2 Commodore s Log It is finally, officially, summer, and I could not be happier It feels so good to have those longer days, whether I m sailing, working, or just hanging out but preferably sailing, of course Our Club s Summer Sailing Camp is continuing its success of recent years and is running at full capacity until the beginning of August Commodore David Duncan Well done, Sharron and Randy Frey With their lead instructor, Jacob Paoletti, and the other instructors and interns, the Freys are guiding both new and returning sailors through their watery paces. The campers have also been enjoying great lunches on Thursdays, thanks to the galley staff and many, many hamburgers. The Club Open House was held on Saturday, June 25, with approximately forty visitors touring the clubhouse. Many of those visitors took away membership applications and brochures, and all of them raved about what a great place the Club is. Thank you to all of the volunteers who contributed their time and energy to this event. We hope that some new members will crop up as a result of this wonderful day. Now that I ve mentioned the brochures, I need to publicize our new brochure a bit more. One of our newer Intermediate members, Kelly McCay, has designed an absolutely beautiful new brochure for the Club. If you haven t seen it, stop by the display at the guest book and check it out. It is fabulous With the aid of Becky Brock, Betsy Jeffers, and photography by Patrick Tregenza, we have a beautiful publication to advertise our Club. Thank you, Kelly and crew All of you must have walked on the new ramp by now, and is it not simply the best? Layout Construction did such a great job, and the Construction Oversight Committee couldn t be happier. More details for this new area of the Club are in the works, including a professional paint job and other cosmetic and structural details. Many members have expressed the desire to paint or help to finish this stage of the project, for which I am very pleased. However, the committee wants a professional job performed in order to further the longevity of these improvements. That being said, there will be a Club Pride Day on September 3, and all of you are invited to come and give a hand at sprucing up our little corner of the harbor. There is always plenty to do, and all hands are welcome and encouraged, and no skills are required. July is going to start with a bang a Hobie Catamaran bang The annual regatta will be held over the 4 th of July weekend, with John Ruck running the show. The Club will have a barbecue to celebrate the Independence Day, and then we ll be off and racing, cruising, and sailing until the end of the month. Hope to see you there Sir Fluffykins wants to sign up for Summer Sailing Camp A large sea otter, christened "Sir Fluffykins" by the Juniors, has taken up residence on the Junior Dock. 4 Race by John Feeley (Race Chair) O it's I that am the captain of a tidy little ship, Of a ship that goes a sailing on the pond; And my ship it keeps a-turning all around and all about; But when I'm a little older, I shall find the secret out How to send my vessel sailing on beyond. Robert Louis Stevenson When was the last time you read Treasure Island? Recommend you put that on your summer reading list and enjoy more than a movie. This will be a short article. Just returned from Nepal on business. Not much ocean there but staring at the Himalayas can have the same effect as watching a raving ocean especially during this monsoon season. I apologize but the Washington DC Bear demands reports, so I am a bit buried in satisfying the hunger before the July 4th weekend. We are up through Sunset Series Race 14 and more than half way through the season. The leaders are: A Fleet- Bustin Loose; B Fleet-Calphurnia; C Fleet-Ecaroh; and Shields Fleet-Yankee. The Summer 1 & 2 PHRF Series was won by: A Fleet- Bustin Loose; B Fleet- a tie between Calphurnia and Soggy Dollar; and C Fleet- a tie between Leprechaun and Cnidarian. The Spring ODR Series was won by: Shields-Rolly and Santa-22 s- Leprechaun. Again regarding the Shields summer results, I provide the top six finishers. I understand the top six Shields at the end of the summer series have a chance to participate in this year s Shields Nationals in Monterey Bay. The top six finishers in the spring and first 2 summer series for our two Monterey Bay fleets were in order: Rolly (12) Yankee (12), October (12), Stillwater (7), Helen (12), and Delaplaine (7). On 26 June while I was flying back from Nepal, the Jack and Jill race was won by Shields-Yankee; and PHRF- Ecaroh. CONGRATS to All Question for next month How does the jib lead improve your chances for winning? Answer for last month Since the Club s initiation, what members have won national championships in what class? I continue to discover the wealth of champions in our Club and that includes college. I ll have an answer next month. Finally, I hope you enjoyed your Independence Day weekend. I hope you took a moment to gaze on our great bay and thank quietly the protections we enjoy because of our veterans and active soldiers, marines and sailors. They deserve it Your friend, John Feeley The Shields fleet on the starting line in Wednesday night Sunset Series. Photo by David Royal, Monterey Herald. Page 4
5 Commodores Cruise 2016 by Dave Morris This year s cruise to Stillwater Cove held up its legendary tradition of producing events that are worthy of documenting. In other words, potential dubious achievements are lurking around every corner. Past Commodore Cruises have produced events such as visits by Pebble Beach Security, boat groundings while the owner is sleeping on another boat, people swimming back to their boats late at night, and a general lack of rational behavior. The following synopsis comes from the best intelligence sources. Some of the events described could vary slightly from what actually happened and even be blatantly embellished for effect The weather outlook leading up to the cruise was calling for stiff afternoon winds with some bumpy conditions. We had as many as 10 boats indicate they would go on the cruise, but the weather discouraged a few. Seven boats braved the harrowing journey this year. The first boat around was Sea Siren with David Fisher in command. He got a jump on the program and went over on Thursday. Dave Morris on Kaveinga (that s me) was the last to arrive on Saturday morning. I probably missed some good stories since most boats were there by Friday evening. As this year s cruise host, I opted to have a theme and asked people to bring kites. Unfortunately the conditions were not perfect for some of the kites while one kite, Don Hoover s Happy Face kite, seemed to fly very easily. He wins the kite competition for a number of reasons that you will understand as you read. Debbie Morris gets an honorable mention as the kite that liked to swim the most. Notable events from this year s cruise: While in route to Stillwater, Dave Fisher was towing his inflatable behind Sea Siren. This is a fairly common thing to do. As Dave rounded Cypress Point, he checked on the dinghy and everything looked good. There is something liberating about that stretch of water between Cypress and Stillwater; the steep seas are now behind you, Carmel Beach comes into view, and the end of the trip is at hand. Unfortunately, when Dave got to Stillwater, the dinghy was no longer trailing dutifully behind and in fact, was never seen again There is a rumor that someone else s outboard may have been on the wayward dinghy better get your Tux ready, Dave. Butterfly Kite at Stillwater Cove. Photo by Bobbette Bradley. Next up is the attempted escape of Chris and Martisa Light s Catalina 36 Pronto. I am not sure where Martisa was as the event unfolded, but I do know that Chris had just gone over to Shaman to visit with the Hoovers. While they were down below, Don looked out a window just in time to watch Pronto slide by, no longer attached to the picket line. From our vantage point on Kaveinga, we could hear lots of yelling and gesturing upwind and continued page 6 Page 5
6 Commodore s Cruise continued eventually figured out what the fuss was all about. Later, when the BBQ dinner was underway on Stillwater Pier, lots of discussion was heard about how this happened from the line chafing through to it simply coming un-tied could be marginally Tux worthy. Tied closely to this was a kite event that could never happen again even if you tried to duplicate it. We had 10 people sitting in the cockpit of Kaveinga and while watching the commotion of apprehending Pronto, Betsy Jeffers noticed a strange thing jumping and skipping across the surface of the water and kelp. From afar, it looked like a miniature Marlin tail walking. As it got closer we realized it was a rod and reel combo dancing along on its handle. Looking up, almost over the bow, we saw Don Hoover s big yellow Happy Face kite merrily flying by, towing the rod and reel. It eventually came up against the cliff bordering the 6 th fairway with the kite flying about 100 feet above the fairway, much to the delight of several golfers. In the haste to react to Chris boat getting loose, Don had jumped into action dropping the rod and reel. Four kids on the beach had spotted the kite and started scaling along the cliffs at high tide to get to it. Momentarily Don went motoring by in his dinghy with us trying to direct him where the rod and reel were on the cliff. Don quickly motored toward the area hoping to beat the kids to it. He was about 20 seconds too late and the lead boy had it in his hand with the kite still flying mightily above the fairway. Don Hoover can give details of how the conversation went but the kid extorted him for $100 Or maybe it was the other way around with Don bribing the kid. Either way that is one hell of an expensive kite As Saturday s cocktail hour came to an end, the cruisers headed for the BBQ dinner on Stillwater pier. Once again our fabulous staff put together a scrumptious meal and a great time was had by all The weather was exceptionally pleasant on the pier this year which added to the great turnout of members. Sunday s forecast was again calling for afternoon winds and bump, so most of the boats opted for a Sunday morning departure. Debbie and I on Kaveinga decided to stay for one more quiet night in the cove. As we motor-sailed out of Carmel Bay just after sunrise on Monday morning, we cast an occasional eye towards the coastal rocks hoping to spot the missing dinghy, but alas, no such luck. 7 Ocean Great Lakes Challenge Cup by Eric Anderson Tiburon 191 pulled off a second place finish in this year s Ocean Great Lakes Challenge Cup held in Buzzard s Bay Massachusetts. Competing at Beverly Yacht Club against defending champion Bill Berry on his home waters was an opportunity we eagerly anticipated. In addition to Berry s crew on #239 Syrinx, the other fleets represented were from Larchmont, NY, Oxford, MD, and Martha s Vineyard. This year s series consisted of six races, four contested on Saturday and the final two on Sunday. After the first two races, Tiburon was in a tie for first with #239 when we became participants in a rather unwelcome occurrence. Midway through the starting sequence for race 3, we were hit while on starboard tack. The resulting thud of two 5,000 lb. boats colliding is a particularly unpleasant sound, and it is especially unsettling during a borrowed-boat regatta. A quick review of the damage revealed our boat has a decent sized chunk of her bow missing, but it was above the waterline and appeared non-structural. The offending boat sustained significant damage to its toe rail, but also remained in the regatta. Race 3 saw Monterey take a second, and fall into second position by a point. Race 4 was a longer course and featured several significant wind shifts. In what might have been the most competitive race of the entire regatta, we found ourselves in last place at the final leeward rounding. We managed to pass two boats and almost three in the final windward leg to finish in 3 rd, our lowest place on Saturday. Consistent with other Shields Class events, this year s Challenge Cup was very well planned and accommodations for away-crews was exceptional. We were housed in an historic 6-bedroom home which was a short 3 block walk to the yacht club. Our hosts, Kirt and Susan Mead, provided every possible amenity and even stayed up with us watch the entirety of the disappointing Game 7 - NBA Finals, which concluded around midnight Eastern. continued page 8 Page 7
8 Ocean Great Lakes Challenge Cup continued Besides our great digs in Marion, we were invited to dinner at the home of Joan and Ed Tiffany. Joan s father was a longtime executive at Cape Cod Shipbuilding and they have been campaigning their Shields, Patience #4, for over forty years. Just a few miles outside of town, the Tiffany s waterfront estate is also home to many significant Shields Class historical items and photographs. The Tiffany Bucket, a trophy awarded each year to the Marion Shields posting the fastest time to Martha s Vineyard for the Edgartown Regatta, is permanently housed here. Joan remarked that her record time of 2 hours and 42 minutes for this 24-mile race is unlikely to be challenged as that passage featured both strong northwest winds and a favorable tide too. Spending five days on the road and traveling across the country is never an easy task. I am very appreciative of the willingness of the Tiburon crew to make this a reality - Ari Rettinger, Helm; David Peartree, Mast; John Dean, Foredeck; and Randy Shore, Tactician. 9 Bar & Galley Report by Debbie Morris Phase 1 of our transition to a Service Charge adder was completed the second week of June and represents an update of the Bar Menu portion of the Point of Sale (POS) system - Maitre D. One of the main changes required was to back out the inclusive tax within the bar prices and then reenter those prices net of tax. The POS system is now set up to compute the 8% service charge and sales tax and add them to the final total on the bar tab. If you ve happened to glance at your latest bar receipt, you may have noticed the slight impact of those changes. Otherwise, the ordering of a beverage from one of our staff bartenders remains unchanged. The biggest VISUAL impact of the implementation of the 8% service charge on bar sales was the need to revise the bar menus to better align with the POS system. A Bartender on Duty version was created for those times when staff is behind the bar. That menu lists prices to which service charge and tax will be added when beverages are rung up by a staff bartender via Maitre D. Of course, the majority of time there is no bar staff on duty and thus an Honor Bar version of the menu was created. This menu is the more important one of the two because it lists the new net of tax prices for members who are utilizing the chit process. It also discloses that the service charge and tax will be added at a later date when the chits are actually keyed into the POS system. SO, be sure you are writing the prices that indicate Chit on your chit. Additionally, this same Honor Bar menu lists CASH prices. These prices already include the service charge and tax and are helpful in those instances when a member opts to pay cash instead of filling out a chit. The fully loaded price is easily found and the member can simply drop the money in the slot next to the center cash register. It can also be useful for those times when no bartender is on duty, but a member chooses to play host to a guest of a reciprocal yacht club or even one of their own guests and cash payment is tendered. So when you have an opportunity, please acquaint yourself with both of these new menu formats and let us know of any ideas to further improve the signage and make it easier to use. As for Phase 2 of the transition, the galley menu restructuring is in the final stretch and should be in place within the next couple of weeks. At the same time, our committee plans to roll out the new Friday dinner menu which we are excited to share with our members. Cruising Club by Greg Cailliet (Cruising Club Chair) Last month, we had Peggy Stap, Founding Director, Marine Life Studies speaking on her activities & how you might get involved. Her title was Rescuing Whales - One at a Time & The Whale Entanglement Team (W.E.T.) They are also raffling their 19-foot Donzi F-19 Center Console Boat (which they have replaced with another vessel) and it's a good cause. Speakers for the next meeting (12 July) will be Eric Anderson and Garth Hobson on the Shields Fleet and hosting the first Nationals here since It should be quite interesting and the event will undoubtedly be exciting. 15 The Black Pearl Graces the Walls of MPYC by Paul Brocchini There is a new piece of art hanging on the walls of the dining room, The Black Pearl. The painting is an impactful, nighttime silhouette of the ship looming in front of a full moon. Be sure you check it out. It is hanging on the west wall The Black Pearl, a depiction of the rollicking ship from the movie Pirates of the Caribbean, is the work of local artist Angela Ng. When Angela was a high school student here, she was a member of the Youth Arts Collective (YAC), a local arts education group that fosters hands-on art education. They describe their mission thusly: YAC is a nonprofit, after school art studio and mentorship program for high school and college artists brilliant and struggling, confident and fringe, multi-ethnic, multi-tempered, and over 40% financially challenged. They learn art, job, and life skills, and gain a healthy dose of self-esteem and gratitude along the way. YACsters learn to believe in themselves, take creative risk, and give back. 100% graduate from high school. 95% of YACsters go on to university, college, and art college many on scholarships. Since her YAC days Angela earned an engineering degree from Harvey Mudd College. If you are into supporting youth activities, YAC is worthy of your interest. The painting was purchased at a YAC exhibition. Page 15
