1 NORTH EAST RIVER YACHT CLUB At The Peake of the Chesapeake Member Newsletter May 2017 WELCOME ABOARD Welcome to NERYC s May Waterline. I hope that you find this monthly newsletter informative on the activities in and around NERYC. We have a busy Month of May in front of us with Opening Day festivities kicking it all off. Boats are arriving in the marina and slips are filling up. We still have a few slips left so don t wait if you are contemplating renting one. Tell your friends and family about the club. Remember your participation and membership are what keeps this club going and now that we are entering our 88 th season we want to be ensure it stays around for another 88 years. I want whomever will write the May 2105 publication of the NERYC Waterline to be able to talk about the club entering its 176 season! Of course I plan on being there because while I plan on living forever I certainly do not want to still be dock master and the Waterline editor at the same time. I m going to ask one more time, can someone please step forward and take over the Waterline going forward. So for the time being if you have any interests, articles, notes, etc. to share with your fellow members please send them to me throughout the month of May and I will include them in the next issue. Dave Brzezowski-Dock Master 1
2 FROM THE COMMODORE Hello NERYC Members, Well, it s officially the start of the boating season and it s time for Opening Day! Opening day reflects the spirt of NERYC. These ceremonies and the festivities surrounding this weekend are the result of countless hours of volunteer effort by members of the club, led by Vice Commodore Bob and Lady Vivian Molloy. It is the camaraderie of the members, along with a love of boating and the Chesapeake Bay, which has kept this tradition alive for these 88 years. It is this tradition that will continue to keep the club active into the future. Opening Day weekend offers all of the best that NERYC has to offer. The Margaretville party starting on Friday Night has become a great tradition that offers everyone a chance to catch up after the long winter. The Opening Day Ceremonies on Saturday offers a little ceremony and tradition to officially open the club for the season. Following the ceremonies, it s back to more fun in the burgee lounge for the Kentucky Derby Party and a hat contest for the ladies. A little friendly wagering on the races keeps it interesting. Then join us on Sunday for an excellent brunch served at the club. Again, thank you all for coming out and enjoying NERYC for our 2017 Opening Day weekend. For members, enjoy your club, and for our guests, make yourself at home. Paul Miller Commodore, NERYC 2

4 OPENING DAY FUN KENTUCKY DERBY Hi everyone, We hope you all plan to attend the 88 th NERYC OPENING DAY on Saturday May 6th. It is a great party with lots of food, drink, and camaraderie. If that isn t enough to entice you, there is the long standing KENTUCKY DERBY tradition where you can bet on a horse and win prizes. The race usually starts about 6:00. Beyond that, there is a HAT CONTEST. Some hats are worthy of being at the actual race and some are just silly or impromptu. All are fun. There are many prizes. John and Jan Sergeant PS: Guys can parade with hats too. Rumor has it that Paul Miller is going to parade and wow all. 4

However, I received the write up on the next page from Stephen Schindel, Commodore of the UD team, and I wanted to share it with everyone since this was such a nice event at our club.
