2 Commodore s Log Greetings What a great birthday party It was wonderful to see so many of you come out to celebrate our 64 years. Thanks to all for the fabulous food, Kit Ruck for the flowers, Julie Alexander for the lovely music, and Jerry Mayo and our wonderful staff that made the afternoon a huge success. Commodore Betsy Jeffers Another fun event was the Spinnaker Cup part of the California Offshore Race Week. Sharron Frey did a terrific job coordinating all of the volunteers and pulling off a fantastic event. I received many compliments from the participants which is always rewarding. We can t pull off events like this without all of the volunteers, so thank you Over the last several months we have worked on securing the loan for the club enhancement remodel. Thanks to the assistance of Art Sutton, Dave Blaskovich, Jeff Pulford and the Construction Oversight Committee we jumped through all of the hoops and I am happy to say, the loan is in place, finally. Pardon the Dust: In case you haven t noticed, construction has started. We will try to keep you updated on the different phases of construction, and will work as best as we can to keep disruption to the clubhouse minimal. Key updates or disruption notifications will be included in the weekly e-blast along with articles in the Tiller. If you ever have a question, please feel free to contact Jerry Mayo or me, as there may be times when that private party you wanted to book just may not work out with the construction timeline. Keep an eye out for the Membership Drive that will be running through the end of construction. This is a great way to nudge a friend that may be on the fence about joining MPYC. We have a busy next few months, Summer Sailing Camp, Mercury Nationals and the Entertainment Committee has been busy planning some fun things. More on all of this as we head into summer. Hope to see you at the club or sailing on the bay ~Betsy ASA Licensing Classes ASA licensing classes being offered by Charlie Kurtmen include BASIC KEELBOAT, COASTAL CRUISING, and BAREBOAT CRUISING. All books, logbook, and testing are included for each class, and testing dates will be outlined on June 22. Please confirm with Sarah Duncan if you wish to take one of the classes. 3 Uncorked by Jerry Stratton Enjoy a summer wine on the deck Try one of our dry Rosés or a mellow Merlot We have received such rave reviews on the Murphy Goode Red Blend that we will make it our House Red The quality is amazing and the price is lower than you would guess. Try it soon On the premium wine level, we continue to pour A II from Alpha Omega by the bottle. This is an extraordinary wine that has significant similarities to the AO benchmark Red Blend which sells at $150 a bottle. We unfortunately ran out on Spinnaker Cup weekend but I quickly ordered six 6-packs and promise you that we will not run out again I just tasted the latest Mid Life Crisis Petite Syrah and is it ever good This wine is an amazing improvement from the previous vintage and I expect the winemaker changed his source vineyard to make that happen. We ll bring it in very soon (after our manager completes the end of month inventory) so be on the watch for it. This wine is huge with deep color and a great mid-palette and strong finish but it avoids the typical jammy flavors often found in Petites and many Syrahs. Pricing is great too at $6 per glass We are working on dates for our next winemaker s dinner - stay tuned for the announcement and don t miss this one See you at the Club Save the Dates Saturday, October 28 Halloween Party, music by Retrospect band Sunday, December 31 New Years Eve Party, music by Retrospect band Upcoming Events Thursday, June 22 6PM - ASA Licensing Class Opening Meeting at MPYC Thursday, July 6 6PM - Entertainment Committee Meeting Monday, July 10 6PM - Book Club Potluck at MPYC This month s book: The Curve of Time by M. Wiley Blanchett Tuesday, July 11 6PM - Cruisers Potluck Saturday, August 5 Lip Sync and Karaoke Night Regular Schedule Dinner is served every Wednesday and Friday evening at 6:00, bar open 5:30. Lunch is served every Thursday from 11:30AM until 1:30PM. The MPYC Board of Directors meets every third Thursday of the month at 7:00PM. Remember to check the online calendar for updates. House Rules Members of reciprocal yacht clubs are always welcome; please remember to register in the Club guestbook before using Club facilities. Other guests are encouraged, but must be welcomed to the club by a current member. Membership is easy, and applicants need not be boat owners. 4 Race by David Brock, Race Chair It may not be summer yet, but as far as the racing season is concerned, spring is over. Congratulations to all the participants who made it out to race in these blustery and very challenging conditions. Given such a windy environment, I m sure many stories will be told and retold for many, many years. Probably the most notable story will be made on the Moore 24 Snafu that sailed the second leg of the California Coastal Cup, which was preceded by the Spinnaker Cup (kudos to Sharron Frey for a successful event). Snafu crew required Coast Guard assistance when their mast broke and had to be airlifted out just off the Big Sur Coast. Their story made a social media buzz, and the last time I checked, they had close to 10,000 hits on Facebook. Speaking of masts breaking, uhemm, one of the best Shields sailors in history, had the most unfortunate encounter with a corroded swedge on a shroud that resulted in a mast failure. In a formidable attempt to prevent further catastrophic failures, a mass was sent out to all the skippers of the fleet to be mindful of such weak links that require such minute, yet often overlooked, attention to detail. (Note to self: if I can t sell my boat and I want to make a large insurance claim, don t rinse the salt water off the swedge and hope for the worst). The Summer racing Season has begun in Monterey and thoughts of warm nights with the gentle zephyr of a breeze will NOT be on my mind. What we have coming to us, folks, is a long, cold, summer. Bust out the fowlies and trench coats as I predict (well, the Farmer s Almanac should take the credit) you ll need all the warmth you can get. But will it be windy? I don t know...we ll just have to see. We re all looking forward to Summer Sailing Camp and I know that the Freys will continue to provide our future sailors (my kids included) with the skills and inspiration that they need to succeed. Towards the end of Summer, also look forward to the Friday Family Fun Series on dinghies. For four weeks, every Friday, we will be having kids, parents, singles, doubles, whatever out on these small boats racing, just for fun, with prizes waiting for them back at the club. I can t wait, because it s going to be so much fun Finally, this summer, we are resurrecting the Año Nuevo Race, which will start from Santa Cruz and end in Monterey. Chris Hoffman, who is the Race Chair at SCYC has assured me that all the contestants will be treated with class, which means slips will be available for the boats if they want to come up a day early, and their race committee will provide us with a start. If you are interested in participating in this event, please contact me as there are some special requirements written in the Notice of Race that you should be aware of. Have a great summer in Monterey and don t quote Mark Twain on summers in San Francisco because he never said that. 5 Cruisers by Sarah Duncan May Cruise to Moss Landing Three die-hard Cruisers made their way to Moss Landing on May 19 - Gitane with Art and Lal Sutton (and able-bodied crew), Sea Siren with David Fisher and Chris Light, and Sitara with Tom Albright and crew Randy Hamilton and Jake London. Fewer boats than the average Moss Landing event allowed everyone the opportunity for a lot of conversation and relaxation. The crossing over to Moss Landing was an average day. The wind came up early out of the northwest, and everyone was able to sail over with little motor assistance. It was not tropical, by any means, just sunny and pleasant. Getting in through the harbor entrance at Moss Landing is always an interesting experience - a little bit of washing machine action is the usual ride. The north harbor near Elkhorn Yacht Club is very impaired after this winter s storm action; the whole area is quite silted up with acres of sand. The outermost docks sit on sand at low tide, and there are a number of boats that are completely stranded out there No news on how that is changing; suffice it to say that the boaters are rather unhappy. Elkhorn welcomed us heartily as usual After a couple of hours of lounging on the boats, manager Octavia greeted us on arrival at happy hour on Friday, where we had tasty treats and good drinks. A potluck supper on Gitane followed, with everyone piling in and squeezing together for food and stories. Some crew had to exit that evening, so it was a pretty early night, considering that it was a Cruisers event The able-bodied crew and her husband returned on Saturday, and everyone piled into Seadog for a trip over to the Haute Enchilada for a wonderful lunch. The salsa was hot, the margaritas were cold, and the company was fantastic. It is really cool to have a small group on occasion; we really had some great conversation and solved many of the world s problems Siesta time afterwards helped everyone decide on another supper on Page 5 Gitane and another early night. The annual Nautical Flea Market on Sunday morning was quite small this year, and wading through the items up for sale went pretty quickly. All three boats got under way early, and crossed the bay with ease, safe at harbor on Sunday afternoon. This cruise was really different Smaller, closer, and maybe a bit quieter. And a lot of fun We re all looking forward to our next adventure over to Stillwater Cove on June for the Commodore s Regatta be there and enjoy the racers, the cruisers, and all of your yacht club friends The Times They Are A-Changin MPYC member Kate Chandler is seen here crewing in an exciting new youth class, the Nacra 15. Six such boats are now participating in San Francisco Bay, and this class will be in the Junior Olympics as well as the Youth Championships. SF Bay, led by StFYC and US Sailing, is shifting its focus from scholastic sailing to high performance sailing in response to recent poor showings in the Olympics. Photo by former StFYC Commodore Kimball Livingston at the recent Nacra 15 clinic. 6 Clubhouse Expansion by David Blaskovich, Chair Construction Oversight Committee At the General Membership meeting on August 29, 2016, the MPYC club members present unanimously authorized the Commodore and Board to secure a loan of $300,000 and member donations to expand and reconstruct portions of the clubhouse as permitted in 2010 by the City of Monterey and the California Coastal Commission. In the intervening months, much activity has taken place: 1. The 2010 permits have been modified to include some cosmetic changes to the original plans, to include replacement of a badly worn roof and rail, and to replace a deteriorating deck rail. 2. In order to make the new bathrooms ADA compliant, the floors will be lowered to the level of the dining room floors in the clubhouse. This means the clubhouse sewer lines will be below the City sewer line. Therefore an encroachment permit has been obtained to install a catwalk and platform under Wharf #2 to contain a sewage ejector system. 3. The Finance Committee has secured a $300,000 loan allowing the Club to pursue the many construction projects simultaneously. 4. The Development Committee has secured $75,000 in member donations and pledges to support the clubhouse expansion. (And they are still accepting donations so please step forward.) 5. A general contractor was selected from three bidding contractors and he has secured all necessary insurance and bonding as required by the City. Enough for the paper work - now we begin real work Over the next few months, you will see demolition and construction taking place on several fronts: 1. Installation of the sewage ejection system under Wharf #2. 2. Framing of the walls and roof in the expansion area over the recently installed cantilevered joists. (This expanded area is necessary for the bathrooms to become ADA compliant. The expansion area includes space behind the galley; although ADA expansion of the galley is part of the 2010 permit, galley expansion is left for subsequent funding and consideration.) 3. Demolition and reconstruction of the bathrooms. 4. Removal and replacement of the roof. The deteriorating roof rail will be replaced by a guard wall, masking the HVAC equipment on the roof. 5. Removal and replacement of the deteriorating deck rail. During the demolition and construction phases, all efforts will be made to minimize inconvenience to members and special events, especially the summer sailing camp. However, we're demolishing bathrooms so at some point in time, we will all need to accommodate a little inconvenience. Portable facilities are likely to be brought in during this phase. (Private parties and special events are still encouraged, but please work with the Commodore and Club Manager to schedule these around the construction schedule.) That is the big picture. Of course, there are many small steps taken as we make progress: electrical, plumbing, insulation, finish work, painting, and on. If you have ever added to your home or business, you know the experience. It can get a little messy before it gets better, but persevere. And if you have gone through a remodel, you know there are always little surprises. Our Construction Oversight Committee (COC) has tried to anticipate and budget on as small a scale as feasible to minimize those little surprises, and we've even set aside a budget line item for "unanticipated" work, such as rot under the old bathrooms. Let's hope we will not need to tap that line item. The COC has a wonderful balance of professional talents meaning construction features have been selected which are of great value to the Club while also being cost-effective. We are optimistic the entire set of projects can be completed in a few months, so stay with us and enjoy the ride while we make the clubhouse a better place for all our members. Page 6

8 Spinnaker Cup by Sharron Frey Photos by Di Cailliet This year s Spinnaker Cup, now the first leg of the California Offshore Race Week, was a rousing success. time to ready the club for the annual birthday celebration Whew All of this could not have been accomplished without the help and support of our amazing team of more than fifty volunteers It s truly wonderful to see the way we all come together with spirit, good will, and enthusiasm, to make the impossible seem easy. 38 boats left San Francisco at 9:00 A.M. on Saturday, May 27. Our wonderful crew of volunteers started at noon, and began setting up the RC station at the end of Wharf 2, preparing escort boats, and preparing the Club for the arrival of the racers. The first boats crossed the line around 6:00 P.M. to the rousing cheers of spectators. Then, things got busy. For the rest of the night, until the wee hours on Sunday, the Club was a whirlwind of activity as escort boats guided finishers to their berths, crews came in to sign out key cards, enjoy the delicious soup prepared by our wonderful kitchen staff, and tell tall tales around the bar The 2:00 A.M. closing finally cleared out the club and we awaited the arrival of the last finishers, who came in around 4:00 A.M., hungry for hot soup Dave Blaskovich at the finish line. Commodore Betsy Jeffers experience was invaluable in coordinating a common NOR between 3 different races and 5 different yacht clubs Race committee: Dave & Lin Blaskovich and Greg Cailliet. Trophies were awarded at noon on Sunday, followed by the skippers meeting and a fabulous reception for participants and volunteers early in the evening. The second leg of the CORW started off from Monterey at noon on Monday, allowing just enough And, I can t imagine an event of this magnitude happening without the constant presence and unflagging support of Kit and John Ruck They were the first to arrive each day, and the last to leave each night. Kit s cheerful, positive attitude welcomed everyone, and set the tone for the entire event. Thank you to everyone who helped make the Spinnaker Cup a great success Page 8
