3 Commodore Tom Pochereva First Friday is almost here! Join your friends and family on the lawn at KYC to enjoy the sounds of Frankie and the Drive Inns. Many thanks to Roselle Nottage and her Entertainment Committee for promoting this year s First Friday series of musicians that are providing a mix of great sounds for you. As you know our club manager, Ken Rakta, is out on leave and it is our hope that we have him back soon. The club is missing his support for our continued day to day operations. But it is great to know that Vice Commodore Dick Perkins has stepped forward to assist Dwayne Ancheta with on-site assistance. Jean Liu is back in the front office bringing her great smile, bundle of energy and handling Membership Services, your questions events to bookings for club activities. Chef Kyung and his staff held their second Tuesday Night Buffet themed "MONGOLIAN MADNESS" with added spices for those who enjoy a pleasant change for their taste buds! Stay tuned for more to come this month. Summer fun kicked off in June with the arrival of swim, sailing and tennis classes for our juniors. The seniors continue to enjoy the Thursday evening Bulkhead Race, tennis and fishing. The two big highlights of June were the IRF's Summer Circuit Regatta and the Relay-For-Life fundraiser which featured the Waihole Ditch Band. A special guest appearance by popular ukulele recording artist Taimane Gardner was a real musical treat enjoyed by all. Coming up this month: sailing has the famous "Kalakaua Cup" race on July 4, and the tennis players have a tournament July 11. Enjoy tales from the Volvo Ocean Race by KYC member Mark Towill on July 28, our KYC Transpac Party and the UCP Pywood Cup on August 1 and the Riddle? Regatta August 2. A repeat reminder, the longer hours of daylight accompanied by increased activities at our club mean that extra care must be taken. Safety should always be on the mind of members and staff during this period. Please keep a special eye out for children at all times. There is no towing of people on surfboards or other devices in the harbor and no swimming as well. It was especially alarming last month to hear of a child who jumped in behind a large power boat as it was backing into the bulkhead just feet from some very large propellers. I look forward to seeing you at our events and enjoying our club s many activities and facilities. Vice Commodore Richard Perkins Now that the kids are out of school the Summer Youth Programs are in full swing. I want to apologize to the parents who had their kids in the first week of swimming classes that had to be cancelled. Refunds were made to all parents. We now have a swimming instructor in place and a full time lifeguard for the summer. It s great to see all the participation in the Junior Sailing Program as well as the Tennis Lessons. By the time you read this, we will have had our second Tuesday Buffet Dinner. Based on the success of the first Tuesday Italian Buffet, a Mongolian BBQ Buffet scheduled for June 30, was the second in a series of Tuesday Buffets. Look for the next Tuesday Buffet later this month. Since the kids have been out of school we have also noticed that Wednesdays and Fridays are getting very busy. We have been working with the caterers to make the food ordering / food pickup process at the window more efficient. They have added another staff member so you should see improvement at the window compared to earlier this summer season. You may have noticed that we now have two new standalone BBQs to replace the south BBQ for the summer season. These BBQs are an interim solution as we will be repairing the existing south BBQ after the summer season but we did not want to interrupt the busy summer BBQ season to repair the BBQ at this time. The contract to repair E-Pier with Sea Engineering has been signed so we are now waiting on the permit process. I will have updates each month on the status. July 4th weekend is going to be a busy weekend. On Friday, we have Frankie and the Drive-Inns playing music as part of our First Friday Music series and Saturday is the Kalakaua Cup competition with several boats coming over from Waikiki. For those who have not been to the club recently Jean is back in the office and is doing well. Stop by and welcome Jean back to work. Enjoy your summer at the club and be safe on the water. See additional safety information in this issue of Telltales Please be sure to display an up-to date window decal on the driver s side front window of each vehicle. Vehicles without decals are subject to towing at owner s expense. Decals are issued at the office during normal business hours. Rear Commodore Tom Wood Aloha all. Wow here we are at the first of July, and the height of the summer season. Kids are out of school, days are a wee bit longer and warmer, and the Club has been super busy. Fleet activities afloat and ashore have been going very well in large part due to the many folks who work hard to make events happen. We had a great turnout for the Commodore s Challenge on June 19 with in excess of $1,200 made to pay for the container to ship boats for the racers going to Santa Cruz for the El Toro North Americans. It was a lot of fun and I think everyone had a good time. I even got a chance to get in a good workout (inside joke if you weren t there you missed it, so you should plan to be there next year, because you never know what s going to happen)! Summer Circuit is complete and the sailors both members and guests who participated had a great series. Congratulations to the winners, and to all the competitors for participating as well as to Staff Commodore Rick Osborne and all of his team for pulling off a great regatta and setting the bar extremely high for other clubs to meet. Thanks to Staff Commodore Clark Fremgen and all those who worked Race Committee for doing such a great job and to our excellent Port Captain, Bob Hurd, for making all the slips and boat moves just work out the way they needed to. A special Thanks to Staff Commodore Charlie and Iwalani Stone for hosting the race committee for the Regatta on Naupaka you rock! The Fishing Fleet has had a good month with lots of participation. While we haven t announced the winner for this month s tournament yet, I watched our weigh-masters weigh a 194 pound marlin brought in by member Doug Peebles which I bet is in the running! Fourth of July weekend will be busy around the Club. First Friday will kick off the weekend, followed by KYC hosting the Kalakaua Cup offshore race on the Fourth. Come on out and enjoy the festivities. Committees and volunteers have been working to develop maintenance and improvement plans for our piers and slips, and while it may not seem like a lot of movement yet, a lot of preliminary work has been accomplished and you can look forward to some significant efforts on these critical facilities later in the year. The Finance and Planning Committee, with the help of members like Bill Leary are doing a great job of moving the ball forward on critical plans to improve the conditions of our infrastructure and make sure that these facilities are around and available for all of us for years to come. As noted last month, the arrival of summer also raises the possibilities of severe storms here in Hawaii so please take the time to check your boat and your berth for safety and compliance. Your efforts in this area will also help protect our valuable pier assets from damage should a storm occur. Lastly a thought to consider as we move through the busy summer months: The purposes for which this Club is organized are to provide a medium to its member continued on page 4

4 Port Captain Bob Hurd Aloha It s summer and the boating scene is becoming crowded. There are still the Saturday and Sunday regattas when the sailors launch their dry moored boats around ten A.M., and need to have space at the bulkhead to prepare for the races. The fishing fleet also has needs, as well as families heading for the Sand Bar. Does this sound like a chaotic scene? It can be. But if members try to take others into consideration, weekends at the bulkhead do not have to be contentious. We have a marvelous Club, but we do have only so much space, so we have to use it wisely. The Marina Regulations lay out how the harbor is managed. There is a Regulation pertaining to occupying un-assigned spaces at the Club, and it states that mooring at an unassigned space, the bulkhead, end of G pier, etc. is limited to 2 hours without being assigned to the spot. Overnight mooring is by Prior approval for all boats in the water. Call me before you decide to leave your boat in the water somewhere, I may have a different plan than you do, but I may also have a slip that is vacant for the weekend that I can lend to you. But, you may have to take your boat out of the water and take it home if there is no room. The Kalakaua Cup sailing race is coming up for the July 4 weekend, and we will have some visiting yachts at the end of G pier, and probably some at the bulkhead. The racing season is ramping up, and there will be more events during the summer. Please refer to the Telltales calendar for the schedule of races during the summer. Please remember that the State restriction pertaining to having any alcoholic beverages on your boat at the Sand Bar will be in effect during the July 4 weekend. There will be a safety zone marked off by buoys near the Sand Bar. No restrictions apply outside of the safety zone. Have fun, stay safe, and I ll see you on the water. 1 Year and Counting!!! 2016 Pacific Cup FUN Race to Hawaii In approximately one short year, yes, it descends upon us quickly, we will be waiting in anticipation for boats to cross the finish line, ready to serve up Mai Tais, attach boat lei and all the fun things we do at KYC. The tally is now at 47 boats and the race can accommodate up to 70 boats. The FUN race to Hawaii will see its first start on July 11, 2016 from San Francisco. We expect early boats to arrive at KYC approximately July 22 with festivities to follow. The FUN race can be extra fun when racing with or against someone similar. All In the Family: If the folks on your boat look familiar, maybe it's because they ARE. Pacific Cup has always had a soft spot for family enterprises, whether it's a multi-generational voyage, a parent-child adventure, or the honeymoon of a lifetime, a prize will be awarded to the best-performing family effort. See the NOR for details on all of these awards and start recruiting your family to sail with you to sweep these categories! Check out for details and to see who s already signed up. You ll see some familiar boat names. There will be plenty of opportunities to volunteer here at KYC so if you are new (or a long-time member) to the club and are interested in finding out how you can get involved, contact me via text, phone or for more info! Contact me at sandypc@earthlink.net, Sandy Ragley, Pacific Cup General Chair Rear Commodore Tom Wood cont. from pg 3 families to participate in the sport of yachting, boating and other recreational activities, to promote and foster interest in and knowledge of yachting and boating, and to provide a meeting place for social gatherings. Sportsmanship and good fellowship shall dominate all activities of the Club. You may not recognize these words right away, but they come from our By-Laws, and are the stated Purpose for the existence of the Club. As we go about our daily activities and enjoy the Club that we have, it is always good to keep these simple words in mind, and use them to guide our behavior. Respect and take care of the staff, the equipment, the facilities, and each other while you enjoy whatever activities you undertake. Deckhands Sandy Ragley Do you like to plan Keiki Parties and meet new people? Be sure to sign up ASAP if you want a spot in one of the upcoming sessions! KYC and WYC are sending a group of kids and a 20 foot container with 12 boats to Santa Cruz Yacht Club for the July El Toro North American Championships. So far we have raised over $4,500 for this event. This should cover the shipping and we hope to raise another $1,500 to cover entry fees. We have some long and short sleeve dry-fit breathable sun shirts for sale at the Junior Club house. They are $20 for short sleeve and $25 for long sleeve. Zachary Kaan came up with the cool green HYSA logo on these shirts. 6 Spectators gather on the hill for the big event Commodore s Challenge Friday June 19, 2015 After an afternoon of (not so pretty) practice for Dick, Tom Would Go and Chico the stage was set for the big event. Commodore Tom Pochereva was heavily favored and the donations poured in buying him minutes and holding him back. Dick injured his back and donated to send a proxy, Tommy Henshaw in his place. Chico and Tom Wood also "saddled up" and the race was on. A donation by Rick Osborne promoted Malia Johnson Osborne to future commodore level and she started with the commodores. An additional contribution got Pochereva off the bulkhead in a reasonable amount of time so he could be a factor. Various other contributions manufactured headstarts for members of the fleet and the race was on. While the commodores raced two laps inside the basin the rest of the fleet sailed around the coral patch. In the end, even with extra 720 degree turns to do Tommy "El Perko" Henshaw beat out Commodore Port Tack to capture the title. Finishing under his own power and completing the course was Chico Can Do and swimming to the finish was Tom Would Go. The result was, however, mission accomplished, goal exceeded. We collected $1,305 in donations. Many thanks to our brave Commodores, Rick Osborne Jr., Dee Darby and the Hawaii Sailing Foundation, the voice of Bullship, Martin McMorrow, the Juniors who sailed and who promoted the event, AND OF COURSE, Thanks again to all of you. KYC again opened its heart and wallet for a good cause in a generous way. 7 International 14 Fleet Andy Bates May 31, 2015: Summer Series II. The I-14 fleet had a glorious day of tight racing for the start of the second series for The wind ranged from 22kt gusts to zero wind in the numerous holes found around the course. Race 1 The first race was the windiest; The big puffs got up to 22kts and the I-14 fleet cooled off with some swimming. The start saw Tom Pochereva and Shelley James(1104) covering the fleet. Andy Bates and Kevin (1160) were at the pin end of the line and got a header. Elise Leroux and Cecilia Janssen (1106) were in the center of the line and got off cleanly got a favorable shift on the port lay line and rounded first, followed by 1104 and All the boats had good sets and very quick rides down to the leeward mark where things got interesting! Tom and Shelley pinned Andy and Kevin past the mark, but capsized when they jibed. Andy and Kevin had dropped and tacked to get back to the mark that allowed Elise and Cecilia to move into first place got a good shift on the right side of the course and caught up to 1108 at the weather mark. The run down was again very exciting finished first, 1108 second and 1104 made-up time but was unable to catch-up and finished third. Race 2 The second race saw the wind moderate down to 12kts won the start again was late at the port end and 1108 was recovering from an untimely capsize again got a good shift on the port side of the course and rounded first followed by showed excellent speed downwind passing 1160 by going down the center of the leg while 1160 went out towards Coconut Island followed and made-up some ground during the race but was unable to make contact with the leaders kept the lead and finished a couple of minutes ahead of Race 3 The final race was shifty and puffy. All the boats were on the line for the start was first to the weather mark; followed by 1108 and again passed the leaders with superior speed off the wind. At the turning mark 1104 had a small lead over 1108 and 1160 was slowed when they could not drop their kite due to a knot in the halyard. The next beat was very shifty and places changed between 1108 and Eventually 1160 caught up to 1104 at the weather mark only to capsize when the wind stopped for 15 seconds and the flipped to weather went on to finish first and win the tie breaker for the day recovered in time to finish second and 1108 finished third. Our next race is July 12. The wind has been great the last couple of Classboat days. Come out and join the racing and social event we have following the race. Mele Pochereva made outstanding homemade brownies for this race-----mahalo, Mele, from the fleet. Race 1 Race 2 Race 3 Total Tom and Shelley Andy and Kevin Elise and Cecilia Offshore Racing Fleet Frederic Berg 20 knots and counting well not at the start! Trois Amis (Frederic, Luca) takes off with a big jib and a big lead, but that didn t last as the trades kicked back up to 16 to 20 knots from 5 to 7 knots at the start. 007 (Don and Eric Aakhus) raced a perfect race with great execution, separating them from the next three boats by 45 seconds. Then it was Mayham (Steven Eder and Munch, HYC), Intuition (epaint Hawaii, Mike Bacon and Rich McCreedy) and Moku pe a (Bill Leary and Jeff) all correcting within 26 seconds. With nine teams in all the fleet was treated to a gorgeous day straddling both Kaneohe and Kailua Bays. The fleet is looking forward to the next event, the Short Handed Race on July 25th.
