North East River Yacht Club At The Peake of the Chesapeake Social, Power or Sail, We Have Something For Everyone Member Newsletter November Commodore s Report Wow, where has the time gone? After four years of contributing to this news letter, I am sad to say this is my last article. There have been times over the last few years that it seemed as if I had just written my previous month s article and the deadline for the upcoming month was again looming over my head. I have sat in front of my computer with a blank open Word document on many occasions wondering what thoughts I wanted to impart this time that would not bore all of you and may possibly hold your interest for a few moments. Even when my mind was blank and I sat here in the wee hours of the morning, I have always managed to sum up something to say when my fingers hit the keyboard. Serving on the board of governors for the last 6 years has been both a challenge and an enormous pleasure. I have had the opportunity to work with many dedicated and talented people and enjoyed learning the many roles and duties that each office I held entailed. There are times when I left the board room with my tongue nearly bitten in half and ready to explode and times that we came down to the burgee lounge together, laughing and sharing a drink with each other and those dedicated spouses who were there awaiting the end of yet another long and sometimes arduous meeting. Despite the sometimes overwhelming and daunting tasks that needed to be accomplished from month to month, overall I have truly enjoyed serving on this board and especially serving as your commodore this past year. I have loved traveling to the other CBYCA clubs for opening day ceremonies and Commodore s balls, escorting our club s princesses and representing the best club on the bay. There have been three highlights this past year during my term as commodore. The first of these was in April when I had had the pleasure of hosting all of the Chesapeake Bay clubs at our clubhouse this past spring for the quarterly delegates meeting and annual distribution of the roster book. The second was on Opening Day when I was also honored to accept the American flag that flew over Aaron Dietrich s unit in Iraq that he presented to us during the ceremony just days after he returned from a year s tour of duty. The third was being the commodore for our club s first Fleet Pass & Review in July; my thanks to Doug Cain for organizing this event and the Sergeants for offering Angelica as the reviewing vessel and official officer s party boat. I d like to end this article by recognizing those people who made significant contributions to the club over the last few years that have assisted me to serve you better. Bill Dallas & David Ferguson (Club Administrators) Bill had some pretty big shoes to fill after David left the board after 6 years of tireless service and has done so without missing a beat thanks to David mentoring to assure a seamless transition. John Landan & Steve Dougherty (Bar & Restaurant) Both of these gentlemen have taking our flailing R& B operation and turned it around and brought us into the black, with a great menu, fantastic staff and hours of dedicated service. Charles Paris, Rick Hanson, Bill Roos, Barbi & Bruce Taylor (Sail Race) All of these gentleman& lady, have given countless hours to make our program the premier racing program on the upper bay. Through their dedication and work with the upper bay racing program, we have also added a new class of winter laser sailors that will begin their first season with us in November which have also added a boost to our membership. Cliff Shaw & John Beardsley (Buildings & Grounds) This is a thankless position that Cliff held on to for 2 terms and John stepped into this year I am sure unaware of all the many hours he d be asked to put it keeping our clubhouse, rental properties and landscaping looking it s best for our members and guests. These gentlemen have spearheaded workdays twice a year in addition to their weekly duties of keeping our 79 year old facilities working with meager funds but with a surplus of willing volunteers. Frank Wile & Nigel Veater (Dock masters Extraordinaire) We have a beautiful state of the art floating marina thanks to the dedication and expertise of these 2 fantastic gentlemen. They have worked along with the dock team to make this dream a reality for us and have garnered the many volunteers necessary to keep our faltering docks in place until the legal battles were fought and won enabling us to have the docks you enjoy today. Their endless work days thru the late winter months into the late fall to not only maintain our crumbling docks but build our new boardwalks, wave fence, floating docks etc. and have had many members rally around them building not just docks but a cohesive team spirit as well. Cont.

Judy Lemasters, Sharon Allaband, Heather Higdon, Vanderlyn Downing and Regina Leigh (Membership Chairs) These incredible ladies have represented NERYC at the many boat shows and water festivals, speaking with potential members and mentoring new members by inviting them to club events, introducing them to other members, sending cards on their birthdays and anniversaries and sending well wishes in times of illness and sorrow. Rocco D Armiento (Treasurer) since taking on the job of treasurer, he has kept all of us in line, paid off our line of credit and invested our accounts receivable and made strategic decisions in allocating our resources that have saved us money and kept us in the black. I personally want to thank him and Judy for their friendship and support these last 6 years. Jan Sergeant, Frank Fulham & Darlene Hamlin (Finance Chairs) each of them has given freely of their time and sharp fiscal minds to keep our books balanced and budgets in check and help forecast our financial futures and assist with long range planning for the club. Working with the ever growing spreadsheets and many line items is enough to make the best of us lose our minds but each of them has done a spectacular job and which is seldom acknowledged. Ginny Somers (Secretary/former Finance Chair) - she has been a consummate professional in both of the positions she has served over the last 3 years. I have enjoyed visiting other clubs with her and look forward to another great year on the board with her as well.. PC Tom Herman (Protocol Chair) - Tom was commodore in 1980 and I don t think he s missed a board meeting since 1976! He has been an invaluable source of history and has often helped to bridge the gap for the new officers by gently pulling each of us aside at times and offering advice and encouragement. Sharlene Wilkins & Suzanne Braun (Waterline Editors, Yahoo groups etc.) Both Suzanne and Sharlene have spent innumerable hours editing the Waterline, decorating the clubhouse for events, chairing and assisting at events, organizing cruises, working on the docks and clubhouse on workdays, and so on and so on In addition, Suzanne has maintained and moderated the NERYC yahoo group , while Sharlene has headed up the club website and marketing, the Invitational Sail Race, served on the sail race committee for 2008, and will be taking over the chair in I have always been able to call on both of these women, at a moments notice for help & advise and they have always eagerly accepted any task asked of them. Renee Landan (Supply Officer/Floral Designer/Pastry Chef) Thankfully Renee relieved me of the ship s store 2 years ago that I assumed when I was secretary and never found a replacement through my first 2 years on the bridge.she has turned the store around and has actually made a profit for the club while adding new merchandise and displaying it every month at birthday night for the members. She has decorated the club and handled all floral arrangements, tablescapes, bouquets, and buttoniers for the last 4 years of Commodore s balls and opening day ceremonies. As wife of the R& B chair she also stepped in on several occasions to assist with cooking and baking in the kitchen during our various chefs absences over the years. Without Renee, we would not have the spectacular turnout of visiting club officers all vying for the opportunity to represent their clubs at the most fabulously decorated ball on the Bay! Russ Zehnacker (Parliamentarian, FC Elect) He has filled a void that has been sorely needed in recent years as parliamentary advisor and expert. I would like to personally thank Russ for standing and sitting besides me, checking and rechecking our bylaws & Robert s Rules and helping both our general membership meetings and board meetings run smoothly. I hope that he will continue to assist our future commodores with his expert knowledge of parliamentary procedure and wish him the best of luck as he starts his rise through the chairs as fleet captain this year. Doug Cain (Legal Advisor) He has given so much of his time and expertise that none of us could ever begin to repay his advice has been sound and his attitude beyond compare. I want to personally thank Doug for chairing NERYC s first Fleet Pass and Review/Party this year and hosting the Manly Men s Lo beers the last 2 years and the Frank Day dock party last year. I look forward to many more pleasant times with him outside of the board rooms and courtrooms, doing what we all do best here, enjoying our wonderful waterfront and boats and partying our patooties off! Pat Shaw (Safety Officer)- I would like to personally thank Pat for accepting this position and taking the initiative to train both our members and staff in CPR and the use of the AED and championing the fundraising efforts to purchase the AED and maintain it. Past Commodores Bill Roos, Bill Cohee, David Andrews, George Braun & Brenda Carlson All of phenomenal people have helped prepare me for this year, their leadership and friendship have been unwavering and I am proud to join their ranks as a past commodore. John Sergeant (Chaplain & Savior) John has offered his reflections for innumerable club events, boat christenings, members marriages and any other event that has called for a man of the cloth. He accepted the role as my Master of Ceremonies for the Out of Africa themed Commodore s ball for PC Brenda Carlson and he personally rescued me from a certain watery death at sea while diving in South Africa a few years ago when he could have left me to the sharks! I am proud to call him Papa and along with sweet wife Beebe, I have a second set of parents (that are a whole lot more fun to party with than my first set!) Lynn Fowler (Roster chair) Lynn has kept our roster current & up to date and provided electronic copies to the office, Waterline editor, yahoo groups chair and biannual updates to the entire membership. She is always willing to go through her list and pull up specific searches as needed to isolate groups of membership for specific purposes for various club functions. Past & Present First Ladies & Gentleman and current spouses of the board- there have been many of you during my last 6 years: Lyla, Sandy, Susan, Suzanne, Carl, Kenny, Lynn, Linda, Laura, Susan, Josie, Joanne & Judy all of you have added your mark on the club and continue to work behind the scenes with little acknowledgement of all the hard work you did and continue to do for the club even after your mates are out of office; the many balls, cruises, work days opening days and parties would have never been the successes they were without all of your hard work, dedication and commitment. I would like to recognize all of you for enabling myself and your mates to continue to put on first class affairs. Commodore Elect Jon Fowler, VC Elect Roger Hughes, RC Elect Joe Reynolds my boys I feel like a mother whose sons are moving out for the first time but in reverse! You have all worked with me this past year to make this the best board of governors I have Cont. 2

3 had the privilege to be part of these past 6 years. Their cooperation, dedication, enthusiasm and ingenuity have all contributed to infusing NERYC with new lifeblood and it has been my honor to serve along with all of them. My sincerest best wishes to each of them as they continue to move ahead through the ranks of this club and I pledge my support in whatever way I can be of service to them and enable each of them to have another banner year as officers in this club. Princess Kelly - You have represented our club with grace and charm these past 2 years and it has been my greatest pleasure to spend so much time with you and your family over the last 6 years. I know that this has been the most difficult year of your young life and I want you to know that I will always be here for you in whatever capacity you need me. I loved your mother as a sister and think of you and Bryan as family and want to be a shoulder for you to lean on whenever you need a hug, advice or just some time away from the boys in your house. Princess Gabriella you have taken to this role like a moth to a flame, you were born for it so to speak and I know that you will take over where your sister Meghan, Laverne, Samantha, and Kelly left off by representing NERYC as our ambassador around the bay. I have had a lot of fun escorting you to balls and openings these past 2 years and look forward to taking you to more in the upcoming year. You have had a great opportunity as Jr. Princess and I know you are ready. You continue to make your presence known here at the club by your active participation in club events and your service to the membership by helping with work days, staff holiday parties and assistant photographer. Keep up the good work; I am proud to be your mother. Lord Kenny (First Maney) You have supported me throughout these last 6 years on the ball by being my rock and my muscle when I needed you to haul coolers full of wine, beer and soda, decorations up and down the basement stairs, hang stars, trim trees, make planters, and general cleaning around the club without ever batting an eye. You have encouraged, loved and respected me, often with little of that back from me. I look forward to taking a back seat to you next year when you take on management of the bar & restaurant operation. We have been a great team along with Gabi and Meghan and I love you for being there for all of us. To all of my friends and members You are all very special to me, your friendships and support during the last 6 years has kept me going and added so much to my life there has never been a group of people that I have had the pleasure of knowing and working with anywhere else that I have been able to feel so comfortable with and have such a great time with as well. You have all given your all and then continued to dig deeper. There is no place else on this earth I d rather be, and no other people in the world I would rather spend time with. Thank you for allowing me to serve you as your commodore. Soon to be IPC. Commodore Lisa Mack FROM THE VICE This is my last article as Vice Commodore which also officially signifies an end of my transitional years as being somewhat sheltered from the slings and arrows aimed in the direction of the Commodore. I would like to thank everyone who came out and helped at the annual Fall Weekend clean-up. A much needed touch-up painting and general sprucing up that took place inside has made a dramatic improvement in our Club house. The ladies managed to once again triumph over the men when it came time to clean restrooms. The ladies room is clean and immaculate, whereas the men s room well, it will be cleaned sometime in the future. As usual there was a small contingent of hardy souls working outside doing windows, raking leaves wiping down the siding etc. A small floating dock was also assembled by our loyal contingent of dock workers at minimal cost thanks to Rocco D Armiento finding free floatation material. Dock master Nigel Veater, with Frank, Steve, Dave, Mac, George, Rick, etc., put this together and had it floating by lunch time. Meanwhile, we had the incoming Dock master, Steve Hogan, welding the broken metal patio furniture all morning; he thusly missed out on learning Nigel s secrets of enslaving membership to work on the docks. We know the boating season is officially over when; Susan and David Andrews take down the purple martin birdhouse, the Commodore s Ball happens, dock water gets shut off and we again get reminded of the poor insulating quality of fiberglass when staying overnight on the boat. Hope everyone got out on the water as often as they liked this year. Having fun is what it is all about. I know that Lynn and I had a good time cruising with friends this year and we hope to see everybody here next year for more exciting activities to make your summer enjoyable. Commodore Elect Jon - (Hey, is that a bulls eye on my ass?) FROM THE REAR Steve Dougherty outdid himself with a Halloween Party that everyone attending will remember for many years. The food was great and the costumes were outstanding. Thank you Steve for a great party and milking a budget to allow for the live band at the event. Another job well done by the Food and Beverage Team. V/C Jon Fowler My last function as Rear Commodore is planning and hosting the Ball to Honor Commodore Elect Jon Fowler and his Lady Lynn. I want to thank my Lady Linda and her team for spending many hours in planning, preparing décor and flowers, creating and sending out invitations for the event. This is a huge undertaking that the team has handled flawlessly. We hope that you will all come out and enjoy the evening we have planned for you.

4 The Commodore s Ball this year will be held on November 1 st starting at 18:00 Hours. As in the past, the food and beverage staff will be out to impress. Event tickets at $75 p.p. including drinks and gratuity (the same price as last year and a lower price than any other Commodore s Ball on the Bay) are definitely a bargain. After dinner and the changing of the guard ceremonies, we will be entertained by the music of Alton Street. I hope to see you all at this, our most elaborate event of the year. Soon to be your new V/C. FROM THE FLEET Thank you to all NERYC cruisers for making this year a very successful and fun season. We cruised to several of our favorite locations and added new destinations for all to expand our log books. R/C Roger Hughes The Frostbite Cruise ended out season with the famous Chili Cookoff where we had eighteen varieties of chili entered for judging. We were lucky enough to have gourmet chef on board Bad Boy who agreed to be our judge. The winner was our Assistant Fleet Captain, Steve Hogan, followed closely by Nigel Veater who I hear may be submitting a protest after he was mistakenly named as winning. Nigel is beginning to develop a recipe for next year to walk away with first place. The Two J s presented their southerly loop from the Great Lakes to Ft. Pierce, FL ending up the evenings activities. I encourage everyone to give the support shown me to next years Fleet Captain, Russ Zehnacker and his wife, Gloria. Russ has already been busy setting up his schedule including a March 7 th Dinner Cruise on the Lantern Queen. This was a very successful event last year and book early to reserve your place. For the final time before I move on to R/C, thank you to my Assistant Fleet Captain Steve Hogan, his wife Karen, and my First Lady Laura for making this a fun cruising season. F/C Joe Reynolds FROM THE DOCKS This will really be my last Waterline article as your dock master as I prepare to turn over the shed keys and parking space to Steve Hogan on November 1st. Its not too late to sign up for in-water storage - $750 for November until March 31 st. This is a great deal. Also please note that all slip holders not staying at the club for the winter storage will need to vacate their slip by November 16 th. Water supply to the marina will be shut off around Nov. 1 st. Finally, as the season ends please remember to remove all personal property from the docks and grounds. Items not removed by the end of November, will be assumed to have been abandoned and will be disposed of or appropriated by the club. Reminder: Slip and mooring agreements, insurance confirmation and payments are due to be returned to the club by October 31st. The slip/mooring rates and agreements are available on the website. One last time, thank you all. Nigel Veater - Dock Master FROM ENTERTAINMENT What an entertaining year this has been! We had two record breaking auctions that not only made money for the club, but were also a whole lot of fun. The superb entertainment skills provided by Bob Cross, Larry Buck and Ric Taylor ensured that we always had a huge turn-out on Birthday nights. Special occasion greeting cards and invitations to new members also helped to encourage participation in the various activities during the year. Don t forget that next birthday night is November 6 th. Be sure to come out and celebrate with your friends and the many new members that our club continues to attract. Regina and I were also tasked to procure the band for the Commodore's Ball on November 1st. We are excited to present you with the musical talents of Alton Street. This band has years of experience, an amazing variety, and are sure to keep you on the dance floor till late. Finally my last duty as entertainment chair this year will be as master of ceremonies for the Ball. I consider this a great honor and a privilege, and I am looking forward to celebrating this, the 79th changing of the watch with you all. Thank you for supporting our wonderful club. Robert E. Leigh

7 FROM THE RACE COURSE October brought us one more CBYRA Region 1 race before most of us called it a season. Thirteen NERYC sailboats and crews traveled out to the Bay to compete in the HDGYC John Heffner Memorial Fall Regatta. A competitive day of sailing was had by all, followed by dinner, the awards and music by Rob Fahey. No matter where we have gone this season, racing or cruising, you can always count on the sailors to have a good time. Taking home the coveted one-of-a-kind, handmade duck decoy trophies for their efforts were; Hey-Rey-Knot, Joe Reynolds (2 nd Cruising class); Windsprint, Greg Eckman (2 nd Spin A class); Born 2 Run, Rick Hanson (1 st Spin B class) Southern Cross, Bill Roos (1 st Non-Spin class); and N Titled2, Bruce and Barbi Taylor (2 nd Non-Spin class). Congratulations to all. Results at: As most of us were busy getting our boats ready for winter storage, two boats representing NERYC were entered in last weekend s Baltimore Harbor Leukemia Cup - First Love and Cinnamon Girl (Cinnamon Girl however, chose not to compete given the forecast weather conditions). This challenging charity race had 73 boats entered, of which 50 started and only 30 finished. The course was 25.7 miles for all classes except PHRF N who had a shorter 20 mile course. The race started just above the Bay Bridge and finished in the Baltimore Inner Harbor. At the start the wind was a steady knots out of the SE building to 35 knots. In the latter half of the race as the low pressure system pushed through, conditions intensified with winds increasing to 40 with 50 knot gusts, waves of 4-6 feet and driving rain, As a result of the wild weather, one boat was dismasted, many blew out sails and there were also rumors of MOB incidences. Fortunately no one was injured. We are pleased to report that First Love crewed by Gill Louw, Sharlene Wilkins and Barry and Jenn Lotter finished in 4 hours without incurring any damage, and placed fourth in class. Congratulations! Results at: So now it s November and as we prepare to hand over the reins to Sharlene Wilkins, we wish to thank our committee, Rick and Sue Hanson - Junior Sailing, Sharlene Wilkins and Gill Louw - Invitational Race Chairs, Greg Eckman - Thursday night racing, Robert and Regina Leigh - Sail Fleet support and Race Official - Justine Roecker, plus Bill Roos - Pursuit Race Chair, for all of their hard work in maintaining the high quality of the NERYC sail racing program. Good teamwork divides the task and doubles the success. Similarly it will be the spirit and teamwork as exemplified on each race boat, whether on or off the course: coordinating events, putting up tents, emptying the keg, helping each other, teaching new sailors, etc., that we will be celebrating at our annual Awards Dinner on November, 22 nd. All skippers, crew, family, friends and members are invited to attend. Come and share the success of each team that participated in 2008 as well as congratulate the 2008 series winners. As announced at the annual meeting, we are initiating a new perpetual trophy this season, The Trish Whittington Corinthian Spirit Award. This prestigious award in memory of Trish will honor the person who has most exemplified the Corinthian Spirit in So what is Corinthian Spirit? We have compiled the more common definitions and will use these as the criteria for the award: displays the highest standard of sportsmanship (not how you win but how you play) exemplifies a dedication to the sport of sailing, encourages and develops the Corinthian spirit of yachting supports the sport of sailing by providing opportunities for non boat owners to go sailing promotes amateur sailing and competition adheres to a seaman s code of honesty, courtesy and consideration towards the other boats and their crew Skippers and crew, please send in your nominations for this year s award recipient to Barbi Taylor, along with a brief description on why this person exemplifies the Corinthian Spirit. btaylor@ecbm,com. We wish to thank the membership of NERYC for the opportunity to serve the club as your Race Committee Co-Chairs and extend our best wishes to the new 2009 Board of Governors. The sailing season was a great success, not because of us, but because of YOU, the sailors, crews and members of NERYC! We can not direct the wind, but we can adjust the sails. 8 8 FROM JUNIOR SAILING Although the kids are not out sailing in front of NERYC this fall it does not mean the program has been sitting idle. If you were at the club this past weekend you would have seen a dozen or so of NERYC s finest carpenters and design engineers building a floating dock for the program. Maybe build is not the right term but it sort of evolved. Thanks a million guys!!! The dock will start getting its first group of sailors on it this weekend as the Northern Chesapeake Laser Fleet starts their winter sailing season with us. If you haven t heard, NERYC will be new the home to this well established racing fleet, and we are very excited to have them joining us. The fleet consists of about 15 hardy cold weather sailors who race every Sunday from now until the end of March. If you get down to the club this winter on a cold Sunday afternoon make sure you check out the racing action. If you are of the adventurous type and want to give it a try just me know and we will get you out on the water. The Junior program has also been building it s fleet of boats. We have had a couple of great boat donations from club members and have located 3 slightly used first class sunfishes for the fleet. We are still in need of good boats. Our goal is to have at least 2or 3 more first class sunfishes, 4 race ready lasers and 2 more Optis by spring. We hope to fund our fleet through the efforts of the sail race program, with fundraising, and by club member donations of boats or cash. We have also submitted a business plan to the board that includes a small chunk of capital to invest in the fleet. We plan on expanding the junior program by running at least 6 camps next summer and in order to make it successful, we will need more good boats. The program, which has always been self funding, will need a small influx of capital to get our fleet up to par. Also on the broader Junior Sailing front, Kyle Hanson has been sailing hard while studying down at Old Dominion University in Virginia. Kyle has started in 3 regattas as crew and together with his skipper have taken 2-3 rd places and 1-2 nd place. Not a bad start for a college freshman that hails from NERYC. Way to go Kyle! Please continue to support our kids and the Junior Sailing Program as it continues to grow and benefit the future of our club. All Racers, Crew, Supporters & Members are invited to join the celebrations. Thanks. 9 9 FROM MEMBERSHIP As the season and leaves change, so do the ranks at NERYC. Congratulations to everyone, whether moving up or coming on board in a new position. To quote the name of my power boat, No Regrets. I liken the past two months to the role of an understudy in a Broadway show. From opening night to the final curtain, every day has brought excitement, growth and a sense of achievement. During my short time in the spotlight, so to speak, I have signed up eight full members, seven winter members and have enjoyed each encounter. This is far from farewell; however, as although my torch is extinguished, I will not be leaving the island. In closing I provide you with this thought. There comes a point in your life when you realize who matters, who never did, who won't anymore, and who always will. So don't worry about people from your past. There's a reason they didn't make it to your future. Be kinder than necessary because everyone you meet is fighting their own battle of some kind. New Membership Promotion Sign up two (2) new Full Members between now and December 31, 2008 and win a NERYC restaurant credit for $525. All members in good standing are eligible to participate. Limit 1 award per membership. Award does not cover tax and gratuity. The 2 new Full memberships must first pay the initiation fee and prorated dues before the restaurant credit is authorized. Credit for new memberships must be verified by the Membership Chair. Happy Autumn. Regina Leigh Membership Chair An excellent way to bring guests is to invite them to our many social activities.
