3 COMMODORE Frederic Berg Last month I spoke briefly about the character our members exhibit. Well compliments all around once again. The support extended to the flag officers and the board of directors in the face of adversity we experienced this month was heartwarming and I have to say, Mahalo. With the long hours it takes to correct the ship when the stuff hits the fan, knowing the membership has your back gives you the strength to move forward to do what has to be done. Oh and didn t we have a hurricane threaten our shores? The Club was well prepared thanks to Mark and his staff taking charge and clearing the lawn, setting up the sand bags and doing the myriad of things necessary to keep the Club safe during a hurricane. The Fair Weather Friends were in high gear keeping everyone informed on the latest evolution on Hurricane Lane. BTW does that mean we are now officially in a hurricane lane? Never quite got that one. And for anyone betting on the trajectory, you probably got a great lesson in the predictability of hurricanes as they approach the islands. Better luck next time. Hint: if the models don t agree on the trajectory, don t place any bets Last but certainly high on the list is the announcement that Shaun Myers will be stepping in as Club Manager on September 17th. Search Committee members Ralph Foulger, Wendy Jackson, Alison Leary and Tom Wood went through highs and lows for this search and ultimately found a person with integrity, a great background in food and beverage and excellent managerial credentials. Please join me in extending a personal and warm welcome to Shaun Myers as our new Club Manager whenever you see him. Your Commodore, whose sole responsibility are the commodes. Aloha Members, By the time you read this article, we will have been through Hurricane Lane and hopefully all is well at KYC. As many of you know, the Board has placed an emphasis on members and guests conforming to the rules of the club. The most frequent violations are: ~ failure to log guests in by sponsoring members, ~ outside alcohol being consumed on Club premises in violation of our liquor license and ~ small children running wild on club property without proper supervision. Club Members, please keep in mind that you are responsible for the actions of your guests while on club property. In addition, keep in mind that any group of more than fifteen requires registration with the office in advance. Members are allowed to bring guests to the club, however the same guests are allowed only twice a month. Please re-read our Rules which can be found on our website. The new front gate has been installed and is functioning well as of this writing. Our Annual General Membership meeting is rapidly approaching. As Vice Commodore I welcome any suggestions you may have to improve the club or its amenities for our members. Aloha, Ralph Foulger Vice Commodore VICE COMMODORE Ralph Foulger MEMBERSHIP REPORT Michael Swede Olson Membership Count as of August 18, 2018 SENIOR LIFE ASSOCIATE INTERMEDIATE FAMILY LIFE FAMILY JUNIOR NON-RESIDENT SERVICE TOTAL I hope everyone has had a great summer enjoying the club. It has been busy over the last few months and it's been great to see so many people enjoying their time here. We have had some great events here in the last month. The Riddle Regatta was a great success and let me tell you the Wizard of Oz costumes were amazing. You guys really go all out! I m already wondering what the theme will be for next year? We also had a great Joe Cochran Memorial Race and fundraiser for ALS. I don t have the exact number of what was raised but I know there were many members that opened their wallets for a great cause. Thanks to everyone that participated. Hopefully we can double the amount next year in donations and in the number of boats that participate. It truly was a beautiful day and event. With the beautiful summer weather we have had over the last few months the ocean is quite warm and from what we all experienced a week ago we know that means hurricanes. I think it is safe to say that we all dodged a bullet with Lane breaking up before doing more damage to the rest of the islands. It was really great to see so many individuals down at the club helping to prepare and taking measures to secure boats and even helping the KYC staff in securing the grounds. I just want to remind all to stay vigilant as the season for hurricanes isn t over yet. If you aren t on our list or have changed your contact information, please let the front office know. We want to make sure all our members are well informed of the latest information whether it be about activities or possible severe weather. Lastly don t miss out on some of the upcoming events. There are only a handful of Thursday night races left. Come on down and enjoy the end of the season. The Lipton Cup One Design will be taking place in mid-september. Let s hope KYC can keep it here for another year. Don t forget for all you fishermen to call in your fishing days. I know there are still some big ones out there to be caught. What ever it is you chose to do, enjoy the club and stay safe. Aloha. REAR COMMODORE Mike Van Woerkom 3

4 INTRODUCING KYC s NEW CLUB MANAGER SHAUN MYERS We are pleased to introduce KYC s new Club Manager, Shaun Myers. Shaun s career focus to date has been in the Food & Beverage industry. Shaun is very familiar with the private club industry as he enjoyed 8 years of employment at Mid Pacific Country Club. Shaun was an integral part of Operations. As an F&B Manger Shaun worked closely with Member Committees, the Board of Directors and Executive Chef. Moving onward and upward, Shaun made big professional moves as he elevated to General Manger for Big City Diner in Kailua/Kaneohe then to F&B Director for the Royal Hawaiian Golf Course. The past two years have been spent setting up the F&B Operations for this property as well as assisting with operations at three other locations within the company. Though Shaun enjoyed his position at Royal Hawaiian, and takes pride in the strong team he built, when the opportunity to rejoin the private club industry arose he took it with excitement. Shaun considered the position as KYC Club Manager to be the peak of his professional career. In addition to his expertise in running day-to-day operations, Shaun s greatest strengths are his deep understanding of financials, employee and member relations, a keen eye for detail and a mind that is both technical as well as creative qualities that we feel will be a great assets to the Club. We are confident that Shaun s transition into the team will be smooth in part because he already has a strong working relationship with our Office Manager, Tracey Akamine (they worked together at MPCC). Shaun will be on board September 17th. Please join us in welcoming him to the KYC Ohana! Aloha, Frederic Berg, Commodore 4

5 JUNIOR SAILING DIRECTOR Jesse Andrews We had one final week of Summer sailing in August after taking the previous week off for the Pacific Cup. It was a smaller group with public schools starting that week and some of the racing kids were off traveling to events. I want to thanks the instructors and junior helpers that made for an exciting summer full of fun and lots of learning out on the bay! I traveled with 7 junior sailors from KYC and HKBC to coach them at the 2018 O'Pen Bic North American Champs in Buffalo New York. What a great experience it was for the kids who displayed great sportsmanship and camaraderie on and off the water. They practiced hard all summer to see their hard work paying off at this regatta was really satisfying. The organizers kept the on the water racing fun with challenging obstacles such as "The Bridge of Doom", downwind slalom, mandatory 360 turns and capsizing! The first day the 52 boats were greeted with knot winds and sunny skies. KYC's Makani Andrews came out swinging, winning the first two races. HKBC CJ Perez would go on the next two days to win the last six out of seven races in light to medium conditions and the overall North American Championship title! JP Lattanzi sailed a consistent event to finish 4th overall in his first year in the Under 17 category. Mani Pahuatini finished 2nd in the freestyle competition and 12th in the Under 17 class. In Michael Kai Hochart's first North Americans he finished 7th out of the 30 Under 13s! All these guys and girls are hooked and I am happy to be coaching them at the Bic Worlds in New Zealand over Christmas break. There are already 12 Hawaii kids signed up for this event! This past Saturday KYC also participated in a monthly Hawaii Kai Bic event. This event still had remnants of Hurricane Lane with cloudy skies and 10 to 20 knot easterly winds. JP Lattanzi edged out Gavin Ball for the overall win! Mani Pahuatini finished third in the U17 category and KYC sailors swept the Under 13 division with Makani and Sage Andrews 1st and 2nd with Cameron Barra in third! They know how to have fun at the Bic North Americans Niagra Falls Starting line Our next big event is the Laser State Champs on 9/8 and 9/9 with a 10AM registration in the KYC lounge. Fall sailing Classes start on September 21. We are also looking to have more informal after school practice/training sessions on Thursdays for the advanced sailors. Also the El Toro State Champs and Bullship will be at KYC 9/29 and 9/30! Aloha, Jesse Makani Andrews Open Bic U13 NA Champ! Congrats to Team Hawaii for an outstanding regatta! Michael Kai Hochart, Makani Andrews, JP Lattanzi, Mani Pahuatini and the girls from HKBC 5

11 BACON BERGER - PACIFIC CUP 2018 PART 2 By Frederic Berg Ahh the Moet sure tastes good, but let s not get ahead of ourselves. To win this race, a wise man told Mike Bacon and Frederic Berg, you have to start. Who d a thunk it? So off we go with our duly prepared boat across San Francisco Bay to find our slip we paid for at the public pier near the Golden Gate Bridge. As we approach the pier, Mike looks a Frederic and asks, hey, is that guy talking to us? Not only talking to us, but offering us a slip at the Golden Gate Yacht Club. That s some hospitality. Next up, Bob Henderson shows up in the Berkeley Yacht Club tender to takes us back across the Bay to Berkeley and a warm bed for our last night. Sure beats rush hour traffic. Thanks Bob! The next morning we anxiously arrive on the boat after an hour drive (the launch was only thirty minutes) and calls to Jim Antrim, the boat designer and Kea Ho on where to go and how to get there. Jim confirms a northerly route to avoid a huge vacuum behind a low that was progressing north north west from Mexico right into the famed slot cars portion of the race and stalling there. Kea expertly advises, Let er rip man, just let the boat fly, you ll get there, it s downwind. Yah, duh! With that advice, Frederic announces two reefs in the main to start with. It must be said, if one thing Mike and Frederic are really good at, it s not criticizing each other. Not sure if that s because of a keen sense of their own vulnerabilities, and refrain for fear repercussions, but they don t criticize each other. So naturally Mike goes along with two reefs. All the other boats are full sail, but there s Bacon Berger with two reefs plodding along before the start. Needless to say it was a bad call. We started 10 minutes late as the wind dropped a few notches before the start and we probably lost another half hour before we finally shook those reefs. Lesson learned. Bacon Berger- Mike Bacon/Frederic Berg. 2nd Place Doublehanded Division, 6th Place Overall - First Hawaiian Boat Apparently there were other lessons to be learned, like why the heck wasn t there an acknowledgement to the position reports being sent? And really, you have to sign up for position reports on the rest of the fleet? And, why don t they show up once you do sign up? And those grib files being requested, where the heck are they? As it turns out Pac Cup was receiving position reports and sending acknowledgements and position reports but Frederic had changed the address in Iridium the night before the start so nothing was coming through on the original the outside world was using. Check. Bacon Berger, not receiving grib files for the next couple of days (until we sorted out the incoming mail address thing), took the cue from the routing software and took a northerly route. After three days of close reaching in miserable freezing cold 20 plus knot northerly, waves breaking over the bow, spray everywhere, and the second reef clew patch ready to part with the rest of the sail, we had to take the main down for repairs, so we put up the A5 (sailor speak for chicken spinnaker, the smallest one) and headed down about 30 degrees. Four hours later with the main repaired, Frederic pops back up on deck and it was like he d gone down the proverbial rabbit hole - a strange new world. The wind had shifted to the right about 30 degrees, the sun was peeping out from behind the clouds occasionally and Bacon Berger could almost hold the intended course with the big spinnaker. Whoa, take a moment to take it all in. Up goes the big black spinnaker, when the new patch starts to part just as soon: one down. Up goes the A2 spinnaker which is good for about one day until Frederic decided to wrap it tightly around the upper spreader and cries for help at 5:00 am. That didn t end well: two down. Some time after going down the rabbit hole we came across a boat in the Cruising Division. We exchanged pleasantries on the VHF radio, including an offer of cold beer (Bacon Berger has no refrigeration, running water, inside head, fixed stove, etc., nada) which we sadly but politely turned down (outside assistance?) and Bacon Berger happily viewed their masthead light slip below the aft horizon (the benefit of all the above missing parts). The days rolled by and the wind slowly begins to loose steam. Then on day 5 or 6 Bacon Berger received the first position report of all the other boats competing in Pacific Cup. We were second in our division, much to our surprise and ahead of the boats to the south with only the northerly boats ahead on corrected time! This was true inspiration for the team and was also the time the tradewinds began to finally fill in for good. Still following their router, we made our way to Hawaii, sometimes improving, sometimes giving up distance, but always sailing the boat faster than anyone in the fleet and sailing more miles than anyone in the fleet. The boat up to now, has proven to be quite versatile, whether jib reaching in strong northerlies or drifting through light spots dotting the route from north to south, Bacon Berger always seemed to pick a lane to sail in that kept us going fast and reasonably close to the desired course. Mike and Frederic have learned to let her rip. The great invention since the last time Frederic sailed across the ocean is routing software. Plug in your location, your polars (expected boat speed in varying directions at varying wind speeds), your destination, download the weather forecast in the form of grib files, run the software and Voila!, the boat s route for the next 10 or 12 days is laid out for you. It s so simple that even the veterans that have won this race multiple times have difficulty putting too much faith in the system, and decided to go south. The final approach proved to be quite a boat race between Bacon Berger and Wolfpack for first place in class. Ultimately the race went to Wolfpack with Bacon Berger in second by an hour and some change. Not bad for a couple of one eyed spastic hairlips. Oh and that delicious Moet? Yah, most of it spilled on a wave, but man, that one sip was great!! 11
