Where did August go? I now find myself in front of my computer at the last minute trying to write something for the Mainsheet. Well where do I start? Carolyn and I joined CYCT earlier this year and we are still in the process of learning people s names, watching and learning what happens at club meetings and trying to attend club functions. Then in early August, I received a phone call from Becky Flannigan. Becky began to tell me of several new opening in the club and she just wanted to know which one Carolyn and I was going to take. At first I thought to myself I can t find the time to get projects done on our boat, around the house, or take the time to help out on current club activities let alone volunteer for one of the clubs positions. But in retrospect, I started to think that this may be a great opportunity for Carolyn and I to get involved in the club as well as get to know everybody. So as I find myself getting ready for the September issue of the Mainsheet it has just occurred to me, can anybody say no to Becky Flannigan? I m not sure they can. Anyway, the Mainsheet is really the Clubs monthly publication to inform us all on what is going on in the club (as well as those not in the club) and I will try to do my best to keep up. If you have something on your mind that you would like to share with the rest of the group, please let me know (this is also a pointed way of telling those out there cruising to send us their thoughts Like, I don t know, maybe Becky Flannigan). 3 September 2010 Page 3 Commodore s Comments Greetings Everyone, Two CYCT boats have navigated their way into California waters while another CYCT boat is currently preparing to leave the middle of this month. These boats will join each other in San Diego for the 2010 Baja Ha Ha cruisers rally to Cabo San Lucas. It appears that this year s Ha Ha is looking to be attended by a record number of CYCT boats and Club members. It will be interesting to see if any other yacht clubs will have more boats or more club members in attendance at this year s Ha Ha. In addition, CYCT will have a total of six boats cruising in Mexico this season. I think it may be time to consider an out station in maybe La Paz or something? (Just kidding) Karen and I are looking forward to joining Intuition as crew for the Ha Ha leg. I hope that you too may have the opportunity to sail on one of the legs down the coast as the experience is well worth the effort in my opinion. Speaking of a return on your investment, I understand that some committee positions may still be available for The best way to get a good return on your club membership is to become involved on a committee and active in your club. As you can see we are a happenin group of sailors. So come on out and have some fun with us. Sail fast and sail often, Dan Walker Patrick T. 4 September 2010 Page 4 Vice Commodore s Comments Can you believe it, the last Wednesday evening race has finished. It has been a wonderful summer (even if I didn t think summer was ever going to get here). It felt so strange on Wednesday while I was getting the boat ready for the last evening race of the year (I m already looking forward to next year s summer racing). Have you ever wondered what the CYCT spirit is all about? - I find it every year out on the water. Each Wednesday evening as I go to the Skipper s meeting to learn the race course, the last thing I would hear would be someone saying (week after week) DOES ANYONE HAVE ROOM FOR CREW? Who would be standing there with his hand up and an open heart? - Billy Carter. On one race I counted 15 crew members on board with light wind ahead of us. It just doesn t matter who you are or what you know, the welcome mat is always out on Discovery. So, the way I see it, no matter when Discovery crosses the finish line, Billy will always be NUMBER ONE. What a terrific ambassador for sailing and CYCT. The single/double-hand Vashon race is in the books. Racers were challenged by light air conditions and significant currents. For those of you who missed the Maritime Fest race, I would say that it had some of the strangest winds that I have ever sailed in. I think we tacked the head sail 5 times and never turned the boat. Two boats were in front of me on the same compass course, one was on starboard tack and the other on port while I was going dead downwind (Figure that one out!). The last time I had conditions like that was around 1970 when I was sailing C-larks on Steel like in Federal Way. Now it is time to switch gears and get ready for the Harbor series and the Ken Raab single-hand race. The next cruise is sure to be a fantastic one as it will be hosted by Billy and Soo Carter (Would you expect anything less from Discovery?). For September s general meeting bring your questions and come prepared to greet the Tacoma City Manager, Eric Anderson. We will be back at Johnny s in the usual place. Here are some things that will be coming up next year: The January general meeting is going to be to wear your CYCT or Wind Seekers apparel evening. There will be some sort of award for whoever wears the most items of their own (no sharing) and remember, Commodore Walker. The dress white shorts do count, but I don t know how you will prove that they are the ones you received at the Commodore s Ball last year. The February general meeting will be who has the oldest picture dealing with CYCT history. The only rule is that it must be a picture that you took and can explain.
September 2010 Page 5 Vice Commodore s Comments Cont. Also in February If you want to join a bunch of CYCT members and others for a fun loving cruise to St. Maarten and other BVI islands, then read on. This is a 7 day cruise round trip from Philipsburg, St. Maarten. Prices are per person: Cat 3 (middle of the pack) Cruise fare after group discount $ Port/Gov taxes Total $ Cat 4 (still good) Cruise fare after group discount $ Port/Gov taxes Total $ A deposit of $400 per person is required to hold a cabin. The final payment due date would be November 29th (approx). Payments can be made anytime you want so you do not have to pay it all at once. The $400 per person is refundable if you have to cancel by October 14th. Penalties begin Oct 15th. Once we know how many cruisers we have, the price will be adjusted (could get lower). Cruise Specialists will be giving each cabin $100 in ship board credit (a little rum?, a lot of rum?, or use for shore tours or just buying souvenirs on the ship?). The ship Star Clipper holds 170 passengers. We will visit Anguilla, Virgin Gorda (warm baths), Tortola with its great snorkeling and a few other islands. If you want a brochure, just let Vaneva O Hara know. Also, you can check out their website at Remember, the sooner you sign up, the better cabin choice you will have! This will be the Commodore s Star Clipper Valentine Cruise. There is still time to sign up, by contacting Vaneva at: or or Steve Hucke Performance Yacht Hull Service Fast comes standard. So does peace of mind. David Morey Home: Cell:
September 2010 Page 6 Rear Commodore s Comments Greetings, CYCT! There is a chill in the air!! Fall is here, and September is only beginning. I have heard predictions of a mild winter ahead. Perhaps I have just jinxed us all! It is hard to believe that our Wednesday Windseekers for 2010 has already come to an end, yet it is getting dark earlier, which is a sure sign that evening sailing is finished and we now move on to Saturday morning racing. A little crazy, eh?! CYCT has a wonderful opportunity to show off our lasers and optis this coming month at the Seaport by participating in the DaVita Village Festival Please see page 18 for more information. Brian and I are planning to be at the Seaport introducing folks to dinghy sailing and talk about some of the opportunities CYCT has for juniors in the community. I know that this is the same day as our CYCT Point Beals Race, yet, I would like to extend the invitation to our members to help with the DaVita Festival if you aren t racing in the point series. Contact Brian for more information!! This month s board meeting involved some discussion about the holiday party in December also!! Seems too early to be planning for December, doesn t it?! If you would like to help me with this event, let me know! Last year was certainly fun. The tentative date is December 10th. Stay tuned! Finally, a huge thanks to Dan and Karen Walker for hosting the CYCT Picnic at Regatta Farms! If you haven t visited their place, I highly recommend it!! Adam and Ruthie are master frog hunters in Dan s pond, and also braved feeding Karen s two llamas without being spat upon!! Their home is absolutely beautiful, you walk in and a warmth of family and friendship seeps out of the front door. Thank you for opening your home to our CYCT friends! And, thank you Soo, for planning the private airshow. Yours truly, Cheryl White Rear Commodore Greg Fuller General Foreman gcfuller@qwest.net Residential Commercial Industrial th Ave. S. 8 September 2010 Page 8 Race Report August 2010 Race Report Hot summer fun!.we have had some good (sort-of) hot days, but the winds were sure light this year! Our Wednesday night series ended on August 25 with a run to the resturants at Ruston. We gave the folks out on the deck a good show as we parked and restarted! The highligh of the month was the 2010 Vashon Challenge. Twenty-four boats from 6 yacht clubs participated in challenging conditions in the beat up Colvos Passage. The Race Committee called the race at the top of the Island, to put the competitors out of their misery! The last race of August was the Tacoma Maritime fest race..a short sprint to Browns Point, then on to the City Waterway. Unfortunately our arrival at the mouth of the waterway coincided with a small hydroplane race, and some competitors had to wait an hour or two to actually dock. Those that made it in had a great lunch at the Rock the Dock Pub! More good CYCT Racing is still coming! Our next race is the Windseeker Awards race, on Septemter 11 th. We then start up the fall Point Series, with the first race being the Point Beals Race on September 18 th. Come on out for some fun PHRF competition!
September 2010 Page 9 Race Report (cont.) Remember to check out our CYCT Racing Flickr page for photos of your boat on the water, and remember race committee volunteers are always welcome! ( @N06/) Carve the Waves! Steve Ryan - Race Chair CYCT Membership Report Last call for new burgee if you wish to order one. Cost would be $ Just send me and at gballentine@wamail.net if you wish one. Not much else to report on the membership front. We have had some hits on our concerning different types of memberships we offer, however nothing to report. We have a new membership team in place for next year. I m sure when it s announced who it is, you will be pleased. We were able to spend about 10 days motoring and sailing around the San Juans in August. Pretty rough first night at Spencer Spit, with a sailboat sitting on the beach in the morning. I know they had their anchor out, as it was still in the water. The rest of the trip brought mostly 80 plus degree days with calm seas. On the final days of our trip we found a Latitudes and Attitude dock party at Cape Sante Marina. We re told there were 150 boats booked, with a waiting list but we got in. We heard some pretty tall tales on those docks (I m sure they were all true). Remember, fly that burgee! Gary and Joy

September 2010 Page 11 Thoughts from Denny I just spent 6 days sailing to San Fransisco with Jim Merritt and crew. When we got to SF, I started to feel the excitement and anxiety that comes with change. I know that Jim is excited for his new venture but also sad to be cutting his ties with CYCT. Jim and Connie should know they will be missed but not forgotten. Very few couples have done so much for a club. Their many roles will be hard to fill. I envy the club that gets them when they find their new home. Becky and I will start our trip on Sept 15th when we leave Delin Docks marina at 7:30 p.m. If your not busy that evening, come down at 5:30 for a bite to eat and say farewell. I m sure the emotions that come with leaving will be strong. While I m excited to start the journey, I m sad to be leaving family and friends. While new friends and relationships will be formed as we go, nothing can replace the close ties we have with so many of you. Check out our web site and read the blog at What s the plan? Nov to May 2011 Mexico May to Nov 2011 Central America to Panama Nov to May 2012 East Coast Central America to New York June 2012 cross to Ireland Follow the blog and read the mainsheet to learn more as we continue the journey. We only have two rules: 1) Be flexible 2) Expect change Other than that, were open to whatever opportunity comes our way. Thanks CYCT!!! 17 September 2010 Page 17 Cruising Report Summer cruising is almost behind us. Cooler weather and more wind are on the way. Five of our members and soon Kokomo have spread their sails and are flying south for warmer sands. I would love to be packed away in a cubbyhole somewhere and join them. However, some of us must stay behind and keep the home fires burning. Three boats, Tom and Barb Saul on Hooligan, Roy and Winona Rombough on Saucy Lady (returning from Ecuador), and Marvin Fritts will join his boat Roksan that is on the hard (in Guaymas - soon). The other Cruisers following are Jim and Connie Merritt on Sound Effect, and Ron and Connie Holbrook on Intuition who left in August. Denny and Becky Flannigan will be leaving September 15 th. Some of the plans for Roksan, Intuition, Sound Effect and Kokomo are long range and include such places as Costa Rica, Ecuador, Panama Canal, Gulf of Mexico and the ICW. It takes a lot of planning and preparation to leave the dock for this type of cruising. We wish them good fortune with the wind forever in their sails and happy landings where ever they choose to go. When they return there will be stories to tell and knowledge about life on a long distance cruise. I hope to see many of you for the Labor Day Cruise at Penrose. Stay tuned for the Salmon Bake in October. The date is still in question with Quarter Master Harbor and scheduled races. As soon as it is fixed I will pass it on to all. So long summer and come on fall. Don t let it stop you from enjoying time on your boat. Soo Carter, S/V Discovery Cruise Chair
