And Happy New Year For those of you who grew up in the New York City area, there was a weatherman on Channel 9 WOR TV, his name was Lloyd Lyndsay Young. And the lovable Lloyd would request his weather viewers to send letters into the TV station requesting an on-air big time announcement to your home town. He would read these shout outs on the 10 pm news weather segment by announcing the location. With a big smile, he d bend down a little, cup his hand to the side of his mouth, lean back, then jump forward and let it rip. Helloooooooooooooooooooooo..Hoboken, New Jersey So the next time you come down to the club this year, give a big shout out as you enter the parking lot, or enter the club house, or the Burgee Lounge, or on the docks, just shout it out loud. I hope everyone had a great time with family and friends over the Holidays. December was a great time at the club. First, I would like to thank everyone that both attended and donated at the Wassail Bowl Holiday event. This year we invited donations for the Northern Chesapeake Sheltie Rescue. We raised over $400 hundred dollars between in-person and on-line donations. Thank you, thank you, thank you for your donations. Second, if you missed coming to the club in December, then you really missed out. Birthday night at the club was one of the best birthday night/ugly Sweater bashes ever. Great food prepared by Chef Joe and fancy drink specials from behind the bar in the Burgee Lounge by Kim and Lauren. I think we may have a new annual tradition at the club and I envision the ugly sweater challenge to get even uglier next year, in a good way. And to keep the good times rolling. Rear Commodore, Dave Brzezowski, has organized some fun Member Events all winter long. Next up in January, the NERYC New Year s Party, Rain Gutter Regatta/Silent Auction and Themed Dinners. Visit the NERYC website or look for announcements or postings on the NERYC Facebook page. On the club enhancement front, Building and Grounds has completed the Capital Fund Campaign plumbing project in the basement. Next up, look for Winter Workdays, we need to get some inside work done at the club. The Board of Governors is looking forward to 2019 and doing the business of the club. We enter this year with a goal to focus on the Club s Finances to ensure our sustainability, betterment of the club and enhance the member experience. In doing so, we are

continuing to put controls in place for revenue and expenses and ask all members to make sure we receive timely payments for member renewals, slip fees and Capital Fund contributions.

Building on the success of the club means we need Volunteers is just beginning, and we already need to think about future committee and board members. Call for Action Seeking a Fleet Captain and Building and Grounds Chair. Come join us every third Friday of the month; Board meetings are open to the membership. Winter at the club is a great time to enjoy member events, Thursday, Friday or Saturday dinners or Sunday brunch in the Restaurant and Burgee Lounge and beautiful winter time sunsets. 7 CONGRATULATIONS AND THANK YOU TO THESE OUTSTANDING MEMBERS! Cindy Hoffman, The Capt. Alan Veater Humanitarian Award This award honors an individual who has provided significant volunteer commitment to enrich the community through education, assistance to those in need, or environmental efforts. This year s winner of the Humanitarian Award was nominated by four people. Family, friends, and community are the center of Cindy Hoffman's interest and dedication. In service to Cecil County, Cindy served in several positions of leadership on the Union Hospital Auxiliary, most recently as president and in the past as vice president and a patient advocate. In that role she streamlined the structure of the hospital's auxiliary so that it functioned more effectively and efficiently. This past June Cindy presented the hospital with a check from the Union Hospital Auxiliary in the unprecedented amount of $162,000. The office of president of the auxiliary requires a significant volunteer commitment. Cindy reported to the Volunteer Coordinator in the Foundation office and her role included coordination of many functions including the hospital gift shop, its thrift shop- which is named the Good as New Shop - and all fundraising activities. She also participated hands-on with many of the activities. Cindy also presented monthly reports of auxiliary activities to the Hospital Foundation Board of Directors and represents Union Hospital at the Maryland Association of Hospital Auxiliaries. Cindy is a member of the Women's Civic League of North East whose focus of giving is the Cecil County Public Library system. She was the liaison between the Civic League and the North East Chamber of Commerce. While maintaining a busy community service schedule Cindy always has time for her husband, Charles Paris, her children and grandchildren as well as her many friends. She was Charles right-hand woman when he served many years as the club s Buildings and Grounds Chair and Sail Race Chair. Cindy and Charles sail their boat Luminous from D dock at the club and are frequent diners in the Burgee Lounge. Cindy is beloved in the community and a valued voice for the continued improvement of Cecil County. Steve Young, The NERYC Service Award This award honors a club member who has gone above and beyond in dedication and commitment to the NERYC. This year we received 4 nominations for this award, and they were all for the same person! This year s award goes to a quiet person who gets things done. He is a general handyman, a superb landscaper and all-around good guy who always has a smile on his face.

8 I think we all know a lot of what Steve Young does to keep the club facilities running smoothly. But did you know that on Saturday and Sunday of Easter weekend he spent several hours dealing with a broken pipe and several inches of water in the basement? Did you know that there were many days and nights this past winter he had to thaw frozen pipes to prevent further damage from them bursting? Or that on a steamy August weekend he used his sump pump and a hose to bail out a small speed boat on C dock that was in danger of sinking and then contacted the member who had not been down for a few weeks to inform him of an issue with the bilge on his boat. In addition, he and Dave B spent a couple days moving sprinklers around the lawn to help restore some green grass to a burned brown lawn in time for a weekend wedding. Steve is a constant presence on the docks, helping members and guests to tie up their boats into slips. He is also valued by all slip and mooring holders as a keen lookout since he is at the club so often. Steve goes above and beyond to head off any problems with the buildings and grounds of our club.

From the Dockmaster Slip reservations for the 2019 season have been going well. We have A & D dock full, 2 slips on B dock open and a handful of smaller slips open on C dock.

We still have plenty of moorings available. It is time to starting thinking about sending in your second payment as it is due in January. We also need a completed copy of the 2019 slip agreement and a copy of your insurance form. Please send in or drop them off at the club if you have not done so already. You can download the slip agreement form from our website under member s documents. The new season is not that far away, just think in 90 days we can be back in the water. 11 From Sail Chair, Julie Cottage 2019 is going to be a great year at North East River Yacht Club. As each New Year approaches, we each make plans to ensure it s a wonderful year. It is time to start getting fit to enjoy the water to your fullest, whether you are a social or boater member, young or mature. If it s OK with your doctor, and your boating partner, the following exercises have been approved by Bay Racer Coach Dingo. Once you master one level, work your way up to the next. By the time boating season opens, you will be ready to have a strong season! If you d like more information about these exercises check out STARTING OFF: (3 times per week): Warm up stretches 20 crunch sit-ups 20 Lunges 10 push ups 30 mins. light cardio GETTING STRONGER :( 3 times per week) Warm up stretches 20 alternating leg lift crunches (2 sets) 20 Mountain Climbers Wall Squats (3 sets of 1 minute) 20 push ups 45 mins. Cardio SO READY TO SAIL! : (3-4 times per week) Warm up stretches 20 alternating leg lift crunches (2 sets) 20 sit up crunches 20 Mountain Climbers Planks -work up to 1 minute each (feet together - alternate feet together then wide, lift right foot 10 secs., then left foot) Wall Squats (3 sets of 1 minute) Line Hops- If you have a line, great, if not, imagine one. Jump back and forth across this line. Speed does not matter just continual motion for a full minute. 20 push ups 45 mins. cardio, preferably some of this time is on a rowing machine Coach Dingo Challenge - If you really want to take it up a notch, use a Hiking Chair to get those core muscles ready: 3 min. for beginners, 5 min. intermediates, and 8 min. for stronger ones. For those interested in learning more about running races or helping out with the various races we will have this season at NERYC... Annapolis Yacht Club will christen its soon-to-be completed Sailing Center by conducting a broad-based symposium that will cover all aspects of race management. The inaugural AYC Race Officials Symposium, being held the weekend of February 23-24, 2019 will target both the novice and expert. Cost for attendees will be $75 and include access to all sessions across both days, continental breakfast and lunch both days, and a reception Saturday evening with snacks.
