were toiling on the 2 Bays 28k/56k run, the wiser KR members sauntered out to Woori Yallock for a leisurely ride. Coffee and muffins were the reward at Warburton. For those who deserved even more, we adjourned to Killara Estate winery for a tasting and lunch in conducive surrounds. Don t miss this gem in That s Toby in the green hat Page 7
Toby in Africa: Toby & Renee are just back from Africa and have a tale to tell: Another tough day on the Warby trail 2Bays Trail run A big group of KR s descended on the peninsula for the 28k and 56k trail run in January. Our Oxfam Fab4 used the 28k as a warm-up. The trip was amazing and I got plenty of good runs in. One in particular stood out when early one morning Renee and I ran to a main village and back. It must have been half an hour or so before school and as we ran kids ran with us, until by the end there must have been about 40 kids running with us. Something you would see in a movie. Unfortunately we have no photo of that to share but we will always have the memory of it. The photos are on the edge of the Ngorogoron crater in the serengeti and at Victoria Falls. 56k Bryan 6:11 Nick 7:41 28k Ross 2:06 Michael Clarke 2:20 Pete Mitchell 2:26 Helen O Hagan 2:26 Isobel 2:30 Grant 3:17 Kim 3:17 Nicole 3:17 Bret 3:17 Vasanta 3:41 Page 8
