1 The St. Louis Admirals R/C Model Boat Club Uhttp://stlouisadmirals.comU 0B0BROADSIDE Commodore Jim Schwinkendorf.. (636) Secretary Chris Kunz (636) Vice-Commodore Dave St. Clair (636) Treasurer George Kirby (636) Editor Jane Rivers-Chapman (314) NOTICE: The next meeting will be held on July 2, 2012 at St. Stephen s Episcopal Church, 33 N. Clay Ave, Ferguson, MO NOW HEAR THIS FROM THE BRIDGE Over the years, I have managed to be a member in a number of various clubs. Probably my first serious club was the Purdue Railroad Club when I was attending college in West Lafayette, IN. The club members were all students and rail fans, and we worked together to build and operate a good sized model railroad layout in the basement of the Purdue Memorial Union. We had some great times and I learned a lot about model railroading. After graduation, marriage, active duty, and becoming employed, I again found myself associated with a couple of model railroad clubs. Again, there was a common interest, some interesting people, and the clubs served as a basis to learn some more things about the do s and don ts of building model railroad layouts. When I couldn t work on my own layout, I found that membership in a club gave me an opportunity to keep my interests going and to learn things. Over the years with some railroad career moves, I have managed to build and tear down a number of train layouts. Upon retirement, I found that I now had a bit more time to indulge in things that interested me, so I joined a club called the SubCommittee. The group members were all interested in model RC submarines. While I had a little background in RC boats, it was not nearly enough to proceed with building an RC model submarine, and then having the courage to actually go out and sink it! So to speak. Being a member of this club was worth its weight in gold, for the members were eager to help me with the planning, construction, sailing, diving, and recovery of my precious sinking boat. They were and are a great bunch of people, all with a common interest in boats that sink and they provided for a tremendous learning opportunity for me. And then I joined the Admirals. Are you seeing where this is going? Belonging to a club can be a lot of fun where you meet interesting people who have a common interest, and where you can learn a lot of fun things. And to me, that s the magic of belonging to a club like the Admirals. This year I have tried to assemble a number of fun sailing opportunities, various members have been there to teach and answer questions, and we
2 hopefully have a good time. We have had a number of sailing sessions, a picnic, a couple of public displays, and more things planned for the good sailing weather. Membership in a club is a good thing. We make friends, meet interesting people, solve problems, dine together, and generally have an enjoyable time. We really couldn t do that without being a member of the Club. So when you get an opportunity, do two things. Reflect on how good it is to be a Club member and then encourage others to join us. A club is a group of interesting people having a fun experience. Pass the word, and see you at the pond.. After the break members agreed to a motion that Robert Schmidt will build a paddlewheel boat donated to the club by the family of Richard Schaumberger. The boat will be raffled off at a future time with the proceeds going to the club treasury. Dave St. Clair brought the Pink Princess tug boat for members to see how a servo mechanism can be used for a speed control in small scale boats. He will give a detailed presentation at the next meeting. She is operated by New Orleans Paddlewheels, Inc. She was built by Halter Marine at Moss Point, Mississippi along the lines of a turn-of-the-century sternwheeler and was christened into service in September She is 190 feet long and 40 feet wide. She has three decks, two of which house three dining and banquet rooms and a third top deck for covered outside seating. Her gross tonnage is 397. She is docked at the Poydras Street dock adjacent to the Riverwalk and New Orleans Hilton Riverside and Towers. Her master is Captain Al Christian. She was built for the 1984 World s Fair Exposition in New Orleans, Louisiana. Her Paddlewheel diameter is 24 feet.
6 Dave and Dee St Clair Provided these pictures from their anniversary trip on the Creole Queen Here is information Paul Kirby and I thought you might find interesting. Chris-Craft is a privately held American manufacturer of civilian powerboats based in Sarasota, Florida. The original company, Chris-Craft Boats was founded in the late 19th century by Christopher Columbus Smith and became famous for its mahogany hulled powerboats of the 1920s through the 1950s. A 1928 Chris-Craft Cadet Christopher Smith built his first wooden boat in 1874 when he was 13 years old. He soon began to build more boats and joined his brother Henry in 1881 to begin producing boats full time. In 1910, the brothers joined with other partners to form the Smith Ryan Boat & Engine Company. The company name was changed to Chris-Craft in The Detroit area company became well known for their sleek racing boats in the 1910s and 1920s. The company continued to be independent until it was acquired by Shields & Company and National Automotive Fibers in They renamed the company Chris-Craft Industries, Incorporated.
7 The most popular Chris-Craft of the 20s and 30s were the runabout used by Clark Gable and Douglas Fairbanks. They were easy to handle boats. The most unique feature was that the Chris-Crafts were made out of wood, the decks were mahogany. In 1964, Chris-Craft launched the all-fiberglass Chris-Craft Commander. This dramatic new design was unveiled at the New York City National Boat show, perched at the top of an escalator on a giant, castered cradle. This first Commander was a 38' express hardtop with a 13' beam. The line of Commanders soon grew to include sizes ranging from 19' to 60' all "styled in fiberglass." An interesting museum to visit might be The Mariners' Museum 100 Museum Drive, Newport News, VA Phone: (757) For over seventy-five years, the history of the ocean and its relationship with humankind has been told and displayed in one of the largest maritime museums in the world. In 1930, The Mariners' Museum was brought to life by Archer Milton Huntington, son of railroad and shipping magnate Collis P. Huntington, who founded Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Company just a few miles from the Museum.
