2 Commodore s Log My daughter Colette is almost finished with her week of Summer Sailing Camp. It's her 3rd year and she's pretty comfortable with single handing a Bic at this point. Her favorite part of Camp? Capsizing of course! One of the things I'm most proud of about our club is our Summer Sailing Camp. Four years ago it was losing money and not very well attended. This year we're averaging 20 kids per week, employing at least 6 to 7 instructors and turning people away due to lack of space. Who's responsible for this turnaround? Junior Advisor, Program Director Sharon Frey and her husband Randy! Together they have done the following: 1. Created the Summer Sailing Camp Curriculum 2. Created job descriptions for all instructors 3. Created performance evaluations for all instructors 4. Created personnel files for all instructors Commodore Patrick Tregenza 5. Established America Sailing Association affiliation 6. Provided First Aid Training through ASA on site for all instructors 10. Created a dedicated Summer Sailing Facebook Page with photos provided by Sharon each week, accessible to parents 11. Created a Survey Monkey account so that parents and kids can weigh in on what they like and what may need improvement about the camp Most importantly, they are there every day, Monday through Friday, all day, to oversee the day to day implementation of the Camp and to make sure that every aspect is dealt with in a professional manner, as volunteers! Our lead instructor Jacob Paoletti has built on the solid foundation established by last year's lead instructor, Lauren Dykman. He's got the kids doing warm-ups and stretches to start off each morning and is actively training and recruiting the older kids to transition into our High School Racing team. The Youth Sailing Foundation has been instrumental in the procurement of new equipment. They provided a new inflatable dingy, motor and trailer which has been the perfect solution to overseeing the younger kids that sail all day in front of the club. Randy Frey has done a great job in making sure all the sailboats and club support boats are in good working order and the YSF has been there to foot the bill for any and all replacement parts or new equipment. Hats off to the Frey's and instructors Jacob Paoletti, Austin Book, Logan Allen, Matthew Elliott, Thomas Melnick, Levi Matsushima and Dalton Muck for making a huge difference in the lives of so many kids! 7. Implemented daily staff meetings 8. Implemented staff uniforms 9. Established an open interview process whereas all instructor applications are reviewed by a committee of Yacht Club members with Junior Sailing experience About the Cover Photo Eric Baggiolini s Mahalo at Stillwater Cove. Hail and Farewell By Becky Brock Course changes: Monica LaVelle Regular Member to Leave of Absence Larry Nordwick Leave of Absence to reinstatement Bar and Galley by Patricia Nicewander (Bar and Galley Chair) I am happy to announce that MPYC is now compliant with the California Healthy Workplaces, Healthy Families Act of 2014 that requires all employers to provide mandatory Paid Sick Leave for all full and parttime employees. This means that our staff is now eligible for up to 24 hours of paid sick leave per year. Thanks to Jerry Mayo for his diligence in getting all the paper work completed before the July 1, 2015 deadline. We are continuing our search for a Chef. If you know anyone who may be interested, please let me know. We have ads placed on Craig s list and will expand our search to include additional advertisement. We are also still working on replacing the dining room chairs and updates to the Maitre D system to help alleviate bar congestion. As always, your comments and suggestions are welcome. House Rules Members of reciprocal yacht clubs are always welcome; please remember to register in the Club guestbook before using Club facilities. Other guests are encouraged, but must be welcomed to the club by a current member. Membership is easy, and applicants need not be boat owners. 4 Race by John Feeley (Race Chair) Summer breeze Makes me feel fine Blowing through the Jasmine in my mind Summer Breeze Seals and Crofts It s summertime and with it come smiles, sips of wine, pleasant conversations, old memories and great racing. Since I skipped race results last month, I ll start with a catch up. We are up through Sunset Series Race 14 and half way through the season. At the turn the leaders are: A Fleet- Bustin Loose; B Fleet-Moore Please; C Fleet-Ecaroh; and Shields Fleet-Stillwater and Helen tied with five bullets apiece. The Spring PHRF Series was won by: A Fleet-Bustin Loose and Seasaw (tied); B Fleet-Scandalous; and C Fleet-Ecaroh. The Spring ODR Series was won by: Shields Fleet - Rolly and Santana 22 Fleet - Ecaroh. CONGRATS! Just as a reminder I include here section 15 of our Sailing Instructions: 15. SCORING 15.1 The Low Point System, RRS Appendix A, shall be used as modified here: (a) The MPYC 2015 Season Championship standings will be determined after deducting from a boat s score of all Qualifying Series this number of worst scores in a like manner to RRS Appendix A2. Class Number Deducted All one design 3 PHRF 1 for each 6 races (b) No scores may be excluded from a series standing. This changes RRS A2. (c) Scoring for the Sunset Series is based on the number of first place finishes only For races in the PHRF classes the scoring is on the basis of Time-On-Time (TOT). Congrats also go out to Ari and Keeley for winning the Shields and Santana Ladies Day races respectively on 30 May. Question for next Month What is Rule 14 and how is it applied? Answer to last month s questions (I ll spend some time on this one): What is VMG and how do you capture it when racing? Patrick Tregenza s Ecaroh was the C fleet winner in the Spring PHRF series and also winner of the Spring One Design Series in the Santana 22 class. VMG stands for Velocity Made Good, which is the progress that racing boats (or cruising boats) actually make towards their destination, and is the calculated speed along the rhumb line (straight line from starting point to destination). continued page 5 Page 4

5 Race continued The key to winning sailboat races is boat speed so I am told. The difference between winners and losers is typically quite small, often no more than an average of one or two 10ths of a knot in boat speed. Maximizing VMG to the wind yields the best performance in sailboat racing, both upwind and downwind. The trick is to find the optimum-pointing angle that balances speed with distance sailed. One can determine how well one is doing when going to windward or leeward in a race by determining net speed, which is different from speed through the water, due to the angle from the boat's course. That net speed is another description of VMG. Net speed is typically determined in two different ways: VMG to the Mark or VMG upwind/ downwind. I suggest day racers use VMG upwind/ downwind. For VMG upwind I suggest the following: 1. Approximate the laylines to the mark and the associated course cone before the race. 2. Use the cone as your guide because the laylines bound (enclose) the minimum distance to the mark (since sailing outside the laylines is extra distance, and all courses within the laylines are the same distance), and because a layline is always directly to windward as long as one stays within the layline cone. In other words, maximum VMG upwind is the fastest way to the layline, the boundary of the optimum courses to the mark. efficiency increases, thereby increasing speed more than enough to offset the extra distance sailed. Thus there is also a downwind cone, defined by optimum course lines, that's similar to the upwind cone defined by the laylines. When one is jibing inside the downwind cone, a result just like the upwind VMG occurs and one increases net speed or VMG. 2. The optimum course (best VMG) lines bound (enclose) the minimum distance to the leeward mark (since sailing outside these lines is extra distance, and all optimum courses within these lines are the same distance), and because an optimum course (best VMG) line is always directly to leeward as long as we stay within the cone. In other words, maximum VMG downwind is the fastest way to the optimum course (best VMG) line, the boundary of the optimum courses to the mark. 3. Finally, maximize VMG downwind through boat trim as well as a course within the downwind cone. Of course I d like to say I figured this all out myself. Not true! I read many articles and even tried the trigonometry formulas, but felt it best just to pass on some great thoughts from sailors better than I. Please allow me to thank everyone at the Club for their continued support. Come Sail Away 3. Trim, trim and trim for maximum speed given wind and conditions on the course. For VMG downwind I suggest the following: 1. When the objective is directly downwind (dead downwind, or DDW), the temptation is to sail directly for the objective, because it's the shortest distance. Even though a direct course is possible, unless the wind is very strong, a direct DDW course is actually slower than jibing downwind. That's because sails (even the best spinnakers) work poorly DDW. Up to a point, when the boat is sailed higher ("hotter" or more on a reach), sail Scandalous and Calphurnia on day 2 of the Commodore s Regatta, Stillwater Cove. Photo by Greg Cailliet. Page 5

6 Cruising Club by Greg Cailliet (Cruising Club Chair) The Cruising Club had a decent turnout of 11 boats that cruised to Stillwater Cove over the June weekend, again outnumbering the actual racing boats 2 to 1! Eight of the 11 sailed over on Friday night, with others coming over on Saturday morning. And, Eric Baggiolini had a weekend-opening get together Friday night on Mahalo, which also served as my birthday party. What fun! Thanks, Eric, Di, and everyone who came for a festive evening and great start to the weekend! On Saturday morning, there were bloodies aboard Night Eagle, with Marijane and Jason Johnsons fabulous home-made mix along with a veritable breakfast of vegetables and beef jerky included in and on each drink. During the SWC weekend, dinghies were all over the place, having drinks and hors d oeuvres on different boats, including Night Eagle, Shaman, Light enup, Manawahi, & (of course!) Sea Siren. Some of us enjoyed the Beach Club pool as guests of members. And, the BBQ on Saturday night, prepared by Jerry Mayo and his able cooks and crew, was fabulous. Thanks to you all! Before the BBQ, it was fun watching the six racing boats come toward the finish line buoy just outside of Stillwater Cove, and there were some very close finishes.this is especially exciting as Saturday s race was, as usual, a reverse start so the boat finishing first (Bustin Loose by a nose), actually won the race. The racing was quite good with brisk winds on both days. Several of us watched the returning racers as they passed us on the way back to Monterey and the finish. Results will be reported in another Tiller article. On Sunday morning, there was a birthday celebration for Marianne Mangold (two in one weekend!) aboard Night Eagle. On the evening before, their children and grand children all found their way out to Sea Siren during the festivities before the BBQ on the pier. What a beautiful weekend! And, the Cruising Club potluck the week before was quite handy as Dave Morris explained anchoring, especially in Stillwater Cove. This helped several boats who anchored, including Sitara, Tardis, Shaman, and Gitane, to know where to go and what to do, mostly. Others received mooring balls from the capable SWC harbor masters George, Rodger, and Mark. And a hearty thanks once again to Charlie Kurtmen for being such a great host there. We are taking the month of July off, but have potluck meetings scheduled for every second Tuesday of the remaining months. On 11 August, we will discuss person-overboard experiences, drills, and guidelines for example. And, we also have several other cruises scheduled for 2015, with the next official one being the cruise on September, 2015 to the Capitola Art and Wine Festival (13 boats are presently signed up). Other events are scheduled for the rest of the year. Come to the Cruising Club potlucks or contact Greg Cailliet (cailliet@mlml.calstate.edu or ) if you would like more detailed information. Dinghies arrive at Mahalo for festivities during the Commodore s Regatta weekend at Stillwater Cove. Page 6

7 Can You Comanche? by Jacob Paoletti The answer is yes! I had the most wonderful time on the boat Comanche. For those of you who do not know, I participated in an essay competition and was selected by Ken Read, president of North Sails, to come and join the Comanche team as they trained for the transatlantic race. Comanche is a state of the art, all carbon, 100-foot racing mono-hulled sailboat. The owner, Jim Clark, asked Ken Read to help him design this boat to be the fastest monohulled sailboat in the world. Let me tell you I think they got it right! While sailing in 12 knots of breeze, we were easily hitting 19 knots of boat speed! This boat is truly a monster. Despite just being able to be on the boat and experience it under sail, I got to meet the crew and learn what it takes to be a professional sailor. These guys are truly amazing. It was almost as if they were reading each other s minds. All Ken Read would have to do was say in a slightly raised voice that he was going to be gybing in three minutes and the boat was ready in one. Ken, in the same tone would say gybing and this 100-foot monster would begin its turn and everything ran as smooth as a brand new Rolex watch. Also, if something went wrong, nobody yelled. The crew kept a level head while fixing the problem. I learned by watching that this was the way that true professional sailors acted and that I should try to do the same while on any boat that I race. Overall, this trip really opened my mind to the possibilities of sailing professionally. This has made me more focused in finishing my studies so that I can become a professional navigator. Watching Stan Honey, the navigator on Comanche, interact with the computer program showed me I have a long way to go. However, when it comes down to it, I must tell myself that they wear the same sailing shoes I wear and they tie them the same way, so I just have to keep lacing up my shoes and go sailing. Page 7
