North East River Yacht Club At The Peake of the Chesapeake Social, Power or Sail, We Have Something For Everyone Member Newsletter January Commodore s Report By now most of the fleet has been pulled from the water and January is starting to settle in with its cold, grey overcast skies predicting possible snowy/icy weather. The furnaces are officially running full time, sending out gentle warmth while we recline inside on our favorite chair, perusing catalogs of boat information. It seems ironic, that only months ago, we were on our boats reading the same catalogs in the baking summertime heat and making up a different list of parts numbers. In December, we had our annual NERYC Wassail Bowl party that was well attended. As part of the event, we had a used coat clothing drive, which were later delivered and gratefully accepted by the local homeless shelter in Elkton. Also, a collection of unwrapped toys for tots was done and I m sure that these contributions brightened many a child s Christmas. Thanks everyone for your generosity. So far this year we have approximately forty-one slip contracts and nine mooring contracts. This amounts to thirtynine vacancies. All former slip holders have been contacted via mail correspondence and some with phone follow-up to find reasons for leaving. We have the entire gamut of reasons ranging from - getting out of boating, poor health, selling boat, shallow draft at low tide, fairway difficult to maneuver with strong crosswinds, loss of income, disposable income tanked with the stock market down turn, etc. Don t hesitate to promote the Sail Races, Junior Sail Camp, Club cruises, picnic area use, floating docks, lack of barnacles, social events, 79 year old classic Clubhouse, great chef and climate controlled restaurant. Every year, we manage to lose several members for one of a myriad of reasons and we are sorry to see them leave. It is not uncommon to hear that other time demands get in the way (life sapping activity such as work) making it difficult to utilize all that NERYC has to offer. Meanwhile, great effort is being made by our Membership Chair Peg Brown and Marketing Chair Joan Brown to boost membership and slip renters. Any leads for new members would be a great help to these two committees and would be very much appreciated. The new Club calendar is coming out and we know already that changes will be showing up monthly. With ongoing strong efforts to book outside events, we may on rare occasion move Club events. Commodore Jon Fowler Meanwhile, I encourage everyone to assist the marketing committee, Chaired by Joan Brown. Talk to your friends, acquaintances and invite them down to the Club to show off our facility. Word of mouth is the best advertising.

2 FROM THE VICE The Holiday Season, as always, has ended in a rush of family, friends and gifts for all of the Hughes, Thanks to everyone at the club for your goodwill and seasons wishes. As we all wind down from the tumult, it is time for me to prepare for my duties for I have great memories of the 2008 season and look forward to another outstanding year at the North East River Yacht Club. I would like to tackle the legal issues as soon as possible as the ad hoc committee is seated and ready to answer the questions that have arisen over the past four years. We have an opportunity to address all of the concerns and I would like to have an open meeting before the boating season to insure that all of your questions are adequately answered. This will hopefully allow the club to hold an annual general meeting focusing on more constructive issues and that will make us a stronger and more cohesive club. Please, me at rogerneryc@mris.com with issues that you might have with any legal issues that concern membership, ownership or legal status of our Club. The weather during the past week has made me very aware that opening day is just around the corner. I am officially now asking for volunteers to help with the events of the weekend. Last year we had one of the best attended and successful opening days on the bay. I would like to make this opening day as successful and let the visitors from other clubs understand that we are The friendliest club on the Bay. Do not forget to make your reservations for the Murder Mystery Event. V/C Roger Hughes FROM THE REAR The Holiday Season is now behind us and NERYC is preparing for an exciting year with a fun filled schedule promising to offer something for everyone. The Birthday/ Anniversay/New Member night will start off the year on Friday, January 9 th at 1930hrs with Bob Cross providing entertainment. Come out and enjoy an evening with fellow members and help celebrate the special day for our Birthday/Anniversary guys and gals. Make your reservations for the Murder Mystery Dinner Theatre being offered on Saturday, January 24 th at 1900 hrs and Sunday, January 25 th at 1400hrs. Ron and Justine have pulled together an all star cast for an event you don t want to miss. This has always been a sell out and the two dates will give all members an opportunity to enjoy the play as you support the club and restaurant. The Super Bowl party will be held on February 1 at 1930 hrs where we can cheer on our favorite team and have a chance to win some cash if you choose to play the board game. Ron Roecker will be setting up the betting board and determine the winners. This is a fun evening to help support the restaurant budget so come out have some fun. Plans are being made for the Silent Auction/Oyster Roast to be held on Saturday, April 4 th with Ginny Sommers chairing the auction. This event is the major fundraiser for the Commodore s Ball and other social events during the year. Please begin setting aside items you would like to donate that are not being used by you that someone else is waiting to bid on. The more money we can raise reduces the chance of paying an assessment! This event will continue to be advertised as we need your support. The 2009 Event Calendar is included at the end of this Waterline issue. Look through the calendar and let me know if you have an interest in chairing or co-chairing an event. I am still recruiting members to make this year s activities successful. Please respond to my address at h2ohotel@yahoo.com if you can help. R/C Joe Reynolds

3 FROM THE FLEET 2009 is here and time to start thinking about the coming seasons cruises! As I announced in last months issue, we will kick off this years cruise activities with the popular Lantern Queen Dinner cruise on March 7 th. The cruise will begin at 1730 and includes a buffet dinner, beer, wine and soft drinks. Mixed drinks are available at $5 each. After the cruise, we will reconvene at the club to continue the party. Please call the club to make your reservation and send in your check for $56 per person with the notation Lantern Queen. Remember, space is limited and as last year, this is sure to be a sell out event, so call soon. This years Shakedown Cruise will be the weekend of April We will be heading up the C & D Canal to the Summit North Marina for the festivities. Summit has all floating docks, water and electric, a picnic area for our Saturday evening happy hour and possibly a restaurant. (I m hoping it will be open by then). All this for the low, low price of $1.25 a foot/ night plus $5/ night for electric. As an added bonus, since this is the shakedown for the season, I have arranged with the Bear West Marine Store for a 10% discount on all maintenance and safety items for the weekend for NERYC members. For those of you coming by boat, your fleet captain will be providing a car for you to make the quick trip to the store to do all your beginning of the season shopping! Remember to bring your membership card to receive your discount. Saturday afternoon at 1630, we will commence with the traditional fleet happy hour. You provide munchies and snacks and $8 per person or $15 per couple for the Fleet Captains Locker. The Locker will provide beer, wine, water, soft drinks, and J&B! Whether you plan to come by boat, car, sea plane or foot, please mark your calendars and RSVP to me with your boat requirements, ( LOA, electric, arrival day) and plan to start the cruising season with a bang. The remainder of our cruising season is shaping up nicely, and while not finalized here is the tentative scheduled. May June 13 July 3 rd July Sept 5-7 Oct Baltimore Yacht Club Opening Weekend, Make your own reservations ASAP! 2 nd Annual NERYC Fleet Pass and Review Dock party with fireworks by the town of North East Mid-Summer Cruise to Crescent YC Kent Island YC Frostbite Cruise, Sassafras Harbor Marina In closing, remember to please contact me with any comments, suggestions, or questions. See you at the club! F/C Russ Zehnacker MY NEW YEAR S RESOLUTIONS ~ Pay NERYC dues ~ Pay NERYC Slip fees ~ Dine at NERYC at least twice this month ~ Sign up for Murder Mystery dinner ~ Sign up for 1 st cruise of the year What s on your list? FROM YOUR PRINCESS D Hamlin I hope everyone had a fun and joyous holiday season. I know I sure did. I spent my winter break with all my wonderful friends and family. Also I went on a small trip up to New York with some of our fellow NERYC members to visit our friends Bonnie and Maria. We saw a show and walked the city for the day, it was quite fun indeed. Santa treated me very well this year, sending my family and me some very enjoyable gifts. It s sad to see that Christmas has come and gone once again and I ll be going back to school soon. In just a few weeks I ll be ending my first semester of school, meaning state testing, final exams, but most of all new classes and new friends. I m very excited to meet new people, and to learn new things this year. I d like to offer my personal condolences to the entire Lotter family on the loss of their son Warren. Even though I only met him once he welcomed me as a friend. I can t even imagine how they must feel. I am keeping him and his family in my prayers as I am sure is the entire yacht club family. I take comfort knowing that he got to fulfill his life s dream of serving in the armed forces. He will not be forgotten. Gabriella Mack

4 NERYC s Fourth Murder Mystery January 24 th 7:00 PM January 25 th 2:00 PM Call info@neryc.com You've been invited to Lisa and Michael's wedding and reception, and you may find yourselves doing the Hokey Pokey or becoming a member of the wedding party. Wedded bliss is not the only thing that is short-lived as the nuptials turn noxious and someone bumps off the mother-in-law. You'll laugh till you cry figuring out whodunit in this silly trip down the isle.

5 FROM THE RACE COURSE Well 2009 is upon us and we have a busy season planned. The Junior Sailing committee is already hard at work planning our expanded summer sailing camp sessions, which will run weekly from Monday through Thursday, from 10AM till around 3:30PM, with supervision till 4:30 upon request, starting June 22nd and running through to August 3rd. We will cater for advanced, intermediate and beginner sailors. Participants are encouraged to attend multiple sessions. Please spread the word and help us to promote attendance amongst your family, your friends and their friends. Nonmembers are welcome. Details will be up on the website shortly and printed promotional material may also be obtained from Mike Wagner. Michael.Wagner7@comcast.net Don t miss the annual Three Sheets to the Wind Junior Sailing fundraiser on February 28th. This fun event is a great respite from those winter sailing blues. No experience required, as long as you can blow through a straw, you can participate. So bring your friends, meet up with your old buddies, and have some fun in support of a good cause. Notice to all power boaters: you have been challenged to take on the sailors! Don t be caught out! On January 1st, the racing rules of sailing changed. Remember you can t play the game if you don t understand the rules. It is one thing to just read the rules, it s another to really understand how they apply in different situations out on the course. This is exactly why you should not miss our Rules Seminar scheduled for March 21st The event will run from 10AM till 3PM with a break for lunch and will be facilitated by an expert from North U. It has been specially designed to not only to explain the changes, but also to help de-mystify the rules, explain how to put them into practice, enhance tactical skills, and ultimately improve racing performance. Please do not let this great opportunity pass you by. Since this event will also double as a fundraiser for our Junior Sailing Program, we are counting on your support! Please encourage your crew and friends to be there too. Look out for more details shortly. Lastly, it is with great sadness that we acknowledge the tragic and untimely death of a special young member of our NERYC sailing family, and extend our deepest sympathies to our dearest friends Barry, Jenn, Justin and Michelle on the loss of their son and brother. There are really no words except to say that we are here for you. Although it's difficult today to see beyond the sorrow, may looking back in memory help comfort you tomorrow. Warren may you rest in peace.
