1 The TILLER YEAR 54 ISSUE TWO MONTEREY PENINSULA YACHT CLUB FEBRUARY 2006 New Year s Eve Party a Resounding Success Meryle Sachs The 5 th almost annual 2005 New Year s Eve party, co-hosted by the Monterey Ski and Social Club, was by all reports the best New Year s Eve party we ve held. On Saturday morning, December 31 st 2005, it was rainy, windy and cold. And yet, at 10:30 am nine dedicated ski clubbers showed up at the Yacht club to help me decorate for the New Year s Eve party to begin at 7 pm that evening. The weather was so bad we wondered if anyone would come to the party. In three hours this amazing team arranged five dozen roses, draped 200 feet of silver garland on the rafters, strung 400 feet of sparkling lights the length and breadth of the club, and blew up 200 black and silver helium balloons with silver curling ribbon tied to each one, creating a wonderful ambiance. By then, mercifully, the sun was out. What a grand time we all had, many in tuxedos and formal dresses. The band played for almost 5 hours with few and short breaks. The dance floor was full all night, and our gracious Yacht Club staff kept bringing trays of food and more food, party favors and champagne at midnight, performing heroically even though some of them were not feeling well. For weeks afterward people raved about the food, the decorations, and especially the band. Dan Thacker assembled a masterful group of musicians including our local Don Pendergrass on keyboards, who added greatly to the quartet. Dan played Continued on page 2 COMMODORE S LOG Garth Hobson Last month I wrote how honored I was to serve you, this month I want to say how proud I am of our club members. Last night we had a dinner and the S/V "Allure" cruise to the North West presentation by Chuck Jacobson. This was also a junior fundraiser, which raised more than half the amount we need to purchase a new motor for the Junior s inflatable. Chuck was also honored with the 2005 Cruising Award, which Don Hoover presented to him after the slideshow. Thanks to Don for organizing this successful evening. Sharon Halvorson has kindly offered to organize a few more of these events. But I m getting ahead of myself! At the January board meeting we received further good news, our Chef Jose Rosa will be staying with us for a little longer and maybe indefinitely. Lets keep our fingers crossed that he stays and continues preparing great meals for us. Jerry Mayo also needs a special thank you for taking care of a busy Holiday season with a minimal number of staff. Watching our juniors sail in Alamitos Bay, during the Rose Bowl Regatta, also made me very proud of them. It is encouraging to see Continued on page 2

2 Continued from page 1 Commodore s how excited they are to compete in such a large regatta. Ron Baxter, our able Race Chair has sent out race packets for this year with the schedule, and I cannot wait for the season to start. Race Committee training will take place on Feb. 18 th followed by a Kick-Off party to recruit new crew. So if you know of anyone who would like to crew, please invite them to attend this event. For the romantics out there, please plan to come and have dinner at the club on Wed. Feb 15 th and enjoy a musical treat with your Valentine s dinner. A few more thank you s are in order before I sign-off. Thank you to Lauren Hobson who helped me install the new non-skid on the ramp down to the dock, to David Duncan who is looking into installing a light to illuminate our flag and Donna Womble who is taking the lead in revising the yacht club s flyer. Ron Baxter has also installed new blocks on the Website Home page for Announcements, Upcoming Social Events and Race Events, which we will endeavor to keep up to date. So please check that site for the latest information. Continued from page 1 New Year s drums and sang, and people would ask Is that Dan singing? He was really impressive. Our guests included 38 members from the Yacht club and 31 members from the ski club. This plus the band, dining room, kitchen, and bar staff provided a full house. Thank you to everyone who attended this party, because it is all of you wonderful socialites and dancers who make this party a success. Without the guests, there would be no party. Special thanks to our fabulous club manager, Jerry Mayo, and to the following staff who gave up their own New Year s Eve to graciously serve our guests: Samuel Bonilla, Josefa Guillen and Jose Rosa in the kitchen, Rowena Mayo and Donna Pieri in the dining room, and Stephanie Hare and Bobby Kausin in the bar. 3 UNCORKED Jerry Stratton February is upon us and racing season is just around the next mark, assuming of course that we're using marks this year. Rest assured though, we are having the 2006 Winemaker's Dinner Series, and what a series it will be. I have secured Elyse winery from Napa for our first evening on April 1 and Graff Family Vineyards has committed to June 10. Joel Burnstein of Marilyn Remark and I are still locking in a date for that dinner but we will have the formal announcement out to you by early February. With small wineries timing is critical as the harvest takes priority! Over a glass (or two) of Joel's great Grenache the other night we talked about his busy schedule and how he balances life with grapes! Bottom line: Mother Nature is a Dictator! The good news is that Joel says that the 2005 harvest has produced THE BEST wines he has ever made. WOW! Given Joel's track record of two "best of show" awards at the Los Angeles International Wine Competition in the past 10 years, that's a mouthful. Do not miss this dinner!!! Ms. Juli, Brad and I will kick off the 2006 wine tasting Friday's with a great selection for you to vote on- on Friday, February 17. Be there and bring a friend! Our great manager, Jerry Mayo, has worked with our chef Jose to keep him with us and that's great news. We have not finalized the deal yet, but it looks good. The food we have been serving from our galley has appealed to all- and we want to continue to best serve our members. The YC is looking cleaner but we still have a ways to go. The new cleaning contractor is doing well and will further improve our Clubhouse. 6 The Long Beach Rose Bowl Regatta Jessica Hobson The juniors were finally able to show off their new FJ s after about a year of fundraising at the Rose Bowl regatta in Long Beach January 7 th and 8 th. The Pacific Grove and Salinas teams drove down, through rush hour traffic on Friday, to compete. Despite light winds, around three to six knots, the weather was significantly better than last year s rainstorms. For Pacific Grove High, Cole Davis and Ashley Hobson composed the A team and Keely Scates and Martha Davis made up the B team. Brian Hoover and Kevin Dunaven sailed as the A team and Thom Smith and Amy Omlansky were the B team for Salinas. Both teams sailed in the silver division. Cole and Ashley placed fourth in their division and Keely and Martha placed thirteenth. With both of these great results, Pacific Grove placed fourth overall. Brian and Kevin placed seventh in the A division with a first place in one of the races and Thom and Amy were eighteenth in their division. Together, the Salinas teams placed twelfth overall. Shelley Caplan flew down to Long Beach to coach and support her teams. The trip, however, was not all work. The Hobson s introduced South African food to the sailors and their families when they all went to the Springbok Bar. At the rugbythemed sports bar the group enjoyed South African signature dishes and all enjoyed the food and themselves. The weekend proved eventful with the great sailing, food and fun. Ruth Kalmbach member number 81L, died January 10 th at CHOMP. We are the friendly family club we are today, in part, because of Ruth and her husband, Sydney. Sydney sailed his Santana 22, Happy Proton, and was always happy to take our Juniors along on the races. Ruth can be remembered for her Annual Christmas Cookie Party. They enjoyed the Club and we enjoyed them. More recently Ruth was seen coming to the club with her caretaker, Sandra. Right up to the end Ruth loved to dress up and come to the Club! 7 Resignations accepted at the January 19 th Board meeting. Bob Walthour Bruno Sala Kalev Sepp Kristin Garrott The Board has made some changes to some of our Member numbering system. No changes to Regular membership Numbers. Juniors will be 9000 series numbers. (This will be phased in over the summer) These numbers are in our system from 8 to 18 years old. Our Juniors are young people who are 18 years or younger and still in high school. This group doses not have access to the Club unless we have an adult on the premises responsible for them. A Junior wishing to remain with the Club when his membership expires must apply for an Intermediated Membership. It is not an automatic membership.. Intermediate members under 21 will be 8000 series numbers (In effect) These are our young people just out of high school and too young to legally have access to the Club on their own. They may only have access to the club during regular hours or when accompied by an Adult Member. Intermediates members 21 and over will be 7000 series. Numbers. (In effect) The are members between the age of 21 to 25. They have all of the privileges of the club except to vote or hold office. The Intermediate membership was established to help our young people become Regular members by assisting them with their initiation fee when they become 25. A Junior must apply for Intermediate membership when the Junior membership expires. An Intermediate member must apply for Regular membership upon turning 25. At that time he shall request a conversion fee of intermediated dues paid to off set the Initiation fee of the Regular membership application. Military Members will be 6000 series. Numbers. (Phased in over the next year) This program was developed to bring the active duty military into our membership. They must be over 21, and station at one of our Peninsula military establishments. The benefit is a waiver of the initiation fee for three years. This membership has all of the privileges of the Club except to hold office or vote. Crew will be 5000 series numbers. (Phased in over the next year) This membership was developed to give people who Crew for our Regular members in our Club series races, limited access to the Club. It is a one time, one year membership. The application fee with this membership can be applied to a regular membership initiation fee if done within the first 90 days of membership. Only Regular Members may change to a Non-Resident (D) or an Inactive Member (A) status. If you ever have as question about memberships drop me an at membership@mpyc.org. Or write me at the Club.
