The boat work continues and we are getting ready to head off on our yearly sailing vacation around the local area. A big congratulation needs to go out to the CYCT Cruising Fleet Kokomo and Sound Effect for keeping us informed of their adventures, sights and sounds. Also just a reminder that I need to see more photos from everybody as well as any articles or Boat Yard items you would like to post. I am a little late on this month s addition and will try better next time. Rob Crone s/v Honey Dew T-37PH August 4 August 5 August 6 August 8 Happy Birthday! 3 August 2011 Page 3 Commodore s Comments Transitions Windseekers racing is the best time of year for me. We moved First Dance to the side tie in Tyee II to make it easier to dock; Mickie has already been out practicing and approves of the new slip (happy wife a good thing). The dock location has added a new social dimension as people pass by and stop to say hello and we get to see a lot of neighbors coming and going on Windseeker Wednesdays. I hope my old neighbors will feel welcome to wander by and visit too. Last night things started getting darker earlier and we all wanted to deny the swift passing of summer. Enjoy summer while we can! Another transition that I need to announce is the changing of my job as I return to Boeing in a couple of weeks. Looks like I will be on second shift which means that August will be the last evening meeting that I will be able to attend and I will only make it part way through the next Windseeker series. It was a tough choice but a good job is hard to pass up in these economic times, so look for First Dance on the week-end cruises and races instead of my favorite Windseeker evenings. Mickie and I are looking forward to the double-handed Vashon Island race in August. When I was younger I watched the sailboats and always thought it would be great to have a sailboat and race all the way around Vashon Island. I hope that many of you will consider trying your hand and maybe testing your marriage all the way around Vashon Island; it can be tiring but very rewarding too. The club is in good hands with our current Board and upcoming Vice Commodore and Rear Commodore. I will remain available to the club when I am not working but will miss the camaraderie at the evening events. The club is growing with 9 new members so far this year. We are also on the brink of some transitions in junior sailing and an opportunity to look into the future with an upcoming survey from our long range planning committee. Tony Dorsett said: To succeed you need something to hold onto, something to motivate you, something to inspire you. I hope everyone gives some good constructive comments and ideas to help guide the Board and the future of this club. Times are changing and I know that we will continue to work together, sail together and plan lots of fun things together. Steve

August 2011 Page 4 Vice Commodore s Comments Greetings, CYCT Membership! This has been a busy month, for sure! Where do I begin? July started out with Juniors Juniors Juniors!! Over the course of 3 different classes I was able to instruct (including my own two kids) about 10 kids in the Thea Foss Waterway during our Junior Sailing Lessons this summer. It was a LOT of work, and thanks to several parents and club volunteers, we pulled it off pretty well! The weather was hot initially, then quite cool, but with steady, predictable winds. We fought currents and large tide swings, but over the course of two weeks, the kids were predicting tides and making adjustments quite nicely. We were able to get a little press in the News Tribune as a reporter was spotted on the docks shooting photos of the kids as they were practicing their capsize drills. That was exciting. One theme that chimed in during my lessons was good sportsmanship. I found some of the kids had struggles with competitiveness (mostly with themselves) and demonstrated sometimes less desirable behavior on the water. I tried to focus on the Corinthian Spirit, the art of exceptional sportsmanship and I think it hit home for some, not only on the water, but hopefully off the water too. As I pondered on this, I came across a passage on a website that I d like to share CORINTHIAN SPIRIT Good sportsmanship goes a long way in life Where do you draw the line between winning and losing? It s simple. You don t. Good sportsmanship is important. It s about helping each other without having to be asked. It s about congratulating each other for a game well-played, and it s about recognizing the positive effort of both sides. Either way, no matter the outcome, being a gracious competitor will provide a solid personal foundation for anyone involved in our sport. In yacht racing, good sportsmanship is commonly referred to as corinthian spirit, based on the excitement of a common goal to have fun during the thrill of competition. It s important to point out that being a gracious competitor can be difficult even though you had a tough day.

August 2011 Page 5 While good sportsmanship may be something largely recognized on the water, it s vital to understand that it extends well beyond competitive activities. It forms an important part of our lives during our future years in business, teaching or other professions. It provides good guidance for our lives no matter what the activity. What are some examples of good sportsmanship? Helping a fellow sailor rig their boat when they are having trouble, or congratulating a competing skipper for a great race even though they beat you across the line. It s not about throwing your hat on the ground wishing for a different result, that s for sure. Sports that involve competitive groups are a thrill. Making people feel that they play an important role in the competitive landscape, both winners and non-winners, is critical to sustaining competition in general. Good sportsmanship can draw a bold line between classy competition and sour grapes, remembering that handshakes are preferred over head shakes. I would like to believe that we at CYCT strive to uphold the true definition of the Corinthian Spirit, both on the water and off. One example I encountered was in the form of an which took me by surprise. Hello Cheryl, I am sending this to you because you seem to be working with the young sailors. Last Tuesday, July 5th, we encountered the CYC Boston wailer and 3 small sail boats in the Foss Waterway. Please tell whomever that we were not trying to run them down while sailing through their midst. It is not our custom to sail up dead end waterways but Red Jacket had blown an engine seal leaving Quartermaster Harbor. The leak squirted oil all over her engine room and Terry when he went to check on an odd engine sound. Thus we had no power. Luckily there was enough light wind to bring us home and to our moorage. Terry started the engine and used reverse gear for 10 seconds to slow her down enough for me to grab dock mooring lines. Please pass along our apology to the CYC participants if Red Jacket seemed at all threatening. Sincerely, Rene Paine Many thanks for making me proud to be a part of CYCT. Cheryl White Vice Commodore

August 2011 Page 6 Rear Commodore s Comments O.K. If our government can pass a budget with such little heartache, it can't be that hard. If I were Commodore Steve, I would simply increase our budget deficit by one trillion dollars. Then I would build that waterfront club house we all would like to see. Maybe buy a Grand Banks for our committee boat just like the Seattle Yacht Club. Establish out stations throughout the Pacific Northwest and Canada. Then at the end of the year, leave the debt problem for Cheryl to figure out. Look for me to bring this up under new business at the next board meeting. As long as were talking about pointers we can use from the government. How about implementing parts of the constitution at our next meeting? It is really quite simple if you think about it. The first amendment, freedom of speech. Fifth amendment, what we say cannot be used against us. And lastly the second amendment, the right to bear arms. In other words, say what you like. If we don't like it we can shoot you. Practicing our constitutional rights and shortening the meeting at the same time. More new business to be discussed. July was kind of a quite month for us as far as club activities go. We continue to race on Wednesday nights. Joy took first place last week in our division and now she is impossible to live with. Look for us to be dragging a few large buckets the next time she is at the helm. We have spent a couple of weekends on the boat. It is amazing how many CYCT members you run into when you are out and about. Our first weekend we saw our new members aboard Serena Gorda in Gig Harbor. Getting hungry with no dock space available, we headed back to Tacoma. Thought maybe a stay at Dock Street, and dinner at Harmons. As we were cruising down the water way, Mark Stopka was standing on his dock calling us over. We pulled up to the fuel dock that was closed and Mark and his neighbors fed us dinner and drinks! Thanks guy's. Having eaten we thought let's just go over to Sea Port and spend the night. Pulled up and the phone rang. Asked Joy who it was and she said Lucia. Ended up closing the Rock the Dock Pub with Paul and Linda. The second weekend out First Dance got together with us for an afternoon raft up. Then on the way home we ran into Arabesque, Discovery and Sound Spirit. My point, I guess is you are never alone when you re a member of this club. Were are very fortunate to have each other as our boating partners. Enjoy your August everyone. See you on the water, and remember: Fly that burgee! Gary Ballentine S/V Tatoosh

August 2011 Page 7 CRUISING AUGUST REPORT July 3rd was a real blast in Poulsbo. At one time I believe there were 12 boats rafted. Big thanks to Roger and Judy Anderson and Fred and Ursula Ahrens for hosting. This was a very good turn out for a cruise 29 miles from Tyee. We had wind, rain, sun, and fun and not necessarily in that order. Check out the pictures in last months Main Sheet. When the fireworks started the sky was clear and the show was spectacular. Monday was a gorgeous day and many returned to watch the fireworks in Commencement Bay or QuarterMaster Harbor. Discovery and crew was exhausted so after much debate we drove home and to my surprise Angle Lake s fireworks show was right through our front window. Our home has been very busy with family and just this week Kelly and Zak came home from their jobs in Naknek Alaska. This year is the first time in 11 years that we have all been together. It s been great doing this and that: Zak and Sal racing with Billy, Oscar getting to know his cousins and the boat with Grandpa. However, I have neglected arranging a family reunion coming up in 2 weeks and I will be lucky to get this article in the Main Sheet. Lots and lots of quality time on the boat. Family, friends, boat, and garden, this is what I like best (again not necessarily in that order) and this is the time for it. Billy and I sincerely hope that you and your families get together thru July and August and make sure some of that time is on the water. Coming up: Labor Day weekend and Penrose Point. The theme is Hamming it up!. The hosts are Susie and Ed Pinkham. It s a beautiful beach to cruise to. Please put this on your calendar. Soo Carter, S/V Discovery Fleet Captain Cruising

August 2011 Page 8 Kokomo in Central America We had three weeks of Spanish lessons in Xela, Guatemala. If ever you wanted to learn a language this is the way. We spent 5 hours per day studying and then went home a practiced with our host family. It is great to have the base of the language help us communicate with the locals. It was also nice to get away from the heat. We were in the mountains 7500 ft. above sea level and we needed a coat which I haven t worn for so long. After class we went on different tours around Xela. One time we went to a hot spring that was fed by a volcano. One of the pools was so hot you couldn t even put your big toe in it. We learned more than we expected along with now understanding and speaking Spanish. I know when Becky asks for her beer in a glass that s what she will get. Or when the Port Captain tells us to wait we won t say ok and head on in. It was a great experience and reasonably priced at $175 per week per person. We are back on the boat now and Kokomo is anchored in the Bahia Del Sol Estuary. It s nine pm and the place is silent. You see its cruisers midnight and all have gone to bed. I am up having a glass of scotch and reading the mainsheet. I can t tell you how much I enjoy getting a little piece of home every now and then. It is 85 degrees outside so I am sitting in my boxers in the cockpit as I read. I want to point our how much fun it is to see everything the club is doing, Fred and Ursula is bringing in new members, Gary is paving the way for more fun in the future and Steve is leading the charge with his new boat and visionary ideas. And it sounds like Cheryl will be giving sailing lessons on the water before to long. The old and the new are blending together just fine. I can t believe I didn t think of having a Fun on Friday s party every week for the whole summer. What a great idea.! I know Don is doing a great job with the race program as he is the silent giant of the club. There are many things I miss, and having a drink at Crutsy s bar would be right up there. Crusty is a good bar tender as people under age will be scarred of him so no rules can be broken. Speaking of breaking rules, has Dan Walker bought a boat yet? And are we charging the Nelson s twice as they own two boats?. Maybe they could lend one to Dan and Karen. Becky could not have found a better person than Rob Crone to run the mainsheet, what a great publication. Keep up the good work Rob! Tonight it s a full moon and one of those very hot nights. I am again sitting in the cockpit of Kokomo in my boxers and thinking of the club. Dan Walker once told me La Paz was his and several club member s black hole. (place that they found so appealing they could not leave) well, we think Bahia Del Sol could be our black hole. We still have a whole world to sail and plan on doing just that, but at this point, we plan on returning to this place and travel to Mexico and Panama on alternating years for the winter, Then leave our boat here for the winter and return home to enjoy the comfortable summers of the pacific northwest. The cruisers that spend each year in Mexico and return to the states for the summer are missing the southern part of Mexico, Guatemala and El Salvador. These places are worth visiting. They are safe and glad to have visitors. We have never felt as welcome as we do in El Salvador. I hope the rest of the world wants us as bad as they do here. Also at $100 per month it s less expensive to leave your boat here than in the northern part of Mexico. It will be hard to leave here, but we will, and soon. Soon we start heading south into the thunder and lightning of Nicaragua and Costa Rica. I enjoy the challenge of new waters and anchorages to swim. I recently invested in a hooka dive system so I can clean the boat easier and hopefully I will be able to catch something to eat while I m diving. Take care CYCT! Denny

August 2011 Page 10 July Membership News Dear CYCT Members, it s hard to believe that July is almost over. We had a great turn out for the 3 rd of July party in Poulsbo. If I counted correctly 13 boats showed up and we are proud to say that we built a large raft. Judy and Roger Anderson started the raft by sailing to Poulsbo on Friday and reserved us a great spot for watching the fireworks. All who attended had the pleasure to meet some of our new July members in Poulsbo. Here are the names of our new July Members: Matt and Cristina Thomas with their children 13 and 12 years old. The Thomas family owns a J-29 with the name: Maria Cristina. Steve and Earline Cox and their children Andrew (7) and Nicole (6), they call their 30 Catalina Sean O Sea and have also two dogs who love being on the boat.. Kenneth and Julie St. John joined also CYCT in July. They sail a 27 Cal-Jensen. All three families live in Tacoma and are interested in Cruising and Social Events. We are proud to announce that CYCT has gained so far eight new Members in 2011 and we thank everybody who has spread the word about our Yacht Club and helped CYCT to grow. Soo Carter suggested at our last board meeting to have another Membership drive in September at the Tyee II dock with a barbeque and Marshmallows. I m happy to announce that the board also approved to waive the Membership Fee for the remainder of Therefore new Members will only have to pay the $ Initiation Fee. 12 August 2011 Page 12 How to Get and Keep a Good Crew Historical and psychological underpinnings as well as a handy how-to guide Ramming speed! The history of crewing Getting and keeping high quality, or even low quality, crew has been a problem for mariners going back to the invention of floating boats. The Romans, for example, desperately needed crew, not so much for Windseeker racing but more for conquering Sicily, which started with a tricky off-the-wind run. To give you an idea of how hard-up Roman skippers were to keep good crew, recall that Spartacus was only kept alive to Serve this ship! Presumably, without the chains holding his legs to the floor, Spartacus would have been off watching the kids, doing yard work, getting stuck in traffic and generally acting like today s free crew members, which is to say he wouldn t have been anywhere near the boat. Question: How can we get and keep crew members without having to chain them to the deck? The best way to get new crew members is to steal them from other boats. This has two advantages. First, you ll be up one crew member, and second, your racing competition will be down one crew member; thus, nicking crew members creates a tactically impressive two-crew-member gap for every one you steal! To recruit crew members for your boat off the decks of your competitors' boats requires that you understand the subtle motivations and psychology that bind crew members to your competitors' boats in the first place. Consider the powerful motivating force of belonging to a great team Your competitors' boats are bigger and faster than yours, they win all the time, their crews all have matching polo shirts with the collars turned up, and they sing Viking battle songs in unison as they leave the marina! You re probably wondering how you can compete with all of that? Hey, chin to the Windex, little sailor; you have a powerful weapon! Just remember: All you need is love. Love and the bloodthirsty game of Windseeker racing The only thing that you have to do to attract great crew members with questionable loyalty characteristics is to convince any prospective crew member that you, as skipper, are going to love him more than the sour and overbearing skipper that he is currently toiling under. Crew members respond to love like little flowers to sunlight, but how can you convince a crew member that you love him, you ask. What s the secret? Like so many things involving complex relationships, the secret is beer! A handy how-to guide Take last Wednesday night just before race time, for example. Across from my slip in Tyee 3 is a perfect crew candidate, an extraloyal crew member of a boat that we ll call Tatoosh. We ll call the candidate Brock. Brock is in a panic to get his gear off his boat so that he can make it over to Tatoosh in time to start slaving away to help them beat my boat. The picture of calmness, I approach Brock and say, Hi De Ho, Brock, and good pre-race greetings. What s the big rush? Brock sputters out a few words. I catch, Really mad, going to get it, probably have to clean the bilge. Nonchalantly I inquire, Say, what kind of beer are they serving over on Tatoosh? And then casually I raise a 12-oz. Alaskan Amber Summer Ale to my smiling lips with the label turned to the candidate. Is it this? I ask blandly. Brock drops a pile of life vests and cleaning products, and with mouth hanging open offers, Ahh, no! See there? Got one! Well, good luck. Remember to press your advantage at the marks, and when recruiting for crew at Tyee Marina, concentrate your efforts on Tyee 1, 2 and 4. Paul Case S/V Lucia

August 2011 Page 13 Sunshine Report Did you know. Its been a quite month. Don t forget you are my eyes and ears! Good news is also greatly appreciatedj! Sincerely, Sunshine Vaneva O Hara SV Sound Spirit vohara@cruisespecialists.com cell CYCT will conduct a hands on Man Overboard drill on Sunday Sept 11 from noon to 3 PM. The hands on activity will be followed by refreshments and a lessons learned discussion on the dock at the CYCT clubhouse in Tyee Marina. As we transition from the calm of summer sailing into the more aggressive weather of winter and fall, this is good time to remind ourselves of how to execute this potentially lifesaving task. If you plan to participate in this exercise please advise Chuck Welter, CYCT Education Chair by to ecwelter@hotmail.com or by phone at so he will know how many boats to plan for. Owners are encouraged to bring thier crews for this activity so everyone gets to practice these important skills. We are also recruiting MOB Victims to help conduct this training. The requirements to be a victim are that you must wear a dry suit or other suitable gear to play the role and be willing to get thrown off of boats repeatedly and dragged back aboard. Again if you are willing to help conduct this exercise, please contact Chuck so he will know who to count on. Regards all, Chuck
