3 COMMODORE Tom Wood Aloha, A ll. We are ramping up to finish our racing season for 2017 with a lot of fun and events over the next several months. September also saw the start of Monday Night Football, and October will have two more Friday night music events, First Friday on October 6 and Third Friday on the 20th, so come on down and enjoy these last few music nights for the season. Looking ahead to later in the month, on October 29 we will have both our Keiki Halloween Party in the morning, and our Adult Halloween Party in the evening. The annual Seafest Fundraiser will happen in early November at Hawaii Yacht Club in support of J unior sailing throughout Oahu. And, of course as we move into November and December, there will be Holiday events as well as the Annual Awards Banquet and Commodore s Ball. The events will start to rapidly pile up as we draw the season to a close, so keep an eye on the website calendar and your for updates. I believe that for the most part our parking policy has been successful in achieving its objective which was to ensure that members could enjoy their club with less impact from non-members. There have been a few issues created by the blanket policy, but we have adapted to those circumstances and I believe we have created a better situation for the members. We will continue to work on individual events/concerns on a case by case basis and make adjustments where necessary, but we will continue to control the parking through the use of passes where necessary, rather than simply opening the gate and allowing anyone to park inside. We intend to continue to offer food service through the bar at least through the end of the calendar year, but I d like to get feedback from the membership regarding the value of this service. If you have an opinion, I d like to hear about it and share it with the rest of the Board, so feel free to drop me a note at tomwoodkyc@gmail.com. The Annual Meeting is coming up on November 3 so please mark your calendars for that and plan on attending. We need a good turnout so we can establish a quorum early and get the business of the Club done. We will have updates on the year s progress and we will also conduct the election of officers for next year. Lastly, on a less positive note, the Board of Directors took action over the last several months on overdue accounts for a number of members. As a result, ten members were expelled when they failed to bring their accounts current. This is unfortunate, but necessary to ensure the health of the organization. Be safe and have fun at the club and on the water. VICE COMMODORE Frederic Berg OK, OK, I ll admit it, since it s still warm, I thought it was still summer and I had weeks before writing another Telltales article. But no, late again. Yikes! With the passing of summer, we enter that precarious time of year where we prepare the budget for the following year, that, oh, by the way, starts October 1. Huh? I always learned the first of the year was January 1. You would think people, like accountants, that work with numbers all the time, could at least get the start of the year straight, but noooo, not even that. Right, and they expect us to believe the rest of their report. So you see, what ever your gripe is with the budget this year, you re not the only one with an issue and excuse me, but I think mine is more fundamental. See you November 3 and you ll learn more about what is in the fiscal future for our Club at the A nnual G eneral Membership M eeting. Speaking of budgets, how can you make a budget when some members don t pay their dues? Damn good question. Fortunately the B oard has been after the delinquencies and getting those members current, but it always troubles me when these members must know they have way too much money in their bank accounts and they don t think, Oh I must owe the Club a ton of money by now. and still don t pay their bill. What Trump would do? The Newcomer ' s Pupu Party was well attended this past month. If you see one of our new members, please welcome them and tell them a little about what you do for the Club and how they can integrate into our little community. Why was the NPP so well attended? Thanks goes out to Tracey, our M embership C oordinator for following up with the new members right from the start and sending them constant and frequent reminders. Speaking of membership, we have been bobbing along just under the cap for several years now. We seem to be striking that balance between full membership and selecting appropriate candidates f o r membership. We should all be thankful for the work of the Membership Committee. They are doing a great job. Who needs to make KYC great again when it already is great? Your Commodore responsible for all the Vice at the Club (hehe, and enjoying it ) Save the Dates! KYC Awards Banquet Saturday, December 2 Commodore s Ball Saturday, December 9 REAR COMMODORE Ralph Foulger Aloha Members, Bummer! Summer is officially over. By the time you read this the Newcomers ' Pupu Party and the last Thursday Night Bulkhead race for this season will be behind us and t he November Annual Membership Meeting will be just weeks away. I want to take this opportunity to remind everyone how important it is for you to attend the annual meeting. If we don't achieve a quorum it will cost the Club (you) a significant amount of money to reschedule the meeting, reproduce handouts, pay for the parliamentarian again and so forth. Please, put the date down on your calendar, schedule a babysitter if necessary and plan to attend. Looking forward to seeing you at the club. 4 Rules of the Road Commodore Tom Wood As many of you are already aware, we will have an Annual Meeting of the Membership in a couple of months, so I d like to take this month s column to cover some material that may be helpful in preparation for that meeting. Article IV of the By-Laws for KYC addresses meetings of the Club. Section 1. requires that an annual meeting be held within three months of the close of the club s fiscal year at a time and place to be decided by the Board of Directors. There is no other specificity in the By-Laws regarding when we hold the meeting. Our Fiscal Year ends on 30 September each year, so we must conduct the meeting before January 1. By longstanding tradition, we have held the Annual Meeting on the first Friday of the month of November, in the Club Longhouse, so this year the meeting is scheduled for the 3rd of November, so please make a note now to save the date. You will also receive an official notice of meeting as required by Section 3. of Article IV. Since that notice is required to be mailed, please also check your records on the KYC website to ensure that your mailing address is correct and current, as that is what we will use when we send notice. Section 5. of Article IV requires that we have a quorum of 20% of the members that are eligible to vote in order to conduct business. And who may vote you ask? Great question Senior and Life Members are eligible to vote. We often struggle to get a quorum of members at the meeting, so attending the meeting if you re eligible to vote really helps us get the meeting started on time and conduct the necessary business of the club. It is important to remember that our By-Laws do not allow proxy voting (with the exception of spouses of members designated in writing by the member to vote for them because they are unable to attend). We generally need close to 150 members physically in attendance to meet the quorum numbers (the actual number gets calculated right before the meeting to ensure that we are working with the right number when we convene). We also need to maintain that quorum throughout the duration of the meeting in order to continue to conduct business, as there is no provision in Robert s Rules, or the By-Laws, that allow for us to continue if we lose the quorum. And, yes it has happened During the meeting we will elect next year s slate of officers and conduct any other business that requires the decision of the membership. You may have already noticed that the proposed slate of officers for next year is posted on the Club Bulletin Board. While there are provisions in Section 5. of Article VI to add nominees to the slate of proposed officers for next year as proposed by the Nominating Committee no nominations may be made from the floor at the meeting. In addition to election of officers, the Board and I will present our report to you the Members regarding the overall health of the club. Right now, we have no major concerns to bring to the membership, this year has been very positive overall and the Board and Committees have been keeping things on track. Unfortunately, when things are going well, it sometimes translates to a larger struggle in getting a quorum. What I would ask is that you seriously consider taking the time to come down and see how the business of the club gets done and participate as an active stakeholder. KYC is your Club, and it is such a great club because so many of our members actively participate and volunteer. That same spirit will help us conduct a useful Annual Meeting. As usual, I will take questions anytime by at commodore@kyc.com for future editions. Next month I will talk about Club Finances as another lead-in to the Annual Meeting, and/or anything else that either comes up, or that I get a question on. OFFSHORE RACING FLEET LAHAINA RETURN T he 73rd running of the annual Lahaina Return sailboat race was well represented by boats and members from Kaneohe Yacht Club. At least a dozen KYC boats sailed over to Maui for the Labor Day weekend. The ongoing softball rivalry between Maui and Oahu was prominent with the annual game again virtually eclipsing the race in many people's mind. The Oahu Thundercocks are made up of almost all KYC members and crew making the string of recent victories especially sweet. Oahu's infamous Thundercocks have now extended their win streak to four consecutive years with a victory over Maui's Moby Dicks! Special thanks go to all our wonderful fans who come out every year to cheer us on! They make the game a truly memorable experience! Make sure to take notice of the softball trophy proudly displayed in the KYC bar. Coach Bill Riddle Thundercock players and fans rejoice after another victory in Lahaina! Eric Aakhus, Megan Roberts, Dave Siegal, Luke Kudray, Jenny Guzik, Carlos Castillo, Chelsea Byland and Nikki Russell. 4 Chelsea, Jenny, Nikki and Megan. Catch of the Day!

5 Notice of Nomination for Club Officers and Directors 2017 Pursuant to Article VI, Section 5 of the by-laws of Kaneohe Yacht Club, the Nominating Committee has submitted the following for Officers and Directors for 2017 who are unopposed for the positions to which they have been nominated: REAR COMMODORE MIKE VAN WOERKOM Mike moved to Hawaii in 1995 and is a graduate of Hawaii Pacific University. He started competitive racing out of KYC in He represented KYC in 2014 in the J-80 Championship and in the U.S Sailing Adult National Championship in Mike is married with two kids (a daughter and a son) and lives in Kaneohe. He works at the USS Missouri as a Safety Director. His hobbies include both sailing and fishing. Mike is honored to be nominated to serve KYC on the Board of Directors. DIRECTOR PATRICK MOOSE KUDLICH I am honored to be nominated to the KYC Board of Directors as a Director for the period of 2018 thru I have been a member of KYC for 19 years participating in IRF, ORF, Class boat fleets along with Race Committee. I have been racing and boating for the past 50 years and I served on the Waikiki Yacht Club Board of Directors for 10 years during the late 1980 s thru the 90 s in various positions. I own Ocean Marine Insurance Agency, Inc. for the past 27 years and have specialized in the Marine insurance industry for 47 years. I am married to my absolutely wonderful lady, Robbin Reed, who also works Race Committee and paddles her one man canoe out of KYC. I feel that I can help the club as a Director and look forward to representing all members. Mahalo for your support and confidence. Patrick Moose Kudlich SECRETARY IAN LANGE I am originally from Noank, Connecticut, a small fishing village in the southeastern part of the state. My father was a career Navy submariner and as such we moved around a bit. After two years as a 9th and 10th grade rugrat loving life at Kalaheo High School our family returned to Mystic, CT, where I graduated from high school. I then attended Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN, on a Navy ROTC scholarship, earning a Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering. Following graduation I spent 20 quick years in the Navy retiring as a Commander in I was a surface warfare officer for the first 6 years of my career primarily stationed in Long Beach and San Diego. Finding most of my time deployed at sea, I wised up and transferred into the Civil Engineer Corps, enjoying tours of duty in Newport, RI, Guam, Seattle, San Diego, Hawaii and Washington DC. The Navy also sent me to attend University of Washington, where I obtained a Master of Engineering in Construction Management. I served in traditional Naval Facilities engineering positions such as public works officer, construction contracting officer, as well as a tour with a Navy Seabee battalion. Of course my favorite positions were while stationed almost 5 years at MCB Hawaii, serving as the construction contracting officer and then the Public Works Officer there, which offered me the opportunity to meet many current members of Kaneohe Yacht Club. Upon retirement from the Navy in Washington DC, we returned to Hawaii and I worked 4 years as the Director of Construction at a national real estate developer, constructing approximately 3000 public private venture military homes and communities on Oahu. I then worked for 3 years as a Senior Program Manager at an international construction company. I returned to the same real estate developer 4 years ago and currently serve as the Regional Director of Facilities and Maintenance. I am married to Lisa, my patient and wonderful bride of 25 years, and we have one great kid, Chloe, who is a junior at Le Jardin Academy. We joined the KYC in 2010 and during my free time I enjoy the club, trying to exercise, landscaping, working on my house and spending time with my family. That s me in a nutshell! 6 JUINOR SAILING DIRECTOR Jesse Andrews What a busy month we've had with regattas, Junior sailing and a dult classes. Our fall Junior Program is so full that we had to hire a third instructor to help out with the beginner class. I'd like to take some time to mention many of the people instrumental to our success in running so many sailing events. This fall our KYC instructors include Kahala Furukawa, Maddy Kennedy, Jenny Guzik and Michael Pacholski. Also we have our Junior helpers Kaila Baker, Morgan Vodzak and Kawika Tumilowicz and the i r parents, most notably Christine and David Tumilowicz, Jennifer Puhuatini and Ruth Baker. They've help ed us get through the busy month of classes and regattas in September. Andy Bates has also run a great season of Friday night fun races where we had El Toros, Lasers, Open Bics, Toppers 420s, 29ers and FJ s sailing this season. This really gives the kids a great opportunity to race against adults on a weekly basis and practice for what ever class they are trying to improve on. Kai Andrade, for the past decade has gone above and beyond and continues to put out the Notice of Race, Sailing Instructions, sets up registration and helps with scoring for these events. We also had Pete Stokka as PRO for our El Toro States and Mike Scott split the Lasers States duties with me. Of course Kim Ickler, Mele Pochereva and Yal Lim amongst many others put together a great Bullship event! The Laser States was held in light trade winds and had 17 A fleet sailors and 10 B fleet sailors from around the state. This year marked a record 21 Laser State champs for John Myrdal and there are no signs of him slowing down winning the event with what is refered to as a picket fence 1,1,1,1,1,1,1! In the B fleet for the first time in recent memory a young lady by the name of Addie Ruiz topped the very talented B fleet even placing 4th in the first race with the smaller radial sail! Way to go Addie! (See the full results on page 12) The following weekend were the El Toro States and Bullship! The El Toro States saw winds knots but that didn't deter 27 competitors from 10 years old to sailors 50 plus years older from competing in the same boat! In Bullship this year we had 32 starters in the adult fleet and 27 in the Junior fleet. It was even windier th a n the States with gusts to 25 knots! Only the very determined and talented young sailors would finish this year with an impressive 22 finishers in the Junior fleet. Al l 32 in the Senior fleet were able to survive the heavy winds and return safely to the finish after a harrowing circumnavigation of Coconut Island! This is a true testament to the sailors as well as the boats that all made it back with some great stories to tell. Thanks to all the competitors and especially the volunteers who make KYC such a great club to be a part of! The last two regattas of the month which were also the last two HYSA regattas of the year took place last weekend. We had a record number of Juniors sail in a HYSA event with 48 registered Saturday and 46 on Sunday. About fifteen KYC sailors were joined by sailors from Waikiki, Hawaii, Pearl Harbor and Hawaii Kai Boat Club. They enjoyed competing in ideal 5-10 knot trade winds. After both days everyone gathered for a Barbecue and prizes. We had pizza and prizes Saturday but as usual Makani Kai had a great barbecue and fed the 46 contestants as well as parents and coaches at their clubhouse across the bay. I hope we can have even more join us next year! 2017 El Toro State Championship Overall Results RACE Notes Total Place Sr; R2 OCS R5 DNS; Kahala Furukawa #11 6 Jesse Andrews

Any woman from Hawaii is eligible; anyone may submit a nomination; and there may be more than one nominee from a club. Past recipients review the submissions and vote on the nominees. Participation in Hawaii s sailing community as a whole; not just in one club s activities. 2. Longevity of participation; not just one accomplishment, unless that achievement is very noteworthy. 3. Actively supporting women in sailing; not only participating, but contributing. 8 FISHING FLEET Doug Peebles The KYC Fishing Fleet Wahine Tournament was held held a couple weeks ago. Conditions were rough and turnout was low. We did have 5 boats though. 3 fished outside the bay and 2 fished inside. The outside tournament was won by Darla Camp with a 19.8 pound aku. This is the second winning year in a row for Darla! The inside was won by newcomer Jenny Guzik on Rick White s boat. She brought in a 2.7 pound papio. The year long Fisherman of the Year Tournament is coming to an end on Oct. 28 at 5pm. Right now Rick White has about a 20 pound/point lead but a big fish from any boat could catch him. Our last fleet meeting of the year will also be on Oct. 28th at 6pm so we will know who won at that time. We may also have a final one day tournament on that date. 10 Bullship 2017 America's Premier Sailing Event, the 67th Annual Bullship was held at KYC on Sunday, September 17. First, MAC: Many did not realize the Martin McMorrow, the Voice and Spirit of the Bullship, realized three years ago that his retirement benefits would grow no larger than they had to that point so he took the golden parachute deal offered and left for parts yonder and the bar, his lovely Sharron on his arm. The torch was passed and it takes three of us to do what McMorrow used to accomplish blindfolded, one hand tied behind his back. The Machine: The El Toro, of course. The Man: Well, the women did well this year too. In an very windy morning race the first two finishers weighed under 100 pounds and were from the younger age groups. Maybe it was just so windy they flew instead of sailing but J.P. Lattanzi in first, and Sage Andrews in second set the standard for the Junior Fleet. Several Juniors had equipment failures in the heavy winds and there were reportedly some outstanding hulis. The afternoon race saw somewhat more moderate breezes and very stiff competition. Jesse Andrews prevailed in the end, having had the most practice of the top competitors, having won the El Toro North Americans in August and the El Toro State Championships the day before. In Peril: The pinatas. The crowd at pinata time has become very unruly and at times dangerous. On the advice of counsel we my have to abandon the pinata part of the party. The Mahalos: Yal Lim, Mele Pochereva, Beth Grainger, Lindsay and Jake Arcand, Ken and Georgia Schmidt, Ken Fitzgerald-Case, the Sailing Directors, KYC staff and galley, Tom Pochereva, Connie Smales, Elaine Blackett and Leslie Johnson. 13 TENNIS FLEET Donlei Darnell Shrimp, Shrimp, Shrimp shrimp can mean small, can be expensive, can look pink, and is absolutely DELICIOUS!!! The Tennis Fleet s Annual Shrimp Boil was not " small " a crowd of 54 people attended and had a wonderful time. It was not " expensive " unless you think $5 per person is expensive for all the shrimp you can eat! And it was pretty and " pink ", with shrimp cooked to perfection by our own chefs ; Sime Gross and JoAnn Goebert, with assistants Betsy Denzer and Jean Fernie. The setting was again Doug and Margaret Peebles beautiful home beside the bay. Such gracious hosts are very appreciated!. As dusk settled over the bay, the weather was perfect and you could hear the butter and cocktail sauce dripping off the 26 pounds of shrimp, the potato skins popping open, sausage bursting with flavor, corn on the cob covered with more butter, pupu, salads, breads, drinks and then dessert! Oh my, I m hungry. Thanks to our hosts for bringing us together for the event for the second year in a row. Thanks go also to Ko Isayama and John Gross who delivered tables and chairs that were arranged by Susie Jannuzzi. Lynn Pease, Kit Beuret, and Liz Meierdiercks also brought chairs. October 14 w ill be our Annual Clare Lang Mixed Doubles Tournament and German Oktoberfest Potluck. It will be in the KYC Longhouse starting about 6:30. It's time to pick your partner for tennis play, and remember that players must be KYC and Tennis Fleet members.good luck to everyone. A round robin tournament was held on September 23 with a breakfast potluck courtside. Results were: To Be sent in after the tournament There will be a meeting on Wednesday, November 1 at 6:00 to start planning for the Holiday event on December 30. We are hoping to have a great session ; a theme and a menu will be chosen. We need your ideas to add to the pot and let s brainstorm with ideas for a wonderful Holiday Celebration. Although it is during the holiday period, it doesn t have to be Chrismas-y.think WILD with your ideas!!! And then come on November 1 and share them!
