4 Club reports Club reports COMMODORE S REPORT Kerry Noyes In my first quarter as Commodore the Club has been very busy, congratulations must go to General Manager Brett James and his staff for their continued great hospitality and unwavering energy. During this time, we have held the inaugural Gold Coast Marine Family Festival, Daryl Braithwaite 70th Anniversary Celebrations, Black Sorrows, Melbourne Cup Luncheon, Charity Sailing Day and many more events. It was my pleasure to attend my first Associates Melbourne Cup luncheon, what a great day, thank you to the Associates for their continued support of our great Club. The Associates Committee continue to support our Club with their fundraising. Please when you see the Associates in the Club make an effort to acknowledge them. Although I was attending a family wedding for the 70th Anniversary Celebrations all reports have been a great day was had by all, I believe Daryl Braithwaite was a great success and many have commented we should hold this event annually. Congratulations to the Southport Yacht Club Power Boat division on winning the 2016 Goodwill Cup, a tremendous effort was put in by the Power Boat Committee ably lead by Graham Webb Vice Commodore Power with the assistance of Past Commodore Phil Short. We welcome the Cup back to Southport Yacht Club with much pride. It was also good to see some contribution from the sailing fraternity mixing it with the powerboat team, this is what our Club is all about. On Friday the 4th November the Sailing division held their annual Charity Sailing Day with teams from local company s having a fun day on the water whilst raising funds for Youth Sailing, I would like to thank the following businesses for their contribution to the sailors of tomorrow, Lion /XXXX, Gold Coast City Marina, Strike Fuels, QFFS/Moco, Pacifica, Club Marine, Document Solutions and LJ Hooker. Of course we would be unable to hold these days without the very generous volunteering of vessels and skippers from our offshore / twilight fleet, thank you to those who gave their valuable time and vessels. This event raised over $5,500 for our youth sailing team, a great effort. We were also very proud to announce Mathew Belcher OAM as our High Performance Mentor, as you are aware Mathew is a world revered sailor and I am sure our youth team will benefit from his years of sailing experience. Mathew is working with our Sailing Operations Manager Simon Turpin to not only mentor our youth sailors but to leave a long lasting legacy with our young mentors themselves, what a great opportunity for our Club. In closing I would like to remind all members we have the Club Pittwater to Southport Yacht Race commencing on the 2nd January and Bartercard Sail Paradise 8 12 January. Although these events are for our Offshore Division, we can all be involved either by volunteering time for finishing, assisting with on water rescue boats or just adding to the ambience in the Club to welcome the crews when they finish. I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year please enjoy the facilities the Club has to offer and be safe. 5 Club reports Chairman s REPORT Scott Siganto Reflecting on the last quarter at the Club, and it s hard to imagine how we packed so much into three months! We have opened the sailing season at Sail Past, and Breaking of the Flag, to concerts by Black Sorrows, and the members only function, Braithwaite on the Beach, it s been an incredible time at the Club. Our 70th Sail Past and Breaking of the Flag saw exceptional weather across both days, a Clubhouse filled with members and guests, and vessels were dressed to impress for the Blessing of the Fleet. The Club hosted a members only beach party with performance by Daryl Braithwaite on the Waterscape Pontoon, and what an amazing afternoon of music, friends, dancing on the sand, and perfect weather was had. Members can look forward to more events just like this in the future! I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate our recently elected Junior Commodore, Melanie Watson, and Junior Vice Commodore, Hudson McKee. Voted by their peers, the junior sailors, they will serve a two year term assisting the junior sailors, mentoring, and attending general manager s REPORT Brett James As the weather heats up so does SYC. The last three months have seen further 70th Anniversary celebrations including both the Power Boat and Sailing Presentation Evenings, the Club s 70th anniversary Sail Past and Blessing of the Fleet, the Pontoon Members luncheon, and the SYC Members celebrations with Daryl Braithwaite performing live on the Waterscape Pontoon Bar. Melbourne Cup saw over 500 members and guests dressed to impress watching the race that stops the nation at SYC. Carols on the Broadwater has proved to be more popular than ever with the event being fully booked two months before the event, we look forward to another great community event. Our dinner and shows are becoming more and more popular with another two entertainment acts selling out weeks in advance, The Andrews Sisters and Black Sorrows. Keep an eye out for our next entertainment act on Friday 6th January, A Night with the Stars featuring Digger Revell, Dennis Knight, Lucy McIntosh and Vic & Kerrie Kena. With 2017 just around the corner, New Year s Eve celebrations have been arranged with parties at both Main Beach and Hollywell, be sure to book in quickly to avoid missing out! Olympic Gold and Silver medallist and six time 470 World Champion Mathew Belcher OAM has commenced mentoring the SYC Junior Sailors at the SYC Sailing Academy. Mathew official functions as representatives of Southport Yacht Club. Well done! It s an immense achievement, you should be very proud of this accomplishment, and we will do everything to assist you during your term. Olympic Gold and Silver medallist, Mathew Belcher OAM, has come on board the SYC Team to mentor the junior sailors and re- launch the High Performance Sailing Program. Mat is working with the youth team both on water and off, with a complete program including personal development. If you are interested in the programs we have to offer, please contact the Sailing Office. Congratulations must go to the Goodwill Cup team on bringing the Cup back to SYC. Well done. As we head towards the festive season, I wish all our Members, their families, our sponsors and partners, Management and the SYC Team, a very Merry Christmas, and look forward to a happy and prosperous New Year. Scott Siganto Chairman will mentor Southport Yacht Club Sailors and National High Performance Programs with the re-launching of the SYC High Performance Sailing Squad and will provide on-water training together with a focus on fitness, nutrition, theory and personal development. We are ecstatic to have the 2013 voted World s Sailor of the Year, Mathew Belcher back at the Club and on our shores, it will be a great experience for the youth sailors to learn from the very best. In the last edition I welcomed our new House Manager Glenn, and Head Chef Dominic. I am very pleased to see a great turnaround, not only in regards to profit but the positive comments from Members and Guests. Please make sure you book with the Restaurant as we come into this very busy time of year. I would like to thank all of the staff for their hard work and dedication as the past three months have been very busy and intense with many large Club events. In saying this, the calendar for the next three months includes Carols on the Broadwater, NYE, Club Marine Pittwater to Southport, Bartercard Sail Paradise, Australia Day and Fastway Couriers Cat Weekend, just to name a few, so there is no time to rest as we continue on to the new year. 6 club reports Finally, Summer has arrived and it is so amazing to see the activity of our members both on and off the water. The energy and enthusiasm has been addictive and our Summer season looks like breaking all records of participation. To put into perspective, for the first 6 months of our year (May October) we have had a total of 8,262 people participate in the following categorised events: SYC Sailing Academy 2,302. Corporate Sailing Events 625 SYC Club Racing 3,779. SYC Special Events 1,556 This represents an increase of over 48% upon last years recorded participation! We kicked off our Sailing Season at the beginning of September with our amazing Sail Past and Breaking of the Flag ceremonies. Thank you to everyone who attended and made our Club proud with our 70th Year anniversary ceremonies. In our Club racing we have seen a lot of our Cadets progress through our sailing academy pathways and are now stepping up to their next level and choosing bigger and faster boats. The Off The Beach Dinghy Division has exploded, with OK Dinghies being re-introduced to our Club and they seem to be breeding like rabbits, as we now have 14 of them racing. I must congratulate Ben Downey and Kelvin Holdt for all of their energy and enthusiasm which has been the catalyst for the growth of this Dinghy Class well done gents! Exciting times are ahead in the new year, and we will be kicking off January with a new coastal offshore race from Pittwater to Southport. We are expecting over 30 Yachts and Multihulls to be racing from our friends at Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club and we are certainly looking forward to welcoming all the Skippers and their crews to SYC. If you would like to volunteer, shifts will be available similar to that of our Sydney to Gold Coast Yacht race, therefore please log on to syc.volunteerroster.com. Many of the Competitors will then also be staying and competing in our On Friday, November 4, Southport Yacht Club hosted the Club s annual Charity Sailing Day. Approximately 80 local business leaders along with numerous Club sailing members took part in a fun day of sailing on the Gold Coast Broadwater, with special guest speaker Olympic Gold and Silver Medallist Mathew Belcher OAM. The events purpose is to provide an opportunity for business leaders to entertain their clients or use for a great team building exercise, all while raising money for Youth Sailing. With a huge thank you to our twilight sailors and local businesses, the Club raised over $5,500 for the Youth Sailors of SYC. Thank you to everyone involved for all of your support in this great Club event! Simon Turpin Sailing Operations Manager Bartercard Sail Paradise Regatta. Towards the end of January, we will see the arrival of the newly anticipated Nacra 15 Catamarans to SYC Hollywell. The new Nacra 15 has been nominated as the ISAF Youth Catamaran for the pathway towards the Olympics and resembles a lot to its bigger sister, the Olympic Nacra 17. We will be hosting the first of the High Performance Youth Training Camps in January where selection for The Australian Youth Sailing Team (AYST) for the Youth World Sailing Championships will be underway. Australia Sailing High Performance Coach, Darren Bundock will be conducting the training camps and we are looking forward to welcoming his team along with the dedicated High Performance Youth Sailors from around the country to SYC Hollywell. SYC Hollywell will be home to the Qld High Performance Youth Catamaran Sailing Team where at least 8 of the Nacra 15 Catamarans will train on our waters throughout the campaign. I must mention and sincerely thank Commodore Kerry Noyes and Steve Curtis from our major Club sponsor Fastway Couriers. Their dedication and commitment to our Club, our Youth Sailors and the Nacra Catamaran were instrumental in bringing the Nacra 15 to Australia and SYC Hollywell. Good luck to everyone who is travelling over Christmas and New Year to attend State and National Championships. We wish you safe travels and fair winds and know you will again do us proud. Wishing you and your families a safe and Merry Christmas and I look forward to seeing you on the water throughout our Holiday Season. 7 retuned - airlie beach & hamilton island race week Using a Dan Leech design I set out to build a 6.5 meter Sports Boat some 18 months ago. Originally named Stay Tuned, the boat underwent major reconstruction including cutting the front and stern adding a meter to the overall length. Wings were also included making her 3.5 meters wide along with an extra 1 meter of mast height. Following the modifications the vessel was relaunched and renamed as Retuned. The crew on board during this period included myself and skipper, along with Chris Percy, Peter Pritchard and Grant Meredith. More recently due to other commitments Brad Cawthorne has come on board to replace the position of Grant. During Stay Tuned sailing career we have had many successes at Club, State and National levels within the Australian Sport Boat Association. At SYC (Club level) we have won the JaM Series 2014/15, Round the Cans 2015/16, Crab Island Classic 2014/15, along with the Royal Queensland Sport Boat Series 2014/15. In 2015/16 our greatest success was winning both the ASBA Queensland Australian Championships. In April of 2016, myself along with the assistance of Dan Leech, drew up new bow and stern alterations to help the boat adapt with different racing scenarios, along with this came the wing dimensions, again to increase the boats capabilities. To ensure we had the best working on the vessel I approached the assistance of Peter Green, who was thrilled with the idea. Peter fortunately donated his shed to the vessel modifications and so they began. Racing continued while the new pieces were being built, and once the sailing season commenced the chopping phase of the original boat began. I had thoughts at this stage like What have I done, is this too much however we persisted to continue with the changes and wow didn t they pay off! Our first outing in the newly developed Retuned took us to the 2016 Mooloolaba Nationals, although confident in the modifications we were not 100% sure on how the boat would compare, however we were extremely surprised and happy to come home with third (3rd) place. This continued on to Airlie Beach race week, where in 2015 we just missed the top of the podium finishing second (2nd), however with the remodifications, in 2016 we returned to the shores up north to come home with a win! Since then we have partaken in a lot of Club racing, winning the Southport Yacht Club Bridge to No Bridge, Crab Island Classic and more recently first (1st) place in the Queensland State Championships. I would like to thank my crew for all of their hard work and dedication to the boat, and look forward to many more great sailing opportunities as we get prepared to compete again at the Australian National Championships in April 2017! 9 gold coast seaway tower - 30th anniversary Next year will be the 30th anniversary of the Gold Coast Seaway Tower. The Seaway was officially opened on 31 May 1986 by the then Premier, Joh Bjelke-Petersen and the Tower was opened about a year later. The Member for Southport chaired a meeting of representatives of MSQ, Water Police, Gold Coast Waterways Authority, and the Volunteer Rescue Groups to set up the working of the Tower. It was intended and continues to be a group and government and rescue organisations working side by side. The old Southport Bar challenged boaties wanting to gain access to the Broadwater. The entrance was made difficult due to shifting sands. Before the Seaway was opened in 1986, a trawler operator returning from a night of fishing died after his trawler Aquarius capsized near the entrance. The Tower was built overlooking the entrance as the result of the need for an observation site. The Tower was named the Malcolm Taylor Tower in memory of the fisherman who lost his life. The Tower is not particularly high with 4 floors and a roof area but the observation areas extend for many miles out to sea. The Tower is occupied by two radio operators at any time, one being a Coast Guard volunteer member and the other being a member of Volunteer Marine Rescue. There is a duty to observe and also to monitor marine radio traffic. The main priority is, however, marine safety. The radio room contains 8 marine radios which scan all emergency channels as well as working channels. The Seaway and the Tower now provide a safe navigable entrance channel into the Gold Coast s Broadwater. The Broadwater is now one of the best boating areas on the Coast. The waterways of the Gold Coast are rated as one of Australia s busiest waterways with more than some 40,000 registered vessels. On 1 September, 2016 Anthony (Tony) Jamieson a member of the Club has been appointed as the Tower Manager for the next 2 years. This is volunteer position and the manager represents both Coast Guard and VMR operators for the Tower. The first Sydney to Gold Coast Yacht race was held in August 1986, this is a very memorable event for the Seaway Tower each year, and we look forward to the arrival of vessels in If you are interested in volunteering for Coast Guard or have any further queries, please contact the Gold Coast Seaway Tower via Communication Channel Inclusion in SYnC in SYnC is published quarterly September, December, March and June including upcoming news and events, future initiative growth of SYC plus much more E-newsletter This electronic newsletter is distributed weekly to all members, to subscribe simply visit Facebook Like us on facebook for all up to date news from SYC! 20 @ southport yacht Club power boats - vice commodore power Graham Webb Vice Commodore Power We know summer is around the corner when the northerlies come to town, they have not let us down this year so far. Welcome to a new Boating Season at SYC Sail Past was a great day for the Club with Commander Doornbos RAN taking the salute. It was a real privilege to have such a distinguished member return to be part of this special day, particularly as it was for our 70th Birthday. The power boat season is now well under way with the running of The Power Boat Committee Trophy on the 8th October Sponsored by WYMARK Insurance Brokers, followed by The Cutty Sark Open Traditional event, Sponsored by YALUMBA, on the 9th. We were a little down on numbers with many of our normal entrants away up north for winter. Our events now have 15 secret checkpoints as against 10 in the past, making it a little more difficult to get those low scores we were getting last season. The Dux Series course was a new course set for this season with some difficult turns to contend with. We will run this course 3 times to complete The Dux Series. Ken Tregeagle is now our secret checkpoint setter and he did a great job considering it was his first time on the job. Van Man, with navigator Fay took out the first event with15 points, Mal Wood and crew aboard Finky Dink Too coming second on 17 points, and Peter Brown on Bipty Bipty third on a countback with 17 points also.the Handicap section was won by Maxine with Dennis Watt at the helm followed in second by Bell Tempo Steve and Margot Manchester with Waterhouse Bert Sherring in third place. The Cutty Sark Open is a new event we started last year to try and keep traditional navigation alive in our series. Past Commodore and Life Member, Tony Goldner, donated a very special trophy for this event. The event was won by yours truly again with navigator Fay doing a sensational job in very trying conditions, second was Bell Tempo Steve and Margo Manchester accompanied by Past Commodore Phil Short on board giving them some training pointers for Goodwill Cup, third was Mystic Lady skippered by Justin Sinnamon and son Matthew. The Power Boat Committee had an evening BBQ at Dux after the first event with another BBQ at SYC Main Beach on the Sunday followed by presentation of Trophies. The Goodwill Cup is now back safely in our trophy cabinet at Main Beach after a great win on the 5th November. See report from Dennis Watt in this edition. Our next event is The Treasurers Trophy number 2 in The Dux Series on the 19th November Sponsored by NORCO. The new Fun series Friday at 5 unfortunately had the first event in October washed out with the weather. We will run the second event on Friday the 18th November. All the work is done for you if you would like to come along and have a go at this series. Go to the SYC web site under power boats and see Friday at 5 on the far right hand side of the page to get all the details. All are welcome. I would like to thank all the Members of The Power Boat Committee, both Navigating and Cruising, for their continued support in keeping our division running on an even keel. The cruising division is led by Neal Weidenhofer and committee members Beryl Johns, Ray Gilbert, William Ewens and Bob Montgomery. The Navigation division committee members are Richard von Uht, Dennis Watt, Ken Tregeagle, Peter Brown and Justin Sinnamon. The Power Boat Committee combined Xmas Party will be held at Dux on December 10th following the Vice Commodore s Trophy. All welcome $20 per person. On behalf of Fay and myself I would like to wish all members a very happy and safe boating festive season. Thank you for your continuing support and remember the Club is only as strong as its members. 21 cruising at syc The cruising flotilla has enjoyed some wonderful cruise destinations and activities over the past three months. In the beginning of August we berthed overnight at Couran Cove, where we took advantage of the facilities on offer, enjoyed dinner and had a very enjoyable weekend with fellow cruisers. We also had a three day cruise at the end of August. We met at Paradise Point for lunch ashore before travelling at a leisurely pace up the Coomera River to Santa Barbara and enjoyed pizza s in the park. This was followed the next night by sausages on the Sand at Millionaires Row. Ray Gilbert (Samadhi) organised a week cruise to Days Gutter. The itinerary had to be altered occasionally due to bad weather. We spent two nights sheltered in the Logan River. We were amazed that severe winds had damaged areas of the South Coast while we were enjoying a very calm and peaceful time tucked in the lee of Redbill Island. However the research and planning by Ray saw the fleet anchored in Days Gutter. The entrance to days Gutter is made difficult as the sand bars are constantly shifting and much care must be taken, but once the crossing had been negotiated we were treated to one of the best and scenic anchorages anyone could wish for. The water is crystal clear and the marine life is spectacular, well worth another visit. Our Melbourne Cup cruise was another week long event, the lunch for the cup was provided by Horizon Shores Marina. The café has recently been refurbished and both the catering and marina staff made us welcome. Tuesday afternoon we enjoyed sundowners on Brian and Gay s Lady Suzanne. We then made our way to Perry s Hole and were sheltered for the night and this time sundowners were on Max and Beverley s boat Marguretta. Over the following days cruises enjoyed a beach picnic at the bedroom and a sausage sizzle on the beach at Millionaires Row complete with flares and a camp fire on which we toasted marshmallows. The cruise finished at the celebration held at RQYS facility at Canaipa for the Goodwill Cup. The weekend was made even better by the SYC crew winning back the cup. Be sure to see it in the display cabinet in the entrance foyer at Main Beach. We look forward to the Christmas lights parade on Saturday 26th November which will be followed by an exclusive after party on the Waterscape Pontoon Bar. The Power Boat Christmas party will be hold at Dux Anchorage on Saturday 10th December, this will be something special with guests partaking in a spit roast. 22 syc wins the goodwill cup SYC Powerboat Division wins back the prestigious Goodwill Cup The SYC Powerboat Division has won back the prestigious Goodwill Cup from Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron, to add to our Club s achievements in our 70th Anniversary year. The two winning skippers from SYC- PC Mal Wood and Brian Sherring with VC Power Graham Webb. Team SYC 2016, with Vice Commodore Power, Graham Webb proudly holding up the Goodwill Cup The Goodwill Cup has been held annually on Moreton Bay since 1962, it is a Powerboat Navigation event between teams from SYC and RQYS. During the 55 year history of the Cup, RQYS have won it 24 times, SYC has won it 31 times. The Goodwill Cup itself is a magnificent gold trophy that is 202 years old. SYC last won the Cup in 2014, after a four year absence from our trophy cabinet. In 2015 RQYS won it but this year we were determined to win it back especially to mark our Club s 70th Anniversary. This year the event on November 5, was run in two divisions, Traditional meaning no use of electronic navigation and GPS meaning GPS devices are permitted to assist navigation. A fleet of 37 crews took part, 20 from RQYS and 17 from SYC. The split across divisions were Traditional - 7 from SYC and 8 from RQYS, in GPS it was 10 from SYC and 12 from RQYS. Two separate courses were run for each Division over a distance of 14 nautical miles. Boats competed at nominated speeds ranging from 5 knots to 20 knots. The scores from the first five boats from each club in each division are combined to determine which club wins the Goodwill Trophy. The results scored by SYC crews were sensational, our top five boats in GPS, finished 1st, 2nd,3rd, 4th and 6th!. In first place was PC Mal Wood (Finky Dink Too) with an incredible score of 6 points over 18 checkpoints. VC Power- Graham Webb (Van Man) finished second on count back with an amazing 8 points, ahead of Dr Peter Brown (Bipty Bipty) in third. In fourth place only one point behind was Will Ewens (Speranza) and in sixth place was Todd Brooker (MIA). Todd was competing in his first ever Navigation event and is the Grandson of PC Brian Job who won the event in Winning crew of Finky Dink Too - PC Rob Mundle OAM, PC Mal Wood, PC Chris Oxenford and Bob Bailey Winning crew of Delphys SYC Chairman Scott Siganto, Skipper Brian Sherring, Ron Cameron and Tony Swadling SYC has always had a great family tradition, in this year s Goodwill Cup there were three Skippers from the Sherring family- Bert, Graham and Brian. In Traditional Division, SYC s top five boats filled 1st, 3rd, 4th, 6th and 7th. Brian Sherring (Delphys) winning the Division in great style, with Rob Deshon (Rare Pleasure) 22 in SYnC Southport Yacht Club

23 third. Steve Manchester (Bell Tempo) finished fourth, in only his second year of competition. Gary Doornbos (Mahoghany) was sixth and Paul Matthews (Martini) seventh. Bob Kahl (2nd from left) and the crew of Snooks Too Enjoying the Moreton Bay Porridge are second from left Todd Brooker (MIA) with the Magnum crew Roger Leitch, Dave Churton and skipper PC Neville Ferguson. Thanks to all our other crews who didn t finish in the top five but represented the Club so well as part of Team SYC - Earl Blight (Olunda), Bob Kahl (Snooks Too), Bert Sherring (Waterhouse), Dennis Fountain (Justus) Dennis Watt (Maxine), PC Neville Ferguson (Magnum), and Graham Sherring (Diamond Lil). Our win in this year s Goodwill Cup was one of the most dominant victories in the Cup s history, The RQYS combined scores for their top five boats was 1050 points lost against the SYC score of only 651 points lost! Special thanks to VC Power Graham Webb, for his leadership and determination in making this result a reality. He put in a tremendous amount of work ensuring we had the best possible chance of winning with a real team effort. Dennis Fountain (left) and crew of Justus Enjoying breakfast and eagerly waiting on results Apart from being a very keenly contested sporting event between our two great clubs, it is also a very enjoyable social occasion. The event is run on Saturday, the boats moor overnight at the beautiful RQYS Canaipa Anchorage. The crews enjoy a lovely roast dinner and refreshments ashore, where tall tales and sad stories are exchanged. The results are announced on the Sunday morning after a hearty breakfast washed down with the traditional Moreton Bay Porridge. This event demonstrates the mutual respect, sporting traditions and mateship of members from RQYS and SYC. Again next November, RQYS will be doing all they can to wrestle the Cup back, but now the Goodwill Cup is proudly displayed in the entrance to our Main Beach clubhouse and we want it for more than one year. The only thing we lost at this year s Goodwill Cup, was the Tug O War, AGAIN! Article by Dennis Watt 23 in SYnC Southport Yacht Club

24 @ southport yacht Club sailing - Vice commodore sail Welcome to all of our members, both new and existing! After 120 days in my role as Vice Commodore Sail it seems like just yesterday that I was elected in the Vice Commodore Sail seat. It has been an extremely busy period with both on and off water activities. This year saw us split the presentation night into two different evenings. Our first evening was our Dinghy division which primarily consists of junior sailors (and a few big kids). The decision was made to hold this at our Hollywell Sailing Squadron where the juniors feel right at home and are able to run around freely. What a huge success it was, the organizing was perfect, and the night ran off without a hitch. Congratulations to Karen and Annie in the sailing office who were the main organizers behind this event. As we thought, the juniors had a blast playing on the Hollywell beach while the big kids sat in the bar having a few quite ones telling a few tall stories. The remainder of the divisions were presented at our all new style evening at Main Beach. This year the theme was all about glamour and the ladies in particular really looked glamorous which enhanced the feel for the entire evening. Our new Chef Dominic, supplied a three course meal that had patrons claiming it is the best function meal they ve ever had!. Well done Dominic, you delivered...again. There was a five piece band rocking the night away into the early hours of the morning until the staff finally had to say «go home». Both events were exceptionally well received and our challenge now is to try to top it next year. In the organising roles, I would like to welcome Graham Sherring onto the Sailing Committee to head-up our new Sports Boat division, Ben Downey as the new Dinghy representative and off course our existing divisional representatives Ross Manning, Drew Jones, David Howes, Scott Mcnally and Kelvin Holdt. Ray McMahon Vice Commodore Sail The effort these guys go to every week to help improve their divisions is priceless. A massive thank you to all involved. On the water, Dinghy, Offshore and Etchells are all showing increased numbers in their fleets while the Thursday Twilights, Off The Beach Cats and Inshore Divisions are holding their own in a tough market place. But I am really excited to see just how well our new Sports Boats division will go. They are exciting to watch and are an asset to our Clubs resume. Of course our sensational Bartercard Sail Paradise regatta hits the beaches off the Gold Coast from January This is the Clubs major offshore regatta for the year and there will be boats from all over the east coast competing. It is a great spectacle through the day while sitting on the beaches and its get fun back in the clubhouse at night. With fashion parades, BBQs, bands and all types of entertainment happening around the Club. Feel free to come down to the Club in this period and join in on the fun. Finally, I must congratulate our powerboat colleagues on re-securing the Goodwill Cup from RQYS. I was lucky enough to be involved on the day and it was a resounding victory over our friendly foe at RQYS. The SYC team were clearly the better navigators on the day...well maybe!! Unfortunately one nameless boat, allegedly, may have touched bottom on the Saturday night at Canaipa. With our immediate past Commodore and our current Vice Commodore Power both on board, one might say they were naviguessing rather than navigating. Well done to all in our powerboat division. Have a sensational Christmas and New Year period. Eat, drink and be merry, but importantly be safe and enjoy this time of year with your families and great friends. 25 sailing academy We have had some awesome changes happening with in our sailing academy and our young sailors are all loving it. London Gold medallist, and Rio Silver medallist, Mathew Belcher OAM has jumped on board as the High Performance Mentor for our young squad athletes. The reaction to this has been awesome to see from both kids and parents alike. Matt has brought with him a slightly new way of training that is seeing the kids building on their skills and even learning new ones. This has been the perfect time to introduce this new program as end of year time approaches and so do some big competitions around Australia, including Sail Sydney and Sail Melbourne. The SYC squad has many members who will be travelling away to these regattas over this time, and with Mat s help they are going to be more prepared than ever, and we all wish them the best of luck. For our young sailors who are not quite ready yet to be traveling to such large events, it has been awesome to see our green and bronze fleet sailors improve in leaps and bounds in our new Summer Sunrise series which has been running on Sunday mornings. This is a fantastic place for kids who are new to racing to be able to develop their skills in a safe environment where they can receive coaching on the race course. There is also going to be plenty happening over the school holidays for kids who want to give sailing a try or are doing Funsail and want to come and have a blast with their friends. We have packed the weeks full with Sailing Camps with options for kids of all ages as well as regular Funsail through the week if you cannot committe to the whole 3 days. All the dates and other details of these events can be found on our website under Sailing Academy. Article by Joe Sabin SYC Sailing Academy Southport Yacht Club in SYnC 25

26 keel boat racing Our Keel Boats have been in full swing and really representing the Club well both at home and away. Locally, our Document Solutions Thursday Twilight series continues to show great consistency in numbers and an increase in skill levels. This particular series over the last few years has been a great training ground for our Offshore Division. It is a perfect way for both skippers and crews to get a taste of keel boat yacht racing before heading out tackling the offshore waters. Many of our exceptional offshore crews actually commenced on Thursday nights. Our current Document Solutions Spring Twilight Series looks like being one of the most hotly contested series of all time. I cannot wait to see which boats actually end up on the podium at the end of the season. Offshore, our numbers continue to grow. Our season showed incredible growth and that has continued on into the season. Our Offshore fleet can now also boast it is getting some very serious race boats entering. Apart from our fantastic fleet, we ve had Auric s Quest come to the Club. Owned and skippered by Fred Bestall, this is a serious race boat that is really going to throw the cat amongst the pigeons this season. Away from the Club, our keel boats are showing that Southport Yacht Club is now a force to be reckoned with. Our St.Helena Cup challenge did not quite go to plan with knots blowing on day two of the regatta. Those sort of conditions often don t suit certain boats and can cause significant damage if you re not extremely careful. However, our Beneteau Cup challenge was vastly different. Last year s winner from SYC, Ocean Gem, went back to defend their title. It tied for First (1st) place but unfortunately lost on a count back. That is still a great effort for David Hows and his crew on Ocean Gem and the Club is very proud of you. Our local boat She is heading down to Sydney to contest the 2016 Rolex Sydney Hobart Classic, and we wish Phil Bell all the best and a great race. Other local boats, Aurics Quest, Turbulence and Painkiller OP are also heading down to Sydney to compete in the Club Marine Pittwater to Gold Coast Yacht Race over New Year. Good luck to you all and we look forward to enjoying a quite drink upon your return. To all of our wonderful members, have a great Christmas and fabulous New Year. I look forward to seeing you all around the Club throughout Ray McMahon Vice Commodore Sail Congratulations to the Southport Yacht Club Junior Sailors who competed in the 2016 Sabot Bay Titles at Mooloolaba in October. SYC is extremely proud of our junior sailors with Tom and Sophie Whitmore finishing with a podium finish in third (3rd) place in 2 up scratch. Max and Emma Rutherford won their division with a first (1st) on handicap and Angus Sherring third (3rd) overall at the Bay Titles. Such fantastic offshore competition for all involved. Well done sailors! Love Sailing? We ve got you covered. As partners with several state yachting bodies and class associations, we re putting a little extra wind in the sails of many young Aussie sailors. We re proud to champion tomorrow s champions. gillmarine.com 26 in SYnC Southport Yacht Club

27 barts bash In 2012, the lead up to the America s Cup involved training and development for all the competition entrants, one being Swedish team Artemis. During their training in the 72ft foiling catamarans, Artemis had a capsize which ended with a broken boat, irreparable wing sail and tragically a life lost. Multiple Olympic Medalist Andrew Bart Simpson passed away doing what he loved in San Francisco Bay. The Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation was formed as his legacy to help the sport of sailing around the World and the major event of each year is Bart s Bash, which is a day where racing is run around the World in memory of Bart. Southport Yacht Club supported this day in full strength! I am ambassador for the Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation, therefore I was keen to create a great event at our home Club! Recent Rio Olympian, Jake Lilley, took time out of his schedule to come down and help us raise some money. Before the dinghy racing on Sunday 18th September we auctioned off Jake for the winning bidder to have Jake for the day either sailing their boat with them, for them, or coaching around the racecourse. I d like to announce that I was stunned with our result! We had a tight bidding war that ended with Jake being auctioned off for $1700! The Whitmore family had Jake coaching the kids, Thomas and Sophie, around the racecourse for the day! The kids had grins from ear to ear all day long as they raced with Jake right behind them and occasionally in the boat with them! After the day s race we had a prize-giving that consisted of some special prizes including Australian Olympic Team hats, Jessica Watson signed books and Zhik gear. This then followed with one last auction for the day. An Australian Olympic Team hat signed by the entire Olympic Sailing Team and a framed and signed photo of Nathan Outteridge and Iain Jensen. This auction also exceeded my expectations going off for $825! At the day s end, we as a club raised $3,260 through auctions and entries, which makes me so happy to see what we can achieve when it comes to doing great things for our sport! All of that money goes to the Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation which is mostly distributed to disability sailing! I am incredibly proud of Southport Yacht Club, and our members, for really making a difference! It shows the culture and great kindness of our Club and it feels great to be a part of it! A big thank you to Jake Lilley for making the day a success as well as the Whitmore family, Ben Downey and Kelvin Holdt for major input on the day, Chris Percy for the days photography and to Zhik for supplying a great bunch of prizes. That s a wrap for 2016, see you all for a bigger and better event in 2017! Article by Joel Turner Past Junior Commodore Southport Yacht Club in SYnC 27

28 sailability gold coast We Might Have a Disability but we Love Our Sailing! Sailability Gold Coast gives people with a disability, or who are socially disadvantaged, the opportunity to experience the sense of freedom and even control over their activities that comes with sailing. We are privileged to be granted permission to briefly tell the story of three people who have overcome horrendous disabilities to become active sailors. Brendan Hain Brendan was just 3years old when he almost drowned and was left with Cerebal Palsy, and therefore badly affected motor skills. He attended play group, pre-school and then school through the Cerebal Palsy League. In 1999 Brendan joined a disability support service and it was here that he was first introduced to sailing for people with disabilities at Sailability Gold Coast. Shortly after attending SGC Brendan was asked to join the racing team, and with training by some of the dedicated volunteers, entered his first regatta in 2003 at Lake Ainsworth followed by further local and interstate regattas. Brendan then had the opportunity to purchase his own boat which allowed him to sail solo and compete in race days on Sundays at Southport Yacht Club, Hollywell. Brendan s family s comment:- Sailing is the first activity Brendan has ever been able to accomplish on his own without assistance once he is in his boat. He looks forward to every day he attends SGC, not only for the sailing but also socialising with the great group of people he has come to know. He absolutely loves the freedom he has being out on the water in his own boat and being completely in charge. If it wasn t for the amazing group of volunteers at SGC, their guidance and patience, Brendan would not have been able to reach his potential and be sailing on his own. An important factor in this story is that Brendan himself has a wonderfully positive outlook on life, a wicked sense of humour, rarely complains or feels depressed and even from an early age has been more concerned for the welfare of others who are worse off than he is. Brendan is a really special person at Sailability Gold Coast. Stefan Zac At 21 years of age and a university student in England Stefan was driving his trusty Morris Minor along a road at a good speed of 20 miles per hour (his words) just over 30KPH when a large lorry coming at speed towards him jack-knifed in the wet conditions. Stefan was trapped under the truck and suffered serious spinal chord and brainstem injuries. He was eventually discharged from hospital with no prospect of even getting out of bed on his own, let alone living independently. Thus began a long and challenging journey struggling through rehabilitation of many years determined to become what people call normal. He eventually won the legal battle, and at 36 years old Stefan and his mother came to Australia. Years later he discovered Sailability Gold Coast. He transferred from Tuesdays to Thursdays being very determined to learn to sail and SGC sailors took him out in the dinghies to get him able to manage the boat. This became a pattern until one day, just a few months ago one of our volunteers said just send him out and of course Stefan was all for it. So they did and Stefan just set off and sailed on his own and CAME BACK on his own! All were amazed and Stefan was too much a gentleman to shout I told you so. While the control of the sails is now the current challenge, in gentle to moderate winds Stefan is sailing a proper course around our marker buoys with a pre-set jib and electric control of the main sail. And doesn t he just love it! So does SGC. Neil Rowsthorn Neil learnt to sail as a 12 year old at McCrea Yacht Club on the Mornington peninsular in Victoria. He sailed Sabots and later small catamarans but actually spent most of the next few years as a volunteer crew member on the rescue or support boats. In 1977 he moved to Queensland and did little sailing. In 2002 after a very stressful few months Neil had a bout of gastroenteritis lasting a couple of days. After his immune system fought off the bug it failed to shut off and started to attack his nervous system. Within 16 hours he was on life support totally paralysed only being able to communicate through eye movement and blinking. During the next 7 months he remained like that before first one finger, then his shoulders and finally his lungs began to function again. The following 5 months went in rehab learning to eat, drink and talk again, with many hours spent trying to build strength and increase the range of movement in hands, arms and legs. The rehab activity continues to this day and every small improvement is a winning achievement demonstrating the determination he has given to his recovery. Retiring from the Rural Fire Brigade as Chairman after 20 years there was more time on his hands so he needed another hobby. He comments When I saw a post on social media about disabled sailors it sparked my curiosity so I visited Hollywell and was made to feel most welcome. 30 syc 2016 BROADWATER CHALLENGE and COCK OF THE BROADWATER TROPHY RACE Sunday 30th October saw 50 dinghies with their skippers and crew challenge themselves for the Broadwater Challenge and Cock of the Broadwater Trophy Race. The Southport School, Lourdes Hill College and Brisbane Grammar School fought it out to be the best school on the Broadwater in the inaugural Broadwater Challenge. 23 two handed pacers filled the lawns at Hollywell with a morning session of four races with TSS leading the pack all day with two Southport Yacht Club members Tom Wright and George Morton leading TSS to a victory with a 35 point lead over Brisbane Grammar School. Everyone had a great day and it was fantastic to see so many boats at Hollywell. We look forward to doing more cooperative racing with the three schools in the future. First girls team was Chelsea Haigh and her crew on Intuition from Lourdes Hill College. The Cock of the Broadwater trophy race saw three start lines that included 4 Sailability boats training for the Pan Pacific Masters Games with Neil Rowsthorn finishing first in their division in Fashion Flyer. Leigh Lomas in his Laser 4.7 Sun Bed had a brilliant race and beat all the lasers to win the Division B Laser Trophy. Jackson Foort in his sabot Sab-A-Tack won the Junior Division. Ben Downey in Squid Grip won the Division B OK Dinghy Trophy. Tom Needham and Isaac Dungilson from Brisbane Grammar School on their Pacer Gratham took out the Pacer Division Trophy and also the overall win of the event. All competitors were congratulated on their sportsmanship during the day and everyone finished off the day with a build you own burger or hotdog after presentation. All in all a great event! A special thank you to our Race Officer Reece Foort and all the volunteers who made the day possible and a huge thank you to Lori Clements Winner of the Roy Holdt Volunteer Trophy for for all the photos on the day. 30 in SYnC Southport Yacht Club

32 southport yacht Club associates REPORT Carmel Nicholas President LOVALL CALCINO 2/7/1929 1/10/2016 Age 87 years We are saddened to report the passing of one of our loved and respected Past Presidents, Lovall Calcino. Lovall was a Member of the Club for 33 years, a Life Member from 2003, and President of the Associates Committee from 1987 to She was a great supporter of the Club and was witness to the many changes to the Club during this time. A great friend to many, she guided and supported our fund raising activities and was an integral part in establishing and shaping our Committee as it stands today a group of committed and hard working members, whose objective is to raise funds for the future of Southport Yacht Club. Lovall was a great source of information and encouragement to new members of the Club and had many anecdotal stories that always delighted and entertained. We will miss her guidance and friendship and will remember her well. Since last reporting, the Committee has hosted the Spring Carnival Lunch in September and the Melbourne Cup Lunch in November. Both events were well supported by members and their guests and were very successful as the Committee s signature fund raising events of the year. We presented two Mega Raffles this year, the last being the Christmas Mega Raffle to be drawn later this month. Our Mega Raffles have become very well known both within the Club and in the community, and I thank our valued sponsors for their very generous donations towards making these raffles so successful. They boost our fund raising tremendously and allow us to make significant contributions towards all areas of the Club. Our 2017 calendar will start with a Speaker s Lunch in February and follow up with a Brisbane River Cruise in April. We look forward to seeing all of you at our next events and wish everyone a Peaceful and Happy Christmas, and an abundant New Year. We would love some more of our members to join our Committee, so if you have a few hours to spare each month please give your details to the Club so that I can personally meet with you to discuss.
