2 Commodore s Log This is it, friends My year as Commodore is nearing its end, and it s a bit unbelievable that an entire year has passed As I reflect on this past year, I can honestly say that it has been a pleasure to serve as your Commodore, and I have, overall, enjoyed the experience. Together, we have accomplished so much this year And, moreover, I realize how many more projects there are to complete, and how many more adventures there are to have. Commodore David Duncan Sailing forward into 2017, I want to encourage all of the membership to be involved in our Club. The Club expansion will still be in the forefront, and there will be many associated projects for all members to participate in. The racing, cruising, and boating groups will be ready for action, and our social members will be ready for some fun activities. Be part of it As I turn the helm over to the new Commodore, I know that it will continue to be smooth sailing with Betsy Jeffers and crew. Thank you for all of your support See you on the water David Duncan Commodore About the Cover Photo The Perry Cup. Article on page 4. Photo by Don Hoover. 4 Perry Cup by Paxton Davis We had 14 mercs again. Four did not attend from the first weekend, but four different competitors entered. The sun was out bright and the breeze was north-west at about 8-10 knots. There was a swell, but not much, otherwise a pretty smooth sea. There were three races scheduled and all started with a twice around course, finishing downwind. There was no whale show on this day. Race one proved that old adage in Monterey, go left as you might get a little lift off the shore going to the mark. Stay away from lighter winds and some chop. Dave West and Chris Krueger got the start, off to the left and were never headed. Kate Conway and Doug Baird followed holding off Mark and Liz Chandler. Jim Bradley and Maryan Gonnervan were fourth with Chris Davis and Hal McCormack placing fifth. This was Chris s best finish with his newly purchased merc. Race two was more of the same conditions. However going downwind, the shore side seem to work better, but slight shifts could make a difference. Pax Davis and Ann McCormack were lucky by going to the middle on the first downwind leg catching up to Conway as they went inshore. Conway went to the middle on the run to the finish, Davis went to the shore and won by a couple of feet. West was third. Dave Morris and Jared January placed fourth and Chandler was fifth. The McCormacks as crew, were sharing their expertise with the Davis mercs. Race three had the wind beginning to weaken. Morris got the start and had to hold off Conway on the run as the course was shortened. West was third followed by Bradley. Chandler placed fifth. Dick Clark put on a nice event with the help of wife Judy, Chip and Joan Wood, Patti and Jim Womble with their powerboat TOOT. Don Hoover did a very good job placing the marks. Monterey boats include: Kate Conway and Doug Baird Dave Morris and Jared January Mark and Liz Chandler Tim Cordrey and crew from CSUMB Steve Kraft and Allen Chaffin John Mowry and Jacob Paoletti Photo by Judy Clark. 6 Juniors MPYC Juniors Rock the Fall Stevenson Regatta by Giacomo Paoletti (Varsity Head Coach) and Matthew Elliott (Assistant Varsity/JV Coach) MPYC Juniors competed against Stevenson School and Santa Cruz YC on November 12 at the Fall Stevenson Junior Regatta. Seventeen boats jockeyed for position on the starting line at this local regatta. It was great to see so many FJs out on the water Race Director Jack McAleer set challenging short courses so the sailors could get in the most possible races during the afternoon s competition. Our junior sailors were tested through a perfect range of conditions which included light air for the first races, and ended with heavier air in the afternoon with gusts up to 18 knots. Even with stiff competition, significant current, and ever changing wind, MPYC s Juniors did well Jessie Crump, and Kate Aldridge (Santa Catalina) finished third, Laura Vetter (Junipero Serra School) and Hailey Boe (Santa Catalina) finished fourth, Finn Stout (MHS) and Lily Robnett (Junipero Serra) were 11 th, Jack Hays (CHS) and Gabriel Gargiulo (Santa Catalina) placed 13 th, Pierce Nelson (All Saint s) and Reagan Dalton (Junipero Serra) placed 14 th. Abigail Romero and Sarah Stoker (Santa Catalina) took the SSAT that morning and sailed out after noon just to get in the practice and support the team Kate Chandler, sailing with the Santa Cruz YC team, took second place Coach Levi Matsushima discussing roll tacks before Varsity sailing practice. Photo by Sharron Frey. All of our team s sailors performed exceptionally well for their experience levels, this being only the second regatta for some, and the first time skippering in a regatta for several others Overall, an outstanding performance from everyone and, with our largest Varsity team in recent history, we see great things in the future. We are very proud of our junior sailors and cannot wait to see what there is to come from this young team Stevenson Regatta starting line. Photo by Liz Chandler. Junior Sailing Coaches Jacob Paoletti and Austin Book demonstrate roll tacks to the Varsity Sailing Team at a recent practice. Photo by Martisa Light. Page 6
