North East River Yacht Club At The Peake of the Chesapeake Social, Power or Sail, We Have Something For Everyone Member Newsletter AUGUST Commodore s Report Greetings The NERYC Invitational, a very well organized sail race with after party, took place in July 25th. The winds did not cooperate and later the early evening showers showed up. Sharlene and Gill did a great job organizing this event with the help of many members assisting. Thank you all for helping, coming out and supporting this event. By the time you read this, the Past Commodores / Member / New Member dinner (Aug 1 st ) will have taken place. At last count we had over fifty members signed up to enjoy a fabulous buffet dinner and late night dancing. Honoring our Past Commodore s has always been a traditional event and we hope that next year the event will have a better placement on the club calendar. Thanks to Richard Kane for being master of ceremony. Sailing camp just keeps plugging along like a well oiled machine, at last count we had 190 sign-ups. Several adult members have stepped forward to support this program and your efforts are appreciated. If you haven t seen the camp in action, come on down and witness the fleet of sailboats with their multi-colored sails. The kids are having a blast. Fleet Captain Zehnackers mid-summer cruise to Crescent Yacht Club was again blessed by good weather. Unfortunately, we missed the opportunity to try out the new pool at Crescent, as it was still two weeks from being completed. The addition of the pool along with their ever low dockage cost is sure to be on the short list of future weekend cruise destinations. Commodore s cocktail party will be on Sunday 9/6 and DJ Robert Cross will be providing the music. This is a fun destination with a great pool, low slip fees, restaurant and bar. As an added bonus, you get the chance to photograph the famous Kent Narrows drawbridge. One early Monday morning, Mike Hamlin came to the Club with a several truckloads of topsoil. With the assistance of David Ferguson, the three of us offloaded the dirt, which would be later moved to fill in low spots by the new shed. Mike donated the soil. Thanks for allowing us to get your nice truck all dirty. The soil was moved to the shed area as quickly as it arrived through the single handed efforts of Mike Wagner. Meanwhile our committees quietly go about their business of supporting the club. The nominating committee has finished their yearly task of putting together their list of nominees for election. The COLE committee has done their research and reported to the board. The Ships Store is still doing monthly sales on Birthday night and the Fleet Surgeon who had earlier put on CPR/AED programs, continues to monitor the AED on a monthly basis. Every month, the Insurance chair can be found auditing boats on the docks and more often checking documentation in the office. Jr. Sail committee continues to grow a great program that is one of the bright spots for obtaining future new members. There s more happening, but I am limited to one page, Commodore Jon Jon Fowler This summer season is moving at lightning speed and the Labor Day cruise to Kent Island is coming up 9/5 to 9/7.

2 FROM THE VICE FROM THE REAR The Legal Committee (COLE Committee on Loose Ends), Chaired by David Ferguson, has presented a preliminary report to the board and the BOG has unanimously accepted the work of the Committee. The report can be read in last months BOG minutes. The committee has agreed to continue work on verbiage and the concept that will require some amendments to the by-laws to be presented at the Annual Meeting. I want to again thank everyone for their input. Due to the hard work of the grounds and garden committee and the help of a lot of rain this year we have been able to build on the work of the past years and make our grounds even more beautiful. This summer has flown by and Linda and I are starting to prepare for the Wassail Bowl and the New Years Eve Party at the Club. We are looking forward to the last two NERYC cruises, but the frost bite cruise portends the coming winter and definitely the end of the boating season and the 2009 Summer. It has been a great summer for Linda and myself. V/C Roger Hughes WHERE HAS THE SUMMER GONE is what I hear from many of our members as we socialize around the clubhouse and marina. Don t worry, we have many functions remaining this year to keep you entertained and fun times for all. The NERYC Invitational was a great event and will go down as one of the best ever with or without wind, thanks again to Sharlene and Gill. Begin thinking about your offering for the Silent Auction/ Crab Feast scheduled for August 29 th. The auction is open for more then just Honey Do services. You contribution does not have to be gender specific, we will auction whatever you bring that is marketable, even gold chains, weekend condos, dinners, etc. Ginny Somers will be asking for your donations via ginnysomers@verizon.net. As we all know, this is a major fund raiser for the club and helps the general fund as well as the Commodore s Ball. This club has more talented people than one could imagine, your particular ability definitely would be of interest to many, don t hesitate to put it up for auction. Don t forget the Crab Feast; this is the best one on the bay, a great variety of food available for those still holding back from tackling our blue crabs of the Chesapeake. Don t be embarrassed to ask for help if you never had the opportunity to pick a crab, you will be hooked on them once you start. Birthday/Anniversary/New Member night is coming up fast, Friday, August 14 th. It has proven to be the best place to be on a Friday evening to unwind from the hectic week, and yes, bell ringers have started a competition, we welcome others to enter. Members hesitate to leave early afraid of missing one more free beverage of their choice. Of course, those celebrating receive one free drink on the house, and must be used that evening. If you are a new member and would like to participate on a committee, please let me know. After the silent auction, we will be working on the Commodore s Ball and could use additional help. I can be reached at h2ohotel@yahoo.com or phone, Enjoy the Chesapeake. Congratulations Sam & Billy! Past NERYC Princess Samantha Mohr, daughter of members John and Debbie Miller, was married on August 2nd, 2009 in Louisville, KY R/C Joe Reynolds

3 Last and Best Boating Class of the Season! Many club members wish to occasionally update their boating knowledge by taking a boating course every few years. This allows them to revisit Federal, State and Local rules and regulations. For those who may be interested, consider taking the Northeast River Power Squadron s Squadron Boating Course. This course is recognized as one of the best public boating classes. The course includes; safety equipment requirements and its use, an excellent exploration of the rules of the road, lights and sound signals, navigation aids, finding your way, adverse conditions, trailering, water sports safety, PWC, boating courtesy, anchoring, marlinespike, and more. Course materials are $35 for the Squadron Boating Course text, Course CD (great for review), and MapTech CD (functioning practice chart plotter). Additional family members who wish certification are $5.00 each. The text also includes expanded materials on piloting, compass, time, GPS, digital charting, practice cruise plotting. The basic boating course for certification takes place: Saturday, October 24, 2009 from 8:30 AM -12:30 PM - and Sunday, October 25, 2009 from 8:30 AM -1:00 PM (Exam on Sunday) The expanded course certification that includes piloting will take place: Saturday, October 24, 2009 from and Sunday, October 25 from (Exam on Sunday afternoon) Those students who purchase the Squadron Boating Course and take the basic course are entitled to the afternoon course at no charge. Those students who wish to take the afternoon piloting portion only will be required to purchase the course materials at $ Family members are $5.00 additional. To register or for more information, please contact: Bill or June Cooper wilmcoop@comcast.net

4 FROM THE FLEET WOW! August already! Where did our summer go? Those of you who missed our mid-summer cruise to Crescent Yacht Club, missed yet another great outing. 9 boats and 2 couples by land, converged on the Middle River and partook of beautiful weather, good food and drink, and great camaraderie for our fourth cruise of the season. With only two more cruises to go, now is the time to start making plans for our Labor Day Cruise to Kent Island Yacht Club. As is tradition, on Sunday afternoon, (Sept 6th), Commodore Jon Fowler will host the annual Commodores Cocktail Party. This event will take the place of the Fleet Captains happy hour, although the Fleet Captains locker will be open for liquid refreshment. All cruising participants are requested to bring an appetizer to share, and cash,($8/person, $15/couple), for the Captains locker. Slip fees for the weekend are a reasonable $25 per night plus $5 per 30 amp cord. You will need to make your own reservations for this cruise. You can contact Maggie, at the club at or via at maggie.kiyc@atlanticbb.net. Be sure to tell her you are with the NERYC to get the discounted slip rate. After you have made your reservation, PLEASE contact me so I can have an accurate head count for attendance at the commodores party. Elsewhere in this Waterline, is information on a boating class to be held in October by the North East River Power Squadron. As the season winds down, Fall is a great time to refresh our boating knowledge and taking a weekend boating class is a great way to accomplish that. Also coming up in October is our annual membership meeting. One of the most important items to be discussed this year is the findings of the COLE report. This report was sent out to all members as an attachment to the June Board of Governors Minutes. I encourage ALL members to read this report, and if you have questions, PLEASE bring them to a member of the Bridge prior to the meeting. As usual, if you have any questions, comments of suggestions, please contact me. Hope to see everyone at the Labor Day Cruise! 5 5 FROM THE RACE COURSE Invitational 2009 After the disappointment of having to abandon our Invitational Race due to lack of wind, it was good to be able to return to the club and sooth the pain with a rum tent special and great pig roast dinner. Unfortunately we can not control the weather but, together with our excellent banquet staff, we can always put on a good party. Gill and I would like to once again acknowledge and thank all our great sponsors: West Marine; Harken; APS; Walden Rigging, Whitford Land Transfer and Sew Nautical. We would also like to thank John and Susie Sheldrake for providing the luxurious Foxy Lady as signal boat, as well as Roger and Linda Hughes and Bill Dallas for volunteering their boats as Check-in and Mark boats respectively. We also thank the many race committee volunteers, including our own Justine Roecker and chief PRO Brooks Zerkel, who once again travelled from VA to officiate the event. To everyone, including the racers, who were on station and at the ready to make the race a success, both on the water and on the shore, you are all fantastic and we appreciate your dedication and support. Gov Cup Report back Courtesy of Barbi Taylor Despite gale wind warnings and a menacing sky, the weather cleared enough for the 5 NERYC boats to compete in the St. Mary s College of Maryland Governor s Cup Yacht Race, 7/31-8/1. Sailors in the 36th annual running of the overnight race had everything from 20 knots to dead winds It was a fun and fast race until 5am according to reports and all 5 NERYC boats finished extremely well represented in their classes! While Bruce and I didn't compete this year, we couldn't wait to check on-line to review the results and see how the NERYC skippers and crews had faired. Anyone who has ever done this race knows how challenging and grueling it can be! WOW! As far as we know, it is the first time in club history that 2 boats finished FIRST IN THEIR CLASS in this prestigious race! DAILEY TIPTON (Blofish) - FIRST in PHRF A1 (17 boats) BARRY LOTTER (Lottery) - 7th in PHRF A2 (17 boats) RICK HANSON (Born2Run) - FIRST in PHRF B (17 boats) GILL LOUW (First Love) - 7th in PHRF B CHARLES PARIS (Luminous) - 4th in PHRF C&D (18 boats) CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL! Oh, and one other thing...of all the entries (131), an even more impressive result is that Rick placed 5th overall and Dailey placed 10th overall. Double WOW! Especially with the first 4 boats in the overall category going to the AO speed sleds with PHRF ratings in the negative numbers, up to 72 feet in length and with crews of 20! Gill and I echo those sentiments. We all had a great race. First Love reached the turning mark at Point Lookout on the Potomac by 6am, at this juncture the wind disappeared, and it took another 6 grueling hours to cover the last 8-10 miles of the 70 mile course to finish. By all accounts most of the fleet shared our fate, and also had to endure many hours in almost windless conditions, drifting up the Potomac and St Mary s River in order to finish. We are extremely proud of all the NERYC racers. Once again congratulations to everyone, you did our little club at the top of the Bay proud. May these achievements encourage more of our NERYC racers to take up the challenge and participate in this great event next year. Fall Series This past Saturday marked the start of the NERYC Fall Series. Conditions were extremely light and after some time spent untangling one of the competitor boats from the committee boat anchor rode, thanks to Steve Hogan s heroic extrication efforts, racing got underway in what turned out to be a marathon effort for some to make it around the shortened course within the time limit. Some competitors elected to retire but some hardy crews battled it out doggedly to the bitter end with literally minutes to spare. Here is hoping for better breeze the remainder of the Fall. GRF Bay Jam Race Georgetown Racing Fleet s Bay Jam Invitational Race is the next event on the calendar and is scheduled for Saturday August 15th. The race start is off Still Pond, and the course utilizes the standard CBYRA government marks over a distance course, before finishing in the mouth of the Sassafras River. The race is followed by a raft up and party in the Turner Creek Park Pavilion. Late entries can still be submitted. New members, the Montgomery's on their J-24 Hang Nine, are looking for a tow out to the race. If anyone can help, please contact Mike Wagner at michael.wagner7@comcast.net. In order to retain the coveted interclub trophy once again this year, we hope to see a another strong representation from NERYC at Bay jam Please remember to set aside Sept. 12th so that you don t miss the Charlestown Colonial Cup Pursuit Race. This fun race features a staggered, handicap based start, where your position across the finish line dictates your place in the in the race. Even although the season is whizzing by, there is still plenty of racing to be had. See you on the water. Sharlene Wilkins & Gill Louw Sail Race Co-Chairs

There are purple prospective member packets available from April or in the office to help explain our offerings and costs. One last thought. It is important to RETAIN members. 8 8 RELAY FOR LIFE Dear Members and Family, The North East River Yacht Club has been a significant supporter of the American Cancer Society's Relay By The Bay since Relay came to North East 5 years ago. Our team, Cruising For A Cure, has been one of the top fundraisers all 4 years. Josie Dallas and Claudia Ferguson co-captain this year's team and are looking for your support once again. Relay By The Bay will be held September! 8th and!9th in the North East Park so it's time to get our team together to raise money. Last year we raised over $10,000. Josie and Claudia have raised over $ already but we need your help. For those of you who are not familiar with Relay, it is the American Cancer Society's main fundraising activity. The money is used for research, education as well as helping to support folks with cancer and their families. It is a fun- filled overnight (not mandatory) event that celebrates cancer survivors while remembering those we have lost. Many camp overnight, some of us walk all night, others come to watch the opening ceremony or participate in the very moving luminary ceremony. But we all come to enjoy the entertainment that comes with Relay. Cruising For A Cure serves fresh omelets as the sun rises over the North East River to make Relay By The Bay extra special. This is how you can support Cruising For A Cure, our NERYC team. Join by going to and press "join a team". Look for Cruising For A Cure. Registration is free until the end of May. Each team member is asked to raise, donate, or help to raise $ You can just DONATE!!! We, once again, have raffle tickets for a trip to the beautiful Luquillo Sunrise Beach Inn in Puerto Rico. These tickets went fast last year. Only 100 are sold at $25.00 each so call Claudia at ASAP. COME JOIN SUPPORT For more information call Josie Dallas at or Claudia Ferguson at
