3 COMMODORE Frederic Berg VICE COMMODORE Ralph Foulger REAR COMMODORE Mike Van Woerkom Oh, they just told me it s March already, and I said, where are we marching? I know, not even close! If anyone has any reservations about removing a CEO or General Manager, have them ask the Flag Officers for help. They ve become experts, if the results at KYC are any indication. Complaints are down and staff productivity is up, that is if you don t count the complaints about not having a general manager. Fortunately, the staff doesn t have to answer to those complaints, I have the privilege of answering those and a privilege I do think it is. It is a privilege to have been placed in a position of trust by the membership and to do what is right for the Club. And so it is a privilege to respond that the Club is doing very well with out a manager and I am honored to be working closely with the Board of Directors and the Flag Officers to structure a management team - with out a manager. I know there are many members who liked some of our previous managers personally, as it should be. Some of us recall fondly mangers of yesteryear such as Ed Shine and Joe O Toole and others. However, whether we like a manager personally should not get in the way of evaluating performance. Over the past 5 years, the board has uncovered a lot about the performance of the Club out of necessity due to the loss of one manager to malady. What we found was not pretty. What we learned was that our expectations for a manager and the reality of our managers were in vastly different hemispheres. Left brain/right brain? I don t have a clue but I do know that we have a unique opportunity with current the team leaders at KYC to do away with the manager position and focus on building a team that is well educated, well motivated and very dedicated to the Club. Is there trepidation when stepping into the unknown, absolutely! I can t put to words how I felt on January 1st stepping into the Commodore s Reception as Commodore knowing full well we no longer had a manager. I challenge anyone to walk in those shoes. Maybe that s why I go barefoot! :-) But after the excitement of the reception died down, the Flag Officers, with the support of the Board rallied behind a plan that many would have shied away from. Knowing it was untested, a trial period was put in place, more than likely a period too short for an honest evaluation, but one that corresponded to the needs of the day. If there is any doubt in anyone s mind about my commitment to seeing the evaluation period through to it s conclusion, let me be very clear. Together, we will see March 31, 2018 roll around very soon with out a manager at KYC. The only way my commitment would change is if the membership, to whom I answer, deems otherwise. After March 31st, the Board will evaluate the results and decide what direction to take, again, unless the membership chooses otherwise. I would like to close with a big thank you to those that have worked tirelessly giving not only their time, but their dedication to ensuring a positive outcome to this three month trial period. Humbly your Commodore, who really would like to get back to his sole responsibility - the commodes. Aloha Members, We have removed the rusted, leaking storage sheds in the maintenance area. Aaron Phillips and Rusty Lillico of House and Grounds are behind this project. We have been accepting proposals from various Ice companies for a member ice machine. As soon as we make a decision on which service best meets our needs, we ll give you more details. We do expect to see service in the near future. You may have noticed repairs to G dock. Mahalo to our volunteers for their efforts. Pacific Cup is fast approaching. Pl ea se make an effort to get involved and volunteer for a committee. O ur Team Leader approach to the management of the Club continues to be evaluated. We anticipate a decision on the future management of the Club to be made in March. Aloha, Ralph MEMBERSHIP REPORT Michael Swede Olson Membership Count as of February 9, 2018 SENIOR LIFE ASSOCIATE INTERMEDIATE FAMILY LIFE FAMILY JUNIOR NON-RESIDENT SERVICE TOTAL I want to start off with a very big Mahalo to everyone who helped with O pening D ay and the F ishing Fleet sponsored B oat B lessing. There were many individuals who made this possible and I thank each and every one of you. It was a perfect day and perfect weather. The Fishing F leet came through yet again with a beautiful Boat Blessing in the morning. It was great to see many of the Club Members getting their boats blessed for the new year. Pastor Darren Galindo was amazing and made it a point to board each boat and provide a very personal blessing. Once the boats and the club were blessed it was off to a great pot luck lunch with some amazing dishes provided by members. If you didn t make it down, you missed out. I m not going to lie when I say that rum cake was to die for! I could have eaten five of them!! After everyone filled themselves it was off to the boats for a trip around the bay. The wind was a bit light, but it made for a relaxing sail. Thanks again for everyone who participated and helped in making it a momentous day. With O pening D ay over that could only mean one thing : Race Season! Races kicked off the following weekend with C lassboats hitting the water first. Thanks to R ace Committee who did a wonderful job managing over 50 boats on the water consisting of Cal 20s, I14s, and Lasers. Unfortunately, weather had different plans the following weekend for IRF. The boats headed out in torrential rain but the crack of lightning sent the fleet running for the club. IRF will try again on March 11. Remember skippers, if you want to be scored you need to help with R ace C ommittee. Please contact our Regatta C hair, Pete Stokka or me and we will get you signed up. The weather also caused the first Thursday night Bulkhead R ace to be canceled. Therefore, March 1 marks the first one. Hope everyone joins in the fun. There are over 30 B ulkhead R aces this year so plenty of opportunities to win some tickets! Don t miss out. If you don t know how to sail or don t have a boat come on down anyway and walk the dock. There are always boats willing to take someone for a nice lap around the bay. With all the sailing coming up this year it s not too late to dust off that rule book and attend the R ules Seminar on March 13. Trust me, you will learn something. The first two classes have been great and I know this next one will be the same. If you aren t quite sure all that goes into rule 18 now is the time to learn. Don t miss out. Some exciting regattas are coming up next month starting with the I14 Pac Rim followed by the first Lipton Cup. Both to be held here at KYC in April. As you can see there are plenty of activities going on and many opportunities to get involved and meet new members. I hope to see you around and out on the water. Aloha 3

4 International 14 Fleet Andy Bates I-14s 2018 Start There is a lot of excitement in the I-14 F leet going into The I-14 World Championships takes place every other year. In 2016 the event was hosted in Carnac, France. Boats from all over the world converged on Brittany for a wonderful week of sailing, eating, and drinking! This A ugust the I-14ers will converge on San Francisco Bay at Richmond YC. The event will take place on the famed Olympic Sailing Circle in front of Berkeley and just to leeward of Alcatraz Island. The wind and sea conditions will test the some of the best ding h y sailors in the world to their limits. Staying upright and not breaking the boat will be the main determinants. KYC is hosting the PAC RIM race, which will be the largest preliminary race before the Worlds in SF Bay. The PAC RIM is again partnering with Pasha Lines, our sponsor two years ago. Their work with youth programs here, and on the mainland is commendable. We feel honored to have them agree to work with youth sailors again. Local I-14ers look forward to working with the Pasha Lines team. The PAC RIM is scheduled for April There will be all kinds of new go fast ideas showcased at the event in preparation for the Worlds in August. There will be a youth Hula demonstration at the A wards B anquet on April 9. The performers are from the Palma Settlement. They put on a wonderful show two years ago. Club members are invited to come down to the club around 7:30PM and see the show as a well as get a preview look at the newest ideas being developed in high performance ding h y racing. On April 8 at 9:30AM there will be a free advanced youth clinic ashore, and I-14 sailing for select Junior racers; weather depending, immediately following the clinic. This is always one of the highlights of the event for the racers and J uniors. Our regular Class Boat series of 16 races beg a s in early February. We have three I-14s for sale in the fleet if you want to up your game and sail one of the most challenging and fun boats in the world. Come down and look at the starter boats that are for sale. Stay tuned to the KYC weekly updates that Tracey and staff put out for more details on the sailing demo for interested buyers. Juniors ashore Sponsored by Hawaii Yacht Racing Association 4

6 JUNIOR SAILING DIRECTOR Jesse Andrews We had a great clinic in Hawaii Kai over the weekend with 25 sailors attending from Oahu and Maui. It s a tight squeeze under that bridge but the kids loved the challenge! Thank you to all the coaches, parents and participants. The participants who were relatively new to the class made huge strides sailing along side of world-class Bic sailors all weekend long. We will also be taking KYC J unior sailors to Hawaii Kai for the first annual Ring of Fire event over Easter weekend. Sailors from Hong Kong, Australia and New Zealand will be traveling here to complete as well. Lucky kids getting to sail internationally at such a young age! Weather permitting, there is also a long distance race from Hawaii Kai past Diamond Head finishing at Hawaii YC. We have five new Bics coming this month for the Junior Sailing Program as well as five new Bics for private yacht club members. Thanks to donors to the Kaneohe Yachting Foundation we have been able to purchase seven new sails for the Junior Program and two used Open Bic sailboats! If you are looking for a tax free donation please consider the Kaneohe Yachting Foundation. It is a great way to support Junior Sailing at our club. Feel free to contact me or Amy Hammond for more details. Aloha, Jesse Elyse Barra sailing a Topper with dad Marc Lots of light air in February. I guess that s why we don t schedule many races this time of the year! Bic Clinic Hawaii Kai Photos: Jesse Andrews Sailing in Maunalua Bay 6 Boats making their way under the bridge Hawaii Kai

8 TENNIS FLEET Donlei Darnell Ever had a Coney Island Hot Dog (chili, yellow mustard and onions) or a Chicago Hot Dog, (mustard, neon green relish, sliced tomatoes, onions, spicy peppers, pickle spear and celery salt)?? WOW!! The theme for the Fleet potluck, thanks to Ann Ayling, was The Great American Hot Dog with F leet M embers bringing many, many toppings and additions to create the many different styles of hot dogs from across American. We had instructions for assembling at least six different dogs and I bet there were a few originals too. And to top it off, we had the makings for Banana Splits Supreme with all the toppings including maraschino cherries. Yum! And to add to evening there were fire crackers for Chinese New Year and this year is the Year Of The DOG. What a great coincidence! The Tennis Fleet has several new members joining our fleet and we look forward to them joining us on the courts as well as the monthly potlucks. They are Karen Hunt, Art and JoJo Larin, Moira McGrain, and Cynthia Smith. Speaking of the courts, there was another super tournament in early February with 24 players, including a guest of JoAnn Goebert all the way from England. Clive Buckley was a fun addition to the group and actually came in second in scoring. Because guests cannot place in the tournaments, John Gross was second and the winner was Bob Meierdiercks. For the women, third place was Terry Beuret, a tie for second place was Susie Jannuzzi and Sime Gross and the winner was Linnea Brooks. We are very fortunate to have Greg Siok offering lessons again at the club on Friday afternoons. You can him at Greg@athomehawaii.com. We are also hopeful that in the near future there will be an ExerTennis class on Wednesday mornings. Look for information soon. The next tournament is on March 10 and Richard will be sending out signup info. The potluck has changed dates to Friday, March 16 and will be at the Jannuzzi/White home with the theme being announced later. The change is because there was a conflict with the Newcomers Pupu Party on March 10 and we want to encourage fleet members to attend as it is a great opportunity to meet the newest members of KYC and maybe even recruit members to the fleet. FISHING FLEET Dan McLellan The Fishing Fleet ended 2017 with a great end of the season party. Thanks to all of those who helped and the 2017 leadership of the Fleet started with the annual B oat B lessing, and once again thanks for all those that helped, with a special thanks to Mike Van Woerkom for all of his help while I was recovering from a hip replacement. We are planning to hold our first meeting in March and begin to schedule out the year. So, start sharpening your hooks and cleaning your rods and reels. The goal for the year is to have as many boats and fishermen and women out on the water as possible. It will be your responsibility to find the fish. (LOL) During the year we hope to have special presenters at our meeting in the hope that we all can become better at catching and not just fishing. There is still time to join the Fleet, just ask at the Club Office and they will let us know. I hope to see all of you out on the water for a safe and fun-filled Watch the weekly newsletter for more information about our first meeting. There will be opportunities to sign up for reservations at the club. Gail Hutchinson will be the lead with help from Ron Dodini and they can use your help in several ways: Make phone calls to possible donors. Sign up to donate yourself. Work at the Blood Mobile the day of the drive. Make cookies to serve at the Blood Mobile. Take reservations at the club on designated evenings. We need to have at least 35 to 40 reservations (and more is even better!) For more information see the the Blood Bank website - Let s work together to have a successful blood drive!!
