North East River Yacht Club At The Peake of the Chesapeake Social, Power or Sail, We Have Something For Everyone Member Newsletter August COMMODORE S REPORT From the Commodore s Desk Quite a few members of our club were able to set sail down the Bay for the 4 th of July Holiday. Many of us were able to enjoy the fireworks from North East to Rock Hall, Baltimore, and Washington DC. Part of the enjoyment of my trip to DC was the ability to visit other Chesapeake Bay Yacht Clubs Association member clubs (CBYCA) on the Chesapeake. One of the first things I did when becoming Commodore was to invite all of the clubs on the bay with a marina to reciprocate with us at a fee of $25 per night plus electricity. Many of the clubs that have not joined us in the past contacted me expressing an interest in the special pricing for their clubs. With only half of the season gone, Linda and I have almost recovered our NERYC membership fee in savings by visiting other clubs instead of staying at public marinas. The personal attention and help we received was outstanding. If you are going to be traveling down the bay I would encourage you to visit other clubs taking advantage of the reciprocity and the hospitality. If you have any questions, I will be glad to call for you and verify our relationship with any club you might wish to visit. Chesapeake Bay Yacht Clubs Association The CBYCA is a non-profit, volunteer organization of 129 clubs from Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Delaware, New Jersey and the District of Columbia. The purpose of the organization is to support recreational boaters through safe boating and education, quality legislation, Chesapeake Bay environment matters, and interaction with other national and regional boating organizations. The CBYCA is very concerned with serious issues and has volunteers working with the legislatures in all six states represented by the member clubs. Several of the concerns of the organization include mandatory boating education, personal floatation devices, boat taxes and fees, dredging issues, liquid natural gas facilities, environmental issues, navigation boating operation, and consumer affairs. NERYC has a very strong presence in the CBYCA. The 2011 Commodore will be 30-year+ NERYC member Kay Brawley, the Legislative Director is our Past Commodore Celia Battaglini, the Treasurer is John Hakemian and the Supply Officer is Laura Reynolds. If you would like to be involved with the organization, please contact Kay Brawley as there is plenty of work to go around. Additional information may be found by going to Linda and I will be attending the CBYCA Holiday Ball on December 11 at Turf Valley where Kay will be inaugurated in her new office. We hope many more NERYC members will join us. Yacht Clubs of Maryland YCM is a non-profit, volunteer organization of 33 clubs from Maryland. The purpose of the Association shall be to provide a means for close and frequent interaction and mutual support among member Yacht Clubs for the purpose of planning social and charitable events, advancing the sport of yachting and promoting the sciences of seamanship and navigation. The association will seek to provide value to its member Yacht Clubs by encouraging reciprocal agreements, communication and interaction among clubs and by promoting member clubs' events. The association will address local boating and waterway legislative, environmental and regulatory matters of mutual interest and, where appropriate, work in close cooperation with other organizations. PC Lisa Mack is our delegate to YCM and a member of the 2010/2011 Nominating Committee. Junior Sail Camp Our Junior Sail Camp is still going strong. If you have time try to visit the club during camp and enjoy for yourself the positive results this program brings to the Club and our community. If you would like to become involved or require further information on our Sailing Camp please contact Rick Hanson or Sharlene Wilkins. Commodore Roger Hughes

FROM THE VICE FROM THE REAR As a delegate to the CBYCA association, I have attended their meetings and now have a better understanding of their purpose. CBYCA plays a major role in keeping on top of the latest boating legislation and makes sure yacht clubs are aware of issues that affect all boat owners. Lady Laura serves as the Supply Officer for the association this year and we have enjoyed our involvement meeting at various yacht clubs around the bay. Dr. Kay Brawley is Vice Commodore of the CBYCA and hosted a cocktail party July 17 th for all the V/C s from all member clubs giving all an opportunity to exchange information and ideas as well as get to know one another better. Commodore Roger Hughes offered his lovely home for the gathering and I am sure the visiting V/C s will not forget this function. A crabby hat contest was held and our own Gary and Eve Reed done us proud with their Live Crab caps. We were also entertained by Eileen Law singing and John Hakemian accompanying her on the piano. If anyone would like more information on CBYCA, please let me know. This is the time of the year for everyone to enjoy the many activities scheduled and especially the club cruises arranged by our Fleet Captain, Steve Hogan. Laura and I look forward to Great Oak Marina cruise as this location has something for everyone. Also, moving into the fall season, Lady Laura and I are starting to prepare for the Wassail Bowl in early December. Enjoy the Chesapeake. V/C Joe Reynolds Hot enough for you? I for one am not complaining, as I still prefer Hot weather to the cold and snow of winter. July has been a busy month for Lady Gloria and me both at and away from the club. We finally got to spend a fair amount of quality time cruising aboard the "Nauti Nurse", and even spent a few nights tied up to the docks at the club. I ask, where else on the bay can you secure your boat to top quality floating docks, then a short walk to enjoy a great dinner and a couple of cold ones? Cap that off with an amazing sunset, and all for just $30 a night! I tell you, it's one of the best deals on the Chesapeake. The first night we stayed was for the July 3rd dock party and fireworks. The second was several weeks later when a good friend of Lady Gloria s, came out from the Mid West for a visit. She was VERY impressed with the clubs facilities and her dinner in the Burgee Lounge. I urge all of you to take advantage of our fine dining facilities when entertaining in or out of town guests. I pretty sure that they will find it just as enjoyable as we, the members, do. August at the club is a bit light in planned activities. This was somewhat deliberate, as many of you would rather be spending the waning days and evenings of summer enjoying your time on the water. Never less, we will still be celebrating Birthday, Anniversary, New Member Night on August 13th. Mark your calendars and come on down to the club to help your fellow members celebrate. Looking forwards to September, be sure to sign up early for the Labor Day Cruise and Commodores Cocktail Party. Kent Island Yacht Club is a great venue and a good time will be had by all who attend. That's all for now. Stay safe out on the Bay, and be sure to contact me if you have any questions, comments, or suggestions. Thanks R/C Russ Zehnaker. 4

FROM THE REAR We ve had a great July haven t we? We started the month with a well attended Fireworks Celebration complete with a floating band Jaded Angels who actually had less experience at floating than we anticipated but they were a really good band. Special thanks to David Andrews for arranging the band and Angel Reed for collecting the fees to make the band possible. All the money went to a good cause The Band. April Conway and the restaurant staff did a great job working with our committee to provide just the right amount of food and drink. Our Cruise to Lankford Bay had a well-attended Happy Hour and there were many Cruisers who ended a great week of cruising to meet other members at Lankford Bay. A special thanks to my wife Karen for filling in for me due to a last minute work commitment. We have a great cruise planned 8/6-8/10 at Great Oak Landing, you can t go wrong on this one. There s more to do than you can hope to in a weekend so please call x1 and confirm your reservations with Donnie. The more boats, the lower the rate ($2.50/ft for more than 10 boats, $2.75 for less than 10 boats). I ve got a long list of boats I ve given to Ernie Green at Kent Island Yacht Club for Labor Day weekend and I ll get down there before the cruise to see how we can pitchfork everyone in there. It should be a great weekend as we will have a DJ there to celebrate our annual Commodore s Cocktail Party to honor Roger Hughes for his commitment to the club over the years. Last cruise of the season will be our annual Frostbite Cruise to Sassafras Harbor Marina 10/8-10/10. Feel free to call ahead for reservations now. FROM THE PRINCESS This sure has been a great summer. I have been so busy between all the pool parties and BBQs it s sad that I only have a month left of it until school starts. One of the big events I have attended recently was our fantastic Member s Picnic and Dog show at the Yacht Club. I had so much fun seeing all the new and old members participating in the cardboard boat race and dressing their pups up in some pretty crazy costumes. Another thing I ve done this past month is attend the Cecil county fair with my friends. One of my favorite parts about the fair is going through all of the animal barns and seeing the ducks, goats, cows, and all of the other farm animals. I really wanted to bring one of them home but I m sure my mom wouldn t approve of a goat in the house. Other than that I m enjoying my summer by relaxing by the pool, visiting my friends with my new license, and eating crabs with the family. Hopefully I will see more of you all out on the Bay this summer. I ll see you all around the club and all the water! Princess Gabriella Please contact me with any comments, suggestions, or questions about our 2010 Cruise Schedule. See you at the club! Upcoming Cruises Late Summer -Great Oak Landing 8/6-8/8/2010 Labor Day - Kent Island Yacht Club 9/3-9/9-6/2010 Frostbite - Sassafras Harbor Marina 10/8-10/10/2010 F/C Steve Hogan 7
FROM THE RACE COURSE Sail Race Program The Thursday evening race series is going well and participation is building with more small boat competitors adding to the keelboat fleet each week. In addition racers and camper families are boosting the regular Thursday crowd and keeping the restaurant staff hopping. This is the time of the season when NERYC racers get to compete in events down the Bay. We had 6 boats and crews (one of the largest visiting club fleets) compete at GSA s Northern Bay Race Week down in the Middle River area at the end of June. Results as follows: Rosalita Rick Hanson 1 st and Lottery Barry Lotter 5 th in PHRF A, First Love - Gill Louw 8 th in PHRF B, Solaris Mike Wagner 2 nd in PHRF CD, Cinnamon Girl Cliff Shaw 3 rd and Therapy Nigel Veater 5 th in PHRF N. Congratulations to everyone. July 16 th we also had 2 boats - Lottery and Rosalita competing in the Solomon s Invitational, an overnight race from Annapolis to Solomon s Island, which acts as the delivery race for the SMSA Screwpile Lighthouse Challenge, one of the best regatta s on the Bay. With better than expected SW breeze it proved to be an exciting night of racing for all. I encourage more NERYC racers to consider participating in these away events. Not only are they a great experience, they also help reinforce the strength of our racing program as well as helping to boost recognition of the club around the Bay. On August 6 th a number of NERYC racers will once again take part in the 2010 Governor s Cup. Covering 70 miles, this race is the oldest and longest overnight race on the Chesapeake Bay, and 2010 marks the 37th running of the race from Maryland's current capital city to its first capital in St. Mary's City. For the first time in Governor's Cup history, Kattack tracking units will be supplied to every boat registered to race. This will provide real time tracking of each racer s progress down the Bay, which will add a new dimension to racers and supporters alike. The race may be viewed as it happens at Good luck to all our competitors. Junior Sail Program By the time you read this we will have concluded the 7 th session of sail camp with 2 remaining. Our I instructors and junior sailing committee have been hard at work to ensure that campers are having a great time and everything is running smoothly. Each week we continue to teach groups of kids to sail, introduce new families to the club, and enroll new members. I believe we are at 10 new family memberships and counting for This year we will top 240 registrations, bringing in approx. $35 000, which indicates the growing popularity of the program when you take into consideration that last year we had 196 registrations. We have an incredible return rate from previous years and the kids are having such a great time that each week we continue to accommodate requests for current campers to attend additional sessions. In fact we have a number of multiple children families who are attending four sessions of camp this year. If you have the opportunity, I encourage you to stop by the club when camp is in session, and witness first-hand the throng of activity and much-needed youthful vitality, that the summer program brings to our club each camp day. 10 THE JR SAIL PROGRAM Generational Passing of the Tiller Four years ago, NERYC sailor Kyle Hanson participated in his final race as a junior at Gibson Island Yacht Club. Kyle returned on July 13th to Gibson Island as NERYC head sailing coach, taking 3 junior sailors to their first away race. After loading boats and packing the truck yesterday, Kyle, along with Katherine Robinson, Iain Shand and Rachel Wagner headed out at 7:00am for a day of sailing just North of Annapolis. Katherine and Rachel competed in the Laser Radial class, and Iain sailed in the Optimist Dingy class. While they finishes weren t trophy worthy, they all learned a lot and are eager to attend more away regattas. After a long deliberation period and a slow communication by yours truly, the Pass In Review winners of a $50 credit at the Burgee Lounge are the following: #1 Another Half Time #2 Pegehiwine #3 Line Dance NERYC has had a drought in junior sailors participating in area races for a few years, but that trend is reversing today, and with the recent increase in family memberships and junior sailors, we can look forward to watching a resurgence in the coming years. We are so glad that ALL OF OUR NEW MEMBERS have joined the NERYC family. The member picnic was hot, but fun. We had 120+ adults, kids and dogs on the front lawn and inside in the AC enjoying an afternoon of fun and food overlooking the North East River. Those who were outside enjoyed water gun battles, water balloon tosses and bubble blowing to help keep cool. Fortunately there was a breeze on our hill for most of the afternoon to help those hardy souls enjoy the music of Sin City 2, which was arranged by Joan Fenza. We even had Pat and Cliff Shaw dance to a tune!! Our canine friends shined as they strutted their stuff and won prizes. Thank you to Justine Roecker for organizing and running the annual pooch parade. Our 3, under 12 and our 2, over 12 cardboard boat racers ALL finished the race mightily. Not one boat sank-hooray for Duct Tape!!! We heard many others planning to join the race next year. A big thank you to the Membership committee members: Susan Woron, Claire Brechter, Joan Fenza, Steve and Ginny Somers, Carolyn and Bill Doyle and John and Shirley Margan who organized and ran the picnic. We are going to try to have the Share a Ride event AGAIN!!! On September 19 th from 2-4pm captains will offer rides to Riders who will bring a light snack. If you would like to give a ride on your boat or if you would like to ride in a boat please let us know. Also let us know if your boat is sail or motor or what type of boat you would prefer to ride on. Please contact CAROLYN DOYLE. The photo contest decision day is coming closer. Please submit your photos by October 1 st. The membership committee will then pick the 10 they would like the members to vote upon. The top 3 winners will be on the front of the 2011 birthday and anniversary cards. You have 2 months to capture the spirit of NERYC, so keep looking for that perfect picture. The Board of Governors voted to continue to waive the initiation fee until October 1 st. Any new member, who joins before October 1, will pay only the prorated dues. Full regular 2011 dues are payable on or before January 1, 2011 for all members. Peg Brown Membership Chair In October the membership will vote for their favorite photo that was taken during 2010 that shows the spirit of NERYC!!!! Anyone can submit a photo taken with any type of camera! So begin looking and clicking for the shot that will be on the 2011 cards. We will use the 3 photos that receive the most votes. 13
POOCHES ON PARADE Wow! Did we have a fantastic turn out for the Dog Show. Despite the extremely hot weather we had 15 entrants this year. Westminster is getting barking mad because we are attracting some of the most handsome dogs in the Mid Atlantic region, not to mention some of the best dressed. Again this year, the category of softest ears and most expressive eyebrows were hotly contested! Our guest Judge, Audrey Edwards did a fantastic job discerning the best dog in each category. The part of Vanna White was played by our own Joan Fenza who did a fabulous job l letting the judges know which dog was next on the catwalk (so to speak). Here is a full listing: Rocky, a Black Lab-ish handled by Sydney Hergan won Most Expressive Eyebrows Lucy, a Collie handled by Rachel Wagner won the Most Gentle Eyes Pippa, a Cavalier King Charles handled by TJ Fryberger won Waggliest Tail Nikki, a Yellow Lab handled by Cliff Robinson won Most Soulful Eyes Tessa, a Black Lab handled by Anne Robinson won Pinkest Tongue Mocha, a Lab/Boxer handled by Belinda Adkins won Best Smile Jedi, a Beagle handled by Michael Adkins won Softest Ears Finley, an American Bulldog handled by Sandy Cummings won The Bob Barker Award Frasier a Jack Russell/Boxer handled by Gene Cummings won the Biggest Smile Fendi, a Red Standard Poodle handled by Susanne Miller won Poofiest Tack, a Golden Retriever handled by Sue Hanson won Most Team Spirit (in his NERYC t-shirt) Skipper, a Border Collie handled by Jon Fowler won Best Captain Lady, a Border Collie handled by Lynn Fowler won for Black White and Read All Over Clifford, a Shitzu (God bless you) handled by Susan Andrews won Prettiest in Pink Clayton, a Shitzu (Do you have allergies?) won Blue Boy while showing us all that it is possible to still look macho while wearing women's clothes.
