COMMODORE Richard Perkins vice COMMODORE Tom Wood MEMbERSHiP REPORt Luke Kudray I want to apologize for missing the September Telltales. I was on the mainland and I had computer problems that prevented me from sending my article. I want to thank all members for being understanding and patient about the Long House floor resurfacing project. There is never a good time to complete a project like this and I apologize for any inconvenience it caused to the members. This project was long overdue but I think the floor looks really nice. If you ve been to the club lately, you ve noticed the repair to the Upper Deck that is currently in progress. We noticed that there was some dry rot and cracking under the railing posts causing the railing to sag We scheduled this repair to minimize the impact on members use of the Upper Deck and we hope this has not caused any inconvenience for members. The deck and the stairs will also be repaired and resurfaced. This repair should be completed in a couple of weeks. Many members have been asking about the status of the repairs for E and G piers. Details are currently being finalized with our vendor, Sea Engineering. The current discussions are to start the repairs on E pier in November and details will be sent out as soon as the dates are finalized. I want to thank in advance the members who have boats on both piers as there will be some inconveniences while these piers are being repaired. The second Newcomers' Pupu Party of the year was held on September 24 and we had a really good member turnout to welcome the new members. Again the members out did themselves as the Pupus were outstanding. The next Newcomers' Pupu Party is planned for March 11 so please plan to attend to welcome all of the new members. Finally, a BIG MAHALO goes out to the Deckhands who assist with the coordination of this party. The Annual General Membership meeting is scheduled for November 4 and we ve started our preparation for this meeting already. The official notice will be send out by October 20. Aloha all. We are ramping up to finish out the season for 2016 with a lot of fun and events over the next several months. September saw the start of Monday Night Football, and October will have two more Friday night music events, First Friday on the 7th and Third Friday on the 21st, so come on down and enjoy. If you ve been down to the Club lately, you can see some significant progress being made on improvements and repairs. The E and G Pier repair contract is underway with offsite fabrication, and work will commence on site shortly. You can expect that there may be some areas near both piers that are cordoned off for storage of materials, etc. in support of those repairs. For residents of both piers, please remain flexible and if you are asked to move a dock box, or otherwise accommodate the contractor doing the repairs, we will greatly appreciate your support. Lawn Tiki Torches have recently been replaced and are working wonderfully. The Upper Deck is undergoing some repairs for water damage, and upgrades to the railings. The flooring in the longhouse and surroundings has been repaired and looks much better as well. All in all, a great deal of effort to keep our club looking good and keep the physical plant in good repair. Thanks as always to the various volunteers who have helped put together the planning for these efforts. On the 5th of October you are invited to come down and enjoy a Bunco Night at the Club. Later in the month, on the 29th of October we will have both our Keiki Halloween Party in the morning, and our Adult Halloween Party in the evening. Also on the 30th we will have Cy Gillette Day. There will be more details forthcoming on all of these events so keep an eye out for those details. The Annual Meeting is coming up on November 4th so please mark your calendars for that and plan to attend. We need a good turnout so we can establish a quorum early and conduct the business of the Club. We will have updates on the year s progress and we will also conduct the election of officers for next year. 4 JUniOR SAiLinG DiRECtOR Jesse Andrews We've had a busy September so far with the Laser States, El Toro States, Bullship, Friday evening races and the start of Fall Sailing Classes. These events could not have been successful without the help of many volunteers. Kai Andrade has been the behind the scenes facilitator of the Registration, Notice of Race, Sailing Instructions and scoring. Pete Stokka has stepped up to help as the head of the Junior Activities board and helped out with a KYC motorboat spreadsheet. Ralph Folger has stepped up to take over Clark Fremgen's duties and has already made great improvements on the KYC Club motorboats. The spreadsheet was made to let everyone know what needs fixing and what has been fixed on the KYC motorboats. It's open to the public and can be found at l-1zdhusibct2hq/edit?usp=sharing Mark Andrade has been my liaison to the KYC Board of Directors and has helped in many ways. His help with fundraising, budgeting and general advise have been a great help to all! Jean and Dwayne and the rest of the staff also are always supporting the Junior Program in any way possible making it a great success! Lastly we have had generous donations from Connie Smales and Jennifer Herring that will pave the road for a successful future of the program! The Board of Directors and Club M anager Norm Cote have made many recent improvements around the club and they have been a great help supporting the program as well. Mike Furukawa helped install the new carpet on the KYC boat ramp which turned out great! Malia Johnson has been a great Junior Commodore this year spearheading this spring ' s sailcamp and other great activities. Andy Bates has stepped in to fill the shoes of Joan Wollenbecker to run the Friday evening races all year with the help of Maddy Kennedy. The KYC Instructors and helpers have also contributed above and beyond what I've asked of them. Thank you all! We had 30 competitors compete in the Laser States. We had sailors from Maui and the Big Island fly in for this event which was dominated by KYC's John Myrdal in Laser A and Gab ri e l El El Hajii in Laser B. This is the best turn out we've had in years! For El Toro States and Bullship we had four sailors come from California to take on the Hawaii fleet! This made for a great turnout with 25 boats in the El Toro States and 60 total sailors in Bullship!!! The last Friday night race took place on the 23rd of September followed by a potluck celebration. Thanks to everyone who participated in these events and especially Thank you Raoul Magana, Kai Andrade and Ken Fitzgerald-Case for Race Committee duties and to Yal Lim, Mele Pochereva and Kim Ickler for being this year ' s Bullship C hair, three people taking the place of one, Martin McMorrow who faithfully served for many years as the Bullship Commander. Upcoming events for the Junior Sailors are the last HYSA regattas of the year on Octob er 8 and 9. Seafest, the annual HYSA/Junior Sailing fundraiser hosted by the Hawaii Commodore's Association, will be held on November 5. We are have an A dult S ailing C lass in Toppers, 420s and the n ewly donated Cal 20 from Jennifer Durnin starting November 6! You can get more information on this and sign up at the KYC F ront Office.

2016 Hawaii Yacht Racing Association Singlehanded State Championships, Sept John Myrdal 2016 State Champ. Photo: Lauren Easley 6 On the morning of Saturday, September 10, KYC witnessed the congregation of 30 intrepid single handed sailors to compete in the 2016 HYRA Single Handed State Championships. Arguably the largest one design fleet and most competitive of the Hawaii State Championship regattas held every year, this regatta was no exception with the fleet composition consisting of current and former National and North American C hampions, Collegiate All-Americans, Olympians, State C hampions, as well as a strong contingent of promising you ng sailors who represent Hawaii s next generation of great sailors. For this event, the quintessential one design boat, the Laser, has always been used to decide this championship as it represents a significant challenge in a sailor's mental and physical abilities. There is no hiding behind an increased waterline, favorable rating or large checkbook to aid in one's results. The singlehanded nature places the responsibility and performance of helming, calling tactics, reading the wind shifts, boat placement, boat handing and fitness squarely and solely on one person. With over 200,000 Lasers in worldwide circulation and Olympic representation for both men and women, the boat's popularity among the elite sailors of the world to the recreational day sailor, are well documented. Day 1) With absence of a strong trade wind flow, Saturday s wind conditions were driven exclusively by squalls originating from the east which resulted in a wind range of 0-15 knots at various times on the race course during the racing. This coupled with degree wind shifts provided extremely challenging conditions for both competitors and Race Committee alike. No lead in any race was secure as the threat of fleet inversion was always possible when wind holes would develop and great breeze would materialize in places that were unexpected. Damage control in the effort to maintain consistency was the goal to strive toward as positions in most mark roundings changed constantly. The competitors were fortunate to have very competent Race Committee work led by Jesse Andrews and his team of volunteers who did their best to set square courses despite Mother Nature s intentions to the contrary. Their efforts helped to mitigate some of the variables, which made for the best racing possible and we were able to get 5 races completed on Saturday. Day 2) With five races completed and three to go, the point totals were tight among most of the top competitors. Individual strategies of how to advance up the leaderboard and game plans were formulated. Th ere is always a delicate balance, as keeping tabs on your closest competitors on the racecourse is important, but not at the expense of having a bad start or missing a shift resulting in a bad race, which is very easy to do in a fleet of 30 boats. The conditions proved to be more promising on this day with a steadier easterly breeze between knots. Tensions were high and the competition did not disappoint as the Race Committee was able to pull off three additional quality races to close out a quality eight race championship series. Until next year, Good Sailing! John

Clockwise: 1. Fun in Fiji. 2. Puanani leaving the Vida Marina in Fiji bound for Malolo Lailai island on 16 September. Kana (driving), Staff Commodore Mark, and Blossom Logan. 3. Noodle and Mark Logan on board Puanani. 4. Beautiful views from the hilltops. 5. Vuda Party. 6. Bay of Islands exploring the Lau group of Fiji. Jambalaya in the background. the KYC Cruising Fleet, South Pacific Squadron by bill noodle Leary i thought the KYC membership might be interested in the goings on of their 2016 ambassadors to the South Pacific. the sloops Puanani, skippered by Staff Commodore Mark Logan, and Jambalaya, skippered by Clay Hutchinson, are currently cruising in company in Fiji after stops in the Line islands and tonga. both boats left KYC on April 30 and had a quick sail to Fanning island just north of the equator. After four days in Fanning, the boats sailed to vava u, tonga where they spent six weeks enjoying vava u s sixty islands and protected waters. An overnight sail 160 miles north took the pair to niuatoputapu, the northernmost tongan island, where they spent two more weeks before departing for Fiji. One of the fleet s primary destinations was the Lau Group, a Fijian archipelago 120 miles to the east of Fiji s main islands. Off limits to cruisers and tourists until recently, the Lau Group is a journey back in time where traditional Fijian customs and sailing canoes can be found among spectacularly beautiful islands. the only hickup is that one must first check in to one of Fiji s main ports to the west before calling in at the Lau Group. After both boats checked in at Savusavu on the island of vanua Levu, Mark and blossom Logan left Puanani moored there and climbed aboard Jambalaya for the overnight bash east into the trade winds back to the Laus. the hardship was worth it, and Jambalaya enjoyed ten days in the Exploring islands before returning to Savusavu. Lori Lloyd and i joined Clay and Gail Hutchinson aboard Jambalaya in Savusavu in late August, and since then we have cruised west along the southern coast of vanua Levu, anchored for two nights in a deserted bay on an offshore island, and crossed bligh Water to viti Levu s northwestern coast. Jambalaya departed Savusavu a few days ahead of Mark and blossom Logan on Puanani, who were waiting for their son Kana to join them. Puanani caught up to us in Koroinasolo inlet on vanua Levu s western coast, a completely protected and landlocked anchorage where we had to make an offering of kava to the local chief in order to get permission to stay. We spent some time in vuda Point Marina on viti Levu s west coast enjoying all the services that well run facility offers. Live bands, outdoor movies, croquet, great food and drink, even a bar cart that rolls around the marina at 4PM daily hawking cold beers. While Jambalaya was in vuda Point, Lori and i jumped aboard Puanani for an overnight trip out to Malolo Lailai island in the Mamanuka Group. i had anchored there for a few days 39 years ago, and things have changed. back then there was a single newly opened hotel on the island. there were only 3 boats anchored offshore. today the island hosts four full fledged resorts, a harbor with at least twenty boats in it, an airstrip, multiple pools, bars, and restaurants, and more than 50 boats at anchor or on moorings offshore. victor Lozano is working on namotu, an island 5 miles to the south, but we weren t able to get together with our quick turnaround. Lori and i are home in Kaneohe now, but in a couple of weeks i ll be flying back to Fiji to help Clay sail Jambalaya to new Zealand. Dee Darby and i will be on the same flight. She s making the passage to new Zealand aboard Puanani. 12

CAL 20 FLEEt Jeff Cruise Aloha from the Cal 20 Fleet! Unfortunately, we are nearing the end of the 2016 season, but can t complain because we ve had a great year so far. Our last two classboat regattas were on August 28th and September 25th. We had awesome turnouts for both, with 12 boats and 10 boats on the line, respectively. For the August 28th racing, winds were a perfect 12 to 15 knots on the bay, and as a result, everyone was out on the rails hiking. After three races, Hana Hou took their first classboat victory, with two bullets and a second place! Congratulations to Jesse Andrews, Leah Magana, and Raoul Magana on their win (and every crew member skippered a race!). Our final classboat regatta of the season was on September 25, where we had ten boats participate in a real scramble for first. Hotel California won out, with Pilikia second and a three-way tie breaker for third, with Oink winning the tie breaker! next up we have the State Keelboat Championship on October 8 and 9! We now have 20 boats at KYC, so we plan on having a great showing for the State Keelboat weekend. As with last year, we plan on having party, pupu and live music at the gazebo on the Saturday evening of the regatta. So the entire weekend should be a blast! As always, if anyone is looking to get involved with the Cal 20 fleet, please me at Cal20KYC@gmail.com. On Saturday we had our First new Wahine tournament and it was a great success. We have not had a Wahine tournament in years so it was fun to see our beautiful Wahines out there fishing for a change. You may be wondering why it is the new Wahine tournament? Well that is because we added the ability to fish in the bay and the open ocean. We also kept one of the funniest traditions of the past Wahine tournaments and had the crews dress up as Wahines at weigh in! not necessarily a pretty picture. the only difference being because times have changed so much we couldn't decide which restrooms to use! Maybe a subject for the next board meeting :) Anyway, the winning boat was the Unreel, Captain'd by Captain billfish with a crew of 8, and the winning angler was our own Lucrecia Fry who landed a 4.8 lb Papio. the largest Open Ocean fish went to Captain Glen Camp and the winning angler was his wife Darla who landed a 13.8 lb Mahi Mahi. Congratulations to all who participated. All the inside boats caught fish while the outside boats only caught one. A big Mahalo to Captain Rick White for spearheading such a great event!!! We are already planning next years with ideas to make it even better!! Our season is winding down but we have a couple more great events coming up! i will list them below. Hanapa'a Captain billfish Please save these dates so you don t miss out on all the fun! Fishing Fleet Meeting: Friday Oct. 6:00PM Upper Deck Pot Luck Season Ending Sand bar Party, Sat. We had toppers, bics, El toros, Lasers, Laser Radials, and 420s. there were light to moderate air nights, heavy air nights and even some rescues. Our season started on April 1 and finished September 23 as our evenings became shorter. the Eco Flag was used as the Committee boat start and finish line. the flag promotes clean air and water through sporting events worldwide (ecoflag.com). the club invites non-members to come and join the fun. We had UH sailing team members, Hawaii Kai boat Club sailors and parents come and sail and assist with the races, and some sailors from WYC. Our KYC sailors hosted the guests with Junior Commodore, Malia Johnson setting the example. She organized a Pizza night on the last night to celebrate the final racing night of the season. there was good sportsmanship and sailors helping sailors during the entire season. by the end of the season we had 23 nights of racing with 65 races scored. there were 34 different racers who competed in one or more of the six classes of boats. in the end we had winners in each class and one tie. 14 VRSPORT INTERNATIONAL 14 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS Yacht Club de Carnac, France, August 21 - September 2, 2016 Photo Kevin Rogers I-14 Worlds Days 6 and 7 the weather was a repeat of Day 5 with great temperatures and a building breeze. the reaching legs were full-on double trapeze----spilling breeze out of the kite to make the mark. it was a long hard leg for the crews. We fouled our Australian friend, Phil Strong (He has come to KYC for 3 PAC RiMs) at the start and had to do our circles. We then settled into a good first beat going to the favored right side of the course. Some of the grey beards in the class helped us tune the rig after Day 5 and we had good speed with all the boats around us. We fouled a German boat at the leeward mark during the take-down on lap three. there was a little "drama" in the boat because we were just ahead of a pack of 14s at the time. the German boat and us ended up sailing the wrong side of the turning mark because of the current. We had to do circles again and could not catch-up by the end of the beat. We sailed the wrong side of the middle of the course to try and catch-up but lost two more boats and found ourselves in 70th again. After the racing long time 14er Leith Shenstone from Seattle took Kevin out for a "burn" in the big breeze. they had a great 2 hour training session while i socialized ashore! We have not had a swim for three races in a row. Our boat handling gets better each day. We had another big dinner at the town social club that was amazing; platters of assorted shellfish followed by a main course of three types of local white fish in a light, but very tasty wine sauce. We were invited back to the American house after the party ended at 10:30. the Japanese team did a Jungle Fire demo' for Kevin and Garrett who was having a birthday. Simona drove us home at midnight after our welcome was wore out. One more day of sailing before we re-pack the container for the journey home. Day 7 We were kept ashore as the wind came from the same direction with a little more velocity. the race started in 8kts and built-up during the four and half laps of two mile legs to a perfect 15kts. We were up on the line at the start and thought we had finally mastered the big fleet start-----but got pushed up by some yelling young brits' and it turns out were OCS (premature start!!). We were a third of the way down the line, did not hear a second horn and i did not see the individual recall flag, we sailed a glorious race without knowing we were over early; we had one breakdown, (a broker jib sheet) that cost us as Kevin had to go forward of the mast to repair and reconnect the blocks. then we had a nasty knot in the kite halyard a full leg later that caused us to run over the kite in big seas and almost hit the moored Committee boat! the kite was two thirds down when it went under both sides of the boat. We struggled to keep the boat upright and Kevin had to "do the wash"----pull the sail by hand back up over the bow while i pull on the retriever line and kept the boat from capsizing. that also slowed us down for a while!!! but we got going again and had a good race with the back of the fleet only to be told when we got ashore that we were OCS. Oh well----great sail in perfect conditions. On the social side we packed the container with to many "bosses"---which meant a three hour job took 6 hours to complete! the awards were presented right there at the Carnac YC next to the containers, the Crews Union had a very funny set of activities for select helmsmen to do, more wine and cheese, followed by a barrage of water balloons that stirred up the 250 people in attendance, and full on water fight happened! the crowd reconstituted at a bar across the street from our apartment and carried on to 3AM. We are packing our gear up for the train ride back to Paris Summary Kevin Rogers became an international Fourteener in the truest sense of the word----on and off the water! 2. We finally mastered tacking the bieker 5 in big breeze---no capsizes after Race 3. A little drama in the boat on my part, but Kevin was cool and steady. 3. We made lots of new friends---particularly the young German fleet members, and the middle of the brit' fleet. We renewed lots of old friendships from Australia and Japan. 4. Our new sails are very good and the rig set up finally worked by the end of the week. 5. We had wonderful food and hospitality in Carnac and at the YC. i exchanged burgees. they were surprised that KYC is almost the same. 6. Everybody was talking about the next Worlds' in SF bay last night. 7. Checkout the vrsport.tv site. 8. the i-14 Fleet is sponsoring an advanced boat building and repair clinic with sailing for juniors the weekend of Dec More to follow in the next addition of telltales. 14

tennis FLEEt Donlei Darnell September this year found the fleet scrambling to hold the Clare Lang tournament a month early. All ended well with a great tournament and super competition. the Clare Lang is one of only two real tournaments the fleet holds each year. the monthly tennis event is a round robin format with partners changing every set but the tom Collins, in May, and the Clare Lang, in the fall, are tournaments where you keep your partner the whole day..so very important to choose the right partner. the tom Collins is Mixed Doubles with each team consisting of a man and a woman. the Clare Lang has two men or two women as partners., and for both players must be KYC and tennis Fleet members. in the evening Susie and David Jannuzzi/White hosted a Greek Potluck in their lovely home. the food was out of this world in variety and delicious to taste. Didn t spot any togas but there was a great life size cutout of a very handsome Greek Warrior that was in many photos..check the bulletin board to see them. Hard to believe that we are thinking Christmas already but it is true!! We need to pick a theme and colors for decorations, as well as a menu for our sitdown Holiday Celebration which is on Friday, December 30th. Watch your for information about the the Fleet was very sorry to hear about Don brown. Don was a very fun player in the fleet several years ago and our condolences go out to Ruth Ann. First Place Winners of the Clare Lang Tournament 2016 Greg Siok and Betsy Denzer Second Place: Aaron Phillips and Margaret Peebles. Third Place Rob Rietow and Dana Nottage 15
