3 COMMODORE Frederic Berg "Halloween, Cy Gillette Race, Annual Meeting, Seafest, HYRA Awards Banquet, KYC Awards Banquet and Commodore s Ball. That s what s coming up in rapid succession. Ralph Foulger along with Tracey Akamine and many others are busy planning these events for all of us. Big Mahalo to all everyone pitching in as we come into the home stretch of If you haven t met him yet, please do introduce yourself to our new Club Manager, Shaun Myers. Shaun has been with us a little over a month and as of this writing, he s still smiling, so that s a good thing. Let him know you exist and if there is somewhere around the Club you would like to pitch in, let him or any of us know. There s always plenty to do, especially when Ralph starts dreaming big dreams Yikes! For our Annual General Membership Meeting on 3 November we need a quorum of 20% of the members eligible to vote (Senior and Life Members), so come on down to the Club before 6:00 pm and sign in. That will get us started early and we can finish early. Big Mahalo to the Nominating Committee for pulling together a slate of great candidates for the 2019 Board, and thanks to the members that supported Mike Barker in his bid for a directorship. You ll also get up to speed on what was achieved this year and how KYC s finances are holding up. As many of you know, G Pier will be undergoing a mild renovation starting in January. We are out for permits right now and it appears we will have them in time to start construction, fingers crossed. In case you are wondering, everything on the pier will be replaced except the concrete floats and the anchoring system. The steel tie rods that hold everything together will be replaced with fiberglass rods, eliminating corrosion and premature failure of the rods. We anticipate getting an additional 20 years out of the existing concrete floats before the entire pier will be replaced. With the renovations to G Pier and the NPDES permit being processed, we are holding off on Haul Out this year. This is an outcome of one of our former members and neighbor complaining to the Department of Health about our operations during the winter. Sad to say, he doesn t seem to take the environment as seriously as he pretends to in hearings with all the runoff that has entered Kaneohe Bay from his construction work during recent rain events. Hope the holidays bring plenty of cheer to all. I look forward to seeing you all throughout the Holiday season. Your Commodore, whose sole responsibility are the commodes. VICE COMMODORE Ralph Foulger Aloha Members, The fiscal year is at an end. The Annual General Membership Meeting is Friday November 2. Your Board has accomplished many things this year and we are still putting together our wish list of goals for Any suggestions or input from members would be welcome. Your new board has some more very talented members, regardless of who gets elected, all nominees have great potential for significant contributions to the operation of our club. Many people have been working diligently behind the scenes to make suggested revisions to our Rules and Regs, Mooring and Pool Rules. We hope to finalize these changes by the new year. We are optimistic about starting the G Pier renovations in January, subject to permitting delays. We've had a very successful sailing season with many racing events of all classes of boats. We are still experiencing many violations of the club rules regarding the number of guests coming in, guests not being signed in, or the frequency of the same guest(s) coming more than twice in a thirty day period. It is strongly recommended that members go to the KYC website and review the Guest Policy and the outside alcohol rules in order to avoid any embarrassing situations at the club. As the new year begins, your Board will be looking for volunteers for the many committees and events that take place each year to help make this a fun and exciting place that we can all be proud of. Looking forward to seeing you out on the water or at the club. Aloha, Ralph Foulger REAR COMMODORE Mike Van Woerkom As we roll into November it is hard to imagine that the year is winding down. I hope everyone had a great Halloween. Once again the club threw some great parties for both the kids and the adults. As for activities on the water, last weekend was the annual Cy Gillette Race. As many of you are well aware Cy was a major player in the success of KYC and did a tremendous amount of work for the club over the years. It s always great to get out on the water in honor of him. This year was no different. The wind and weather were perfect and we had 11 boats on the line. Congratulations to the J/24 Hang Loose for being the last drawn from the bowl taking the 2018 win! Even though the year is quickly approaching the end there still are plenty of events for members to partake in before we flip the calendar to KYC s Annual General Membership Meeting on Friday, November 2 and the Seafest Fundraiser on November 3 at KYC are kicking off November. Please make sure you come down and support both the meeting and the fundraiser. If you did any racing this year there is a great chance you or your team won something. Don t miss out on collecting your hardware starting with the HYRA awards banquet on November. 10 followed by the KYC Awards banquet on December. 1. Tickets for the HYRA banquet are on sale now and KYC Awards banquet info and tickets will be available soon. Check the newsletter fliers for more details. However you choose to spend your November make it a safe one on and off the water. 5 JUNIOR SAILING DIRECTOR Jesse Andrews We wrapped up our 2018 Hawaii Youth Sailing Association regattas this past weekend with two events at KYC. Thirty-six junior sailors attended racing in Open Bics, El Toros and Lasers. Another light wind weekend with sunny skies greeted the sailors Saturday and with all the rain the previous night we set out to find some clear water. The course was set out close to Coconut Island where the wind was a pretty steady 10 knots. We held five races and then headed back to KYC for the pizza and awards ceremony. The following day was hosted by Makani Kai Yacht Club and the conditions were just a touch windier with more shifts with the course set close to KYC. Thank you to Makani Kai and all the volunteers who helped out this weekend especially Kai Andrade took the registration and awards ceremony duties as I had an afternoon class to attend to. Trophies were donated by Art Nelson Sailmakers, Epoxy Sales Hawaii and North Sails. For HYSA Season's points we had Morgan Vodzak 1st in El Toro B, Sage Andrews 1st in C, Makani Andrews 3rd in C, Michael Quinn 2nd in C-2, Cameron Barra 3rd in C-2 and Michael Hochart was 4th in C4. Torik Stokka also took 1st in O'Pen Bic Under 13 on Sunday, Daniel Fritz was 2nd Saturday and 3rd Sunday and Colton Conger finished 3rd on Saturday. Monroe Meinhardt sailed in her first O'Pen Bic regatta ever and was battling with the big kids in U17 to finish 4th in her class both days! Great job guys! Seasons points awards will be handed out at the HYRA banquet being held on November 10 at KYC. We also had a few sailors traveling this month for various events. Malia Johnson flew to California to participate in the Girls High Performance Clinic. This was put on by the St. Francis Yacht Club in various two person boats such as the 420, 470, 29er and even a 505! In total, there were 24 girls participating from all over the country. I highly recommend this clinic to all interested girls next year with provided bouts and top level instruction! One other awesome opportunity that six Hawaii Youth Sailors took part in this past weekend was the San Diego Extreme Sailing Series Bic Regatta. This event is set up much like an America's Cup miniature event with a regatta village with many activities and close up viewing of the foiling GC 32 Catamaran races. There were 42 O'Pen Bics sailing over two days in winds 2-5 knots. Despite having such light winds the "unregattas" are formatted with fun as a priority. The course involves a downwind slalom, mandatory 360 degree turns, capsizing or standup legs. There is also a giant inflatable "Bridge of Doom" that the kids have to heel their boats over about 30 degrees to get through otherwise the mast hits and they get rejected and can sail around. Thank you to Helena Von Sydow and Karen Lattanzi for escorting 6 Hawaii sailors ages 11 to 13. KYC sailors JP Lattanzi, Makani Andrews, Cameron Barra and Mani Pahuatini all finished in the top 15 spots! Upcoming events for our sailors are the Seafest at KYC on November 3, the HYSA Laser Clinic at WYC on December 1 and 2 and the 420/29er State Champs at KYC on December 8. Please help support our junior sailors and Hawaii Sailing Foundation by coming to Seafest for some great activities and auction items! 6 DECKHANDS Margaret Peebles/Wendy Jackson On October 14 part of the Deckhands participated in the Susan G. Koman race for the cure. Dressed in pink shirts we all walked the 5k around Kapahulu and Kapiolani park. We joined Sherri Phillips and her daughter Lindsey Arcand who walked the walk with breast cancer. She is an amazing woman and we will be with her every step of her journey. The KYC Keiki Halloween Party was held on Saturday, October 27. Remember last year we had thunder and lightning? What a day we had this year, a beautiful sunny day! About 100 keiki joined in on the fun and games. As always the generous members of KYC donated all of the delicious snacks. A big mahalo to all of you! Thank you to the members who came and donated their time to help with all of the fun games. It would not be possible to have these events without all of you. The Deckhands appreciate all of your support. Thank you to all the Deckhand members who came and helped with all the day's events. 10 TENNIS FLEET Donlei Darnell Oktoberfest What a night at KYC on Saturday, October 20! The bar was filled with Rainbow Warrior fans cheering on the football team and the roars let everyone know when the team made an exciting play. In the Longhouse was the Tennis Fleet with a Oktoberfest Potluck and polka music, very loud polka music, getting lots of feet tapping and some dancers whirling around the floor. The food was great with wurst and sauerkraut, German potato salad, wiener schnitzel and lots more delicious choices. And the music enhanced everything. Richard Leclerc got the nod for best costume with his knee high pants, suspenders, and Tyrol hat. Liz Meierdiercks was fetching in the floral dirndl skirt. Many fleet members stayed on to dance to Lou Darnell s music.he is a frustrated disc jockey and loves finding the best dance songs. Winners of the round robin tournament were: Men First Place - Aaron Phillips, Second Place - John Gross, and Third Place - Rob Rietow and Richard Leclerc. Women First Place - Sime Gross, Second Place - Betsy Denzer/ Lynn Pease, and Third Place - Pam Isayama. Congratulations all. Need to sell a car or a boat? Or buy a car or boat? Maybe I can help Over 40 years experience in car and boat sales. Call mtjb70@hotmail.com Cy Gillette Day 2018 It was a nice day, plenty of breeze for the Annual Cy Gillette Day Race. Cy's rating system worked flawlessly yet again and the winner was Jim DeWilde in his J-24, Hang Loose! Thanks to Isaac and Greg Gillette for hosting the event, to Isaac for the take home prizes, his Keopu Coffee, to Beth Grainger for the post race pupu, to Ken Fitzgerald Case for photos, to KYC for the beer and champagne, to Eric and Megan Aakhus for acting again as Race Committee, to David "the Great Davdio" Brown for the magical vignette and to all the participants who mustered to honor Cy. Those participants were: Ho onanea - David Brown Papio - Pete Stokka Eau de Vie - Rich McCreedy Ka io - Isaac Gillette Powerboat - David Nottage Kai Ola - Rocky Young Valkyrie - Tom Pochereva Black Pearl - Dawson Jones Vahine Api - Greg Gillette Last Doll - Andy Bates Luca - Stephen Valentin Mariah - Ken Schmidt Hang Loose - Jim DeWilde About Cy: Cy grew up on the mainland and sailed on the Great Lakes. He came to Hawaii with the U.S. Navy as a pilot before the start of World War II and was witness to the Pearl Harbor Day attack on Oahu. During the war he flew missions throughout the Pacific as part of the Navy s Black Cat Squadron and was able to settle in Hawaii after his service to the Navy was finished. Cy was KYC Commodore three times and was very instrumental in the purchase and development of the property where the club is now located and the plan to expand the membership. Cy took the first stab at a Junior sailing program, teaching on his Star boat in the fifties. Cy remained active in support of racing, serving on Race Committee and protest committee as needed. Cy was a leader in promoting yacht racing in Hawaii and the world with a long history as founder of HYRA, RHORC, serving on the board of the Transpac YC and as a judge, umpire and rules advisor for Olympic and America s Cup events. In 1995 Cy was awarded US Sailing s highest honor, the Nathaniel Herreshoff Trophy, recognizing his lifetime of contributions to sailing. The mayor of Honolulu declared November 18, 1995 Cy Gillette Day and KYC adopted a plan to honor him. What better way than a race? As well as competing nationally and representing the US in international events over the years, Cy proceeded to win every sailing trophy for which he competed here at KYC. He remained an active ORF and Cal-20 racer, winning first place in a Cal-20 series three weeks before his death in Without Cy, KYC and the world of sailing in general would be much worse off! 10
