1 North East River Yacht Club At The Peake of the Chesapeake Social, Power or Sail, We Have Something For Everyone Member Newsletter April COMMODORE S REPORT Spring has finally arrived and we, who are boat owners, find ourselves day dreaming about preparing for Commissioning and launching for the coming season. This past weekend was the first I had an opportunity to begin working on our boat and while I was working met four NERYC members whom I have not seen for several months. One of the four I did not know was a member until he looked at me and said, Oh, you re the Commodore. Having just had a BOG meeting the night before discussing why we have a member retention problem, this encounter presented one obvious reason. Even though he said he doesn t get down to the club that often, maybe we should find out why not. We all know that if we do not come up with a way to re-engage this member, it s only a matter of time before were looking at another non-renewal. I encountered another boater who asked me some boating questions as he owned the same model Laura and I own. We chatted awhile and I mentioned being a member of NERYC and kept the boat at the new marina. He said I use to be a member there and was a very good friend of several members and mentioned their names. The morale to the story and premise for this article is that our members, new and old, need to have a sense of belonging to the club. I would like to site two examples of events held last year that packed the parking lot, picnic grounds and marina. The New Members picnic and the July 4 th party were events no one wants to miss. The events were full of excitement and everyone was having a good time, all ages, power and sail, were swapping stories of their recent boating experiences. I joined the club to have fun on the weekends away from the pressures of the job, enjoy boating, and meet people interested in boating. The old saying Loosen up and lets party still holds true. The Marketing and Membership committees are hard at work promoting our club and prospecting for new members. They need your help in keeping new members with us. If you see someone you don t know, introduce yourself, you may just save a non-renewal for next year. Commodore Joe Reynolds

3 FROM THE VICE Is summer EVER going to get here? The groundhog said we were going to have an early spring, goes to show how much he knows! I need a couple weeks of steady warm, dry, weather, so I can get the boat ready for launch. But, enough complaining Despite the cold weather, this past month was a busy one at the club. In early March, Lady Gloria and I attended the Maryland Cruising Clubs, Commodores Ball, honoring our own Eileen Law Stewart as the new Commodore. You may not be aware, but the MCC was in the process of disbanding when several members of NERYC, stepped up to the plate, and infused new life into the club. From the attendance at the Ball, I can say it looks like the club is now in good hands, and will continue to grow. The following weekend, we attended the annual "Murder Mystery Dinner", as I wrote last year, these plays keep getting better every year, and this one was no exception! The cast included several club members, who, I would never have guessed would participate, but let me tell you, if you missed this year s show, you missed performances worthy of Academy Awards! Thanks to Justine and her wonderful cast of characters for a truly enjoyable evening. On a more serious note, in addition to our regular BOG meeting, I also attended a meeting of the clubs Long Range Planning Committee. This committee has been somewhat in limbo over the past several years, but I am happy to report that it is once again alive and well, and looking into the long term growth of our club. Don't forget that Opening Day will soon be upon us. As in the past, Suzanne Braun has taken over the task of putting together the Opening Day Booklet. PLEASE, reply to her s, and take out an ad in this year s book. All Opening Day Weekend festivities are funded by the proceeds from these ads. The more we make, the bigger the party can be! Every ad is important, so show your club spirit and say "HEY", in this year s book. Also, you will soon be receiving s from Susan Woron or a member of her team, requesting food donations. We at NERYC have the reputation of have the largest, and best spread of vittles of any clubs opening day. Let's keep up the good work, and volunteer to bring us some of your finest culinary creations on Opening Day. Well, that's enough for now. As always, please feel free to contact me if you have any questions, comments, or suggestions. Lady Gloria and I look forwards to seeing everyone at the club. V/C Russ Zehnacker FROM THE REAR April has arrived hopefully, you are off your backs from under the boat bottoms and working on the strip and wax process by now. Days are getting longer and warmer into the night, so the water temperature is on the rise. Time to get the boats in the water! March was a great month of events at the club, starting with an active birthday night turnout with lively dancing, rocking karaoke, and grand story telling about interesting sightings during member vacations down South. DJ Robert Cross even handed over the mic to our karaoke gods and goddesses, including some of our new members to celebrate St. Patty s Day. The next night was the Red Neck Yacht Club Murder Mystery with strange similarities to NERYC. We had a full house for the one night affair at the Red Neck Yacht Club, and it was extremely entertaining. Justine & Ron Roecker, as our star writer and producers, and rest of the talented cast did an outstanding job! I m hoping that Susan Andrew is no longer cross-eyed. If you have never been to one of our Murder Mystery events, you definitely need to add it to your calendar in Be sure to attend the More Guts than Talent night on August 13 another great way to showcase member talents and an event guaranteed to sell out. The Sail Seminar is coming up, and it sounds like we have a solid turnout. What an excellent way to fine tune your sailing skills at any level (beyond being rail meat). Great events present themselves for the month of April, with Birthday night kicking it off on April 8 th. We ll get the club grounds cleaned up on Workday, Saturday the 16 th, so please get involved in this event your help really does make a difference. Open House is the following day, so let s meet & greet new and potential members. We have an exciting way to end the month with our first official cruise of the season: The Shakedown Cruise at the Tidewater Marina in Havre De Grace. This is always an awesome opportunity to celebrate spring with your friends at NERYC, and to visit a wonderful town on the mouth of the Susquehanna River. Good food, refreshing drinks, the chance to rev up your engines, and shoot the breeze. I can t wait! Look for the event calendar in the Waterline and on the website: Well, that's it for now, keep an eye on your for notification of upcoming club events. If you have a suggestion for an event, or want to help with an event, just let me know is destined to be another fun year for boating and member entertainment! R/C Steve Hogan 3

11 FROM THE FLEET FROM THE PRINCESS Well, spring is officially here, and the boatyards are full of people getting ready for another great season. I hope we can all get our boats in the water in time for the NERYC Shakedown Cruise at the Tidewater Marina April 29 through May 1. We have a great season of cruising planned for the club. As previously mentioned, this year s Shakedown Cruise is planned for April 29 through May 1 st. We have made a change this year. We will have it at Tidewater Marina in Havre de Grace on the Chesapeake Bay instead of Chesapeake Inn. Slip fees are currently $1.50/ft. With its rich history, museums, restaurants, and shopping, Havre de Grace is a favorite destination for Chesapeake boaters. At your earliest convenience (and not later than April 10th), please Ginny Somers at GinnySomers@verizon.net to reserve your spot for the weekend. Please include your date of arrival, LOA, beam, draft, and electric requirements. If you plan to come by car, please advise us so that I can properly stock the Captain s Locker. Please contact me with any comments, suggestions, or questions about our 2011 Cruise Schedule. See you at the club! PS Don t forget to follow us on Facebook at April 29 th May 1 st May July 3 July 8-10 Shakedown Cruise Tidewater Marina, Havre de Grace Memorial Day Baltimore Yacht Club Independence Day Dock Party and NE Fireworks Mid-Summer Cruise Great Oak Landing Last weekend I attended my last sister yacht club ball representing NERYC after 5 years, I have mixed emotions about this...it s bittersweet to say the least because although I have loved spending time with all my fellow princesses at their home clubs, I am weary of giving up most of my weekends since middle school! After a while, there is just so much rubber chicken and Shirley Temples one can ingest since no other club puts on a event quite like ours! It has been an honor representing all of you around the Bay and I plan to finish my reign by attending as many other Chesapeake Bay club s openings with our 2011 officers this spring. I have made a decision not to compete this year in the Queen of the Bay pageant. I will be at Maryland YC for the festivities that weekend to help my sister princesses who choose to compete with their hair and make up and wherever else I am needed and of course participate in the Commodore-Princess Olympics with our commodore Joe Reynolds. Since I will be a senior in high school next year and investigating potential colleges on the weekends, I will not have the time to do the role justice though I am sure my predecessor will do a spectacular job filling my tiara! I want to thank everyone again, especially all of the officers that have given of their time and have escorted me to the many balls and openings over the years, especially my parents PC Lisa & Kenny Mack, who fittingly escorted me to my final ball at Eastern YC for a Tri-Ball honoring the commodores of the Veterans, Charlestown, & Key yacht clubs. 13 FROM MEMBERSHIP Please welcome new members Bill and Patricia Day from Chesapeake Isles and their 28 Sea Ray (Daydreamer). Look for them on C dock along with their friends the Newkirks, Manges, Keenans, and the Murrays. Also welcome Joe and Cheryl Cooper-Spaulding from Downingtown, Pa. You can find them on their 30 Catamaran (Tigger) at A-67; John and Judy Murray are also from Chesapeake Isles and love sailing on their 32 Catalina (Persuasion) which is on a mooring in Chesapeake Isles. They are also friends of the Manges, Keenans, and Days; Phillip and Joan Gravatt are from West Chester, Pa. They came to the Wassail Bowl with Ciminos in December; then came to our mystery dinner this month with application and check in hand. Phil is an avid water skier and would like to crew for our sailing group. He has an 18 Donzi that he trailers for skiing excursions. So welcome aboard to all of you! We hope to see you often at the club and on the water. April is finally here, which means the weather should be warmer, boats will be moving into their slips, eating on the patio is a definite possibility and birthday night will be on Friday, April 8 th. We have had great attendance at birthday night these past few months, so come join us and meet our new members. Our membership committee is looking for someone to take pictures of our new members, so we can put their pictures on the wall going into the burgee lounge and add them to our digital photo book in the main lounge. Please me if you are interested. Thanks to Dan Johnson, John Margan, Nigel Veater, April Conway, John Beardsley, and Bill Dallas for helping with the Cecil County Chamber of Commerce Business Expo. The turn-out was disappointing but we did have some good feedback about NERYC. The Cabin Fever Event at Moore s Methodist Church was very successful with a lot of interest in our Raingutter display. Hopefully we will see some of these people at our April Open House on Sunday the 17 th. Many were interested in the Jr.Sailing program and we also had adult requests for sailing lessons. Thanks to Joanne Veater, Bill Doyle, and John Margan for helping us on this event. Josie Dallas Membership Chair FROM BAR & RESTAURANT The weather is getting warmer and boats will begin to appear in the marina. That means that the NERYC restaurant will soon be open on Sundays again. The restaurant will be open from 4-8pm on Sunday, the 17 th, after the Open House. All prospective new members will be invited to stay for dinner, so plan to stay also and show the guests our outstanding NERYC hospitality. Half priced hamburgers will be available after the Open House. The next Sunday, April 24 th, is Easter, so the club will be closed. The restaurant will be open Sundays from 2:00-8:00 throughout the boating season, beginning Sunday May 1 st. I would like to thank Gloria Zehnacker and Susan Woron for sewing the new red and blue tablecloths for the Burgee Lounge. They are made out of a material that can be cleaned after each use, but doesn t need to be laundered like the white linen tablecloths. This will allow the restaurant to reduce out linen cost. As soon as more material is obtained, the remaining linen tablecloths in the lounge will be replaced. Mike Wagner, Bill and Josie Dallas, Dan Johnson, April Conway, and I recently manned the NERYC booth at an event sponsored by the Cecil County Chamber of Commerce with an eye to attract new members and outside events to the club. While the attendance at the event was less than we would have liked, we did talk to several people about the Sail Camp, membership, and the fact that we host outside events at the club. Word of mouth is our cheapest and most effective means of advertising. So the more exposure we get, the better. We continue to book outside events, particularly wedding receptions. March was a busy month for events and June and August are shaping up to be busy with outside events also. Don t forget, the restaurant opens on Sundays for the summer April 17 th. 15 FROM THE RACE COURSE This past Saturday the sail race committee hosted another of our popular pre-season race seminars. We had an excellent turn out of more than 70 adults and juniors. With at least half of the participants originating from our neighboring clubs and also some visitors from clubs as far afield the Delaware River and as NJ, the event provided great exposure for the our sailing programs and also the club.. Pre-Season Sail Race Seminar with Kristen Berry The seminar was led by Kristen Berry, a US Sailing certified instructor who coaches for J World, the US Navy and his own company Gale Force Sailing. The combination of Kristen s relaxed and entertaining style, together with his extensive racing and coaching experience made for a thoroughly enjoyable and worthwhile use of 6 hours on what was otherwise a cold, breezy, and definitely not yet spring Saturday. Kristen s training philosophy and ability to relate the difficult concepts to everyday activities ensured that all who attended, whether junior, senior, novice or advanced, were able to not only grasp the fundamentals, but also come away with a greater understanding of the racing rules, tactics and objectives. If you were not at this event you missed a truly great opportunity to learn, and to grow as a racer. Our first race of the Spring Series is scheduled for May 7th. This race start will be earlier than usual at 11am to accommodate the club s Opening Day Ceremony that afternoon - skipper s briefing at 10am. The 2011 Series Online Registration and Sailing Instructions are currently under review. Look out for an to let you know when they have been posted to the website Registrations for the Summer Learn to Sail Program are coming in fast and furious so if you have children, grandchildren or other family that are thinking of joining in the fun, avoid disappointment and be sure to register online at without delay! Any juniors in 6th grade and up interested in learning first aid, the club is hosting a Junior workshop, see the flyer in this issue for more details. PS. Spring Work Day is coming in April - We hope to see all junior sailors and their parents there to help with the commissioning of the sail camp boats and equipment. Remember, many hands make light work. Sharlene Wilkins On behalf of Rick Hanson Sail Program Chair 15

20 FROM MARKETING Please hand out Open House Invitations (Available at the club) NERYC participated in two promotional events in March, meeting folks who could be potential members and/or sail camp attendees. On March 12, we attended "Cabin Fever", an community fair hosted at Moore's Chapel Methodist Church in Elkton, where we set-up our "Rain Gutter" sailboat race game which delighted the crowd and attracted attention to our booth. Special thanks to Warren Adair, Bill Doyle, Josie Dallas, John Margan and Joanne Veater who greeted visitors at our booth. On March 15th, we attended the Cecil County Chamber of Commerce's Business Expo at Cecil College. Bill & Josie Dallas, John Margan, Nigel Veater, John Beardsley and April Conway all attended to represent the club at that event. (Big thanks to them!) At each and every event we attend, we continue to hear "Wow I had no idea about this" - so its important to continue to spread the word about NERYC by word of mouth. Please take any of the literature we have at the club and hand it out wherever possible. AND PLEASE encourage people, especially those with children, to come to the NERYC Open House on Sunday, April 17th from 2:00-4:00pm. We'll be giving facility tours, discussing available slips, showing kids and parents how we conduct sailing camp and our fleet of boats, serving restaurant samplers, and so forth to show potential members and campers all that NERYC has to offer. Mike Wagner Marketing Chair Anna M. Herman Anna M. Herman, 77, of Lancaster, passed away on March 22, 2011 at Lancaster General Hospital. Herman, of Lancaster. Anna was a dedicated 43 year member of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, Lancaster Flotilla. She was a life member of the North East River Yacht Club in Maryland.
