North East River Yacht Club At The Peake of the Chesapeake Social, Power or Sail, We Have Something For Everyone Member Newsletter February COMMODORE S REPORT The view from the club house overlooking the frozen North East River makes you wonder how much longer do we have to deal with this long cold winter. The marina is empty except for one lonely sailboat that has weathered the frigid northwest winds, however, well protected from the ice by the ice eaters. We all are certainly anxious to look out over the marina to see all slips occupied, the sailors busy preparing their vessels to race and the powerboats exiting for a cruise down the river again. Hang in there; we are a few short weeks away from getting back to our reason for being members, that is, boating and socializing with our friends. During the winter, your board members have been busy preparing the way for a great season full of events to meet everyone s interest. Our marketing and membership committees began early in the season getting the word out to various publications and sailing organizations promoting NERYC. We already have nine outside events scheduled with several more showing interest. Board members along with our princess Gabriella Mack have been attending Commodores Balls around the bay showing support of their clubs which in turn will result in reciprocal support. We will be having a table at the Annual Cecil County Expo in March promoting our restaurant, marina, and sailing programs. We also need your help in getting the word out about NERYC offering the best marina on the upper bay, great social schedule, and facilities to handle business meetings and wedding receptions. NERYC was well represented at the annual Chesapeake Commodore s Club weekend and Ball held at the Princess Royale in Ocean City on January 7 th to 9 th. Several of our members performed in the skit competition which reflected the weekend theme of Casino Royale to honor incoming commodore Scott Tennyson and his first lady. Thanks to Eileen and Stephen Stewart, Lisa and Kenny Mack, and Lady Laura for taking the time to rehearse and for doing us proud in O.C. This event is open to club members and is a great way to spend a winter weekend and overcome the symptoms of cabin fever. Contact Lisa Mack to make reservations for next January Three C s Ball. Our club is alive and well and our events are unfolding early this year. We have the Super Bowl Party, Raingutter Regatta, aka Three Sheets to the Wind, and the Sail Race Seminar. The restaurant is also having a special Valentine s Day dinner which has always been a very special way to treat your valentine. Don t forget our monthly Birthday/Anniversary/New Member night held the 2 nd Friday. We need all members support to make these events successful and fun. Watch for flyers and s being circulated with more event details. I am looking forward to a great fun filled year at NERYC and let the Parties Begin. Commodore Joe Reynolds

FROM THE VICE OK, so I am now officially tired of the snow! I'd move south, but then I would not have the access to the NERYC that I enjoy, so I guess I'll just have to stick it out and wait until the spring thaw. Speaking of the Yacht Club, we are once again open after the annual holiday hiatus, and if Januarys Birthday night was any indication, Lady Gloria and I were not the only ones that missed the fun and camaraderie our club provides. The club was packed well into the evening by members enjoying their favorite libations, telling stories, and listening or dancing to the tunes spun by Bob Cross. Be sure to mark February 11th on your calendars for this month s celebration. Now, speaking of celebrations, on Sunday evening, February 13th, the club will hold the Third Annual Valentines Dinner. April and Chef John have once again compiled a fantastic menu, with multiple choices, for you and your significant other to enjoy a cozy evening together. Reservations are required for this dinner, and menu selections need to be place with your reservation. Please see the flyer, with the menu, elsewhere in this issue. The clubs Opening day festivities will be here before we know it. Susan Woron has once again graciously agreed to organize food donations for the day, so look in your in boxes for her soon. Well, that s about all for this month, stay warm and be careful on those snow covered streets. Lady Gloria and I are looking forward to seeing you all at the club at one or more of the several events planned this month. As always, please contact me with any questions, comments or suggestions. FROM THE REAR Need a cure for the Winter Blues: the answer is to attend events at NERYC in February. We have a host of activities lined up including: Feb 6 th Sunday Super Bowl Party at 3:00 pm get in on the gaming activities Feb 11 th Friday Birthday, Anniversary, and new member night we had a great turnout last month Feb 13 th Valentine s Dinner bring a date or bring yourself for a great night with Vice Lady Gloria Feb 19 th Saturday 3 sheets to the wind party get ready to blow the night away Feb 26 th Saturday is the date of our first cruise details forthcoming from Fleet Captain Mark Look for the calendar of events in the Waterline and on the website: NERYC_Calendar.htm Hopefully all the snow clears soon so we can start readying our boats for the water and another great year on the Bay. Our boat is getting a little old & ragged so it may be time for an upgrade soon. Well, that's it for now; keep an eye on your for notification of upcoming club events. If you have a suggestion for an event, or want to help with an event, just let me know. We're going to make 2011 a fun year for boating! R/C Steve Hogan V/C Russ Zehnacker 4

SAILING NEWS With snow continuing to fall from the sky there is not much going on in the sailing world right now. The Laser fleet continues to be frozen in and any work you might want to do on the boat is postponed for a while. So as a result we have to do what we can to keep ourselves entertained. The sail program committee is trying to help the fleet out of the winter boredom with a selection of winter indoor activities. Coming up on February 19 th will be the 3 Sheets to the Wind Regatta. This is a great event for family friends, kids, prospective members and anyone else suffering from the winter time blues and looking for some form of escape. Then in March we will hold our annual sail race seminar. This year s program is geared towards the more novice/intermediate racer and crew members. For those of you looking to start racing, to improve your skills, learn about crewing, or if you could just use a pre-season refresher course, this is the place to be. Register online now. FROM THE PRINCESS So far this winter had been a cold one filled with lots of snow. I'm ready for warm weather to come and the boating season to come with it. My winter has consisted of warm nights snuggled up watching movies and drinking hot coco, going sledding with my best friends, work, and the little school I've been able to get to with all the since the snow. I have a couple balls coming up soon and I'm excited to get back into the swing of things with all my princess sisters. One thing I'm really looking forward to is the openings and the pretty sun dresses we get to wear. Keep warm and safe out in the cold see you around the club. Princess Gabriella On February 19 th at 4 PM we will hold a Jr. Sail meeting for all kids and adults with an interest in program. We will discuss the summer camp program, establishing a junior club, the summer racing program and our needs regarding instructors. If you have an interest in any part of the junior program please make every effort to attend. Lastly, here is sailing tip number 3. It is easy and you can do it in the comfort of your own home, take time to study the ISAF racing rules of sailing. You view them at You will find a wide range or web based systems that can take you through the rules with great tutorials such as Fully understanding the rules will not only keep things safe on the race course they give you a huge competitive advantage. See you at the 3 Sheets Event. Rick Hanson Sail Race Chairperson 7

FROM THE BAR & RESTAURANT Have you ever dined in a restaurant and waited a long time to get your food after you ordered? Most of us have had that experience at one time or another. It can be caused by a variety of factors, unproductive employees, poor coordination between the front and back of the house, various problems in the kitchen, or more customers than anticipated. Restaurants keep records of their daily sales and schedule staff based on the historical average sales for that day and then add or reduce staff based on what is happening that particular day to make it busier or slower. For example, a restaurant will schedule staff for a Thursday night based on average Thursday night sales, but then put on extra staff on a particular Thursday if there is an event in the vicinity that will draw more guests than usual into the restaurant. At NERYC, we encourage reservations, but don t insist on them. Have you ever entered our restaurant on a Sunday night in the summer anticipating a half-priced burger at the same time as 14 other people entered the restaurant, and the restaurant was already fairly busy? You probably waited minutes for your food. The cause of your wait was that the kitchen was overwhelmed with too many orders at once. At NERYC each order is cooked to order. We do not have an assembly-line of frozen food like a fast food place. Our sauces and gravies are made from scratch, so if the gravy or sauce on the special is used up by more orders than expected, the chef has to make some more. Add our cranky, well used, equipment into the mix, and you can see how 20 orders coming in within 10 minutes of each other might back up the kitchen. One way to alleviate this is to make reservations. By evening out the flow of guests, it will help remove some of the peaks and valleys for the production staff. While reservations will never be required, they are strongly recommended. John Beardsley Bar & Restaurant Chair 12

FROM MEMBERSHIP Even though it s cold and snowy, despair not because Spring is just around the corner. This would be a great time to invite friends, neighbors, or a business acquaintance to have dinner with you at the club on one of these many snowy weekend evenings. Recruiting is everyone s responsibility and we need your help. We have 3 great events coming up in February. First off the Super Bowl Party on Feb.6 th. You can cheer your team on and maybe win a little cash in the process and this this is a great event to entertain guests. Next is birthday/anniversary night on Friday, Feb 11 th with DJ Bob Cross for your listening and dancing pleasure. The Burgee Lounge is open for dinner and if you are celebrating a birthday or anniversary, why not bring a friend to share in your celebration. And finally, everyone s favorite, the 3 Sheets to the Wind Rain Gutter Regatta on Feb.19 th. Again another opportunity to invite your friends and be sure to bring the kids to this event! The proceeds from this event support the sailing programs. Prospective member folders are available at the bar, in the vestibule, and in the office. Please take a few and give them to anyone you feel would be interested in finding out more about the Club. The business expo that was cancelled in January has been rescheduled for March 15 th...more information will be forthcoming. We hope to recruit members and outside events for the club at this venue. Contact Mike Wagner or me if you would like to volunteer to help at this event. See you at the club. Josie Dallas Membership Chair FROM MARKETING Yeah, I know, you re looking out your window at snow and thinking Summer Camp? - this guy is crazy. However, I in reality, a lot of parents start sorting out summer activities for their kids in Feb and March, so its time to start promoting NERYC s Learn to Sail Summer Program. We re kicking things off this year by participating in a Camp Fair at Tower Hill School in Northern Delaware on February 3rd, from 3:30-7:00pm. Over 100 camp organizations fill the school s Field House with exhibits, promoting their various summer camps. Thousands of families from the tri-state area attend this event each year, and NERYC will have a booth promoting our Summer Program as well as providing good exposure for the club. We ve also sent out news releases to SpinSheet, The Mariner, Cecil Whig, New Journal and a number of other groups with camp directories announcing our 2011 schedule. A notice to the flag officers at other CBYCA clubs will be going out next week. Here s where we need member help. I ve attached a copy of our 2011 Camp brochure to this . Please forward a copy to anyone you know who has children that might be interested in attending our program. There are physical copies of this at the club in the vestibule - please take as many as you like and hand them out, or put them up on a bulletin board at school, church, etc. I ve also attached a copy of our news announcement. If you know of a local publication in your area that publishes small stories about local activities for kids, please forward this to them. We have a very unusual program that a lot of people don t know about, so it is newsworthy and the kind of thing editors like to include. Many groups in your community sell small inexpensive ads in their activity programs, much like NERYC does in our opening day booklet. Examples are programs for middle school and high school plays, dance and music recitals, etc. Families who attend these performances are ideal candidates for hearing about our Club and our Summer camp. We have a small budget set aside to participate with advertisements in a few of these kind of programs, so if you become aware of an opportunity like this, please let me know. A lot of Spring and end-of-school year activities are coming up. Word-of-mouth by our members about our club and all it has to offer is always the best way to promote our organization. I appreciate your assistance. Michael Wagner Marketing Committee 14
