North East River Yacht Club At The Peake of the Chesapeake Social, Power or Sail, We Have Something For Everyone Member Newsletter October COMMODORE S REPORT This is the time of the year when boat owners are making preparations for storing their boats for the coming winter. For those members who have slips in our marina, wet storage is free for the winter and the only charge is for electric used. This is one of the many advantages of having a slip besides the convenience of floating docks for your boating pleasure during the season. Keep this in mind should you want to save some money this winter which could be used towards next year s slip rental and club dues. During past years, many members have expressed concern about the delay in receiving minutes of the monthly BOG meetings. I am pleased to announce the BOG voted to have minutes sent to the membership ten days following the monthly meeting. This change required permitting board members to approve minutes via prior to the ten day deadline. From now on, the minutes you receive will be timely, official, and approved by your board. I personally appreciate this change as I will no longer be sending out unofficial meeting summaries many of you reminded me of if I was tardy in sending. The positions and the recommendations of the nominating committee have been mailed to you by the Administrator. The membership will be selecting two members of the nominating committee for the next year. Potential members will be selected from the floor and the two selected will serve a two year term. Please attend the AGM as this will give you as a member insight as to what your board does on a monthly basis. The Commodore s Ball is scheduled for Saturday, November 5 th, Plan to attend this gala affair as we honor our in-coming Commodore and First Lady, Russ and Gloria Zehnacker. This is the only formal celebration we have all year and has always proven to be a party you don t want to miss. I would like to thank all members who supported the club this year. I am sure decisions made by the board were not always popular; however, I can assure you the actions taken were in the best interest of NERYC. First Lady Laura and I look forward to seeing everyone at the AGM and again November 5 th at the Ball. Commodore Joe Reynolds The Annual General Meeting for members in good standing of the North East River Yacht Club will be held in accordance with the NERYC By-Laws on October 2 nd, 2011 at 1400 hours. The Bridge Officers and Board of Governors will give updates on the status of their respective office and its administration this the past year.

FROM THE VICE FROM THE REAR WOW! October already! Where did the summer go? It seems like it was just yesterday that we were prepping the Nauti Nurse, for launch, and now it s time to begin thinking about when we will haul her out. Yes, as far as I m concerned, summers are WAY too short. We are still hoping to get out on the water a couple more times this year but those days are definitely numbered. October is also the time of year that our club meets to get reports from all the officers and committee chairs and elect our leaders for the upcoming year. I hope that all members participate in this most important event at our club! This month also plays host to the Frostbite Cruise, which is the last club cruise of the season. More on this event can be found elsewhere in this issue. Bob Efford, who heads up our Insurance Committee, is in the process of reviewing our current insurance policies prior to renewing for next year. If any member knows of an agent or company, that would like to submit quotes for Bob to consider, please contact me ASAP, so that I can pass that information on to Bob. Keeping it short this month, as always, please contact me with any questions, comments, or suggestions. See you on October 14 th for Birthday Night. V/C Russ Zehnacker We re nearing the end of another great boating season on the North East River. We re starting to see the preparations that go into storing our boats for the winter and prepping them for next season. There s still a few races left so don t miss the opportunity to support the Sail Race Program. The Annapolis Sailboat Show (October 6-10), followed by the Annapolis Powerboat Show (Oct 13-16). is an exciting way to see the latest boats and gear, and also provide a great opportunity to cruise to the quaint town of Annapolis and do some late season shopping. Our NERYC Halloween party is scheduled for Saturday, October 29 who will have the best costume? Will yoooooooooou? I can t wait to see you all. Be sure to mark your calendars for our upcoming NERYC Commodore s Ball on November 5 th to celebrate passing the baton from our 2011 Commodore Joe Reynolds to Commodore Elect Russ Zehnacker. Come and join us as we thank Joe for his year of leadership and welcome Russ to his new role for A big thank you to Lady Laura and Lady Gloria for their support over the last few years to Joe and Russ, respectively, and to our club. For New Year s Eve on Saturday, Dec. 31, we will be bringing in the New Year with a Wild West theme. I am sure that the creativity of our members will be unleashed don t miss it! Look for the event calendar in the Waterline and on the website: NERYC_Calendar.htm Keep an eye on your for notification of upcoming club events. If you have a suggestion for an event, or want to help with an event, just let me know. R/C Steve Hogan R/C Steve Hogan 3

FROM THE FLEET Our last cruise of the season will be our annual Frostbite Cruise to Sassafras Harbor Marina October Feel free to call ahead for reservations now. Ask for Sharon at (410) We have a great party planned in the clubhouse that starts at 5 pm on Saturday. Fleet Captain s locker will be stocked with lots of cold beer for the annual Chili cook-off, and a night guaranteed to be fun and entertaining. CHILI COOK-OFF!! I don t think anyone can beat my recipe, and my recipe is different every time so I don t think you will be able to coerce me into sharing the secret ingredients with you. Just joking. Just plan on enjoying it, and cooling your mouths off with a fully stocked Fleet Captain s Locker. You don t want to miss this memorable experience. The Labor Day Cruise to Kent Island Yacht Club cruise was enjoyed by all. The amenities of KIYC, the food brought by members, and beverages supplied by the Fleet Captain's Locker made the weekend a special event that no one will be quick to forget. A special thanks to Vice Commodore Russell Zehnaker and Lady Gloria Zehnacker for helping out and allowing us to use their campsite and canopy for the event. Please contact me with any comments, suggestions, or questions about our Cruise Schedule. See you at the club. PREDICTED LOG RACE The Predicted Log Race party was held in the Burgee Lounge on Saturday, September 24. The purpose of this party is to present the coveted Predicted Log Race Trophy to the winner of this race. The race is held each Labor Day as members return from the Labor Day Cruise. No matter how you are traveling by Boat, car, camper, bicycle, or foot power you can enter this race by predicting how long it will take you to return from the cruise location to your home port. There is one caveat though. Only a power boat can win this beautiful trophy. The party is always hosted by the previous year s winner, in this case O Sea One owned by Bob and Vivian Molloy. The 2011 winner of this lovely trophy was Line Dancer owned by Susan and David Andrews. The Andrews were only 28 minutes off their predicted time. Second place was Tally Ho owned by Ginny and Steve Somers who were over an hour off their estimate. A number or awards were presented to the attendees, such as the award for most stylish in the form of a toy convertible, which went to the Kay and Dwain Watkins. The restaurant staff prepared a tasty and generous spread of hors d oeuvres. All in attendance agreed it was a fun evening and for those of you who couldn t be with us, we missed you and hope you will join us next year. F/C Mark Coffman Sec Viv Molloy 5

FROM THE RACE COURSE Hard to comprehend but here we are in October, the final racing month of our season. It is a busy month with plenty of racing and sail related activities for everyone. After moving the race to a later date than in the past, then a postponement due to the recent flooding, the rescheduled GRF Bay Jam Race held this past weekend turned out to be another non event in terms of racing due to lack of wind. Although this was very unfortunate, the crowd who returned to Turners Creek for the party had a great time. The mood was festive right from the raft-up. I suspect that this may have had something to do with onboard coolers being cracked much earlier than usual that day. Thank you to all who made the effort to attend and let s wish them better luck for next year. The Annual General Meeting is coming up on Oct 2nd. I would like to encourage every member to attend. In particular, if you appreciate the sailing programs and would like ensure that your interests are well represented, then I urge you to please make the effort to be there and have your vote counted. Please look out for an coming soon regarding signups for the Inter Fleet Race which will be our last NERYC race of the season. All boats entered will compete as one fleet on a handicap basis. The winner of this event will be awarded the Charlestown Cup. Our end of season social will follow the race so please try and be there. Finally the Sail Awards Dinner on November 12th will close out the sail program events of Be sure you save the date. Skippers please invite your crew members and supporters, and juniors we want to see all of you there too. This year we will have live music so make plans to stay after the awards to celebrate. Updated Sail Program Fall Schedule Sat Oct 1 Sun Oct 2 Oct 6-10 Sat Oct 15 Sun Oct 16 Sat Oct 22 Sat Nov 12 HDGYC Fall Invitational NERYC 2pm US Sail Boat Show - Annapolis Fall Work Day Fall Race 4 & 5 - Meet 10am, Start 11am Inter Fleet Race & Charlestown Cup Sail Awards FROM THE PRINCESS This is my final article for the Waterline and although I won t miss my mother nagging me about writing my articles, I will miss having the opportunity to keep in touch with all of you as well as keeping you apprised of everything that has been going on in my life. I also will miss representing NERYC around the bay as your ambassador. It has been a fabulous five years, first as your junior princess and then the last three as the princess. I remember when I was eight years old and we first joined the club, I was fascinated by the older girls who wore the crown, first Bridget then Laverne. I was so honored to be asked to be in the junior court on opening day and dreamed of the day I would wear the tiara too. When my big sister Meghan was crowned princess in 2003, I used to dress up in her tiara, gowns and sash and take photographs of myself. I was able to become princess a lot sooner than I had anticipated when a few of the girls ahead of me opted not to take their reign. I have spent my all my high school years performing this role, have met many wonderful people all over the bay and have loved every moment of it. It saddens me that I will not get the opportunity to crown a successor now that Angel and her family will not be members next year. I encourage any of the young ladies of the club to consider becoming club princess as it is a fabulous opportunity and you ll have a blast hanging with all the other princesses around the bay and getting to share in the bond of sisterhood. I will miss you all but as live right next door and I am sure I will see you around the club. Hope to see you all at the ball. Rick Hanson Sail Program Chair 7

FROM MEMBERSHIP There is a slight chill in the air signifying that Fall has arrived, and too quickly I might add. We welcome new members David & Peggie Brzezowski of Honey Brook, Pa They have a 24 Bayliner.and they wanted to rent our last slip for the rest of this year, but due to the weather and debris in the water in their current location, they decided to wait. Look out for them at the slip assignment meeting after the AGM because they are keen to secure a slip for next year. Our photo contest has not had any entrants, So we will use last year s 2 nd place winner for the birthday/ anniversary e-cards in (Our members must have been too busy boating and having fun this season, or something.) The Membership Committee has worked hard this year and we have had fun in the process. If you have any interest in being on this committee please let me know so that I can pass your name on to the next membership chair. The more you get involved, the more people you meet and the more enjoyable membership in the club becomes. Even clean-up day can be fun and that is coming soon on Saturday, October15th. Hope to see you all there. Josie Dallas Membership Chair FROM THE RESTAURANT & BAR This is my last Restaurant Corner article. This Sunday, a new restaurant chair will be elected and I will become a lame duck BOG member. After four years on the BOG, two as Building and Grounds Chair, and the last two as Restaurant Chair, my term is coming to an end. As I look back on my years on the BOG, I can honestly say that I will miss it. There have been moments when I never would have believed I would ever say that, but my experience has been a positive one. I joined the BOG after being asked several times and declining. I had been a member for 3 years and was not happy that I wasn t being accepted by the longer established members. I dawned on me that if I wanted to make more friends, I should become involved more, volunteer for something. Working on a project would help me meet the other people who were also working on the project. The next thing I knew, George Braun had asked me to become B&G Chair, I was elected, and I was a BOG member. Getting involved with NERYC was one of the best decisions I ever made. I ve heard club members express the opinion that they d never serve on the Board because of all the politics. I ve always wondered what they meant by politics. Sure, we ve disagreed, but isn t that what the BOG is supposed to do? A group of people, who have the best interest of the club at heart, meet, discuss options, debate the options, and arrive at a course of action in the best interest of the club? The greatest strength NERYC has is its members. I encourage everybody to get involved. Lend as much of your experience and expertise to the club as your situation allows. While I will no longer get to sit in one of the big chairs at the table, I will still be around the club as a worker bee. See you at the club, John Beardsley Restaurant Chair 9
