3 Commodore Chico Cantu Haouli Makahiki Hou, I would like to thank the members of Kaneohe Yacht Club for trusting in me as your Commodore for Lilia and I are very excited for this opportunity and we look forward to a great 2014 for our club. Our members have been so kind to Lilia and me these past two years as your Rear and Vice Commodore and we want to say "Mahalo nui loa for your support." I know I ve said this before but it is important to know that it is our Member-Volunteers who make KYC what it is. Without you, there is no WE, without WE, there is no KYC. Thank you for everything you do! I would like to thank Lou Darnell, our outgoing Director, for his hard work and contributions in the development, implementation and ongoing support of our website. Outstanding job Lou, your hard work is appreciated and has put us on the map. I would like to welcome Frederic Berg as a new Director to the KYC Board. He is not completely new to our Board. Frederic was kind enough to step in during 2012 to cover as Secretary for Rick Villalobos during his sabbatical in Tahiti. Frederic will be a great asset to our team. Look out golf fleet, look out tennis fleet, look out sailing fleet or should I just say look out all fleets, I m going to challenge myself this year to be even more involved in all club activities and we have a lot of them. I urge all of you to consider doing the same or at least try something new this year; explore other activities in our club and have fun. There were so many things going on at the club during December and if I had to pick a favorite it would have to be our annual Christmas Dinner which featured the Honolulu Boy Choir. It was definitely a night to remember. Now, on the other hand, in the eyes of our KYC children, the event of the month would have to go to those 15 tons of snow Santa left on our lawn. Gotta love our KYC kids. Looking forward to seeing all of you around the club or in the water! Vice Commodore Tom Pochereva 2014 is rushing in with a host of things happening at our yacht club. As the chair of the Club Operations Committee (aka Club Ops) I have already had the pleasure of meeting many of our shore side members who volunteer their time to make our facilities and events run smoothly all year long. Around the club you will notice a number of changes happening over the next two months. Keep an eye out in the bar for the new bar stools which the Deckhands will be presenting to the club. The Entertainment Committee has many great events planned to mark the months as the year progresses. Starting off the year is a Bourbon Tasting Evening and if you haven t booked your tickets don t wait long as it may sell out. The planning should ensure it is as well received as last year s Tequila Tasting and most certainly will be a very enjoyable evening. Publicity at our club centers around social media coordinating TELLTALES, our website and . This year Frederic Berg will be heading a team of young and computer savvy members whose goal is expand on Lou Darnell s 2013 launch of KYC s new website. If you have ideas, information, content or thoughts on what you would like to see for publicity and the website send me an and I will forward it to the Team. Another important part of Club Ops is the House and Grounds Committee. This team oversees our club operations, maintenance of the buildings, grounds, swimming pool, other facilities and equipment. As you know, one big project coming up is the repaving of our parking and dry storage areas. Throughout the year we will be working on other various projects geared to maintaining our club in good condition. Should you see something that may need addressing please let me know. This should be an exciting year for our club. I look forward to seeing you at our events and enjoying our many activities and facilities. Rear Commodore Richard Perkins Many thanks to our 2013 Fleet Captains and their guests who joined in to summarize their fleet events from the past year. All were in agreement that the Luau format for the Awards Night was a great success. Looking forward, they forecast their activities for the coming year, emphasizing goals to increase participation and encourage new comers to tryout everything from inviting a junior to sail, holding introductions to a fleet day like the I-14 Skiff Day, cruising to the neighbor islands on a keelboat, joining a tennis match or fishing for an elusive windward marlin! The New Year starts off with a Mariner s light show Navigators and start gazers among us should relish the upcoming astrological event called the Quadrantid Meteor Shower with around 40 sightings per hour because it happens during a moonless period from January 1 through 5. Other upcoming events range from the annual El Toro Clinic, a Race Management seminar, to the start of our busy competitive series. Keep an eye out for our Telltales and on the web-site for other upcoming events like Opening Day in February. 4 Port Captain Bob Hurd Aloha, The New Year is upon us, and I would like to thank the members for their co-operation in making 2013 a great boating year. There were a few challenges, such as the Moth World Regatta and such, and 2014 presents us with the Pacific Cup in July. We will need plenty of volunteers for that event, but it only lasts about a week. The State has mandated that all Hawaii boaters take a course in safe boating by November I have talked to the Coast Guard Auxiliary about teaching the new course module, the part the State added. That module is needed by those who have already completed the boating safety course and still have proof of completion. See, you really did need to keep that card after all. There is no need to retake the entire course just to comply with the new requirements. Paving of the car parking lot looks like it will begin mid February, once haul-out is pau. There will be further notices posted prior to the start. Stay tuned. The Marina Regulations, Paragraph O, restricts the use of the end of G Pier, and the bulkhead, to two hours, unless authorized. I use the end of G Pier to put up visitors who have boats that draw more than 8 feet and Club members who need it for various reasons. Please call me before you wish to use the area. Have a safe and prosperous Stay safe, have fun, and I ll see you on the water. Junior Sailing Director Jesse Andrews Happy New Year everyone! We have some great sailing opportunities coming up in the new year. This coming weekend Kaneohe Yacht Club is holding the annual HYSA El Toro Clinic. This clinic is appropriate for anyone who is comfortable sailing by themself and who would like to improve their sailing skills. Winds are forecast to be light trades this weekend. This is a great opportunity to get a head start on the new sailing season and hone your skills. The clinic will be very learning intensive and have the three Sailing Directors coaching. The clinic participants will be split into groups according to their skill level and the groups will have a chance to work with all three instructors. We have a limited number of club boats available for charter for this event so please contact me if you would like to use one. Sign ups for the clinic can be found online at hp?regatta_id=7652 We will be holding an adult sailing class on Jan 4,18, 25 and Feb 1 from 9am to Noon. These classes will be taught on a Cal 20 and each student will receive a U.S. Sailing Start Sailing Right class book. KYC Spring Sailing classes also start on Feb. 8 and run through May 10. Aloha, Jesse KYC Blast from the Past Junior Sailors of the Year Aaron Kitoyoki and Kai Heitzman Special Achievement: Leah Ford and Kiana Heitzman Commodore & Non Resident Member Richard Osborne, Sr. Passed away on November 20, 2013 "The gentleman in the captain's hat sitting to leeward in the photo is Jens Schultz, the owner of MP Number 8 of the Kaneohe Yacht Club "Mid Pacific" fleet of yesteryear. Whenever Jens would go out racing in his MP, his wife would sit patiently waiting for him in the area between the KYC bar and Men's head. Ever since then that area has been affectionately known as the "Ma Schultz Lounge". 4 Celebration of life shall be from 2-7pm, February 8, 2014 leaving the dock at 3:00 pm for scattering of ashes and Celebration of Life to follow in the KYC longhouse at 4:30 pm. 6 International 14s Elise Leroux The I-14 fleet wrapped up the year with our State Championship Distance Pursuit Race on December 7th. Congratulations to Frederic Berg and Ryan McCrillis for their victory! Due to light air, the course was shortened to go only as far as R20, across from the sandbar, but also rounding several of the usual racing marks between Coconut Island and the Marine Corps base. Four boats raced, with Tom Pochereva and Shelley James finishing 2nd, Elise Leroux and Doug Gordon finishing 3rd, and Cecilia Jansson and Mackenzie Cook finishing 4th. Stay tuned for next season s reports we anticipate six or more I-14s actively racing! Announcement of the 2014 Pacific Rim I-14 Championship Regatta by Andy Bates The 14s are coming to KYC again!!! The Board of Directors approved the plan for the eighth running of the Pacific Rim I-14 Championship April 26-29, This event has grown in size and stature over the years. At the recent World Championships sailed in a cold and rainy venue in Toronto, Canada there was lots of discussion about the "Next Hawaii PAC RIM" event. The Canadian, Australian, English, and Japanese sailors all were positive about coming to the friendly confines of Kaneohe Bay for the excellent dingy racing venue we have. The opinion universally expressed by all the sailors who have come to race I-14s at KYC is the staff and members make the guest sailors and their families welcome. 8 Deckhands Ann Bachmann A great Big, Big, Big, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, to all the VOLUNTEERS who helped us this year with the Keiki Parties and Newcomer's Pupu Parties. Without your help the parties would not be such a Great Success. I also would like to thank Georgia Schmidt for the flower arrangements she keeps up in the Ladies Room. When you see her PLEASE tell her "Thank You for a Great Job". The really big news in the Bachmann Family is that our daughter Lisa gave us our FIRST GRANDSON on Tuesday November 26, 2013 His name is Gary James Jennings lll. I will be with them in Alaska for Christmas. We will be having our Membership Drive on Thursday, January 23 and Sunday, January 26. Annual Membership is $8.00 for a couple and $5.00 for a single person. You will receive 2 drink tickets for a couple and 1 drink ticket for a single person. These tickets can be used at anytime. From Becky Dodini: When Ann submitted her article, she did not realize that she had been selected to be the Deckhand of the Year in appreciation of her dedicated service to the Deckhands and her never ending help in writing articles for Telltales, assisting in the locker, and always being available for assisting at Children's parties. The trophy was presented to her at the Commodore's Ball. Congratulations, Ann, and thank you. On a sadder note, Ramona Robertson, an active member on the Deckhands' Board for many, many years and former Deckhand of the Year, passed away on Christmas morning. She had served as President several times, and had chaired more Children's parties than anyone could count. She always had a smile on her face, and never had an unkind word for anyone or anything. The world was a much better place with her in it, and we will all miss her more than we can say. May she rest in peace. 9 Tennis Fleet Donlei Darnell The Fleet had a wonderful Christmas dinner at KYC on December 21. The theme was "Christmas Carols." Each table chose a carol, decorated the table accordingly and then sang their chosen song. It was great fun. The winners sang Rudolf, the Red Nosed Reindeer. We had a gift exchange, door prizes and lots of singing along with wonderful dining. Compliments to the chef and wait staff they did a superb job. It was announced that the new fleet co-captains will be Jean Fernie and Rob Rietow. They will start the New Year with a planning meeting to fill the committee slots and decide on events. 13 Ramona Robertson passed away on December 25, 2013 The following is an excerpt from Leathernet.com (2006) U.S. MARINE CORPS FORCES, PACIFIC, CAMP H. M. SMITH, Hawaii (Sept. 25, 2006) -- From the Marines at U.S. Marine Corps Forces, Pacific and those who have passed through its doors in the last 40 years, a heartfelt thanks goes out to Mrs. Ramona Robertson. For nearly four decades she dedicated her life to service, not only to MARFORPAC, but to every Marine who has had the pleasure of meeting her. Ramona has done so much, and is willing to do so much. It s going to be extremely difficult to replace someone who takes such pride in her work, said Lt. Gen John F. Goodman, Commander MARFORPAC. Mrs. Robertson started working for the Marine Corps in December 1966 as a transcriber typist. In October 1979 she became executive secretary to the commander, Fleet Marine Force Pacific. Then in July 1994 she took on the additional role of assistant protocol officer while maintaining her responsibility as executive secretary until September Mrs. Robertson could not begin to talk about which commanding general was her favorite. She felt it was to hard to single one out and just not polite to even try. I cannot answer that question because each one had their own special personality, she said. Though she could not pinpoint any one general, she does hold every one of them in high regard. I am in awe of their ability to look forward into the future of the Marine Corps with a positive and wise outlook. They truly know where the Corps is headed and I am amazed by their memory bank, she said. They have the unique ability to understand the demands and implementation of solutions for events involving the military, civilian and those in the political arena as well as stepping forward in time of world-related humanitarian needs. While she had many great things to say about the ones she worked with and for, they have an equal amount of praise to heap upon her. I have known Ramona since 1999, and we worked together for two years until my departure from Hawaii in July 2001, said Lt. Gen. Frank Libutti, USMC, (Ret.), former MARFORPAC commander. She was one of the most diligent and professional individuals I d ever had the great, good fortune of serving with in my 35 years of service in the Corps. Her dedication was 10 plus on a scale of 1 to 10. She has served with 17 commanding generals and countless upon countless individual Marines, and we are all better for having known her, said Gen. Charles Krulak, former MARFORPAC commander and Commandant of the Marine Corps. Lt. Gen. W. C. Gregson, USMC, (Ret.), former MARFORPAC commander, had nothing but good things to say as well. The most important thing for all to know is that she is a wonderful person, and the Marine Corps is fortunate to have her in our ranks, he said. Mrs. Robertson has seen the almost every aspect of the commanders she has worked for, and as hard as one might ask, she has nothing negative to say. She is far too genteel. I have some very funny stories but I will never tell you what they are, she said, laughing. For her former bosses, some of their fondest memories of Mrs. Robertson are those concerning her compassion for Marines. I have many memories, but the most touching is the way she felt for every one of our casualties, as if she had lost a close friend, said Gregson. Many of those who have worked with Mrs. Robertson have pleasant memories of their experiences with her, even after they left MARFORPAC. I have some very fond memories of Ramona. When I was commandant I would fly to Hawaii and no matter what time it was, four in the morning or midnight, she would be there with a lei and a smile for me, said Krulak. It was like coming home. Even though Mrs. Robertson never served in the military, she has the dedication that every Marine should have. Mrs. Robertson says her job is no different than that of a secretary in the civilian world, but her humility is just as strong as her dedication. She performs a multitude of tasks for one of the most influential military leaders in the world; planning his schedule down to the minute and ensuring he has everything he needs to accomplish his mission Day after day and year after year, she continues to come to work and her love for her work never fades. I am not the sit at home type, and working in a positive teamwork environment is stimulating. The satisfaction of being part of the MARFORPAC team is as rewarding as any other team effort, she said. Even after so many years, it never really dawned on her just how long she had been working with the Marine Corps. I actually never really thought that I had worked with the Marines for 40 years. It was more like 28 years, serving as the Secretary to the Commanding Generals, she said. I never thought to add the other 12 years working here at Camp Smith, but lo and behold, I've been coming through the doors of MARFORPAC for 40 years. What a surprise! So why did Mrs. Robertson choose to work for the Marine Corps? I started here, and well, I love the Marine Corps, she said, laughing. Mrs. Robertson, born and raised on Oahu, has seen many things change in her time here. She has watched pineapple fields and palm 13 groves turn into housing additions and highways. She has also witnessed the evolution of her beloved Marines. The young enlisted have changed. When I started they were made up of high school dropouts or those who were given the choice of going to jail or joining the Marine Corps. That s a different breed when you think about it. Then they changed the rule and said only high school graduates could join, which changed the mentality. Still the Corps continues to change. For Mrs. Robertson, this change has been for the better. Now you have what you have today. The enlisted people are brilliant. Anyone who can work the computers the way they do today and learn all the things they have to know is just mind-boggling, she said. It s amazing to see what the Marines were like when I joined and what they are today. It s nice to see their type in the military. Even when Marines had stopped working for her directly, she continued to support them and treat them with the utmost respect, just as she continues to treat the Marines who have replaced them with respect. Miss Ramona makes everything run a lot smoother. When I first got here I was very nervous working with the general every day, said Pfc. Melissa Babcock, MARFORPAC, staff secretary administration clerk. She helped me in my transition, and she made it easier for me to work with the general. She treats the colonel with the same respect she treats me with, a Pfc. While Mrs. Robertson will be retiring from her service to the Marine Corps, she hopes she has made some sort of difference. The only difference I may have made is the fact that I can be an example to others that one can stay on the job for all these years and still enjoy waking up in the morning and wanting to go to work, she said. This is a goal many know she has achieved. If anyone thinks they cannot enjoy what they do for a living, they need only look at Mrs. Robertson. I love my job, everything about it. I guess it s the personalities that come into my life. I am a people person; I have always told people I love my job. I have never really thought about why, she said. If I was to say anything, it s about being a part of something that s important to the world as far as I m concerned. With Mrs. Robertson leaving our ranks, it will be hard to fill the gaping hole she leaves. It will certainly be difficult to replace her experience, but she will be close by and I m sure her service to MARFORPAC and our Corps will not end, it will just be of a different type, said Gregson. Yes, it will be difficult to find a person to fill her shoes; however, I m confident a suitable replacement will be found I sure hope so, Libutti added. No matter what happens now, Mrs. Robertson says she is pleased with her experiences and wishes all those she has worked with feel the same. I would like to add that it has been a rewarding experience to have been associated with the Marine Corps and I will sorely miss all who entered my life and touched my heart, she said. What a wonderful 40-year journey.

16 SPRING 2014 KYC JUNIOR SAILING PROGRAM KYC's 2014 Spring Junior Sailing Classes will be held every Saturday from February 8 through May 10. This Spring we have expanded our classes from 11 to 14 weeks. We will be starting one week earlier and are keeping the prices very affordable at $5 to $7 an hour per student. Whether or not a student was enrolled in the Summer Program or some other session, take this opportunity to participate in our Spring Junior Sailing Program! As a primary benefit, the Spring classes are normally a smaller class size so students can take advantage of a better instructor to student ratio. Students in the Topper class will also have more opportunities to sail by themselves and accelerate into other classes at a faster pace. These classes focus on safety, fun and sailing skill building. In addition to regularly scheduled classes, the program offers participation in local regattas, Friday night El Toro races, and Sunday Laser and 420 Races. Spring Sailing Program Schedule Novice Topper Sailing - This is a Learn-To-Sail class for students aged 8 to 18. If a student has little to no sailing experience or has taken a few years ashore and wants to rediscover sailing, this is the class. Classes are primarily taught in Toppers, our beginning sailboat. Boats are provided for all students enrolled in this class. Curriculum will include the basics of sailing, including parts of the boat, points of sail, and boat handling. The goal of this course is to have fun in a safe and educational atmosphere. Classes will be held on Saturday, 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM. Introduction to Racing- This is for the sailor who understands the basic fundamentals of sailing including, rigging, points of sail, docking and terminology. Sailors must be competent in capsize recovery and be able to sail a boat by themselves. Curriculum will focus on performance dinghy handling in El Toros and 420s and will introduce racing skills. The goal of this class is to improve sailing skills and to gain a basic understanding of sailboat racing and tactics. Classes will be held on Saturday from 1:30 PM to 4:30 PM Advanced Racing- No messing around!! Junior Sailors interested in more advanced levels of sailing including racing, tactics, boat handling, and boat maintenance, should enroll in this class. Students who participate in this class will work closely with students of all ages to improve sportsmanship, leadership and sailing competence. This class will require more time and effort on the part of the sailor and will require attendance at local regattas. El Toro classes will be held from 9:30am to 12:30pm. Laser and 420 Classes will be from 1:30 PM to 4:30 PM. Special Notes for Intermediate and Advanced Class Students: There are additional fees for regattas usually around $ Parent participation is appreciated to help with loading and unloading of the trailers and transportation of sailors to and from the regatta sites. Costs Junior Spring Sailing Class tuition will be $255 for Members and $295 for Non-members for all classes. Tuition for students registering for both Saturday morning and afternoon classes will be $465 for Members and $545 for Non-members. A 10% discount is applied to students using their own boat and for siblings signing up at the same time. No refunds will be available for missed classes. Partial scholarships may be available.
