North East River Yacht Club At The Peake of the Chesapeake Social, Power or Sail, We Have Something For Everyone Member Newsletter MAY Commodore s Report Welcome to the 79 th season of the North East River Yacht Club! Opening weekend festivities are upon us and I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has worked so diligently to ready our clubhouse, grounds and docks for another fabulous boating season. VC Jon Fowler and Lady Lynn and B&G Chair John Beardsley and Lady Susan have rallied the troops and our facility has never looked better. This year Susan Woron has enlisted volunteers to adopt various garden areas and these member volunteers have spent countless hours preparing their spaces and planting perennials, annuals and herbs for all of our enjoyment. Frank Wile, Doug Cain, Ron Roecker, Al Black, Bill Johnson, Dan Johnson, Ed Kennedy and Gary built picnic tables for the docks and picnic area; Susan Andrews and her crew have redesigned the picnic grounds, Don Cruse brought his backhoe and graded the picnic area. It was then delineated, seeded to create a top notch space for our members to picnic and enjoy the sunset from a prime waterfront location. George Braun will build a new brick barbeque season! The Taylors have donated a large tent to use on the picnic grounds when there in inclement weather. Sharlene Wilkins repaired our awning on the verandah, and John and his crew spent a Saturday morning installing it as the CBYCA BOG met inside, bearing witness to the fact that NERYC is a thriving and vital club. On work day 2 weeks ago at least 50 members braved rain and wind to clear the grounds, plant flowers, haul debris, install new signage, power wash and clean the clubhouse Many members who could not physically work to beautify the club have donated funds for other members to further their vision special thanks to the Watkins for donating materials for the picnic tables and the new vases at our club entrance. Even after the Shakedown Cruise this past weekend, members were hard at work planting more flowers and shrubbery in the containers on the verandah and at the entrance, while PC George and Lady Suzanne Braun worked with the Beardsleys, and the Somers, on the herb garden by the back entrance. I am looking forward to welcoming all our members guests this weekend and showing off all of your hard work these last few weeks. If the responses of our visiting CBYCA guests last week are any accomplished these last few weeks. I would also like to take a moment to acknowledge those responsible for the successful events we have had this past month.both the Murder Mystery dinner and Oyster Roast and Silent Auction were spectacular, sell out events. Ron and Justine Roecker and the cast of mobsters and showgirls wowed the crowd, and the debut performances of several of our Thursday night diners had the room in stitches, especially that old broad in the Roeckers Rocker! RC Roger and Lady Linda Hughes and their dedicated committee boasted record profits at the Silent Auction last weekend and not only has the Commodore s Ball been funded for this year but at least $1500 of the profits have been added to the Capital fund. After this auction s success you won t want to miss the Honey Do live auction later this summer. This weekend FC Joe Reynolds and Lady Laura and their assistants Steve Hogan and Russ Zehnacker, hosted the first cruise of the season to the Chesapeake City. They had one of the best turnouts for a Shakedown Cruise in recent years with at least 8 boats and 40 plus members in attendance. Laura s Pirate Punch kept everyone warm and we were once again regaled with stories of cruises past by Dwain the Brain Watkins aided by a little J&B! On the horizon, the Fleet Pass and Review and Dock Party hosted by Doug Cain is just a little more than 2 short weeks away members will proceed in procession behind FC Joe Reynolds and announcer gives the vital stats on said vessel. The sailors will next parade with spinnakers flying high behind the Sail Chairs Barbi and Bruce Taylor before everyone congregates on the docks for one blast of a party. Many members have donated cash, beverages and food for the day s festivities so come out to what I hope will be a new annual tradition. Casino Night, and Past Commodore/New Member Night are both a just over a month away. Susan Andrews promises that no one will not go away a loser at her tables, so whether your game is poker, craps, roulette or bingo there will be something to suit everyone s fancy. Our spring racing series commences this weekend and there are cruises scheduled every month. The Queen of the Bay Pageant is also held at the Maryland Yacht Club on June 1 st and I encourage Princess Kelly Whittington as she completes again for the coveted environmental essay on the Bay, attendance at club openings, poise, a personal interview by a panel of judges and then will be asked a series of questions pertaining to her biography and essay, in front of the live audience. This is a great weekend for members, princesses and commodores alike hosted by Maryland Yacht Club which will celebrate their 100 th year. So, come back home to the club this season and participate in one or more of our many activities scheduled this spring! See you all Opening Day Commodore Lisa Mack

3 FROM THE VICE In a matter of days, NERYC will be celebrating its 79 th Opening Day ceremony on Saturday, May 3 rd, 2008, at 4:00 PM. We have members and the kitchen providing free food for all in attendance. There will also be free beer and wine available from 3:00 PM till one hour after the ceremony. Yacht Club Officers from around the Chesapeake Bay are expected to attend, to help us celebrate. I hope that everyone can make room in their schedule to be there and enjoy the celebrations of this long standing tradition. The night before, on Friday May 2 nd, we will have our Margaritaville Party night with music by DJ Robert Cross. For dinner we will have a buffet meal set up, or if you would like something different, a limited menu selection will be available. Thanks in advance go to everyone who volunteered to help make the Opening Day happen. Especially Sharlene Wilkins, whose fundraising effort selling advertisements for the Opening Day Program, is fundamental to defray the costs associated with the weekend s festivities. April 12 th Workday resulted in a beautiful springtime transformation of our Club grounds. Great thanks go out to everyone who supported the visions put forth by Susan Andrews and Susan Woron. The picnic area rehabilitation team headed up by Susan Andrews was hard at work putting in pilings, railroad ties, moving dirt, grass seed, etc. There are still checklist items that remain to be done, but it is looking better already. Major outstanding items include the pathway gravel and getting the grass established. We want to encourage members to keep off the newly planted grass until it is established. Once the grass has grown, will have plenty of room to spread out and make full use of the entire area. The rest of the Club grounds gardening were coordinated by Susan Woron, who created the largest subcommittee I ve seen in years. We now have teams of people who have taken ownership of various gardening locations. A coordinated vision of what should go into each gardening area was established at earlier meetings with guidance from master gardener E-Bette Shidler. We still had the other usual chores such as raking, picking up limbs, clearing the beach debris, as well as some inside jobs such as polishing the brass bar rails in the burgee lounge, scrubbing the dining chair seats, restroom cleaning, etc. The work list included more than we had in manpower to complete, but that always seems to be the case. Special thanks to John Beardsley who coordinated the jobs as well as providing the much needed breakfast nourishment before work started. Signs have been made and should be posted soon on the property grounds. Dock rules, insurance requirements of contractors, private property, will be signs to meet our basic insurance requirements. You will also see one of our older recycled signs at the entrance to our picnic area. Power Crisis On April 26, NERYC clubhouse experienced a power outage that lasted for quite some time which affected Club operations. Steve Dougherty was up in New York visiting his daughter, cancelled dinner and a Broadway play in order to get back to the club and oversee the disaster. In the meantime, John Landan with April Conway s help, cabled temporary communications between upstairs office and the cash register and brought up Digital Dining program. At first glance it looks like the power outage/electrical line pulse hit the club with a direct hit. We have now lost use of two air conditioners located upstairs, an office computer in Linda's office, the large copier in the outer office, the new Alto-Shaam cook and hold oven in the kitchen. In the meantime, John Beardsley has brought electrical contractor and later a air conditioning contractor. Steve Dougherty is following up with a kitchen equipment repair service. oversee copier repair or replacement. Bob Efford has already made calls to the insurance company to log in the event. Thanks to our Fellow members who sprung into action. Boat Inspection at our NERYC Marina Docks May 17, 2008 by US Coast Guard Auxiliary 9:00-11:30 AM Contact Art Wheaton Inspection May 18 th, 2008 by Northeast Power Squadron Contact Russ Zehnacker A very large contingent of CBYCA representatives/members meeting. They all got an opportunity to partake of our luncheon and gaze upon our new docks. For some, it was their first visit to see the docks and for others it was a revisit with very encouraging comments as to how beautiful the docks and clubhouse are. Issues of interest to me were: Operation of Loran-C to continue as eloran (enhanced), to be a backup/complement to GPS. Push for maintenance funding for Intracoastal Waterway. EPA permit required for recreational boats after Sept However there is legislation in the works, S 2776 Clean Boating exemption for recreational boats. Currently, only the two Senators from Maryland are supporting this bill. Time to write you NJ/DE/ PA Senators. US Supreme Court allows Delaware to block the LNG terminal in Logan Township, NJ. Don t hesitate to poke around the CBYCA.Org website for other interesting information. Thanks for all your help. V/C Jon Fowler

6 FROM THE REAR FROM ENTERTAINMENT In a few days, NERYC will celebrate its 79 th Opening Day. The Bridge and the BOG are honored to serve you, the members at this special occasion. Members have been working in our gardens, grounds and waterfront to prepare for your visit. Thanks to you all. Your efforts are what make NERYC a such great place to spend time. Not only is our club the friendliest but our sunsets and view of the river are truly as good as it gets. We hope that you will linger awhile and enjoy our hospitality, and that the events of the day will provide you with fond memories. My thanks to all involved in the Silent Auction which was a huge success. We achieved a revenue total of $4,400 with 115 attendees. I can not thank the membership enough for their generous contributions this year. The fantastic turnout and enthusiastic support you gave for the Silent Auction certainly exceeded anyone's expectations. I am glad to report that my goal of $3000 for Commodore's Ball fund was far exceeded, so approx. $1,400 will be now be allocated to the clubs Capital Improvement Account for any necessary repairs or replacements this year. I especially want to thank Linda and her team of Ginny and Regina, and others assisted that the committee. Also thanks to Steve, April and team for the work they did and the quality of the food and service. The Rear Commodores next and last fundraiser will be the Crab Feast and Honey Do live Auction which is always great fun. Robert and I will be advertising this event in the coming weeks. See you Opening Day weekend. R/C Roger Hughes Spring is here and the club is officially open for the season to become the social hub for the membership. May is full of social club house events, four races, and a cruise to keep the membership coming to the club. Last month saw the most successful Birthday / Anniversary 50/50 basket drawing so far this year. Much thanks to Susan Woron for a great spring basket. This months Birthday and Anniversary is on Friday May 9 th, with the DJ/ Karaoke services of DJ Rik Taylor from 7-11 PM, providing our club standard DJ Bob Cross a break after the opening weekend Margaritaville Party duties. With this Birthday and Anniversary being just two days before Mothers Day, we plan on making this a Mothers Day theme night. What that means is you will have to come out with the ladies and find out. One quick after thought for those of you that did not attend the Silent Auction/ Oyster Feast, you missed great food and a great time. For the members who are not fans of Oysters the kitchen staff put out melt in your mouth beef and ham. This auction was the most successful we have had in recent history. A big thank you is due to Linda Hughes, Ginny Sommers and Regina Leigh for their efforts in putting this event together. I can not forget to mention a thank you to Claudia Ferguson who helped in the final tabulations of the money, ensuring no one got away without paying. Don t forget if you have a birthday / anniversary or are a new member you get a free drink from the club, come out ant get it, and you have to be present to receive your drink, you can not send a proxy. We will not have a basket drawing this month due to the shear volume of chartable requests asked of the membership during opening day events. We look forward to seeing you all at the club this coming month. Robert & Regina Leigh BE THERE TO SHOW YOUR COLORS! MAY 18TH, 2008 CONTACT DOUG CAIN FOR DETAILS dougcain227@comcast.net

9 FROM THE FLEET he North East River Yacht Club offers the membership the best option on the northern bay for all amenities needed for enjoyable boating activities. As your Fleet Captain, I hope to continue the cruising program with a variety of destinations surely to meet everyone s preference. We will be cruising to Chesapeake City, Baltimore Marine Center, Baltimore Yacht Club, Maryland Yacht Club, Rock Hall, and Sassafras Harbor Marina. Your hosts for the 08 cruising season are Fleet Captain and Lady Laura, Assistant F/C Steve Hogan and Karen, Russ and Gloria Zehnacker, and Skip Best. If you are a seasoned cruiser, or have never been south of Turkey Point, please come out and enjoy the fun. By participating in these trips, you are certain to get to know your fellow members, learn to navigate up and down the Bay, and become part of the story telling adventures that evolve during each cruise. Your F/C team will be there to do whatever we can to make your cruise a safe and enjoyable. Our Shakedown Cruise to Chesapeake City was a great success with members crowding the docks at the Chesapeake Inn enjoying delicious food, and beverages including PIRATES GOLD specialty drink. Don t miss the Memorial Day Cruise to Baltimore Marine Center to get a taste of the special beverage being concocted by Karen Hogan. Advance slip reservation is important for this cruise as this is a holiday weekend. Contact me for assistance ASAP. On behalf of the Fleet Captain s crew, I welcome all new members, continuing members and guests to NERYC for another great year on the Chesapeake. F/C Joe Reynolds FROM THE DOCKS The 2008 boating season is here! Your docks and moorings are again ready to welcome members, friends and visitors to the shores of the Northeast River. Although our marina is new there is still much work to do both during the season, and in the off-season to ensure that our facilities are functioning optimally. The dock master extends his sincerest thanks to the many members who volunteered their time and talent, and frequently braved chilly winter weather to get our marina ready for the season. This year those volunteers replaced hose fittings, power washed docks, built new dingy racks, hauled and replaced mooring balls, installed lattice work beneath our ramps and performed a myriad of other tasks all necessary to keep our docks in shape. We also installed several pilings in anticipation of building a floating dock and a wave fence in the near future, so the work will continue. This year our club will again be a destination for a number of clubs from around the Bay. If you haven t done so already, please sign up for the Officer of the Day program, so that we can always insure a warm NERYC welcome to our visitors. Have a great and safe boating year. See you on the docks! Nigel Veater - Dock Master

11 FROM THE RACE COURSE Greetings NERYC Racers. It is wonderful to once again be a part of our club s 79th Opening Day celebration. To us sailors, Opening Day always brings great excitement as it coincides with the first race of the new season. After a seemingly endless winter where, with too much boat less time on our hands, we wear out the pages of our sail mags, scheme on how to improve our boat speed, upgrade our sail plan, or otherwise, just resort to dreaming of far away places where the sea is blue and the sun is warm. It s good therefore, that our boats are finally back in the water, and that racing has begun. This year with your input, the race committee has implemented some revisions to the fleet splits, race courses and procedures. Our emphasis is still to encourage participation for all skill levels, and we remain dedicated to fostering the good sportsmanship, competition and enjoyment that the sport engenders. The NERYC Sail Race Program has plenty to offer: Saturday Spring & Fall Series of 5 races each, an informal Thursday Night Series of 8 races, our CBYRA sanctioned Invitational Race, and the Charlestown Cup & Cancer Benefit Pursuit Race so mark your calendars, its going to be a busy year. Please remember to visit the website to download and review the new 2008 racing instructions. Also, please print and complete your entry forms, which must be submitted before the first race of the series. On behalf of the race committee, we thank you for your participation and continued support as we continue to grow the sail race program at NERYC. From the Junior Fleet Believe me my young friend there is nothing absolutely nothing half so much worth doing as simply mucking about In boats. Kenneth Grahame This year the Junior Sailing program is entering its fifth year and it is still growing with more kids participating each year. The club s small boat fleet also continues to expand in size, and we are now offering a division in which small boats can race on Thursday evenings. This year we are also hoping to assist our juniors to travel away and compete in some of the sanctioned regattas down the Bay. Last year, three of our young sailors, Kyle, Shannon & Brian, were certified by US Sailing as small boat instructors. This year we have already put their qualifications to good use by offering Learn to Sail instruction courses for adults. The first session has already sold out, so by all accounts this was very well received. Our kids summer camp is in July and our instructors will once again, be in pressed into service. It has been truly wonderful to witness their transformation, from the young students of our first camp five years ago, into the mentors of the next generation of budding sailors. Our club has every reason to feel proud of our junior sailors and all that our sailing programs have to offer. See you on the water. 12 12 RACING DOWN THE BAY APRIL 26/27th NERYC s crew on Born2Run competed against a tough J-80 one design fleet in the 2008 Annapolis NOOD (National Offshore One Design) Regatta this past weekend to place 10th overall. Their highest placing Daily Tipton & Brian DeBrincat. CBYRA STAR WARS REGATTA The Star Wars Regatta, which is a round robin, racing event hosted by Eastport Yacht Club, was held on April 5th. This event is open to all CBYRA High Point winners and is designed to be a competition to determine the champion among champions. This year in a new format, a fleet of J-80 sail Because of the nature of the event, only sixteen teams were invited. As a runner-up in PHRF-N division, the Southern Cross crew were only on the received the green light to participate. As the only team to make it into the finals of the event who were not from Region 3 (Annapolis), the NERYC crew did well to place seventh overall with a 3rd as their highest placing. It sounds like it was a novel experience and a good opportunity to get a jumpstart on the racing season. Bryan Whittington & Eric Pennypacker
