1 NORTH EAST RIVER YACHT CLUB At The Peake of the Chesapeake Member Newsletter February 2017 MANY THANKS Please let me start this issue of the NERYC Waterline by thanking Vivian Molloy for her time and effort that she has dedicated to producing the club newsletter for the past five years. (Vivian is retiring from being the editor and to her it probably felt like decades.) I am going to fill in for a bit until we can get someone to volunteer to take over. (Any takers?!?) So for the time being if you have any interests, articles, notes, etc. to share with your fellow members please send them to me. I am going to add a couple of new sections to the newsletter to shake things up a bit. Look for the job board and trading post near the end. That s it for now. Please enjoy your Waterline. 3 NEW YEARS EVE Over 60 members danced away the night on New Year s Eve on December 31 st to the sounds of Bob Cross. Great food and fun was had by all. 3

4 FROM THE COMMODORE Well it s the end of January, the middle of what so far is a mild winter, and spring is now looking not that far away. If we can sneak through February without much bad weather, that would be great. At the club, we had an eventful January, starting off with a fun and well attended New Year s Eve party. I m sure there are many pictures included in this Waterline. Birthday Night was also well attended with some special Karaoke by talented members (the names shall be withheld to protect their honor). We also had our first themed dinner of the winter on Saturday January 28, which was a tapas dinner served family style. Again, we had a great crowd and a fun time. These themed dinners are a fun evening that let s Chef Ernie expand the menu a little and show us his talents (best frogs legs I ve had in a while). Look for more information on these themed dinners from Rear Commodore Brian Fuchs and I encourage everyone to come out to at least one of these dinners. As far as the goings on with the BOG, I can report that we have made progress on our loan refinancing. We have several banks offering us new terms that we are considering. We are looking to generate capital that can be used for club maintenance and improvements and meaningfully lowering our monthly payments. For the past 10 years, the club and past BOGs have had an excellent track record making our loan payments routinely and on time. As such, we are a good customer and this has put us in a good position to refinance. Nothing is final yet but I am encouraged by the progress. I will keep the membership appraised of the progress on this and please feel free to ask me any questions in the interim. Because of the potential to refinance our loan and generate some capital, we are also in the process of activating the Long-Range Planning Committee to evaluate the strategic needs of the club. This includes evaluating some enhancements to the club for current and future members to enjoy, as well as addressing some necessary maintenance items that should be taken care of proactively. Past Commodore Bob Gamble will be heading up this task. Look for more information as it develops. Finally, I want to note that we have expanded our membership drive this year to include three open house weekends; one each in February, March and April. Membership is vital to the health of the club and filling the marina. We will need help with advertising, setting out the yard signs and being at the club to show the place off during the open houses. As always, our best source of marketing is the word of mouth of our membership, so please tell your friends and acquaintances about NERYC. Look for information from Membership Chair Judy Murray on the dates of the open houses and please help where you can. The next one of these I write will be the beginning of March, not so far away. 5 OPEN HOUSE We have several Open Houses coming up in the next three months with the first one in February. We are trying something different this year to drive more memberships and slip rentals earlier. If you have friends and family that have thought about joining NERYC, this is the perfect opportunity for them to come and learn about your club. Volunteers are always welcome at the open house event to greet and meet prospective members and to offer tours of our great facility and docks. 5

6 The first NERYC Theme Dinner of 2017 was a rousing success on Saturday evening January 28 th. We had 37 people attend a tasting of thirteen (13!) various Spanish delights paired with three (3) different wines. Chef Ernie and his kitchen staff truly out did themselves with everything prepared from scratch. Chrissy and Jeff both did a wonderful job keeping the crew in the Burgee Lounge happy. Menu Items included: Manchego Cheese Fondue, Shrimp Banderilla Skewers, Cumin-Flavored Mushroom Salad, Grouper in Orange Butter Sauce, Potato-Tuna-Egg Salad, Frog Legs in Garlic Sauce, Mussels-Chorzio in Green Sauce, Stuffed Squid with Spicy Tomato Sauce, Veal Pate with Dried Cranberries and Herbs, Spanish Sausage-Sweet-Sour Figs, Spicy Meat Empanadas, Veal Meatballs in Spicy Chorzio Sauce and Pork Ribs with Garlic Sauce 6

14 HONORARY MEMBERSHIP Honorary Member Walter Dorsett In December the Bog voted Mr. Walter Dorsett of North East, MD in as an honorary member of NERYC. I collaborated with Judy Murray and sent him the following letter to which he enthusiastically replied and accepted. Please welcome Mr. Dorsett to the club when you see him taking his many wonderful photographs in our marina. 14

This will need to be repaired before the roof rots. Mike Wager and I are discussing building a small shed addition to the left of the dock shed to hold sails so maybe that roof work can correspond with the DM shed roof repair The posts that supports the left gate is sheared off. The gate and fence on the left side of this entrance need to be removed and the concrete in which the old post goes needs to be broken out with a sledge hammer of electric jack hammer. New post needs to be set and fence and gate reinstalled. All filters need to be cleaned in the various window AC units in the club Need to cut up large logs that have made their way in over winter so far Need to cut up logs in wood pile in picnic area A contractor will be in soon to cut down the dead tree behind the blue cottage (overhanging the dinghy racks). A work crew will be need to clean up debris and to move logs to picnic area and further process. The water line that serves D dock blew off its barbed fitting in the fall while I was blowing out the water lines for winter. Needs to be fixed Several flexible electric conduits and or water line are broken loose under A dock bridge and need to be supported Fireman type of fitting failed last year and was allowing system to suck air. It was temporarily repaired with tape. Need to determine size of fittings and order new one to replace the bad to avoid pump out issues this year. Paint mooring numbers onto mooring balls before installation / stencils are in dock shed The Day Sailor was never put into the water last year. I will work to clean it, wax it, paint the bottom, install the mast and launch if I have some help. The fencing in the herb garden that blocks the back of the AC units from view has fallen over. Need to have new legs installed or something else put up as a screen 15

Although there aren t any listings this month, Spring Cleaning is rapidly approaching so get ready to clean out your boat lockers and cabinets and send in any items you wish to part with so it can be listed here. Be sure to include a photo, brief description and the price (or trade for xyz). 16
