1 North East River Yacht Club At The Peake of the Chesapeake Social, Power or Sail, We Have Something For Everyone Member Newsletter May COMMODORE S REPORT One of the great things about our club is the way our members pitch in and volunteer their time to benefit the club. Such was the case on three separate occasions this past month. On April 13 th and 14 th, our club was invited to set up a display at the Eastern Mountain Sports store in Christiana. In return for setting up and manning the display, club members were offered a 20% discount on items purchased those two days. Claudia Ferguson and members from her Membership and Marketing team took on the task and I am happy to say the table was manned for the entire two days, helping to spread the word about our club. On Saturday the 21 st, members gathered at the club for our annual Spring Work day to help get the facilities ready for the coming season. Then, on Sunday, many of those same members, along with several others, returned to the club to help host our annual Open House to showcase our club and hopefully recruit some new members and slip holders. I would like to thank all of you for taking the time out of your bust schedules to help out with these events. It just goes to prove once again that the North East River Yacht Club has the BEST members on the Bay! Since the beginning of the new year, your Officers and Board Members have been working hard to contain costs and identify new sources of revenue to keep our club operational. While the task continues, I assure you that we have made great strides in both areas. On Sunday, June 3rd, I plan to hold my third Ask the Commodore meeting. This meeting will also detail our financial outlook and plans for the remainder of the year. I urge you to mark your calendars now, and take the time to attend this very important meeting. Remember, this is your club, it can only be as strong and viable as you make it. The officers and BOG are your representatives and can only operate effectively with your input. On May 5 th, we officially open the boating season here at NERYC. As always, a full weekend of activities is planned starting with our annual Margaritaville Party on Friday evening. Come on down and enjoy festive food, music and great company with your fellow members, and while you re at it, bring along a couple of your not yacht club friends so they can see what the hoopla is all about! More information on all opening weekend events can be found elsewhere in this issue of the Waterline. May is also the month that most other clubs on the Bay celebrate their openings so don t be surprised to see your clubs officers decked out in their Summer Whites as they head off to our sister clubs to offer support and foster reciprocal agreements, Remember, NONE of our clubs officers are reimbursed in any way for their attendance at these functions. They do so as a responsibility of their office, and to help spread the word about NERYC up and down the bay. That s it for now, get out there and enjoy the Bay! I look forwards to seeing you at the club throughout the season. As always, please contact me with any questions, comments or suggestions Commodore Russ Zehnacker.

5 FROM THE VICE Many thanks to the mooring ball team of Frank Wile, Gill Louw, Barry Lotter, Dave Brzezowski, and Bob Brechter. Also, to John Sergeant as he continues to nurse our mooring barge motor to good health as it ages like the rest of us. In addition, I would like to thank Charles Paris for doing an outstanding job with monitoring and arranging for critical upgrades to our NERYC club property and systems. And thanks to those who help Charles, which helps us keep costs down for NERYC. From May 4 th -6 th, join us as at our 2012 NERYC Opening Day Weekend. Kick off the weekend at our Margaritaville party at 6 pm on Friday, May 4 th. DJ Kevin is booked and ready to spin some tunes and get you into party mode. On Saturday, May 5 th, our Opening Day starts with a Sail Race at 11 AM, and the preceremony appetizers and cocktails will begin at 2:30 pm. NERYC member, Tom Williams, will be playing his guitar and I heard he might try Blue Bayou. The official Opening Day Ceremony will be held at 4 pm. The Kentucky Derby party starts at 5 pm. Ladies - don t forget your Derby Hats. And be sure to buy raffle tickets for our two huge Baskets of Cheer, which will be raffled off on Opening Day. For Opening Day, thank you to those who plan to donate appetizers and desserts for our members and visitors to enjoy. Suzanne Braun is doing a great job compiling our Opening Day Booklet and organizing the Cheer baskets. Remember when you buy an ad for the booklet, the proceeds are used to offset the costs of our Opening Day festivities. See you all then. V/C Steve Hogan FROM THE FLEET Hopefully by this time boats are in the water and you are ready to enjoy all the club cruises. NERYC members had a great time on the Shakedown Cruise to Tidewater Marina in HD Grace this past weekend. A big thank you to Bruce and Barbi Taylor for hosting a memorable gathering at your fabulous home overlooking the Susquehanna and across the Bay. The food, the view and the company were all amazing. Our next adventure is set for Memorial Day weekend, May 26 28th, when we will cruise down to the Baltimore Inner Harbor West Marina. For your convenience, I have prepared a Fleet Captain s Cruise Schedule booklet containing all the details of our summer cruises. The booklet can be found on the easel as you enter the Club via the front door. You can also find the full cruise schedule, venue information and sign up for cruises online via the website: If you don t have a boat, please consider joining the cruises by land yacht. Information on overnight accommodations, at each location, is in the cruise booklet. There are plenty of activities and social functions to enjoy with or without a boat. If you have never been on a club cruise, or if you have any questions or need encouragement to join us, please contact me. Tally Ho! 7 FROM MEMBERSHIP Neryc was invited to exhibit at Club Days at Eastern Mountain Sports in Christiana on the 13 th and 14 th of April. It was a win-win situation. We got to tell customers about NERYC and at the same time NERYC members could receive 20 to 25% off their merchandise. Thanks to the members who helped. We will also exhibit at the Blue Rocks Game in Wilmington on Wednesday, May 9 th. Let me know if you would like to come out and help. Our annual Open House was held on April 22 nd from 2-4pm. Although it was a rainy day, we had a good turn out. As a result of our efforts and the initiation fee waiver incentive, I am pleased to let you all know we received 7 new member applications this past week. Special thanks to the Marketing and Membership committees, who worked so diligent behind the scenes to get the word out through adverts in various magazines, periodicals, handout materials and most recently, participation in exhibits and also, as you have probably noticed, the road signs posted around the area advertising our slips and Open House. My thanks also to all those members who attended on the day and assisted in showcasing all the club has to offer. You all contributed to making this day a success. Remember, if you see an unfamiliar face around the club, please introduce yourselves and make them feel welcome. Claudia Ferguson Membership Chair 7

9 FROM THE RACE COURSE The first race of the season is upon us. This Saturday NERYC sail race fleet will take to the river to test their new sails, fresh bottom paint and rusty crews against each other. It should be a spectacle the entire club wants to come and watch as you never know who might win or take a wrong turn. The racing will be tight this year as we modified the fleets and narrowed the starts down to 2. The handicap ratings will be close and the competition tough. I wish the fleet the best this weekend as I cannot make opening day due to Rosalita competing in the NOOD s in Annapolis (NOOD stands for National Offshore One Design and is a regatta where boats race against other boats of the exact same design). The Junior program is ramping up with registrations coming in fast. Thus far we are ahead of last year and some weeks are close to full, so get your kids registered. Due to some wonderful donations by club members we have been able to purchase several new Optimists, Lasers and a chase boat. These additions will allow the program to continue its growth and sustainability. Sharlene has been busy readying the program for the summer and hiring our US Sailing certified instructors. Mike has been procuring equipment and repairing boats so the fleet so it is ready to go. In addition, we will again be hosting a sold out US Sailing instructor certification course at the club over Memorial day weekend. I wish the best to all on opening day weekend. Good luck racers and don t bump into anyone.
