So last month I went on and on about how great our Summer Sailing Camp was going and it ended up being...the best year ever. This past weekend we had the annual Fun Regatta and Spaghetti Dinner for the campers and, would you believe, it also was a huge success. Doing an amazing job as usual, Sharon and Randy Frey were the driving force behind this great event. The rest of the Commodore s Log Commodore Patrick Tregenza volunteers were as follows: In the kitchen were Susan Elliott, Kim Muck, Todd Muck, Melissa Dalton, Greg Weisenfeld, Ann Melnick. In the kitchen and on the dock were Sarah Duncan, Paolo Serpa. On the water were JJ Bunn, Patrick Tregenza, David Duncan, Todd and Kim Muck. Instructors on the docks, on the water, and in the club were Matthew Elliott, Jacob Paoletti, Dalton Muck, Thomas Melnick. David Duncan and I took 10 parents out on Race.com to watch their kids race and everyone had a great time. The weather was gorgeous and the kids put on a great show The kids were divided into three fleets: Sharks (beginners), Orcas (advanced beginners), and Dolphins (intermediates). Jacob and team set marks, laid out a course and ran races for Orcas and Dolphins on the water near F-buoy. Sarah helped set up and rig Optis, then hustled back into the kitchen to whip up a delicious spaghetti sauce. Paolo stepped in to help rig, and Sharron and Randy ran fun sail activities and mini-regattas for Shark Fleet off the Club dock. I even roped my wife Diane into making 3 quarts of homemade Caesar dressing. When all was said and done, 39 kids participated in the regatta and fun sail and 150 dinners were served. There was also a lot of interest in the club from parents, and I handed out 3 applications for membership. On a completely different note, a few weeks back we were lucky enough to have a replica of the schooner Page 2 "AMERICA" visit Monterey. Owner/Skipper Troy Sears led a very interesting Power Point presentation on the history of the America's Cup and, in particular, the namesake yacht which he operates. With some helpful publicity from the Monterey Herald, he had a sold-out Tuesday evening sail with many MPYC members on board. Summer Sailing Camp instructors Dalton Muck and Matthew Elliot had the thrill of driving the 140 foot ship through various tacks and jibes with huge smiles on their faces. Finally, I'd like to give a big shout out to Charlie Kurtmen. He's been running the Santanarama over at Stillwater Cove for 25 years plus Although it's a SWYC and not an MPYC event, it still draws a great crowd of Santa Cruz and Monterey Santana 22 owners. This year saw 11 boats with top honors going to Schock Therapy from Santa Cruz and 2nd place going to Charlie himself and his son David. This is one of the most fun regattas I've ever experienced with cocktail parties, barbeques, trophies, silly games, costumes, challenges and yet another great reason to sail a Santana. All in beautiful Carmel Bay. Great job Charlie. 3 Burgee Exchanges by Di and Greg Cailliet While on their July vacation in Europe, Di and Greg Cailliet exchanged MPYC burgees for those of two historical yacht clubs in Plymouth, England. Greg was there to present a keynote address on shark and ray life history at the Fisheries Society of the British Isles annual meeting. But he obviously found the time (in long pants, even) to visit two of their yacht clubs. The first was the Royal Plymouth Corinthian Yacht Club, founded in 1877, on the former site of the Royal Citadel. It has hosted many regattas including the World Series races for the America s Cup in AC45s in This year s AC 45s World Series were held in nearby Portsmouth, England about the same time as our visit, but we could not find the time to get there. We exchanged burgees with Club Supervisor Emma Thomas, who was pleased to also give us their 2015 brochure. Their burgee features a wreathe surrounding an emblem with the St. Edwards Crown at the top. The second was the Royal Western Yacht Club of England, founded even earlier in 1927, and located in Queen Anne s Battery near the National Marine Aquarium, where we had the banquet for the meeting. There, we exchanged burgees with Club Staff Ben Hudson, on behalf of their Commodore Charlie Thompson. This burgee also features the St. Edwards Crown. This is a longestablished tradition that ensures that members of yachting clubs around the world get to know each other and exchange stories as well as burgees. We enjoyed this procedure very much. Upcoming Events Thursday, September 3 Noon - Entertainment Committee Meeting Tuesday, September 8 6PM - Cruisers Potluck Friday-Sunday, September Capitola Art & Wine Festival Friday, September 25 6PM - New Members Night German Theme Dinner in honor of the Porsche Rennsport Reunion at Laguna Seca Save the Date Saturday, October 31 The fabulous Retrospect Band will be playing great dance music for our Halloween party. 4 Race by John Feeley (Race Chair) What a day, what a day, what a bloody great day, What a bloody great day to go sailin ; What a day, what a day, what a bloody great day, What a great day out on the boat The Wolverines My Dad once told me that sailing and racing adds 20 years to one s life. I believe that statement fully. However, given our great club competitors, I m not sure that racing precludes getting a few more grey hairs. We have raced 19 Sunset Races as of this writing and the leaders at present are: A Fleet - Bustin Loose; B Fleet - Moore Please; C Fleet - Ecaroh; and Shields Fleet - Stillwater. The Summer PHRF Series leaders are: A Fleet - Bustin Loose; B Fleet - Scandalous; and C Fleet - Ecaroh. The Summer ODR Series leaders are: Shields - Rolly (with Stillwater one point chasing) and Santa 22 s- Ecaroh. The Shields Fleet held their annual Koenigshofer Regatta on 2 August. Racing conditions were excellent on the Bay with a moderate breeze from the west and two to three foot swells. Three races were run. The final results are: Rolly coming in first; Helen coming in second; and October coming in third among seven Shields. Everyone was close and each competitor s VMG was impressive. I believe the results show that the MPYC and NPS Shields fleets are really getting ramped up for next year s Shields Nationals in Monterey. By the way, if anyone is interested, we are locked into the dates 28 September to 1 October for the Shields Nationals. My best thanks go to the Koenigshofer Regatta PRO Mike Gross and his crew for making this regatta a highly enjoyable and professional event. Finally, the SCYC-MPYC Race has been rescheduled to 12 and 13 SEP. I will post a new racing schedule on the WEB. CONGRATS to everyone Question for next Month How does airflow over a symmetric Spinnaker change from a run mode to a reach mode and what adjustments are required? Answer to last month s questions: A. What is Rule 14 and how is it applied? Rule 14, avoiding contact, is a rule that always applies, anywhere on the racecourse. Rule 14, applies to all boats at all times, whether they re the right-of-way boat or the keep clear boat, and whether they are entitled to room or required to give it. The rule s intended message is, put simply: Sailing is not a contact sport. Rule 14, Avoiding Contact A boat shall avoid contact with another boat if reasonably possible. However, a right-of-way boat or one entitled to room or mark-room (a) need not act to avoid contact until it is clear that the other boat is not keeping clear or giving room or mark-room, and (b) shall be exonerated if she breaks this rule and the contact does not cause damage or injury. Rule 14, Avoiding Contact, first appeared in 1997, the year the entire rulebook was rewritten to provide an improved, simpler and better organized set of rules. Rule 14, applies to all boats at all times, whether they re the right-of-way boat or the keep clear boat, and whether they are entitled to room or required to give it. Rule 14(a) was added to permit the right-of-way boat to hold her course until it becomes clear the other boat is not keeping clear. To quell the complaints, Rule 14(b) was added. continued page 5 Page 4

Konigshofer Regatta by Eric Anderson August 2 nd was a typically beautiful day on the waters on Monterey Bay. Ideal sailing conditions and numerous whale sightings were the backdrop of this year s Konigshofer Regatta. Pakhtun Shah s Team Rolly won this 3 race regatta in very convincing fashion with a series score of 3. Jerry Stratton s Helen 257 came in second, narrowly holding off Dino Pick on October 96. Other Shields competing in this year s event included Meritage 175, Storm 191, and Carol 112. Unable to race due to family commitments, Garth Hobson ensured an appropriate tribute by featuring Ron Baxter aboard Konigshofer s former Shields, Stillwater 103. The RC duties were handled by Mike Gross, John Feeley, Scott Brubaker, Will Ary, Brittany Carlson and Mike Harrell, Sr. visiting from Tampa, Florida. This trophy was originally contested in Stillwater Cove and featured a four race series. The perpetual award was donated by Konigshofer himself. Over the years the logistics of taking our aging fleet over to Stillwater annually has yielded to the holding it on our regular race course. After a 12 year hiatus, the event was revived in The regatta honors one of the truly historic figures in our Shields fleet, west coast sailing, and in California architecture. Konigshofer was a longtime member of MPYC and one of thirteen Founding Members and a former Commodore of the Stillwater Yacht Club. His architectural resume is lengthy, including the design of Bing Crosby s Pebble Beach residence and our own MPYC clubhouse. He was a skilled sailor and a generous soul. There are several current members who fondly offer stories and anecdotes of their interactions with Jon Konigshofer. It is a privilege to continue to honor someone so worthy with this regatta which bears his name. Jon Konigshofer L to R: Larry Gamble, Pakhtun Shah and Chris Gatward. Photo by Jaime Anderson. Race continued Today s Rule 14 has several unique features that set it apart from all other rules in Part 2 of The Racing Rules of Sailing, When Boats Meet. Rule 14 is the only rule with its own special exoneration provision. Under Rule 14(b), whenever you have right of way or are entitled to room for some maneuver, you will be exonerated for breaking Rule 14 if the contact does not cause damage or injury. But don t take this as a license to start colliding with other boats. A boat is considered damaged if its value or usefulness is at all reduced, so even a scratch may be considered damage. Rule 14 has another feature that somewhat reduces its impact. There s no double jeopardy in sailing if you break two or more rules in a single incident, you are only penalized once. Of course, again, I d like to say I figured this all out myself. Not true I just pass on some great thoughts from sailors better than I. Thanks again to everyone at the Club for their continued support. Let s be safe out there Page 5

Gotta Go Ta Abaco Travels with the Tiller by Marianne Mangold 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5 This wasn t a countdown to take off or New Year s Eve but we were reading the water depth in the Sea of Abaco from our 42.3 Beneteau monohaul. The Abaco Islands form a 120 mile-long chain off the Florida coast in the Bahamas and boasts the world s third largest barrier reef. These were just the perfect cruising grounds for us (David & Judy Fisher, Tom & Marianne Mangold) to explore the spectacular sailing destinations offering clear turquoise waters, secluded pristine beaches, historical colonial villages, funky beach bars, sand bars, reefs and very shallow waters. Sailing on a beam reach at 8 knots with a 30 knot tropical breeze in crystal clear waters may sound like a Jimmy Buffett lyric but that s how our week long journey began. By the end of the week, David admits, This was the longest time I ve sailed this fast in shallow water really fun Greg and Di Cailliet on a recent trip to Paris. Most mornings we awoke to sunny skies then had to decide if we should set our course for snorkeling, fishing, beachcombing or finding the best live music for that day. On Sunday, we chose the latter because the famous Nipper s Beach Party BBQ with music and dancing atop a sand dune overlooking a magnificent seven-mile-long white beach was the perfect choice as was where we were anchored in the protected cove aptly called Fishers Bay. The Bahamian people were as warm as the weather and very friendly, but our best friend was the GPS because without the knowledge of these waters, going aground could be a deadly daily habit like drinking rum punches. I could only imagine the early European ships believing they were in deep waters far from shore then suddenly crashing onto the reef. That explains why the British loyalist at Hope Town settlement strongly objected to the construction of the candy cane stripe lighthouse, because they had profited by salvaging from the unfortunate wrecks for many years. Today s sailors will find that the Abacos offer protected harbors, secluded coves, picturesque bays and full service marinas where anchorage and mooring balls can be picked up as easily as a local girl at a beach bar. L to R: David & Judy Fisher, Marianne & Tom Mangold Page 6 Whether you are tipsy at the Tipsy Seagull, grabbed at Grabbers Bar, nipping at Nippers or jibbing at the Jib Room my advice to you: Gotta Go Ta Abaco.

Shields Nationals by Garth Hobson Shields Nationals on Monterey Bay for the first time since 1984 At last month s national committee meeting the Officers of the Shields Class Sailing Association voted to accept our proposed dates for Shields Nationals during the last week of September As a fleet we have been working towards these dates for a number of years, starting back in 2005 when Jerry Stratton bought all the Shields owned by the Naval Postgraduate School Foundation. A memorandum of understanding was signed with NPSSA and Shields Fleet 7 to keep that fleet alive on Monterey Bay. After those four boats were sold to private owners, Jerry did not stop there. He went down south and bought five Shields from UC Irvine back in This brought the number of boats up to 13 on Monterey Bay, which gave us the opportunity to propose hosting Nationals here once again Early in 2014 my proposal was accepted for next year and now we finally have a date towards which we are working to make this event a success. A Shields Nationals 2016 Organizing Committee was established earlier this year, which I am chairing. We have the enthusiastic help of the following fleet members and their respective responsibilities; Eric Anderson Sponsorship, Jerry Stratton Trophies, Dave Brock Housing, Juli Alexander Entertainment, John Feeley Race Committee, Jaime Anderson Publicity, Bob Furney Boat Measurements, Becky Brock Apparel, Lino Belli Hospitality, Eric Digman Boat Maintenance, Ashley Hobson Website and Rak Kumar Treasurer. Currently we are about a third of our way towards our goal for sponsorship, hence we need club members help. If you would like to sponsor the event or know of someone or organizations who may be interested in sponsoring the first Shields Nationals in the new Millennium, talk to Eric Anderson or one of his sub committee members James Collins or Luis Alvarez. Our levels of sponsorship are: Victory Sponsor $5,000 Commodore Sponsor $2,500 Platinum Sponsor $1,500 Gold Sponsor $1,000 Silver Sponsor $500 Bronze Sponsor $250 Thank you Commodore Tregenza for being our first corporate sponsor The next most important need will be for housing. We would like to provide accommodation for all competitors. Traditionally this type of hospitality is always offered at Shields Nationals. The preference would be that members offer to house a full crew of five as this makes the logistics of getting the crew to their boats much easier. Our expectation is that a half dozen boats will be brought in from out of town, so competitors will be arriving the weekend before if not the week before to get acclimatized to our sailing conditions. In 2016 the practice race day will be Wednesday, September 28 th, followed by racing on Thursday through Saturday on Sept 29 th to October 1 st. Becky Brock and her apparel sub committee of Ashley Hobson and David Peartree have come up with a fantastic logo for the event and Ashley has been working hard on setting up a website; We will be using this to promote the event, attract new sponsors, display the logos of sponsors who have made donations and to sell merchandise. Additionally the website will host the notice of race, competitor signups, entry lists and results. Once again the last time Shields Nationals was hosted by MPYC was in 1984 and those of us who have been racing in the class for many years since then have been talking about how nice it would be to host Nationals again on the pristine waters of the Monterey bay. Late breaking news Our Eric Anderson is President Elect for the Shields Class Sailing Association. The slate will be voted on at our Annual Meeting this September before Nationals in Newport, RI. 8 TransPac 2015 by Betsy Jeffers Lucky Duck Places 3rd in Division 5 The last few months I have been reporting on Dave MacEwen s Lucky Duck and their 2015 TransPac goal. On Thursday, July 16 th, I was fortunate enough to be in Long Beach for their start Prior to the The start. race, Jenny MacEwen asked each crew member for their personal favorite dish, which she prepared and packaged in frozen boilable bags. The last minute items completed, I knew that not only the boat was ready, but also the crew was ready. They looked happy and confident as they motored out to the starting line. I had a beautiful view from Pt. Fermin Lighthouse Park watching all the boats maneuver for their position on the line. Lucky Duck had a perfect start However, on this day, the Wind Gods were not in favor of a windy race as cited in the Duck s blog of the first few days of racing sailing from lily pad to lily pad, as we hop scotch from one patch of wind to another in 2 to 6 knots of breeze. Not the conditions one hopes for at the start of the TransPac. The winds this year took all of the fleets on a more northerly course into the location of the Pacific High and the Pacific Ocean gyre, better known as the Garbage Patch where the crew said they saw buckets, tubs, laundry baskets, fishing floats of various sizes and mats of fishing lines; disturbing The good news is that The Ocean Cleanup is partnering with the TransPac. At least twenty-five returning boats will participate in a study to measure the amount (total mass) of plastic pollution in the Garbage Patch. The findings from the boats will be the first step of many in the fight against plastic pollution, and will assist in the largest cleanup in history. I will report what the Lucky Duck s findings were when they return. Page 8 I have followed this race for years, and this year it was like watching a long horse race between the top four boats in the 5 th division continually swapping positions. According to the boat s blog, it was not until day 8 until they had mild showers and squalls and reported trade winds in the 24-knot range though they were generally sailing in 17 to 20 knots on a broad reach. They did not report being able to sail in shirts and shorts at night until the 9 th day. Their daily blog was hilarious. They started naming the different watches does anyone remember the Gummers and Teethers regattas? They had several Q&A s, for example What is it like to sail continuously? You take your sunglasses off at night Alternatively, It is just like sailing in the daytime but its dark and I love this one asked of Robin for steering advice sail to the wet spot. After a long 2,220 (2,370+ actual miles sailed) nautical mile race, the top four boats finished within 63 minutes of each other. The corrected times put Allure, in first place followed closely by Horizon in second with Lucky Duck in third place (11:12:50:56). After a big celebration at the finish, Robin and I spent the rest of our time relaxing in Kailua in a cottage by the beach swimming, beach combing and drinking rum drinks on the lanai Congratulations to Lucky Duck and crew, Dave MacEwen, Robin Jeffers, Brendan Bradley, Pete McCormick, James Clappier, Randy, Tony Karl, and John. You should be proud Aloha. Picking up the hardware.

Carnaval s Summer by Bill Keller We've had a fun summer on Carnaval mixing buoy racing in the MPYC PHRF Series with a couple of ocean races out of San Francisco Bay. The first was the crewed Farallone Race -- a 52 miler around the rock pile and back to the StFYC start/finish line. It's a fun race that brings back memories of the Año Nuevo Race. I can't believe we used to sail from Monterey up to Año Nuevo and back in Santana 22s, Islander Bahamas, and the like. This year's Farallones Race was tactically challenging as the standard westerly never showed up. Instead the wind oscillated from the southwest to the northwest but never more than 15 knots true. We were fortunate to play a majority of the shifts correctly with the help of our navigator, Thomas Melnick, a high school sailor who was also one of our sailing camp instructors. From his smartphone, he brought up the NOAA webpage for data collecting buoys and we used one of them to give us a good read on the wind conditions. Carnaval rounded the rock pile well ahead in her division and with the new masthead spinnakers, we had a nice sail back to the finish line. Carnaval also sailed in the Spinnaker Cup and had a great time. Our middle of the pack finish did little to mar an otherwise beautiful day on the ocean. A high point for all on board was sailing by a pod of Humpback whales that were breaching then belly flopping. We learned later that the belly flopping was most likely males trying make Carnaval sailing out of the Golden Gate in the Spinnaker Cup. a good impression with the lady whales. The Carnaval crew is deciding what other out-of-town racing we want to take on next. On our short list is racing the Windjammers -- SF Bay to Santa Cruz -- and participating in the Big Brother / Big Sister fundraiser regatta in Santa Cruz. Also, I want to give props to Scott Krivanek who has been a huge help putting our crew together. Bar and Galley by Patricia Nicewander (Bar and Galley Chair) We are coming to closure on hiring a new chef, replacing the dining room chairs and updates to the Maitre D system to help alleviate bar congestion. I am hopeful that my next report will include the results of these efforts. At our last Bar and Galley Committee meeting, we discussed procedures to enhance your dining experience. As you may have noticed, your bill now comes with a patron comment card. Your feedback will help us maintain and enhance your dining experience. We also started, with this Tiller edition, a Dining Room Etiquette section that includes suggestions to members on how they can help maintain a good dining atmosphere. Finally, please notice that as you are seated in the dining room, your server will ask if you would like anything from the bar. This is for your convenience, and to get bar items, served in the dining room, billed to the galley for accounting purposes. Dining Room Etiquette When the dining room is crowded, please free up your table after you finish your meal. After dinner cocktails are available in the bar until closing. Page 9

29er Nationals by Mark Chandler Photo by John Leibenberg. The 29er Nationals were hosted by the Richmond YC in July, attracting teams from all over the US and Canada. A few days of practice with my daughter, Kate got most of the kinks worked out; but as our first regatta, it was akin to heading for Laguna Seca with a learner s permit. The 29er is a two person skiff that is a foot longer and 50 lbs heavier then a Laser with twice the sail area. This boat demands your attention at all times. Everything happens quickly until you are swimming. At starts, the boats creep up the line until seconds before the gun, when the pack accelerates, violently. Poor timing leaves you watching transoms within seconds. A good start has you holding a lane by keeping the boat in the correct mode, which is truly a team effort. In a reversal from normal boats, the crew plays the mainsheet, which has no cleat, since it is constantly trimmed. The skipper plays the single, auto-tacking jib sheet in the larger puffs/waves while giving thanks for the 4:1 purchase. When done correctly, the 29er sails flat upwind, powering through the waves at 5 to 7 knots. Ducking a starboard tack boat is done early, with the 29er accelerating quickly to double digit speeds on a close reach. After rounding the weather mark, Kate would jump into the boat to pull the spinnaker halyard, which also extends the pole from the bow, as the sail comes out of the tube behind the jib. All of our races had enough wind to keep the boat planing while she did this, so when she got back on the trap while filling the kite, we would just launch into hyperspace. While trimming the sheets, we looked for the flat spots, since waves slow you down as you skip over them at speeds in the high teens. Having practiced this in Monterey, we could keep the boat upright through most of the straight line running, only stuffing the bow under a couple of times. Gybing in the steep, shallow water wind waves was a different story and caused us to miss finishing within the ten minute class mandated time window, on several races. Safety boats were always standing by while we got the mast pointed toward the sky, sometimes with sticky mud coating the very top of the mainsail. Nothing ever broke and other than some bruising, we survived to fight on. Deep sleep was the norm after three or four races a day The teams sailing at the top of the fleet were a pleasure to watch, as they raced around the course, making it look so easy. Lots of practice is required to sail that well in high winds, but the boats are very rewarding in anything over six knots, so getting motivated to go out is not an issue. Our family is hooked on skiff sailing and will be promoting it at MPYC. Kate will team up with kids her age in the future, but I will never forget sailing this first 29er regatta as a father/daughter team. 11 Santanarama by Charlie Kurtmen There were 11 Santana 22s in this year s Santanarama. Schock Treatment (Brigit Binko from Santa Cruz Yacht Club) won first place, Leprechaun (Charlie Kurtmen) was second, Ecaroh (Patrick Tregenza) was third and Tickle (Jeff Carder) was fourth. Winners of the Open Sails race were Schock Treatment first, Tickle second, and Leprechaun third. Race committee was Dick Clark with help from Joan Wood, Candy Winterbotham, Judy Clark, Parker Wood and Bobbette Bradley. A regatta party was held at Charlie's house Friday evening for the racers and their crews. There was a BBQ on the pier for the racers and their crews on Saturday after the races and trophy presentation was at the Beach Club Sunday after the open race. Photos by Dave Gellatly Page 11
