3 COMMODORE Frederic Berg By the time you read this the Bullship will have come and gone and there will be new winners all around. With a little luck, yours truly will make the podium, at least in class. I ve lost a little weight so maybe they ll adjust the weight categories enough so I can still start far down the harbor in front of the truly light weight entries. Bullship is one of those races that embodies the spirit at Kaneohe Yacht Club, fun, but keenly competitive. It s one of those races where everybody comes out to support it, either as a participant, a spectator or the crew that makes it all happen. I look forward to seeing you there. After last month s challenges, it s good to see the Club hitting on all cylinders once again. We have our new Manager, Shaun Myers working his magic and our new caterers, Island Fusion Catering are finding their place in the galley. Our membership numbers are at or near the cap. There s room in the parking lot, and it seems we are taming the wanna be members who bypass the front office (to pick up a membership form, or just sign in as a guest) and bee line straight to the pool to hang out. We are following the by laws on how to deal with members that haven t paid dues, so I m happy to announce, we have no members that haven t caught up by the end of this quarter. Our by laws are fairly strict in the way we deal with non payment and it has proven very effective once followed. Thanks to the office staff for their diligence in following up with members that hadn t paid. The Newcomer s Pupu Party continues to be a great hit with our new members and many current members that want to get to know them. The Deckhands have once again put on a great spread and prepare the longhouse to welcome our latest additions. Mahalo! If you see someone around the Club you hadn t seen, please introduce yourself and get to know our new members. They are just as excited to know you as you are to know them. Aloha Members, Can you believe it's October already. The retailers are already promoting Christmas. By the time you read this we'll be counting down the days to the Annual Membership Meeting. Then Thanksgiving shortly thereafter and before you know it, it's the Commodore's Ball on December 8th. Christmas is right behind and then New Year's eve. I can't believe how quickly the year has progressed to this point. I'd like to highlight some of the year's accomplishments under your Board with the assistance of the many volunteers and committee members providing input to the Board; 1. The team leadership building experience has developed and matured our KYC department leaders into much more efficient staff, to the benefit of our members. 2. The hiring of our Human Resources professionals has brought us current to the many HR rules of today and has provided a valued resource for the Board. 3. The hiring of a professional accounting firm to update and modernize our systems 4. The hiring of a qualified and experienced in-house accountant to work with our accounting professionals 5. The refinement of our bookkeeping processes to the point where we have professional and more accurate reports 6. The re-organization of our maintenance area. 7. The signing of a contract to rebuild/replace a major portion of G Pier 8. The purchase of a buy-one, get-one free golf cart to replace the aging cart that we've been using for many years. 9. The hiring of an experienced Club Manager 10. The production of more sailing events than any other club in the state (possibly more than all the other clubs combined) 11. Many other smaller, less publicized events 12. Updated and enhanced data processing system, by Tom Wood & Frederic Berg In addition to the above, we have the following committees in the process of making recommendations to the Board for revisions to the following Club documents; Mooring Regulations House and Grounds Rules and Regulations Pool Regulations All of which are intended to bring these documents current by today's standards and remove some of the ambiguities found in the current documents. Your board will soon be working on goals for Respectfully submitted, Ralph Foulger Vice Commodore VICE COMMODORE Ralph Foulger I hope all of you have had an opportunity to meet our new Club Manager, Shaun Myers. If you haven t please make an effort to swing by and say hello. He has only had a little time on the job so make sure you give him a chance to settle in before giving him too many tasks. As most of the country s yacht clubs are putting their boats away for the winter I am reminded how blessed we are to have a year-round boating opportunity. Moving into October we still have a lot of sailboat racing and activities for you to enjoy. On the sailing front we have the J/24, J/80, Melges 24, and Soling states. Who s the best in Hawaii? I guess we will find out soon. We also have the Cy Gillette Day on October 28. Make sure you call your crew and get out on the water for this great event. Thursday night sailing finished up but don t worry, it doesn t stop. It moves to the second Sunday in the month. Come on down on Oct. 14 for another bay sail. If skippers are looking for crew don t forget to offer up a ride to some of our new members. I was fortunate to speak to many new members at our Newcomer's Pupu Party last month who are eager to learn to sail or lend a helping hand. If you re not into sailing, there is still plenty to do. The Deckhands are putting on another fabulous Keiki Halloween Party on October 27. Bring the kids down - it is sure to be a great event. There is also Monday Night Football for all you fans. As always looking to see everyone down at the club. Aloha. 4 JUNIOR SAILING DIRECTOR Jesse Andrews September is always a highly anticipated month at KYC for Laser and El Toro sailors. The Laser State Championships and El Toro State Championships took place on two separate weekends in September with oddly similar conditions. Spotty, shifty and light trade winds made for more inconsistent finishes for the competitors. Being on the correct side of the course was the only thing that really mattered in some races. In the last Laser race of the series two smaller radial sails came out of the right side to finish first and second overall! The rest of the day the left side had been paying off and John Myrdal was playing that side very well. Prior to the start we emphasize to the Junior sailors to stand up as high as they can in their boats about one minute before the start to see what side of the course looks like it has better wind. When it is light air in Kaneohe Bay finding the best wind on the course is of great importance. I enjoy seeing these kids thinking about their start strategy and modifying it to the conditions as they change through out the start. Sailing really helps you think about all the different variables of mother nature, wind speed, direction, other boats causing bad air, right of way, time and distance to the start line, correct sail trim and body positioning in the boat and that is all before the start! Back to the Laser States, John Myrdal put on yet another clinic winning the event for about the 20th time I believe! It is inspirational and great for kids to sail against someone of John's caliber out there. By just watching him sail it makes you learn many small things that make him so fast! He wasn't immortal in the light and shifty conditions every race this year with one race being snatched away from him by Max Roth. He gave the rest of the fleet a chance by using his last race as throwout race he headed in and the rest of the fleet were ready to battle for that top spot. Benton Widlanski came out of the right corner with a substantial lead along with fellow radial sailor Makani Andrews. After a split downwind Makani ended up passing Benton and holding on for the win. A great way for my boy to celebrate turning 11! Congrats to the 27 sailors who competed all weekend long and to the 12 trophy winners below. Makani Andrews Laser A 1st John Myrdal 2nd Max Roth 3rd Colin Weston Laser B 1st Kanoa Pick 2nd Gavin Ball 3rd JP Lattanzi Laser Radial 1st Benton Widlanski 2nd CJ Perez 3rd Makani Andrews Laser Master 1st Guy Fleming 2nd Scott Melander 3rd John Hingham El Toro States and Bullship took place Saturday and Sunday, September 29 and 30 with 26 sailors ranging from 10 to 60 something years old! I can't think of many other boats that a 90 pound 11 year old and a 6' 60 something year old can be in a battle for the overall win! This time the two oldest sailors in the fleet took first and second overall with the youth hot on their heels. Buzz Blackett sailed a super consistent regatta throwing out a 4th place finish to beat Kui Lim by one point! The junior fleet was even closer with JP Lattanzi winning the tie-breaker over Makani Andrews. It was a good showing for KYC Toro sailors taking the top seven spots overall. The morning of Bullship brought better winds then expected with knots filling in for the hour or so that it takes to sail around Coconut Island and back. Leading around the island and all the way to the South Channel entrance was the same duo that won the States the day before. A match race ensued upwind with JP slowly chopping away at Makani's lead until they both skipped the Green South Channel entrance mark! They eventually sailed back around but that gave Max Roth the lead and eventual win! Mani Pahuatini had a great comeback from midfleet to finish second overall. Very exciting race to watch! The Senior Bullship saw wind starting in the 5 knot range from the North East eventually shifting to the South East with a small rain squall. This made it interesting as a handful of boats rounded the island the unconventional clockwise direction. This seemed to pay off when Yal Lim came storming in the North channel to overtake the lead into the harbor. But with a big lull on the right side of the harbor I was able to avoid the lull and get a lucky shift to overtake the lead and the overall win. There were many double-handed boats with family members and significant others. Notably, Jeff and Katie Cruise were first to the North Side of Coconut overall and Marc and Elyse Barra were the first boat to arrive going the other direction on the South side. The Wahine were also contenders with Jennifer Gillette taking the South route and just inching out Leah Magana who went North, both finishing close to the lead. This day lived up to it's claim of "Americas Premier Yachting event" with 62 entries and 65 plus sailors competing this year! Toro! Toro! Toro! 6 2018 Friday Night Dinghy Closeout by Andy Bates Friday Night Dinghy racing was finished on September 28. At this writing there are still some places undecided. Our last Friday will determine the top finishes in Bics and Lasers. There were light to moderate air nights, heavy air nights and even some rescues this year. Our season started on April 11 and finished September 28 as our evenings became shorter. The Eco Flag is used as the Committee Boat start and finish line. The flag promotes clean air and water through sporting events worldwide (ecoflag.com). For sailors clean air and clean water have a special meaning. The air is the motor that moves our boats and the water is the road we travel over. Protecting these valuable natural resources provides an opportunity for future sailors to enjoy the wonder of sailing. Our club invites non-members to come and join the fun on Fridays. We have had UH sailing team members, Hawaii Kai Boat Club sailors, and KYC parents come and sail and assist with the races, as well as some sailors from WYC. Our sailing friends from Hawaii Kai Boat Club have traveled with KYC youth to Europe and the East Coast this year. They all represented our clubs and state well; finishing up at the top end of the fleets and exhibiting sportsmanship we can all be proud of. The format is three races each Friday night starting 6PM and normally ending around 7:15. Racers sail in the area right around the coral patch in front of the harbor. Scores are maintained and season awards for each class will be presented at the KYC awards night in December. Race Committee will gladly let parents come observe the racing from the club whaler when space is available. By the end of the season we had 25 nights of racing with 63 races scored. There were 44 different racers who competed in one or more of the six classes of boats. We had world famous around the world guest skippers return to their roots and give the racers some competition. We start back up April 12, See you then! DECKHANDS Margaret Peebles/Wendy Jackson What a crazy month of weather we all endured in September. 8 I-14 Fleet News: The I-14 has had a long gap between Classboat races. We complete the season with three races and a Fleet gathering on Oct 20 which will introduce new people interested in joining our fleet to sailing 14s in one of the best venues in the world for dinghy racing. More details on this event will be available on the KYC weekly e-newsletter that Tracey puts out. I-14 World Championships; San Francisco Bay Our sister club, Richmond YC, hosted the I-14 International Team racing event and the individual World Championships August Three members of the Hawaii I-14 Fleet participated. Michael " Blackbeard " Pacholski was selected to be a member of the USA team and represent our fleet in the 35th running of the International Team races. This Team racing event started in 1933 and has continued with a short interruption for World War II. It is the longest running international dinghy Team Racing competition in the world. Six teams from five countries competed (Two teams from Germany). The two-day competition was hard fought and closely contested in moderate breeze just outside the Richmond YC break wall. The USA Team made it to the semi-finals and finished third overall. The British team had superior boat speed and the Aussies were fast in the stronger breeze and finished second. I was on the race committee and was also emcee for the final dinner that included skits from all the teams. A good time was had by all, and the organizers did a great job managing this important event. Kevin Rogers and I sailed the first two races on the Berkeley Circle with a great deal of difficulty. The breeze was 20 knots plus and there was an ebb tide. The fleet had lots of swims and we had to sail in both days before finishing. On Day 3 I fell on the tiller extension after a capsize and got a hairline rib fracture. Kevin sailed a great race with stand-in Daniel Roberts (aka "Sid Vicious"). He guest crewed with the long time bay sailor Rand Arnold on the Bumblebee boat. The British and Aussie sailors dominated in the heavy breeze. The first USA boat was sailed very well by Mikey Polish - they finished 10th overall. The next I-14 Worlds is in Perth, Australia in January Need to sell a car or a boat? Or buy a car or boat? 9 TENNIS FLEET Donlei Darnell HOW TO GET AN AUDIENCE FOR THE CLARE LANG TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH ON A SATURDAY AFTERNOON??? How about.. Free Margaritas..Free Beer Free Wine and a Taco Bar! While brainstorming for ideas to get Tennis Fleet members out to The Clare Lang Tournament Finals Match, Ann Ayling and Donlei Darnell came up with the concept. Certainly, members would attend a hosted event, with a Taco Bar! It was a success with over 30 thirsty and hungry people attending to see Rob Rietow and Jan Bodinus play Dana Nottage and Bill Blakeney for the trophy. Rietow/Bodinus were the winning team after a very fun match. Others teams entered were Ko and Pam Isayama, Greg and Cindy Siok, Rich Leclerc and Susie Jannuzzi, and Wayne Jackson and Betsy Denzer. The taco bar was delicious with so many toppings to choose from, including fabulous guacamole and homemade salsa. And of course the margaritas were wonderful. We thought we would order two pitchers from the bar and ended up getting five! Our October event will be announced soon be ready to have fun!!!!
