1 North East River Yacht Club Member Newsletter At the Peak of the Chesapeake January 2008 Commodore s Report A very happy 2008 to everyone. Last night s New Year s Eve Gala was a great success. With over 100 members and guests in attendance, we danced well into the night to the stylistic sounds of our own House DJ Bob Cross and his wife Susan, we dined on a sumptuous menu of roasted pork loin and sea bass prepared for us by our new chef John Evans and his able assistant Wanda, we were honored to welcome home from Iraq, Aaron Dietrich on his 2 week R&R, had photos taken in front of our own Times Square New Year s Eve mural, we enjoyed beautiful floral centerpieces created by Steve and Ginny Somers, and we burned effigies just prior to our midnight toasts and frivolity to rid ourselves of our old demons, vices and burdens to end the evening at I now need to find time to take all of our beautiful holiday decorations down and pack them away for next year, but today would not be that day. So if you are at the club in the next few days and still see the Christmas tree standing tall in the corner, please forgive me, because 3C s (Chesapeake Commodore s Club) annual weekend in Ocean City, MD has me this weekend! I hope that everyone who I was not able to see over the holidays had a wonderful Christmas and New Years. I hope you have had a chance to view and enjoy the Photo Shows of the Wassail Bowl and New Year s Eve gala. Also check out the NERYC events group on my Snapfish link which you will always find at the end of every I send. I d like to take this time to thank all of the officers and members who helped with the annual staff appreciation night on December 21st, when we provided our paid employees a fabulous evening of dinner and dancing. I would also like to acknowledge everyone who continues to give so unselfishly of their time and talents to our club because, without all of you, we would not be enjoying the resurgence of energy and growth we have been blessed with over the last year. We are off to a roaring start for With the many parties behind us and a full calendar of events ahead, you will never find yourself lacking for camaraderie and socialization at NERYC. Next week we have Birthday/Anniversary night on the calendar with live entertainment by DJ Cross, and later this month we have our 4 th Annual 3 Sheets to the Wind Regatta hosted by the Roeckers and the Fergusons to raise money for the Capital fund. The months ahead will continue full steam ahead as Justine Roecker will direct our NERYC thespians in another Murder Mystery dinner show and Bruce and Barbi Taylor have a fantastic pre-season race seminar planned for early spring. So despite the fact that all of our boats are on the hard for the winter season, we still have much to offer at NERYC. Come down and join us for one, two or all of the upcoming events. Don t forget Friday evenings for our newly introduced Happy Hour Specials or Sunday s Half Priced Burger nights starting this month! See you next weekend for Birthday Night! Commodore Lisa Mack

5 5 FROM THE VICE Happy New Year everybody, its 2008! Just in case you have been curious and wondering what s happening in the Vice Commodore s life, I have some topics that will make your cocktail party spring to life. First, the Board has approved a new insurance policy with additional coverage at a price equal to last year s premium. Thanks go out to Insurance Chair Bob Efford for following through with correspondence, analysis and meetings. At December s BOG meeting, we reviewed the current disaster recovery plan for computers used by the office staff. A detailed response from Darlene Hamlin assured us that a program is in place and necessary back-ups are being done. I thought that you would like to know that NERYC is staying active in the CBYCA (Chesapeake Bay Yacht Clubs Association) with three of our members very actively involved. Kay Brawley, CBYCA Legislative Director for Maryland, was recently appointed by the Governor of Maryland to the Maryland Marine Industry Economic Task Force. We also have Cecilia Battaglini, who is CBYCA Legislative Director for Delaware and Renee Landan who is CBYCA s Ship Supply Officer. As Vice Commodore, I am NERYC s Delegate and Rear Commodore Roger Hughes will be serving as NERYC s alternate Delegate. CBYCA is comprised of 127 member Clubs from the Chesapeake Bay as well as the Potomac and Delaware Rivers. CBYCA s purpose is to support recreational boating through quality legislation and safe boating/ education. Checkout CBYCA.org for more information. Recently, the CBYCA held their 50 th Anniversary Commodore s Ball in Annapolis, honoring Coles Marsh as the new Commodore. Approximately thirteen of us, along with Princess Kelly attended. Also, couple of weeks before, my wife Lynn and I had the privilege of escorting Princess Kelly to the Maryland Yacht Club Commodore s Ball in November. Commodore Lisa Mack and I attended a Chesapeake Bay meeting of Commodores/Vice-Commodores at the Bush River Yacht Club. The meetings purpose was to create talking points aimed at possibly lowering Ball costs, improving Opening Day decorum and to showcase banquet hall availability and cost with follow-up meetings in the Spring. V/C Jon Fowler FROM THE REAR Don t miss the upcoming events at NERYC. The full 2008 event calendar is included at the end of this issue. Please refer to the website for the most up to date version throughout the year. January 2008 is going to kick off one of the most exciting years in our clubs history. Birthday/New Member Night attendance and participation continues to increase every month. Please put this evening on your calendar and come spend the evening with the celebrants. Steve has pulled out all of the stops with a buffet and Robert and Regina have again arranged music for the evening. This month we will have the live offerings of Larry Buck. Come enjoy an outstanding evening of Food, Beverages and Music with our birthday boys and girls as well as important anniversaries. January 26 th is the date for the annual Three Sheets to the Wind event. Ron and Justine will be our host and hostess for the annual event that lets the power boaters try to understand why some boats have sails. Always a lot of fun and a great place to spend a cold winter evening with great people. Please try to support the dining room and beverage center on the 26 th. It s in the books, but Congratulations to Lisa and Ken for another great party. The New Years Eve Celebration was perfect for an old timer like me with a young trophy wife. Good friends, dancing, music and plenty of laughs and fun. I hope to again make this an annual event at The Friendliest Club on the Bay. Plans are being made for the silent auction to be held on April 19 th. As you are all aware this event is the major fundraiser for the Commodores Ball and other social events during the year. Hopefully, money raised during this fun event will also help pay for improvements to update the kitchen facilities. Please begin thinking what you would like to donate. We are hoping for good creative items that will bring high bids. Keep in mind that this event will be a much more exciting way to spend money than paying an assessment! Additional information will be coming soon concerning this important event. Thanks to the members that have come forward to host or help with events. I am still recruiting members and passing along names to committee chairs of member volunteers. If any member has an interest in helping, I would greatly appreciate your help. I am still looking for member volunteers to chair, co-chair, or be a committee member for the 2008 club activities. Please respond to my address at roger.hughes@prudentialcarruthers.com if you can help out the club. R/C Roger Hughes

7 7 FROM THE FLEET FROM THE DOCKS We have turned the corner and the days are getting longer as we proceed into January, The winter upgrades and repairs to our boats can now begin in preparation for the upcoming cruising season. The opportunity for suggestions on cruise destinations will continue to be considered even though destinations have been selected with input from members over the last few weeks. We will begin our season April 26 with a Shakedown Cruise to Chesapeake City basin where slips are available as well as anchorage area. For early arrivals, bulkhead space is available from Chesapeake City Town Hall at a minimal fee if you re lucky enough to arrive early. The Chesapeake Inn has floating docks for those who prefer a slip for the night. Our Memorial Day Cruise, May 24,25,26 will be the traditional sail to Inner Harbor with Baltimore Marine Center the probable destination at this time. Following this event, additional destinations for the remainder of the week will be selected as interest and suggestions are received. The July 4 th marina party will coincide with North East fireworks with beverages available for Fleet Captain s locker. The slip holders on A dock will have all members as guests for the event. The Mid Summer Cruise destination tentatively is Maryland Yacht Club for July 12 and 13 th. The Late Summer Cruise, August 2 and 3 rd will be to Middle River with marina location to be determined. The Labor Day Weekend Cruise, August 30 September 1 will feature Rock Hall as our destination. Our traditional Frostbite Cruise will take us back to Sassafras Harbor Marina on October 11 and 12 th. Please add these dates to your summer plans and enjoy the fellowship with your fellow members and guests. Additional information for each cruise will be made available as we proceed into the season. The Officer of the Day program will continue this year and volunteers requested. This service was well accepted by visiting clubs as well as our own members. A sign-up sheet will be available for those willing to participate Joe Reynolds - Fleet Captain Happy New Year! Yes winter is upon us and the sailors who have decided to remain on the docks are hanging in there. Many thanks to the hardy souls who helped me out on docks over the year. Don t worry if you missed these fun events as more will follow. In addition to the regular tasks, we do have a number of projects planned to continue to improve our marina for the coming year. These include more dingy racks, more safety ladders, additional cleats for transients and hopefully a sign on the attenuator to let folks know who we are from the water side. We currently have a few slips available although I have had a number of calls of interest about several of those already. Please watch our internet site as I will try and post the most up to date list of vacancies as they change. All the moorings are full and we continue to have a waiting list for them. Since we have now entered a new year, please make sure the club has your current insurance documentation and that all slip payments are up to date. Thank you for you co-operation in this regard. Looking forward to meeting up with you in the club over the off-season. Nigel Veater - Dock Master Nautical Terms of the Month FATHOM - Not something hard to comprehend, but rather a depth measure of six feet. NAUTICAL MILE - Not beachfront real estate, but rather a measure of one minute of latitude; approximately 6076 feet - about 1/8 longer than the statute mile of 5280 feet. KNOT - Not a tangle of line, but rather a measure of speed equal to one nautical mile p/hour. SEA ROOM - Not a room with a view, but rather a safe distance from the shore or other hazards.

9 9 FROM RECRUITMENT Joyous greetings to all our wonderful members! I trust you all had at least 12 days of merriment and then some as is the NERYC way! Now, I know some of you held back your sponsorships of new members, either because of Beef Wellington, pheasant under glass, or duck with demi-glace commitments OR perhaps you felt unsure of securing TWO new members with so little time left on the clock in December. The good news is that now you have a full 12 months to woo those fun, neglected neighbors to Birthday night (perhaps THEIR birthday!) so they can enjoy our coveted sunsets, convivial, festive atmosphere and join our ranks of water-loving NERYC Chesapeakeans! I will be most happy to connect any folks you know to leisure-sail, racing-sail, or power-boat people for a mentoring of sorts. Don't be shy about bringing friends around to our digs, they will feel welcome in no time!
