1 North East River Yacht Club At The Peake of the Chesapeake Social, Power or Sail, We Have Something For Everyone Member Newsletter December COMMODORE S REPORT First, Lady Diane and I want to send out a great big thank you to everyone who helped make the Commodore s Ball a success. It was a blast! Rear Commodore Suzanne Braun and Past Commodore George Braun were instrumental in the planning and execution of the event. Also, April and the staff did an excellent job of making sure everyone was taken care of during dinner and that the libations continued to flow and everyone had a great time. The Jamaican cuisine from Chef Brendon was excellent. I don t think I could have eaten another one of his coconut shrimp - those things were addictive! If you missed this event, you really missed a great time. As your Commodore, I want to you to know that I have the greatest confidence in the members that make up our Board this year. In basic terms, this is your team. We have to win at the game of club management and club business. We are a diverse group with a wide range of expertise that includes marketing, finance, accounting, management and more. It is with this team that we will pull together to accomplish the goals of our club this year. It s going to be a great year! We re also very lucky in the fact that Bob Efford has agreed to stay on as our Insurance Chair this year. Bob is instrumental in managing our insurance needs and keeping those expenses under control and our club in compliance. So thank him when you see him at the club. Be sure to attend The Wassail Bowl on this Sunday, December 2 nd. It s always good to see everyone in the Christmas spirit. Speaking of spirits, don t forget to have a cup of the warm Wassail punch and for the kids, warm apple cider. You don t want to miss out. The club is decorated for the season and looks great. And, it s a great opportunity to help others in need. This year we are contributing through the Angel Tree program being managed by St. Mary Anne s Episcopal Church. This is an outreach project designed to help children whose families are in difficulty by providing Christmas gifts to those who would otherwise do without. Our target group is boys aged years old. Gifts should NOT be wrapped. The types of gifts needed are as follows: Balls - football, soccer, baseball; Sports equipment - baseball gloves, bats, etc.; Fishing equip - rods, tackle, etc.; Bath items: AXE brand, body heat brand, etc.; Higher end items: skate boards, scooters, etc. Board games ages 10 and up; Books on popular young adult series: Goosebumps, Twilight, etc.; Books on: fishing, baseball, hiking, fitness, soccer, etc. These are suggestions to jog your memory. Anything a year old boy would like will work. I hope this helps! Lastly, I consider it an honor to serve as your Commodore this year. As your Commodore, I m asking for your input. I m available by phone, or directly if you run into me at the club. Many of you already know, I m approachable and open to suggestions and ideas. I value your input and want to hear what you have to say. So, please contact me if you have something you want to discuss or suggest. See you at the club! Commodore Mark Coffman

6 FROM THE VICE This year s 83 rd Commodore s Ball was a great event. With a drum roll, NERYC is pleased to welcome Commodore Mark at the helm and Lady Diane by his side. With Mark as Commodore and our new BOG, we re looking forward to an awesome year. It was a memorable evening as we danced into the night with popular Keith and Friends. I d like to thank our club members and guests who attended and supported this event. I also would like to thank Suzanne Braun for organizing this event and for all the people who helped. Chef Brendon, April and staff, once again, did a great job. As Vice Commodore, one of my responsibilities is House Committee which means keeping our club looking pristine. I am in the process of seeking a House/Garden Beautification Team. All we need is a few more volunteers to work with my initial recruits who include John Murray and of course my wife Sue. We have lots to do around the club to improve its appearance and clean things up a little. We won t be doing the heavy stuff and we should be able to recruit additional help when needed. Wouldn t it be great to see the place looking awesome again. It can and will with a little effort. So reach out to Sue, John or I and let us know of your interest. We will be meeting early in new year to work out our plans. REMEMBER this weekend is the Wassail Bowl being held on Sunday, December 2 nd from 1-3. Please remember to bring a toy for our annual Christmas giving and if you choose, bring your blue/silver/white and/or nautical ornament to hang on this year s tree. Happy Holidays! FROM THE REAR Well, December is here and your new Bridge and BOG are hard at work getting things ready for a new year at the club. As your Rear Commodore, I am responsible for organizing the club calendar and events that will occur at the club in the coming year including Birthday nights and the 2013 Commodore s Ball. I am pleased to say that this year will be a busy time for our club. Although the exact dates on the calendar are not quite finalized, the events are exciting ones. In December, we have a rockin DJ on the 14 th for Birthday night with live entertainment of some sort on most, if not all, Birthday nights for the rest of the year. The ever popular Three Sheets to the Wind Regatta will most likely take place on January 26 th. We ll be having a Dinner Theater in February and the Dinner Around the World Series continues with a Hawaiian night in March. There will be Oyster Roasts and Crab feasts and auctions, a Pass In Review, a Casino Night, Dock Parties, and much more to keep members busy throughout the year. I will keep you all posted on these activities through the Waterline and via s through Yahoo Groups. Another of my duties is to oversee the operation of the clubs "Ships Store". As many of you know, Dave Brzezowski took over the running of this endeavor in recent months. He has generously agreed to continue and is already working on stocking up the store with new items of interest. The store will be open during the Wassail Bowl, check it out and grab a bargain for yourself or a Christmas gift for someone else. You can also purchase online at: start.jsp PC George and I want to wish everyone a most Happy Holiday season and a safe and prosperous New Year. We look forward to the challenges the New Year will bring serving the club, and know that with the assistance of you, the club members, those challenges will be met with success. Safe boating to all and to all a good night. V/C Rick Hanson R/C Suzanne Braun 6

8 FROM THE FLEET I hope everyone enjoyed their Thanksgiving celebration in November. As your Fleet Captain, I am happy to report that I have represented my position with utmost honor. Cindy, Matthew and I decided to cruise from Baltimore s Inner Harbor to Tilghman Island on Thanksgiving Day. We left Baltimore at 8am for the 40 mile run south and picked up a 6 8 knot breeze out of the NNE just north of the Bay Bridge, enough wind to fly a spinnaker for a good portion of the trip. Sailing was relaxing and the temps were in the mid 50 s. We arrived at 2:30pm at the Tilghman Island Inn and headed over to the restaurant at 4pm for some board game time and a 5 course Thanksgiving Dinner. Overnight our heaters kept us warm and toasty! On Friday morning, we awoke to a serine peaceful sunrise complete with fog. After breakfast, we set off at 10am and caught 7 10 knot winds out of the SSW on our sail north and again set our spinnaker making 6 8 knots under sail. Temperatures were 58 and again made for a very comfortable sail. We certainly hit a wonderful window of sailing opportunity because by the weekend the temps dropped into the 30 s and 40 s with 20 knot winds. If you ever have an opportunity to visit Knapp s Narrows and want to experience an outstanding dinner I would highly recommend the Tilghman Island Inn. Knapp s Narrow is one of our favorite cruising destinations and a dinner there is always on our plans. Speaking of cruising plans for 2013, I wanted to thank you for taking time to complete the survey and for providing inputs to me through good ol fashioned conversation. The results show that 100% of the respondents are interested in local cruises from the club to raft up, fish, swim, BBQ and kayak. And for long distance cruising destination Maryland Yacht Club, Georgetown, Worton Creek, and Middle River received a high number of votes and surprisingly Tangier Island, Soloman s and Herrington Harbor also received a high number votes. I also learned from some investigation on our own to stay away from Tangier Island in the summer because the green heads will attack you relentlessly. Staying at nice marinas also was mentioned and having live music and a dinner like we did in Annapolis is a lot of fun. With your inputs, I ll be finalizing our cruise calendar over the next few weeks. Until then please continue passing along your ideas. There s only 5 months till our sailing season! FROM MEMBERSHIP Do you know someone looking for that perfect gift? Chances are you know friends and neighbors that are scurrying around town looking for that special gift their families will enjoy all year round. What a great time to suggest the gift of membership to NERYC! Invite your friends to try out our restaurant, check out our social calendar on the web, walk around our docks, and picture their children laughing and learning on in our beautiful harbor. A NERYC membership is the gift that keeps on giving! Now that you ve helped your friends, what about you? Are you still missing some little surprises in your gift giving? Why not shop online at our Ships Store! Our Ships Store has dozens and dozens of great choices from polo shirts and hats and jackets to duffel bags and totes in every size, shape and color. What a fun way to support our club and spread the word that our yacht club is the place to be all year round. Go to Better hurry so we can deliver your orders on time for the holidays! See you at the club! Judy Murray Membership Chair Thanks, FC Bob Gamble 8

12 FROM THE RACE COURSE Sailors at NERYC said goodbye to the 2012 season at the Sail Awards Dinner on November 10th. We had a record 91 adults and 30 Juniors in attendance for the festivities which included a slide show, and awards for the Spring, Thursday Night and Fall keelboat racing activities, plus our Junior Sailing program. We also had the opportunity to thank many of our members who help make our Sail Program a success throughout the year. It was a terrific evening to reflect on an eventful season, capped by some lively Karaoke and dancing in the Burgee Lounge. Among the evening s highlights was our Junior Sailing Travel Team finally being able to properly thank Mike and Darlene Hamlin for their most generous donation of a Travel Trailer which has allowed our Juniors to participate in racing activities all over the Chesapeake Bay. The final award of the evening was made by Bryan Whittington - the prestigious Trish Whittington Corinthian Spirit Award - which was presented to IPC Russ Zehnacker. Russ leadership of our Club through a challenging year and the agreement to bring the University of Delaware Sailing Team to NERYC should play an important part in our Club s future success for many years to come. In addition to the season s performance-based awards, a number of special awards were made: Most Improved Keelboat Skipper Joanne Veater Most Enthusiastic Crew Alex Razzook Juniors Most Improved Laser Sailor Rachel Wagner Most Improved Laser Handling Will Sernyak Most Improved Rookie Laser Sailor Matt Gramer Most Improved Opti Sailor Ruben Wahrenberger Most Improved Opti Sailor Runner-up Skylor Sweet Most Improved Rookie Opti Sailor Robbie Shand Most Improved Junior Race Crew Ian Ronald Best All Around Junior Sailor Brendon Wilkins Junior Sailor of the Year Iain Shand "This Is Where I Belong" I hear the wind across the plain A sound so strong - that calls my name It's wild like the river - it's warm like the sun Ya it's here - this is where I belong Under the starry skies - where eagles have flown This place is paradise - it's the place I call home The moon on the mountains The whisper through the trees The waves on the water Let nothing come between this and me Cuz everything I want - is everything that's here And when we're all together - there's nothing to fear And wherever I wander - the one thing I've learned It's to here - I will always...always return Special Thanks to our 2012 Race Committee Boats: Barry & Jenn Lotter Lottery George & Suzanne Braun Varekai Gary & Betsy Denapoli Arrow Jeff Allen Skyring Ginny Somers Tally Ho Robert & Regina Leigh Shore Leigh Bliss Don & Babs Manges Bab s Baby Phil & Joan Gravatt About Time Bill & Josie Dallas El Gaucho Del Mar John & Jan Sergeant Angelica John & Shirley Margan Nautitude Dave & Peg Brzezowski Willow Rose Dan Johnson Intrepid Mike Wagner Program Chair The awards dinner is always a great way to end the season, but rest assured that planning is already underway for another exciting year of sailing activities at NERYC. In closing, I think the lyrics from the last song from the slide presentation is also an appropriate end for this article, and reflects the sentiments of many of our members on a successful boating season. 12
