3 Commodore Richard Perkins The Commodores, Board of Directors, and the Financial Planning Committee had a successful strategic planning session offsite earlier this month. We discussed this year s proposed projects and initiatives and started the planning process. I will be providing details each month as the plans progress. We have a lot of projects that we are planning to complete this year but with Pacific Cup in July we have a tight window to get these projects completed. By now you should have received in the mail the Special Meeting Notice scheduled for Friday, February 5 at 6:00 PM. This Special Meeting is an extension of the November General Membership meeting when we lost the quorum and were unable to vote on a motion to increase the dues by 5%. The only item we will be voting on is the motion for a 5% dues increase to be effective on April 1, We will be voting by ballot not by a show of hands as mentioned in the notice. A blast will be sent out to provide more details. I encourage everyone to come out and vote so we don t have a quorum issue again. First Friday Music will begin immediately after the meeting is over. The last weekend in January kicks off a busy month of February with the Boat Blessing on Saturday and the Opening Day Bulkhead Race on Sunday. (see details / pictures later in this issue) The Class Boat and IRF seasons start on February 6 and February 13 respectively and the Thursday night Bulkhead Races kick off on February 25. As everyone knows by now the 50th Super Bowl in Santa Clara will feature the Denver Broncos and the Carolina Panthers on February 7 and the club is planning another great Super Bowl party. Details will be coming out soon. Valentine s Dinner is planned for Saturday evening February 13 with a great menu and music. Reservations are filling up so please make your reservation now at the front office. The Club Manager Selection Committee has made great progress by completing a new job description and posting the job on several websites. A decision was made not to hire a search firm and use several websites and resources the members knew to start our search. We have received a lot of resumes and now we are reviewing all resumes. Our goal is still to have a new club manager on staff by the end of March. In the meantime, Dwayne and all the staff have contributed to the club run smoothly. I am sorry I have to end my article on some disturbing news but I want to address two recent reports of members not showing the Aloha spirit. In the last three years, I have heard a lot of complements from visitors about how members of our club are so nice, friendly, and helpful. Many guests and visitors from other yacht clubs have mentioned how welcome they feel at the club. These two recent reports were members being discourteous to both a guest and an employee. I ve always believed we treat people like we want to be treated. With that said, I want to encourage all members to show the Aloha spirit that our club is known for, especially to guests, visitors from other yacht clubs, and employees. All employees have also been told to be positive and show their Aloha spirit to everyone. I ve also instructed all employees to report any member who is discourteous and that member will be called before the Board. Please remember to show the Aloha spirit to all guests, visitors, fellow members and employees. Vice Commodore Tom Wood Aloha all, we are off and running for 2016 and things are happening at the Club! We have a very full schedule his year, including hosting the finish for the Pacific Cup Race. We will begin First Fridays once again in February, and with the conclusion of Boat Blessing, Opening Day, and the soon to be wrapped up Haul-out we are all set for a great year. The Board, Staff and Committees are working on making some improvements to various aspects of the Club, both our physical assets and other programs and processes. Stay tuned throughout the year for updates as we continue to work on sustaining the excellent Club that we all enjoy. Along those lines, we are beginning the process of modifying and updating the Club Rules and Regulations. We will be updating both Section I, Policies and Section II, Marina Regulations to make them more clear and readable. The Board has also noticed an escalating trend regarding compliance with some aspects of the Club Rules, so at various points throughout the year, we will be highlighting certain aspects that we see as significant problem areas using Telltales and other member communications. The Club Rules are designed to accomplish two primary tasks: 1) address issues that expose the Club to liability in some fashion, such as the current ban on any outside alcohol; and 2) create an environment that is most enjoyable for the maximum number of members. An example would be the prohibition on dogs on the property unless they are directly transiting to or from a boat. Each of the Club,as currently written, has a role in either or both of these functions and we would appreciate members taking the time to review the current Club Rules. They are available in hardcopy from the Front Office, and also on the current version of the KYC website. We are, of course, open to ideas about how to make the rules better in serving the two functions mentioned above. That said, no rule or set of rules can replace simple courtesy that each of us should display in our interaction with each other and the Club Staff. In the last week, we ve had several instances where a member has lost their cool in talking with either a staff member or another member over minor issues, and in almost every case the member has apologized after the heat of the moment has passed. Our Club is deservedly well known for its Aloha, family spirit, competitive climate and good sportsmanship. I believe we should all strive to keep it that way. Stay safe, watch out for each other, and I hope to see you all at the Club or on the water. Rear Commodore Frederic Berg Aloha, Big Mahalo to the high attendance in our first Fleet Operations meeting of the year. As promised, we will stay focused on the events in the coming months to minimize the time these meetings take away from family on weekday evenings. Also, to better integrate the Club Operations and Fleet Operations, we will experiment with combining both meetings. Only committee members with coordination needs for their upcoming events need attend. We think this will make the volunteer hours the Club asks of the membership more valuable. With the Boat Blessing and Opening Day behind us we are now ensuring we are prepared for the season ahead. To that end we have to thank Andy Bates for stepping up as Race Committee for the Friday night races. Andy will be heading up changes on Friday nights with the addition of other dinghy sailing such as 420s, FJs, Toppers, and Open Bics. This should add to the already very successful Friday night racing and is aimed at getting those sailors who have just come off other sailing programs and a re looking to continue their sailing experience as well as novice adult sailors dipping their toes into the fray We also are grateful for Sime and John Gross for stepping up to provide the finishes for the Bulkhead Races. This is sometimes a thankless job, so a giant Thank you Race Committee!! " when finishing could help remedy the situation. The drink ticket format will change a little, with must be present to win receive a drink ticket as the new normal. Results will be announced, yeah probably about maybe a half hour after the last finishers. For winners to get a drink ticket they have to be present at the announcements. In keeping with the nascent tradition started by Staff Commodore Tom Pochereva, Commodore Perkins convened a strategic planning session again this month to gain insight as to what projects should be considered this year and in the years ahead. I urged that planning also consider how our fleets can to continue expanding knowing that we are capacity constrained with boat space at the Club. We re looking forward to great sporting activities this month and throughout the new season. Good luck to all participants. ARRRGGHHH! 3

6 A December Miracle By Glenn Clark (Editors note: Glenn Clark prepared a fascinating memoir of his experience as a teenager following his graduation from high school in upper New York State. He was accepted as one of 1000 plebes into the US Merchant Marine Academy at Great Neck, L.I. New York. His second year was a year at sea on US Merchant ships. As a Deck Cadet, he traveled from New Orleans to five Brazilian ports, even traveling up the Amazon River. He then crossed the Atlantic to the southwest coast of Africa visiting several ports there before returning to New Orleans. The account below relates what happened next.) Imagine, I m still a teenager and have visited these two FAR AWAY places. I was now assigned to Lykes Line ship Sue Lykes with a Russian Captain. The ship was as long as two football fields feet. With Europe still in recovery from WWII we were loaded with much cargo for Liverpool. We had 55 gal. drums of oil on deck, and much wire and chain was needed to secure them properly. We were loaded to our legal draft by law. There was only about 14 feet of hull between the water and the deck. Our course on the voyage would expose the ship to the bad winter weather on the unpredictable North Atlantic, December 1947! Our Thanksgiving was interrupted with rolling and pounding as the weather deteriorated. We have all been shaken by earthquakes, and on a ship, pounding waves will sometimes shake a 16,000 ton vessel like a toy, and probably about 6-7 on the Richter Scale. Sleeping was difficult -- and when you moved about, the rule was: One hand for you and one for the ship! The pounding and rolling became much worse! The vessel s engine was slowed down in an effort to appease mother nature! Early on December 2nd all deck hands were awakened, told to eat, and then muster to help secure deck cargo that had gotten dangerously loose on deck. The ship was rolling about 25 plus and the wind and seas impressive. The Sue Lykes was moving very slowly in the ocean and in a north direction, and wind, seas, and rolling waves coming from aft toward the right side of the ship. The spray was almost continuous. Some progress was being accomplished under there extreme conditions! The sun was now above in the sky on the right side of the ship. Most of the crew was securing cargo on the right side deck, only three of us were on the left. One seaman was on the flying bridge as Lookout! At 0942 I heard the words, lookout! shouted above the wind noise! I looked over to the right and saw a 25 to 35 foot wave off the ship s side lurking above us before it crested and broke on the deck where the crew was working. Some sunlight showed through the green wave, that was perched above us all with the seeming intent to push all into the 52 water of the North Atlantic. The wave broke when it splashed on the right side of the ship, scattering seamen like toothpicks. The vessel rolled wildly to the left, and I grabbed a wire in my left arm and another sailor in my right, and we all were submerged in the cold water, as the heavy vessel healed way over to the left. I don t remember thinking how bad this predicament was, or even being afraid. The vessel finally rolled to the upright position, and we were slung up on deck! I was bruised and cold and wet. The man with me insisted he was hurt. We got him inside along with the other seamen, many of whom had savage cuts, smashed face bones and some broken limbs. Waves were still breaking on deck. Then the bad news!! We were missing one seaman who had been working on the deck with us on the left-port side! The ocean around the ship was full of debris and drums. We searched until it got dark around 4:30 PM. No luck! the Captain had instructed the radio operator to ask the RAF rescue unit for help in looking and removing the more seriously wounded. They were unable to launch-- winds over 60 and limited visibility. The RAF had made a wise decision! Seven hours later, our injured were taken off the ship in the port of Liverpool. All lived to share the cold tales about the water in the North Atlantic. The officials and US counsel personnel, too many to itemize, arrived on the ship to conduct an inquiry about the December loss of life and near swamping of an American cargo ship. With ease I can visualize the vivid picture of the wave as it came crashing down on the ship and scattering the crew on the deck. Awesome! 6

13 Tennis Fleet Donlei Darnell Asian cuisine was the featured food at the January KYC Tennis Fleet Potluck on January 9. The tables were more tropical looking with the new fleet tablecloths made from fabric donated by Linnea Brooks and made by Donlei Darnell ; black background bark cloth with red and pink flowers. The January tournament had 19 players and was organized by prospective member Richard Le C ler c with seeding done by Greg Siok. It was a beautiful day for tennis and play went on from 8:30 until after N oon. The winners for this first play of the year were Women : 1st - Linnea Brooks, 2nd -Terry Beuret, 3rd - Sherri Phillips and Donlei Darnell. Men : 1st - Rob Rietow and Bob Babyack, 2nd - Richard LeClerc, Harvey Minsky, and Ko Isayama, 3rd - Bob Yoder and Aaron Phillips. Additional players were Steve Brooks, Betsy Denzer, Jean Fernie, Keegan Giles, JoAnn Goebert, Pam Isayama, Susie Jannuzzi, and Lynn Pease. The Co-Fleet Captains, Rob Rietow and Kit Beuret, have come up with a very fun schedule for the fleet this year. There will be the two annual large tournaments with the Tom Collins in May, and the Clare Lang in September instead of October. Each of those months will have a catered dinner in the evening so players don't have to worry about potluck dishes on those busy days and also encouraging spectators to watch the finals in the late afternoon. Our famous Shrimp Boil Potluck will again be in August although the location will be at Doug and Margaret Peebles' home. And in June we will have a Courtside Barbe c ue directly following the round robin tournament. December will find us feasting on a catered dinner in the Long House as we usually do. The other months will have a special theme for food and you can read them all on the poster on the bulletin board. Being a member of this very active and fun fleet does not require playing tennis, although it is a lot of fun! The dues are $20 a person a year. There are forms in the office you can fill out and leave with your dues. Just ask that they be left in the Tennis Fleet box. You will be welcomed with good companionship, good food and lots of fun. Liz Meierdiercks has taken over the reins for the round robins, getting out the notices and keeping track of the food items as well as providing the paper goods and tablecloths. She and her assistant, Barbra Green, have added prizes awarded for various winners. Each month they will pick a different category to track and award the winners. This month it was total games won...the winners were Linnea Brooks, 2nd place and Betsy Denzer, 1st place. Next month it may be the most aces served or least games won or perhaps the most red items of clothing. What a fun addition to the event!!! The Ladies Round Robin is usually on the third Friday morning and is open to all KYC ladies and guests. All levels of play are welcome! Even if you haven't played for a long while and feel you aren't good enough, come on out and see how much fun you can have. This is not a KYC Tennis Fleet function and the cost is 50 cents. Everyone brings something for the potluck and it is always a delicious surprise. Please call Liz to sign up (H) or (C). Dorothea and Jane...Good Friends 13

14 SPRING 2016 KYC JUNIOR SAILING PROGRAM KYC's 2016 Spring Junior Sailing Classes are held every Saturday from February 20th through May 14th. This Spring we have expanded our classes from 11 to 13 weeks. We will be starting one week earlier and are keeping the prices very affordable at $5 to $7 an hour per student. Whether or not a student was enrolled in the Summer Program or some other session, take this opportunity to participate in our Spring Junior Sailing Program! As a primary benefit, the Spring classes are normally a smaller class size so students can take advantage of a better instructor to student ratio. Students in the Topper class will also have more opportunities to sail by themselves and accelerate up into other classes at a faster pace. These classes focus on safety, fun and sailing skill building. In addition to regularly scheduled classes, the program offers participation in local regattas, Friday night El Toro races, and Sunday Laser and 420 Races. Spring Sailing Program Schedule Novice Topper Sailing - This is a Learn-To-Sail class for students aged 8 to 18.
