Looking at all the photos from the salmon bake just reminds me that even though we are not traveling south we are very blessed to be living in an area noted by many people around the world to be some of the best inland racing and cruising spots in the world. Don t miss out on the November CYCT racing and cruising activity that is planned this month. Rob Crone s/v Honey Dew T-37PH Happy Birthday! 3 November 2010 Page 3 Commodore s Comments Hello Everyone, Please make plans to attend our November general meeting it will be at Johnnies in Fife. The meeting starts at 7:00 PM with social and dinner hour starting at 6:00 PM. This is our annual election of the 2011 Board Members so we need your nominations and votes to be cast. We will also be nominating and voting for the 2010 perpetual trophies so be thinking about those people whom you would like to bring to the floor for nomination. The annual audit of our books has been completed and no discrepancies were found (Great job Christine! And thank you audit team). By the time our Mainsheet is published several members of CYCT will be on the water in route to Cabo San Luca from San Diego. So pray for a 15 to 20 knot North Western breeze and following seas along with safe passages for all. It looks like most of us crew members will fly into SEA on Sunday the 7 th so we should all be at the November general meeting. Ola amigos, Dan Walker
November 2010 Page 4 Vice Commodore s Comments Fall brings changes that holds true for events in the club as well as the weather outside. We have bid farewell to a number of club members and boats while they enjoy the warmer climate of Mexico, although Denny & Becky Flannigan s blog at is worth the read. We can travel with Kokomo and keep up with our friends down south. A big change in Mickie and my lives is the empty slip at Tyee. We thought it was time for a change after we went to Annapolis, MD and compared a few sailboats. So we returned the next week and took our Isabella up and traded her in on a new boat. It was tough to let go of such a good friend but we knew we had to do it so that we could move on. Stay tuned for the next boat, a brand new Beneteau First 35, arriving in the country after the New Year and then being commissioned. We should be up and running for Windseeker Wednesdays, Opening Day and many memorable cruising and racing days ahead. It should be the first Beneteau 35 on the West coast and we hope she will be as fast as she looks. Right now I am ordering up sails and trying to come up with a good name. After shopping the catamaran scene at Annapolis Bev and Lew Channing also created a change, they welcomed a Newport 30 into their lives. It was fun to hook up for a drink after the show and compare notes and thoughts about boats and dreams. You never know who you will see when you travel across the country; we had just broken Sweet Bread and Salmon with Bev and Lew the week before at the Vashon Island cruise. When I stop to think about it, the season has really been a catalyst for us to fulfill our dreams by starting with change. Sometimes it is nice for things to be predictable but change can also create new opportunities for us to experience and enjoy the world around us. So I have resolved to dive right into the season, look forward to our Caribbean Cruise in February and our new boat after that. So I don t really care about how more shopping days to Christmas, I just want to know how many more days until my new boat arrives. It s going to be a tough winter waiting for my ship to come in. Steve
November 2010 Page 5 Rear Commodore s Comments Greetings, CYCT Members! Just as I was enjoying the Indian Summer, the 65 degree warmth in October which is unusual for the Pacific Northwest, in came Autumn like a lion!!!! I do hope you are all keeping track of your bilges with all of the heavy rains! We manually have to pump ours, as some have automatic pumps. Not a bad idea to go down and check to make sure things are working well this time of year. Also, keeping your holding tank empty is a good plan. Things expand when they freeze, and none of us would wish a holding tank failure due to over-expansion on our worst enemy! Men, that would be a BLUE job in our household! Keeping air moving around in your cabin space is good, and keeping it warm is good too. Dry-z-airs, or whatever they are called, really do leach the moisture out of the air and into the pot. As I type this, I'd better get my 'honey-dew' list going so some things can be done to get ready for the winter season. One final piece of advice, listen to the weather forecast. If a massive wind storm is coming in, it would behoove you to make a trip down to your boat and reinforce the tie-downs that you already have. Some boats, if exposed to a large chop, will rip the cleats right off of the dock and will travel through the marina at will. This happened in our infamous December windstorm that took out most of the Crow's Nest Marina. That was a frightening night, yet, thanks to Ed Pinkham for the 1 am phone call "You might want to get your butt down here soon, the marina is disintegrating!" Brian got down there after fishing some unfortunate man out of a ditch. Several dock friends, many CYCT members, pitched in and salvaged as many boats as they could, taking them into the safety of Tyee. We must always be prepared for storms like these. Extra fenders, extra lines. Secure your sails. And, have it in your heart to look at your neighbor's boat to make sure they are secure. Our neighbor was the boat that came free and roughed up our starboard side before traveling down to rough up a few others. Plus, it's just a nice thing to do, and that's what we are all about at CYCT. Hope everyone had a safe and happy Halloween. See you at Arabella's Landing for the clam cook off. Don't forget to prepare for the Holiday Party December 10th at Totem Yacht Club in Tacoma. Bring 'naughty-cal' white elephant gifts, there will be stealing of gifts again. Start looking for those treasures now!!! Also, hit up the dollar stores for little trinkets to put in to the kids' bags. Gen Hovey will be hosting this. Your officers will be bringing the hot buttered rum!! Yum yum!! Cheryl White Rear Commodore
November 2010 Page 6 October 2010 Race Report Command Point, the second race in the Point series, was held on October 10. Truly a marathon contest, as it was another grueling light air ordeal! And to top it off, it rained almost all day! The RC had to shorten the race at Pt. Richmond, so congratulations to Forrest German on Blue Moon for reading the currents and correcting out in Class 1 over John Lietzinger in Kahuna. And a good huzzah to Mike Tunny in Cuatro Vientos, whose T-Bird beat out Gordon Kells- Murphy on Les Chavaux Blancs for his win of class 2! The Windseeker fleet for this race was also made up of two classes, with Glen and Joanna Cowling on Something Special getting a first in Class A over Discovery helmed by Billy Carter, and we had Rick Garrity in Blue Jay edge out Angie Littleton s Windsong! Awards for the Point Series will be given out after the last race. Also held on October 16 was the Ken Raab single-hand race. Special Purpose, Blown Away II, Wild Thing and Maria Christina all won their classes in this periennal favorite, held in sunshine and fine winds. The next Point Series race is the Pt. Defiance Race on October 30 th, and then the last CYCT race of the year, the Browns Point race on November 6 Never fear, More good CYCT Racing will be on tap for 2011! Don McAdams, the new Race Chairman for 2011, is assisting in developing the racebook schedule for 2011, so keep tuned to the mainsheet! Remember to check out our CYCT Racing Flickr page for photos of your boat on the water! ( Carve the Waves! Steve Ryan - Race Chair CYCT
November 2010 Page Salmon Bake Cruise Pow Wow! The theme for the 2010 Salmon Bake Cruise was a Reflection of True Ancient Indian Culture. This cruise was hosted by Fred and Ursula Ahrens and Lew and Bev Channing. Janette Ahrens (Fred and Ursula s daughter), recently attended a real Native American Pow Wow, and brought some great ideas to our cruise. Janette suggested that we place the tables in the round so we could all faced one another. Janette also made authentic Indian Squash Soup, and Bread on Sticks cooked the way the Indians did- over a fire. While Janette slaved away in the kitchen cooking the soup and making the bread dough, we all enjoyed a social hour with a few games of bow and arrows, and a little Indian burlap toss. To our great surprise, Denny Flannigan returned from his world travels to attend the Pow Wow. We were also very pleased to have the Ballentine family attend with the calibration of Sean Ballentine s 16 th birthday. To find just the right salmon, Lew Channing visited with the Indians fishing on the river (bartered for a good price on the fresh fish). Lew then designed a massive Indian Cedar Plank Board for the salmon, which was created specifically for maximum flavor, and created to hold up until just the right moment (Lew and Fred ceremonially started the fire). Fred Ahrens expertly applied the ancient recipe of seasonings to the fish. There was some concern when the Cedar Plank Board became concave towards the fire. Fred and many other CYCT members used every piece of authentic engineering they could find (sticks) to make sure the salmon did not end up in the fire, and made it to the Pow Wow. As the Cedar Plank board spectacularly caught fire, the last piece of fish was pulled off the plank by the CYCT tribe (then the Plank self combusted). It was a true CYCT team effort, with everyone bringing delicious side dishes, and the salmon was excellent. Following the meal, each member introduced themselves with their ancient Indian name. Then a rousing round of birthday cheers for Sean Ballentine filled the roundhouse. Next on the agenda, was the CYCT Totem Pole Centerpiece contest. Native Americans used Totem Poles to record a family history, and this was our chance to display our talents. Each table designed an ornate Totem Pole centerpiece, using egg cartons and other craft items, and proudly described the significance of their Totem Pole to the judges. Bev, democratically declared three prize winners, but all of the Totem Pole Centerpieces showed artistic flare and panache. Volunteers were then called by Fred and Ursula to read aloud Native American legends. Of course prizes were involved, so our brave volunteers- Tom, Penny, Joy, Mickie, Billy, Jennifer, Sean, and Vaneva entertained us with their vivid storytelling! To conclude the Pow Wow, Forrest and Chris ran the Bingo game, and while Denny claimed to be the winner, he apparently has lost some of his eyesight, or is just a cheater! The 2010 Pow Wow concluded with the traditional Fire Dance over the charred Salmon Plank Board. The next morning, while breakfast omelets were cooking, CYCT members were still reveling in their artistic Totem Pole creations, and storytelling abilities. Many thanks to all who attended the 2010 Pow Wow!
November 2010 Page 8 Kokomo The mainsheet is lookin good! Thanks Rob for all the time and energy it takes to make this newsletter! By now, we are in the Baja Ha Ha Rally. I ll write about it in the December newsletter. But let me tell you what s been going on in San Diego. My first week was HOT and humid. That was something to get use to. Another thing I m trying to get use to is a constant noise under the boat snap, crackle & pop. They are shrimp. To read more go to: It is very interest! Everyone here are very friendly. I have people knocking on the boat to introduce themselves almost daily! My friend Karen came to visit me for a week while Denny was in Tacoma wrapping up some business. Karen and I had such a good time! I m glad Denny is here now in San Diego. He was having a hard time getting use to no job and no money. But after a few days he is settling down and seems less stressed. We ve been bike riding almost every day, doing projects and getting ready for the Baja Ha Ha. In this photo, I put the camera on the hatch and took a photo of us having a glass of wine. Surprisingly it worked well! We are so excited; our crew Pat & Christine Nelson will be joining us for the Baja Ha Ha. All three CYCT boats and crew are going to see Dan & Kristy Gains. We are hoping to take a group photo. 11 November 2010 Page 11 Here is the lineup of the nominated 2011 CYCT positions There are still a few area that need filled. Remember this is a great opportunity to get involved in your club while having fun at this same time. Thanks to all the CYCT members who are volunteering their time so we all can benefit from the fruits of their labor. Remember, you don t have to take a position to be helping your club. All you need to do is just lend a hand and or help out where you see an opportunity. One great example of this is our book auction during our club meetings. Joe Salz wanted to remind us all to bring your used books in for the auction. During the last auction we collected $47 that will benefit the club.
