Club reports Club reports COMMODORE S REPORT Kerry Noyes First and foremost, congratulations to Mathew Belcher and Will Ryan. A new international season and their first Regatta since the Olympics and another World Cup win in Hyeres, great effort. Congratulations must go to Ray McMahon and the Sailing Committee in successfully securing the Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club Pittwater to Southport Yacht Race. After a very successful Pittwater to Southport Yacht Race in January 2017, it is great to note our hospitality was highly rated amongst the visiting sailors. The Club Marine Pittwater to Southport Ocean race will combine with our signature Offshore Event Bartercard Sail Paradise to create an exciting new experience for both keen Sailors and a holiday destination for their families. It was my great pleasure to represent our Club at this year s Anzac Dawn Service, what an honour, the Marine Guard of Honour participant s special contribution to a spine tingling opening to this most revered and time honoured tradition, a big thank you to the organisers and participants you made us all very proud Southport Yacht Club members. The Pontoon Club celebrates members with 21 years service each year with a dinner to recognise new members into the ranks, it was my pleasure to attend this evening mid-march. Special mention to guest speaker Mara Bun who gave the guests an insight into the waterways operations over the past and coming 12 months. I suggest that members attend the open board meeting forums of the Waterways Authority to gain insight into their workings and give honest feedback from waterway users. The One team initiative led by Mat Belcher has been highly successful at the Hollywell Sailing Squadron. The initiative has seen many of our Bronze (most inexperienced sailors) fleet transition into the Performance sailing team with a number even competing in away regattas. It is pleasing to see that this pathway is now open with our best sailors taking the time to coach and nurture the next generation. It is important to note that enjoyment is the main focus of our programs, and a supportive team environment is the best way to ensure that our youth continue to participate regardless of level well into the future. Our events would not happen if we did not have the support of our General Manager Brett James and his great team from the Sailing Office at Hollywell, Hospitality Staff at Main Beach and all in the background contributing to the success of the Club and as such ongoing support for our on- Water Activities Cruising, Navigating, Racing and the rest. Kerry Noyes Commodore AUSTRALIAN SPORTS BOAT NATIONALS 2017 Congratulations Southport Yacht Club member, Graham Sherring and crew on RETUNED, placing third at the 2017 Sports Boat Nationals held at Port Stephens from April 7 9. More recently another fantastic victory for Graham and his crew, winning the 2017 Ladies Day Race, proudly sponsored by Telemachus Jewellery, long term supported of the annual SYC event. With perfect weather conditions, 13 Club vessels competed in the event from the Club s Hollywell Sailing Squadron on Sunday 30th April. Well done to all who competed. 7 mathew belcher oam Southport Yacht Club champion Mathew Belcher confirms Tokyo Olympics bid Olympic medallists Mathew Belcher and crew member Will Ryan have confirmed they will chase gold at the Tokyo Olympic Games in It will be Mathew s fifth Olympic campaign, winning Gold at London in 2012 with Malcolm Page OAM and Silver at the Rio games last year with Will Ryan. Mathew is excited about their resolve to represent Australia at his third, and Will s second, Olympics. Mathew and Will are in fine form, winning the Sailing World Cup Final at St Kilda late last year, the Australian 470 Championships in February before claiming the most recent World Cup in Europe last month. Coached by Australian Sailing Team Coach Victor Kovalenko, Mathew hopes to add to his highly decorated career which includes his achievements as a six-time 470 World Champion, 420 World Champion in 2000, and the 2013 ISAF World Sailor of the Year. encounter in Tokyo. We are very pleased to be working with the Southport Yacht Club on this activity, Peter said. The new set-up will include the 2016 Australian Olympic Sailing Team containers with a steel fabric structure to enable the boats fully rigged inside to maximise the training environment. Southport Yacht Club General Manager, Brett James, is pleased to have the squad based at the Club saying, It s great to be able to support the sailors and to have them around the Club. Having my home base back on the Gold Coast is extremely important to me, allowing me to spend more time with my family whilst attending consistent training commitments, along with supporting the Club s community based projects said Mathew. Mathew and Will can be followed via Facebook and Instagram: belcherryan2016 We are absolutely thrilled to release this news as we continue our Olympic training, I absolutely love being on the water and am extremely excited to join this journey for my fifth Olympic campaign, said Mathew, the recipient of an Order of Australia medal in Mathew is currently Mentoring the High-Performance Program at Southport Yacht Club s Hollywell Sailing Squadron, using his own personal experience to provide onwater training together with a focus on fitness, nutrition, theory and personal development. Australian Sailing have established a 470 Gold Coast training sub site at Southport Yacht Club in the lead-up to the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2020, hosting majority of the teams domestic training. This is the first time the Australian Sailing Team has established a facility outside the National Training Centre in Sydney and is a fantastic opportunity for the Queensland sailing community. The facility will be the base for the Australian 470 Men s and Women s squads, for training and national camps as well as boat storage and allow for gym and physical therapy activities at the Runaway Bay Sports Super Centre. It will also be a training base for the Queensland Academy of Sport program. Australian Sailing Director, Peter Condon said the partnership with Southport Yacht Club provides a stable environment to develop their training schedule. For our 470 squads, the move to the Gold Coast and the set-up of a training base is a positive step for their program. While the National Training Centre remains in Sydney for the Australian Sailing Team, the Southport Yacht Club as an Australian Sailing Team Sub-site provides a great opportunity to train in similar conditions to those we will Southport Yacht Club in SYnC 7

The Power Boat Committee under the guidance of Ken Tregeagle, Steve Manchester and Peter Brown, again held the raft up for Anzac Day in front of the Cenotaph at Broadwater Parklands Southport. There were 10 Boats in the raft up and a special thanks to all for helping to fly the flag for SYC. The spectacle at Dawn with the letting off of Flares was quite spectacular. Commodore Kerry Noyes, Vice Commodore Sail Ray McMahon and Vice Commodore Power Graham Webb all laid wreaths at the services on behalf of SYC. We have a wonderful relationship with Southport RSL and we look forward to working together in the future. From the committee room I am pleased to announce that Peter Brown has now been appointed as Chairman of The Power Boat Committee taking over from myself after almost 3 years at the helm. Want to get involved in Navigation Rallies? Please give me a call and I will be only too happy to get you started. You will learn about your boat and how to use your instruments. 22 Cruising at syc EASTER 12 DAY CRUISE BRIBIE island AND BEYOND On Good Friday with clear skies and perfect Easter weather 11 Club vessels gathered at Dux for an evening BBQ prior to commencing the Easter extended cruise. Saturday morning with Charma leading the flotilla travelled to Peel Island anchoring in Horseshoe Bay while Samadhi made a detour via Victoria Point to collect some Easter Goodies. With wind from the south-east Horseshoe Bay was a little animated so it was decided to move to Deanbilla Bay for a more sheltered anchorage. Sundowners on board Samadhi concluded the day. Sunday morning to the delight of children on nearby vessels the Easter Bunny appeared and delivered eggs to our cruising boats. At 0800 with Cats Away in the lead we proceeded to Tangalooma anchoring just south of the resort. Afternoon drinks and nibbles ashore concluded the day. Tuesday morning, we took our tenders to the Gold Coast Boat Club in Tipplers Channel where we attended the ANZAC Day service after which we all returned to our home ports. The cruise did not go as planned but this sometimes happens in the northern end of Moreton Bay where everything is very weather dependent so maybe next time we will get to Bribie. It was however a great cruise with lots of laughs and wonderful companions. Distance covered on the cruise 158 NM anchorages 7. We look forward to seeing the Cruisers on the water for our next Cruising event, should you be interested, please contact the Club for further details. Ray Gilbert Cruising Committee On Monday with a deteriorating weather report we decided to remain in the lee of Moreton Island and moved to The Sand Hills which proved to be a far superior anchorage than Tangalooma. Morning coffee on Water Music and sundowners on Aquilla finished a perfect day. A less than ideal weather forecast put Bribie Island and the Pummicestone Passage out of the question so led by Samadhi we travelled across to Deception Bay entering the Caboolture River and anchoring at Beachmere. There are shoals at the mouth of the Caboolture River which made it necessary for our deepest draft vessel to anchor in Deception Bay and the holding ground at the mouth of the river was not ideal so plans were brought forward and the flotilla travelled to Scarborough mooring at Moreton Bay Boat Club marina. A great meal ashore and all was well. The weather forecast proved to be correct with south east winds 20 knots so we spent another two days at Scarborough taking public transport to visit Redcliffe on Thursday. Friday with winds south east 15 to 20 knots and decreasing the flotilla left Scarborough at 0500 rounding the Castlereagh Point beacon just before first light and set a course west of Mud Island to Peel Island anchoring in the Lazaret Gutter for a late breakfast then moving to Deanbilla Bay. Afternoon drinks and nibbles on Samadhi concluded the day. Saturday, we proceeded to Canaipa Point where we were joined by Suella. In the evening, all ashore at 1730 for an excellent Chinese meal at the Russell Island Bowls Club, Sunday, still at Canaipa a lazy day then a BBQ and drinks ashore at Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron Browns Point Down Canaipa Passage and across Jumpinpin put us at Dux for the final night of the cruise with another BBQ and much merriment ashore. 22 in SYnC Southport Yacht Club

sailing at syc nsw nacra state titles 2017 Over the weekend, Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th March, Southport Yacht Club sailors represented the Club well at the NSW Nacra State Titles. Held at Trial Bay/South West Rocks, this was the first major regatta for the new Youth Nacra 15 fleet, with nine (9) Nacra 15 s competing at the regatta. Congratulations to Chris Noyes and Joe Sabin, taking out first place in the F18 division, Warren Guinea and Mark Philips coming in first in the 5.8 division with Michael Guinea and Commodore Kerry Noyes closely following in second place and Ashleigh Swadling third place in the Nacra 15. Trial Bay was a great venue for this Regatta. Racing was conducted straight off the beach with the campground adjacent to the old Trial Bay Gaol. Saturday s racing held winds up to 15 knots, with Sunday up to 10 knots and a South-East swell, making for great racing conditions. All Nacra fleets were of good sizes, with competitors from as far away as Cairns and Townsville. joel turner SYC high performance sailor Joel Turner has remained very much in the spotlight, going from strength to strength in his sailing career. Turner started the year with the fantastic results of first (1st) place at the 49er Nationals in Adelaide. He was then selected as crew to sail in the M32 World Match Racing Tour. Competing in the Australian Match Cup at Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club in Perth, the team finished just off the podium in fourth (4th) place. The team continued competing at the Geographe Bay Cup, qualifying in first (1st) place for the World Match Racing Tour held in Sweden, 3rd to 8th July The newly developed M32 crew comprises of Joel Turner, fellow 49er team member David Gilmour, Jakob Wilson and Tom Blaauw. In between the M32 tour, Joel and David changed vessels competed in the Western Australia Etchells State Championships, again with an impressive podium finish of second (2nd). Joel s 49er Olympic Campaign to Tokyo 2020 is still very much underway with himself and David making great progress as a sailing duo. The majority of training has been held off the waters in Perth and Sydney with a lengthy list of competition ahead of the duo in Europe. Upcoming regattas will see the pair competing in Germany, Denmark and Portugal, just to name a few. SYC wish Joel all the very best with his upcoming ventures. 1. Chris Noyes and Joe Sabin 2. 24 @ southport yacht Club sailing - Vice commodore sail Lest We Forget These were the words that rang out loud at the recent Anzac Day Commemoration. Southport Yacht Club was proud to be a large contributor to this fabulous day, hosting a Marine Guard of Honour. At dawn, a flotilla of 10 SYC boats moored off the Southport Cenotaph set off white flares to commence the dawn service and red flares to commence the 9am service. These 10 vessels, made up of both power and sail boats, added another dimension to the emotion of the day, showing the compassion SYC has for our friends at the RSL and our country s great history. It was probably the most talked about thing on the shore at the service. A huge congratulations to Ken Tregeagle who organised the flotilla and spent hours the afternoon before getting the boats in place for dawn. While I m talking about Ken, he s had his bobcat at Dux since November doing some reclamation work. Over the last 30 years our two-acre property has had the bush and scrub encroach considerably and it was time to reclaim our land. The entire two acres is now useable again including trimming the foliage on the beach so we can now all enjoy the magnificent sunsets and the silhouette of our boats (not to mention keeping an eye on them dragging). We can now plan what foliage we want to grow there to make it an even better venue that we can be proud of. A massive thanks to Ken plus the members and staff who have assisted him in this clean up. I never tire of letting my fellow members know just how well our sailors are doing on the National and World stage. The vessel Retuned, owned and skippered by Graham Sherring and proudly assisted by his great crew recently took out third place in the 2017 National Sports Boat titles. Australian Team member Joel Turner continues to reach the podium on almost every event he enters on the national stage. Plus of course Mathew Belcher, who would have to be the SYC s most successful sailor and quickly becoming one of Australia s all-time greats just continues to win around the world recently claiming their sixth World Cup title in Hyeres, France. Mathews influence in mentoring our junior sailors will no doubt assist to keep the SYC on the podium through all classes around the state and country. It seems that whenever there s a major regatta on lately our SYC sailors are bringing home the bickies. I am sure I speak for the entire Club when I tell them how proud we are of their achievements, well done to all of our sailors. Ray McMahon Vice Commodore Sail In July our fabulous Sailing Committee will be disbanded and elections will take place for the new season. I would like to thank Scott McInally, Ben Downey, Chris Noyes, Graham Sherring, Drew Jones and David Hows for the hours and hours of work you have put in over the last 12 months. I hope in my next article in August I am welcoming in the same people back to the Sailing Committee. I would be very proud to work with them again next year. Their efforts have not gone unnoticed by myself and the rest of the Board. Our great Club continues to move forward in leaps n bounds and the next 12 months will be no different. There are some great plans in place and I m excited to be a part of them. Our Management team are working their backsides off to stay on top of everything and they are doing a great job. It is an honour to work with them. Until the next issue, bye for now. Ray McMahon Vice Commodore Sail 24 in SYnC Southport Yacht Club

sailing academy The Sailing Academy is thrilled to announce that syc began the Tackers program in April. It is a mass participation, pathway program from Australian Sailing that has an emphasis on fun and games while learning to sail and control a boat. This is a three stage, 20 hour per stage program for 7-12 year olds to learn to sail and then continue to sail in our sailing team on a Wednesday evening. Each stage runs in conjunction with the school terms, currently on a Saturday morning. The program starts with Tackers 1 Having Fun, where Kids sail in pairs learning the basics while having fun. The course has a focus of non-competitive learning through games with structured sessions run by our qualified instructors. The sequential progression for the sessions allows children to build confidence and interest in sailing while having fun in the Broadwater at Hollywell. Please contact the sailing office for available dates, times and further information. The junior sailing is progressing great guns with 15 plus juniors sailing every Wednesday, with loads of support from our fantastic coaches. Most are racing in our Autumn sunrise series which kicked off on the 30 th April and moving into the OTBD racing in the afternoons. We also have a number of boats from the sailing team and the performance team heading to RQYS for the Optimist State Championships. The performance team is moving along with massive support from the SYC Coaches and the local Australian Sailing Team who have been taking time out of their busy calendars to coach the growing fleets of Lasers, O Bic, Sabots and Optimists on a Tuesday and Thursday evening, while supporting them at away regattas. SCHOOL HOLIDAY CAMPING TRIP FOR THE PERFORMANCE LASER TEAM During the Easter holidays, a group of sailors from the performance laser team decided to get together and use the DUX Anchorage facility on South Stradbroke Island for an overnight camping trip. Planning was a bit haphazard, but when Jack wanted to eat chips for dinner Melanie took over and planned out all the food. Bacon was on Dylan s mind so he ended up with breakfast duty! After catching a ride from one of the parents, they made camp and spent the rest of the day swimming, playing intense rounds of Marco Polo and exploring the area. They made a fire and roasted marshmallows, rode boards down the sand dunes, fought over a game of Uno and lots more. Apart from Tom and the Water and not quite enough snacks they survived the Camping trip and are all keen to do it again next holidays. Leigh said somehow we all came together to pull this journey off. Grace loved the experience it was great to see my friends outside of sailing. Our squad became a lot closer after the trip and it was great getting to know everyone a bit more Surely there are more stories to tell but maybe not to us. Quick shout out to Callum for not being able to come. SYC Laser Team Funsails are continuing to run through the Winter, Saturday and Sunday mornings at both Main Beach and Hollywell. I look forward to seeing you out on the water soon! Rob Adams Club Coach Southport Yacht Club in SYnC 25

sailing performance program senior sailing - my performance journey The Southport Yacht Club High Performance Program has helped me to improve my sailing through the mentorship of Mathew Belcher and fellow SYC coaches. Even though I have only been sailing at SYC for a little over a year, the guided coaching of the incredible staff has propelled my knowledge and ability in sailing forward. With the High Performance Program, I have seen dramatic improvement in my position in club and school sailing regattas for which I have SYC to thank. I wish for only one improvement in the program - that the time of the sessions be increased so that we can spend more time out on the water gaining experience. At the moment, I really need to work on race starts as I am relatively new to the world of racing in sailing. The coaching of Mathew, a two-time Olympic medallist, has helped me to become a better sailor in such a short period of time. For instance, Mathew s mentoring on race starts and technique when sailing upwind has opened the doorway for me to improve my race positions and my overall sailing ability. I have been able to correct many misconceptions and technique, due to the superior coaching of the High Performance program. The program has also helped me to become a more versatile and better prepared sailor to combat any condition or situation. Furthermore, I am grateful to share this experience with like-minded young people, who share a real passion for the sport of sailing. Calum Lockett junior sailing - my performance journey We joined the performance program when it started last year. We are 10 and 8-year olds, sailing our Sabot Tomahawk together as a 2up team. All week we look forward to training days. Since we started with the team we have learned how to gybe properly in higher wind, improve our upwind sailing and mark roundings. Our starts are getting better too but need some more work. This term we are looking forward to working on our boat handling and starts as well as tactics for each leg of the course. Our results since we joined the team are improving too: SQSA Selection Trials Lake Cootharaba 1st Handicap, 4th overall SQSA River Titles at BSS 3rd overall Battle of Waterloo at DPSS 2nd Maryborough Easter Regatta at Hervey Bay 1st overall Our goal this year is to do well at the Sabot Nationals in Manly. We think we are the luckiest kids in sailing to have such great coaches and mentors as part of the Performance Sailing Team to help us be better sailors. 27 sailing performance program SAILING PERFORMANCE PROGRAM UPDATE It has been a great term for the Sailing Performance Program with 39 young sailors taking advantage of the exceptional opportunity to improve their sailing skills with Mathew Belcher, Brendan Casey, Shane Smith, Shelley White and our own Coaching staff. Part of the Performance program is to help members take responsibility for their own sailing. This term we have added Regatta reports and Training reports so our team members can do some self-reflection after participating in significant regattas and training camps. This helps the Coaches with identifying areas that they can focus on for upcoming training sessions. 16 of our team members have been very busy flying the SYC banner by attending many different away regattas with some fantastic results. But more important than the results is that by attending these regattas, the sailors are forming great relationships and are bonding to form the SYC Team. They are looking after each other and helping each other both on and off the water. term one training awards Congratulations to all the Performance Program sailors who took part in the term one Sailing Team. It was great to see all of you having a fantastic night celebrating your achievements after 10 weeks of after school training with a sausage sizzle and presentation of achievement awards. Southport Yacht Club Commodore, Kerry Noyes presented the various awards to the team members. While Harry Hogan received overall Most Improved there were many achievements and commitment awards accepted including an award for Sailing Backwards. Well done team members, we look forward to seeing you on the water for term two! We have also had four of our Laser Performance and High Performance Team members attending the Queensland Sailing Team trials in Brisbane. We wish them all the best for the selections due at the end of April. We are very excited as four of our Sailing Team Members have now been selected to transition to the Performance Program. This means they will stay with their Sailing Team on Wednesday afternoons and then have the opportunity to train with the Performance Team on the weekend. This ensures that not only are they ready for the faster paced environment of the Performance Program, but gives them time to purchase a boat if they haven t already so they can start attending away regattas. Using TeamApp has been a great success for communication with all the team. We use it for updates on scheduling, regatta results, Q&A between members and the coaches not to mention happy snaps from training and regattas. Our strategic plan for next term includes, Individual training plans for each team member at the performance and high performance level, a bigger team to attend Youth Week and Sail Brisbane and to attract more members to the Program. We continue to look for sponsorship and funding to help with costs related to the program, so if you can help in any way, please contact Bronwen Hemmings via: Marketing.Manager@southportyachtclub.com.au Southport Yacht Club in SYnC 27

offshore racing Hello fellow sailors, Drew Jones here, a passionate sailor and member of Southport Yacht Club. I will be writing the offshore article for in SYnC magazine. I have been a longtime reader but short-term writer. The offshore sailors have had an eventful calendar in the past three months with hotly contested racing. The offshore fleet has been expanding with the addition of Russell Birse s X-Yacht, XVitesse and Michael Daley and Brian Aitchison purchasing Envy, a Hick 39. The summer series was completed with a series of 12 race days featuring windward leewards and passage racing. The ultimate winner in IRC was Fred Bestall s Auric s Quest closely followed by David Hows in Ocean Gem and Painkiller OP, skippered by Rod West. PHS honours went to Ocean Gem, Auric s Quest and David Chadkirk s Cyclone. The offshore passage series so far has completed the Cook Island Race, Surf to City, Flat Rock and Julian Rocks Yacht Race. Surf to City saw Auric s Quest finish first (1st) on handicap in PHS from Danielle Hutcheson sailing Onyx and Steve Czapp in Turbulence. With no wind at the start line of the Flat Rock Yacht Race, brought skippers and crew a game of tactics, both out wide and close to shore. About midday the wind piped in to an unexpected knots on the nose making it a hard beat to Flat Rock at the tip of North Stradbroke Island. Again, Auric s Quest showed its pedigree with a runaway win on both line and handicap honours from Painkiller OP and Ocean Gem. Cove. Saturday night saw a fun karaoke night ashore at the bar area, where the crews continued the night singing and dancing. Sunday saw some inclement weather but racing continued. The results are in! The team of Upstart, Turbulence, KD Girl outsailing the team of Ocean Racer Chaser, Beer Ballast and Christina to win the inaugural Interclub Challenge Trophy. It is anticipated that 2018 will see a much larger fleet competing for the honours. Easter saw the running of Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race. We had two entries Auric s Quest which didn t start due to rig issues and Turbulence which finished the race in seventh (7 th ) place in the PHRF Veteran Division. The Winter Series Offshore started on Sunday 23 rd April with three windward / leeward races in 15 to 18 knots. A great result for the Skipper, David Chadkirk and his crew who achieved the perfect start to the PHS series with a prefect three out of three wins from Ocean Gem and Painkiller OP. IRC sees Ocean Gem leading the series. That is all for now, more news from the water in the next issue. Until then, happy and safe sailing Drew Jones Offshore Representative On the 24th February a fleet of 10 Yachts started in the 100 nm race down to Julian Rocks. First on handicap in PHS was Onyx, Sean Allardice skippering Fourlove, followed by Auric s Quest. IRC line honours and handicap again went to Auric s Quest. At the time of going to print the OD Passage series is wide open in PHS with Auric s Quest only two points ahead of Turbulence with two races left, The Mooloolaba Marathon on the 5-7th May The IRC is also a close series with the final event to determine the winner. Auric s Quest on 7 points from Ocean Gem and Painkiller OP both on 11 points. An exciting finish to a hotly contested passage series. We wish all competitors the best and safe racing in the final two races. To complete the three months of racing we also had two special events, the Burleigh Bash sponsored by Seabreeze Industries; Steve Quann and the 2017 Interclub Challenge to Couran Cove sponsored by Stefan s Boating World and our host Couran Cove. The Burleigh Bash saw a fleet of 28 yachts compete for prizes donated by a very generous Seabreeze Industries. First was Auric s Quest winning a Waeco fridge/ freezer followed by Graham Sherring s Retuned and Michael Daly on Upstart. The Interclub Challenge between Hollywell and Main Beach sailors was well contested with eight yachts racing to Couran Cove on Saturday then racing back on Sunday. It was a great fun social weekend with the facilities at Couran Cove including kayaks, stand-up boards, swimming as well as great food and beverages. Berthing was provided at a very reasonable cost due to sponsorship from management at Couran Love Sailing? We ve got you covered. As partners with several state yachting bodies and class associations, we re putting a little extra wind in the sails of many young Aussie sailors. We re proud to champion tomorrow s champions. gillmarine.com 28 in SYnC Southport Yacht Club

2017 nz optimist nationals Whilst many of our SYC members were celebrating Easter or competing in the Brisbane to Gladstone yacht race, two of our junior sailors Blake Wilson and Isaac Schotte ventured over to Napier, New Zealand to compete in the 2017 New Zealand Optimist Nationals. The 177 open fleet competitors had a nervous start to the regatta, the open ceremony on Thursday kicking off as the eye of Cyclone Cook reached Hawke s Bay and the venue for the regatta. A few competitors were caught by disruption to flights and appalling travel conditions, but it had little impact on Blake and Isaac who had spent a couple of days training pre-regatta out in the beautiful Hawkes Bay. The first day of racing on Easter Friday dawned bright and sunny. In the Bay sailors were confronted with a residual four metre swell (following the cyclone) and a light and variable breeze proved to make it an extremely challenging day for all sailors. Despite a few withdrawals due to seasickness, two races were completed on day one. The second day saw sailors on the water for over six hours with the four races being held. Whilst the sea state had improved from the previous day sailors were still faced with two and half metre swell and a confusing chop that made sailing an Opti challenging. The breeze was still on the light side but was constant for most of the day. At the end of the qualifying rounds both Southport Sailors Blake Wilson (5 th ) and Isaac Schotte (26 th ) had done enough to secure places in the Gold Fleet for the finals. Whilst the first day of finals saw competitors greeted with a nice warm sunny day, unfortunately one of the key elements in sailing, the wind was missing, so after spending a few hours out on the course the day was called off without a race being completed. The final day of the regatta began an hour earlier than scheduled and also had the sailors needing to add an additional layer of clothing as the temperature dropped significantly. Again, sailors had to contend to light breeze on the course, due to an impending storm and a dying breeze only two races were completed on the final day. In the first race of the day Blake as able to finish in second (2 nd ) place meaning that going into the final race he was in a strong position for a podium finish. Over the course of the week consistency (2,6,2,9,2,1,2,21) over the eight races saw Blake secure a third (3 rd ) place finish. Our other young SYC sailor Isaac Schotte (who was in NZ representing the Australian Optimist Sailing Team) finished the week in 32 nd place. A big congratulations to both Blake and Isaac. The 2017 Optimist Queensland Championships was hosted by RQYS on the 29th/30th of April. It was great to see our sailors developing skills on display in the variable conditions and in the open fleet SYC boats were leading from the front. Blake Wilson managed to win every race except for an UFD in race 2 but the depth of the SYC squad had our other charges taking turns to push him all the way. Isaac Schotte put in a consistent performance two finish second overall. Angus Wheatley finished in 7th and Sam Martland & Austin Cross both had multiple top five finishes but carried a higher score to place them in 10th and 11th respectively. Adelaide Pullin, Lachlan Wheatley, Ben Lincoln all shown glimpses of good form as they continue to improve. In the intermediate fleet a solid start from Hudson Mckee had her in 6th after day one but turned up the form on day two with a 2,2,4 score to finish 3rd overall and first female and newcomer to the performance team Alex Albu managed to take a race win on his way to 7th overall. The team has shown good progress in the past few months and with this weekend providing a good regatta platform the sailors can now train on the weaknesses in time for the next big event weigh Youth Week in July. We look forward to seeing the Optimist sailors back on the water again soon! Shane Smith Coach, Sailing Performance Program Southport Yacht Club in SYnC 29

sailability gold coast As I now have my own metal inserts, I can reveal that the average Sailability volunteer, being of a certain vintage, contains about a kilo of high tensile titanium holding their various joints together. A traveler s worst nightmare would be to be in an airport security queue, behind a group of volunteers on their way to a Hip Replacement Convention, as each one in succession sets of all the bells and whistles and brings out the loaded guns. On the plus side, it does mean that the already valuable volunteers are getting all the more valuable as scrap metal prices recover. Ben Noonan As the President for 2017, I look forward to maintaining the special relationship Sailability has with Southport Yacht Club for our mutual benefit. Sailability operate every Tuesday at SYC Hollywell between 8am and 2pm and are always looking for new volunteers with or without sailing experience or metal inserts. Check out the website sailabilitygc.org for details. In this edition, we feature the sailing experience of one of our volunteers Ben Noonan. I first came to Sailability in 2012 when there wasn t any concrete laid yet at Hollywell from the Sailability shed to the boat ramp and anyone trying to wheelchair through sand will know what a difference it makes. After not too long the concrete went down and I thought I d arrived at a good time. Kevin Garcia recommended Sailability to me and I enjoy my time there every week a lot. I cannot think of a better way to volunteer my time than taking people for a sail on the Broadwater. Ben Noonan sailing Ross Manning s Skud I was given training by various volunteers for a few weeks practicing in the 303 Access Dinghy on Thursdays until the time came when I could take my first client out for a sail on a Tuesday and I haven t looked back. I started competing in the season talking 1 st place in Dinghy Club Champion Open B Division, Season Handicap Winner & Access Dinghy Champion. In January of 2016 I competed in 2 events at the National HANSA class at Robina solo in a Liberty and with Ross Manning in a Access/HANSA 303 double. The event was also the QLD state titles and I came a close second to Chris Ruston in the Liberty class in the club s boat Primary. I am currently looking to get back into Sunday Club racing and put a call to all Volunteers and members that would assist in rigging and moving of both myself and Primary. I am also looking to move to a two Skud (Paralympic Two Man Boat) situation where Sailability can train sailors to the highest level to compete on the world stage and to be able to practice against each other to develop a strong disabled sailing team. Highlighted with a fashion parade of beautiful race wear and hats by local milliner, Lisa Donovan, this event is always well attended and is a perfect opportunity for guests to get into the spirit of the racing season and support our fund raising at the same time. On behalf of the Associates Committee, I thank all of you for supporting our events and making them so successful. We look forward to seeing all of you at our coming events.
