3 COMMODORE Frederic Berg What a start to 2018! Why you ask? Our General Manager, Norman Cote has decided to part ways with KYC. The Flag Officers, Ralph Foulger, Vice Commodore, Mike Van Woerkam, Rear Commodore, Tom Wood, Staff Commodore and I have decided not to rehire a GM just because that is what we have always done. Rather we will be evaluating if our existing staff can handle the management of the Club in a team structure. We will be assigning duties in line with deparment responsibilities and the staff so far are embracing the changes. Time will tell, but I, for one, am very optimistic. Have you ever asked yourself, how does everything happen at this Club? It seems to just magically occur, but You guessed it, all events at the Club don t happen magically, rather a member, just like one of us, volunteers to lead or help out. The board of directors, the committees and fleets are all made up of volunteers as well. In fact volunteering is what makes this Club special and a great way for new members to get involved. In the past, the Club celebrated it s volunteers with a year end volunteer appreciation party. Because those that hadn t volunteered were left out, this year, thanks to outgoing Director Lindy Rollo's brain child, we will be celebrating both volunteers and those that would like to volunteer in the 2018 Volunteer Fair on January 28!! Mark your calendars. It s a little like a job fair with Committees, Fleets and especially the Pacific Cup represented with tables members can visit to learn about the various activities and opportunities at the Club. Sign up to your favorite activity and get ready to rock. The usual fare of pupus and a drink will be available to all who participate. The 2018 KYC Volunteer Fair is certainly not an event to miss. Happy New Year and see you around the Club. Your Commodore whose sole responsibility are the commodes. Mahalo, Ralph Foulger Vice Commodore VICE COMMODORE Ralph Foulger REAR COMMODORE Mike Van Woerkom Aloha and Happy New Year! Let me first say thank you to the KYC Members for your support and trust in allowing me to be your Rear Commodore for I am humbled and honored to step into this role and hope to do my part to provide the best services I can. With that being said I would like to thank all the Fleet Captains up front for their time and effort to help make this 2018 one of the best here at KYC. Without all of you the club wouldn t be what it is. I look forward to working with each one of you. A special thanks to our returning Regatta Chair Pete Stokka. Pete has offered up his time and talent once again and will remain Regatta Chair for If you see any of these individuals around the club don t hesitate to thank them for their efforts in making 2018 another fabulous year. The 2018 calendar is already filling up with great events and on the water action packed racing. Please check the KYC website and Telltales for calendar updates and event information throughout the year. Don t miss our first US Sailing Rules Seminar being offered on the 9th of January. This is a great opportunity to brush up on some of the rules that all sailors find themselves debating on the docks after the race. With the rules fresh on everyone s minds, come on down to the first bulkhead race of the year, on the 14th of January. This will be followed by a US Sailing Club Judge Seminar and US Sailing Club Race officer seminar on the 20th and 21st respectively. This is a terrific opportunity to give back a little to the club by learning what goes into being a judge and participating in race committee. A big Mahalo to Tom Pochereva for offering these seminars! As said before, I look forward to seeing everyone around the club and especially out on the water! 3

4 JUNIOR SAILING DIRECTOR Jesse Andrews We have some exciting news! With much interest in the Open Bic Sailboat over the past two years since we purchased four used boats KYC is purchasing 5 new Bics at a price of only $2700 with shipping. With the private boats at the club this will give us a fleet of 15 Bics at KYC! These boats are fun, fast and almost completely maintenance free. The are made out of plastic, have a modern skiff shape with a self bailing cockpit and carbon mast. We have two sailors signed up so far for the Bic North Americans at the End of the summer in Ontario Canada. In other news we had a windy and very fun Laser clinic held last month at WYC. We had 30 participants with winds up to 30 knots!i think some of tthe he kids would have set a speed record if they had brought a GPS wi th them. There was lots of volunteer help and many enthusiastic Laser sailors that Came away from the clinic with much more knowledge and heavy air experience! Some other events that have been going on with our junior sailors in December was the 420 state championships, Tuesday after school training, and the Myrdal's Laser training sessions. We will look to make the aftershool sailing a class in the Spring and hopefully have Le Jardin school practicing at KYC with us as well. More news about this to come by next month! Aloha, Jesse Bic training Some upcoming events: HYSA El Toro clinic help January 13 &14. 5 SPRING 2018 KYC JUNIOR SAILING PROGRAM KYC's 2018 Spring Junior Sailing Classes are held every Saturday from February 17 th through May 12 th. Whether or not a student was enrolled in a sailing class before, the Spring Sailing Program is a great opportunity to get more individual instruction in smaller classes than the Summer Program. As a primary benefit, the Spring classes are normally a smaller class size so students can take advantage of a better instructor to student ratio. It is also a 13-week program vs. the 10-week Fall program. Students in the Topper class will also have more opportunities to sail by themselves and accelerate up into other classes at a faster pace. These classes focus on safety, fun and sailing skill building. In addition to regularly scheduled classes, the program offers participation in local regattas, Friday night Dinghy Races, and Sunday Laser and 420 Races. Novice Topper Sailing - This is a Learn-To-Sail class for students aged 8 to 18. If a student has little to no sailing experience or has taken a few years ashore and wants to rediscover sailing, this is the class. Classes are primarily taught in Toppers, our beginning sailboat. Boats are provided for all students enrolled in this class. Curriculum will include the basics of sailing, including parts of the boat, points of sail, and boat handling. The goal of this course is to have fun in a safe and educational atmosphere. Classes will be held on Saturday from 9:30AM to 12:30PM. Introduction to Racing - This is for the sailor who understands the basic fundamentals of sailing: rigging, points of sail, docking and terminology. Sailors must be competent in capsize recovery and be able to sail a boat by themselves. Sailing will be in El Toro s, Open Bics, & 420 s and will introduce racing skills. The goal of this class is to improve sailing skills and to gain a basic understanding of sailboat racing and tactics. Classes will be held on Saturday from 1:30PM to 4:30PM. Advanced Racing - No messing around!! Junior Sailors interested in more advanced levels of sailing including racing, tactics, boat handling, and boat maintenance, should enroll in this class. Students who participate in this class will work closely with students of all ages to improve sportsmanship, leadership and sailing competence. This class will require more time and effort on the part of the sailor and will require attendance at local regattas. El Toro/Open Bic classes will be held from 9:30AM to 12:30PM. Laser and 420 Classes will be from 1:30PM to 4:30PM. *** Special Notes for Intermediate and Advanced Class Students: Additional fees for regattas are $ Parent participation is appreciated to help with loading and unloading of the trailers and transportation of sailors to and from the regatta sites. Sunday Class Boat Racing- On scheduled Sundays throughout the Fall, 420s and Lasers are welcome to race in the KYC Classboat races. The start is at Noon and there will be three races a day around the harbor buoys. There is no entry fee for the series. If you would like to use one of KYC's 420s, a reservation must be made for the boat through the KYC Office. Costs Please refer to the Spring Junior Sailing Application for pricing details. *Please note that there are no refunds after Friday February 16 th and class costs will not be pro-rated for missed days. Registration & Pricing Registration paperwork will be handled through the KYC Office. Please call or KYC@kaneoheyachtclub.com for an application. All appropriate registration forms along with full payment must be completed in order to guarantee a place in the class. For further information contact Jesse Andrews, Director of Sailing, Kaneohe Yacht Club, , ext. 122 or by andrewsjesse@gmail.com Class Requirements Coast Guard approved Life Jacket (Type III) and Reef Walkers or closed toed shoes are required. 8 INTERNATIONAL 14 FLEET Andy Bates There is a lot of excitement in the I-14 fleet going into The I-14 World Championships takes place every other year. In 2016 the event was hosted in Carnac, France. Boats from all over the world converged on Brittany for a wonderful week of sailing, eating, and drinking! This August the I-14s will converge on San Francisco Bay at Richmond YC. The event will take place on the famed Olympic Sailing Circle in front of Berkeley and just to leeward of Alcatraz Island. The wind and sea conditions will test the I-14s to their limits. Staying upright and not breaking the boat will be the main determinants. KYC is hosting the PAC RIM race, which will be the largest preliminary race before the Worlds in SF Bay. The PAC RIM is again partnering with Pasha Lines, our sponsor two years ago. Their work with youth programs here, and on the mainland is commendable. We feel honored to have them agree to work with youth sailors again. Local I-14ers look forward to working with the Pasha Lines team again. The PAC RIM is scheduled for April There will be all kinds of new ideas showcased at the event in preparation for the Worlds in August. There will be a youth Hula demonstration at the awards banquet on April 9. The performers are from the Palma Settlement. They put on a wonderful show two years ago. Members are invited to come down and see the show as a well as get a preview look at the newest ideas being developed in high performance dinghy racing. On April 8 at 9:30AM there will be a free advanced youth clinic ashore, and I-14 sailing for select Juniors; weather dependent immediately following the clinic. This is always one of the highlights of the event for the racers and juniors. Our regular Class Boat series of 16 races begins in early February. We have two I-14s for sale in the fleet if you want to up your game and sail one of the most challenging and fun boats in the world. Come down and look at the starter boats that are for sale. 10 TENNIS FLEET Donlei Darnell What was it that Captain Kangaroo used to say?. All the news that s fit to print and fresh fish? Well here is the Tennis Fleet news for December as we start a new year 2018! The Holiday Dinner was held December 30th and what a great time everyone had! We had seven countries represented: Germany, Ireland, Italy, Jamaica, Mexico, Scotland and the United States. Decorations were done by each table, with the theme very clear. Germany was notable for the beer steins at each place setting and ladies wearing dirndls; Ireland table was calm, beautiful and green and then the ladies did their version of the River Dance!; Italy s table was noticed for the many candles and the lovely statue of the Italian peasant girl; Jamaica, with it s fruit, bright yellow accessories and Rasta theme was vivid; Mexico and their large sombreros hardly fit in the photo; Scotland was plaid, plaid and more plaid and Auld Lang Syne; and the United States, all red, white, and blue, finished the performances with a rousing God Bless America, and everyone stood and belted it out.loud AND CLEAR. There was dancing and singing afterward.thanks to Margaret Peebles and Lou Darnell for music, slide show, and computer additions.
