Since you work in the media industry, I would like to invite you and your coworkers to participate in the 2018 Medtronic TC 10 Mile Media Challenge on Sunday, October 7, sponsored by Twin Cities In Motion. The Media Challenge, as many of you know, is a great opportunity for your organization s employees to run in the popular Medtronic TC 10 Mile, build staff morale and fitness through the event, and have fun on an autumn weekend when 30,000 runners participate in Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon Weekend events and some 300,000 spectators line the streets and parkways of the Twin Cities. This year s Media Challenge will again include the centerpiece trophy competition designed to recognize the fastest media organization in the competition, as well as an array of informal competitions recognizing teams for participation, improvement, growth, and team spirit. New in 2018, we re excited to welcome Media Challenge runners to a heated finish line tent for a celebration fitting the event -- with catered food and Summit beer! Important Note: Media Challenge team creation and runner registration takes place BEFORE the registration drawing opens for the race. For Media Challenge runners to avoid the registration drawing, they must register by July 5. (See details in the attached materials.) The attached documents will provide general information about the Media Challenge, outline the rules of the competition, and present a helpful checklist for Media Challenge team captains. 2 Media Challenge Competitions & Rules The Medtronic TC 10 Mile Media Challenge is built around the Trophy Competition for the Fastest Team but also includes a number of for the fun of it competitions that we hope will add enjoyment to the event and value to the Media Challenge for your organization and your team members. Eligibility Any media organization, profit or non-profit, may participate. Only full-time and part-time employees and interns of the organization are eligible to compete in the Media Challenge. Family members and friends of employees are not eligible for the Media Challenge. They are not permitted to register for the race using a Media Challenge guaranteed Medtronic TC 10 Mile code. Team creation will be conducted online via TCM s registration partner imathlete. A team creation fee of $35 per team plus an imathlete service fee will be charged at registration. The team creation fee covers the administration of the program and the cost of the trophy. If your organization already created a Media Challenge team for the TC 1 Mile earlier this year, your team is already created for the Medtronic TC 10 Mile. Once team registration is confirmed, team captains will receive codes for individual registration. Individual team member registration begins today and continues through July 5. Individuals will be required to pay the $80 individual registration fee. If your organization pays its runners entry fee, please contact Charlie Mahler (Charlie@tcmevents.org) for further information. Organizations may field as many teams as they like one department could compete against another as well as the rest of the field, for example -- but each team would be required to pay a registration fee of $35.

3 Trophy Competition Fastest Team In order to score in the Trophy Competition of the Media Challenge, each team must consist of a minimum of four finishers. A female and a runner 40 years old or older must be included among the scorers, although one runner may fulfill both requirements for a team. A team s entire roster of finishers will be used to determine the team score. Results will be age-graded based on chip time. The team with the lowest score wins. The formula used to determine each team member s score and, by extension, the team s score is: Runner s place within age/gender division, divided by the number of finishers in the division, times one hundred. A sample team s individual scoring might look like this: 15th in W 40-44; 1665 finishers in age division: (15/1665) x 100 = nd in M 25-29; 2816 finishers in age division: (32/2816) x 100 = th in M 20-24; 2397 finishers in age division: (30/2397) x 100 = th in M 20-24; 2397 finishers in age division: (38/2397) x 100 = th in W finishers in age division: (45/2105) x 100 = 2.14 The scores added equals a raw score of 9.57 The raw score is then divided by the number of runners on the team 9.57 / 5 runners which results in a team score of 1.91points. The winning team will receive an inscribed trophy in this division. Non-Trophy Competitions Again this year, the Media Challenge will include for fun competitions that, while they won t entail winning a trophy, will offer enjoyment, bragging rights, and opportunities for team-building among your squad. Most Finishers Competition The team with the most finishers in the Media Challenge will be declared the champion of this competition.

4 Most Improved Team Competition The team that improves the greatest number of places in the Trophy Competition compared to 2017 will be declared the Most Improved Team. The Fastest-Growing Team Competition The team that adds the greatest percentage of finishers to its team compared to 2017 will be declared the Fastest-Growing Team. The Top New Team Competition The highest-placing team that did not score in the 2017 Media Challenge will be named the Top New Team. Back of the Pack Competition This distinction recognizes the slowest team based on the finish times of all the runners on a team, divided by the number of runners finishing. Team Spirit Competition We will recognize the team that shows the most team spirit prior to the race on social media and at the event itself. Share your team s Medtronic TC 10 Mile Media Challenge experience from group training runs through the finish line on Twitter and Instagram using the hashtag #TC10Media. 5 Media Challenge Team Captain s Checklist May/June Create your team online via the link found in the Media Challenge section of TCM s media page. After you complete the form and pay the $35 team registration fee, you ll receive an electronic receipt of the transaction via TCM s registration partner imathlete and a team creation confirmation . Shortly afterward, expect to receive registration codes from TCM s Catherine Bishop (Catherine@tcmevents.org) for your runners to use for their individual registrations. Recruit employees from your company to run! Scoring teams for the trophy competition must have at least four members. Remember, you need at least one woman and one runner over 40 (one runner may fulfill both requirements) in order to be eligible for the trophy competition. Individual runners must register online by July 5 with codes supplied by the team captain. Media Challenge runners must use this code to be automatically placed on your roster. NOTE: Only employees of your organization may use these codes. Share your team s Medtronic TC 10 Mile Media Challenge experience from group runs through the finish line on Twitter and Instagram using the hashtag #TC10Media. Make sure team members are registered by July 5. July If runners from your organization miss the July 5 registration deadline, advise them to enter the Medtronic TC 10 Mile registration drawing starting July 6, if they wish to run the race. If they are selected in the drawing, they can be added to your Media Challenge roster.

6 Organize team training runs and seminars on topics of interest to runners. Contact Charlie at for information and resources. August Confirm final roster sent from race office. Notify Catherine Bishop of any changes. Late September Expect an informational from Charlie Mahler with final details and instructions for the Media Challenge. Remind team members to pick up their race numbers and timing chips on Friday, October 5, from noon until 8:00 p.m. and Saturday, October 5, from 10:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Saint Paul RiverCentre.
