The Commodore's Corner TTPYC Calendar of Events I can tell you as I look back and fondly remember my own father, rushing December home from his important and busy Winter Vashon Race TYC SSS-1 work, to drive the wrong way from Kent to Federal Way to the Renton General Membership Dinner & Sailing Club, to get there early to get Social Meeting a good Eltoro, and me waiting at the curb because it was "sailing day", and January his pride when I finally passed the sailing test and was Duwamish Head Race SSS-2 allowed to race with the "old people", and the first time I won the nightly race of some 20 boats, and the pride of my father General Membership Dinner & giving me the small blue wood Eltoro symbol for my Social Meeting personal plaque, and the fear, that an eight year old would Blake Island (Windjammer #1) be starting the race the next Wednesday weeknight and getting to skipper the 50 hp outboard Boston wailer to start February the race and keep track of the fleet. (they decided better General Membership Meeting & and imposed an age limit that night) I was hooked on the Social Meeting sport from that tender age of 8. It did take me 23 more years to convince my dad to buy our first big boat, the Toliva Shoal SSSS/OYC (SSS BOOMERANG, which my dad sailed in the TTPYC racing #3) for many years. Not because of luck or accident but because of hard work and a passion for giving that a few "dads and moms" have for sharing something they love. This past evening, three of many of the dedicated people who made the first year of the Des Moines Youth Sailing Classes happen were awarded a trophy and recognized by the sailing community and the city. These three each played an important role in pulling off the young sailor classes.

2 At the Des Moines City Council meeting, our own Mayor Bob Sheckler and sometimes main trimmer on Sweet Surrender (at least on one night on the MSSS) presented, along with the PIYA board members Jan Vissar, and Tom Schacht an international trophy for youth sailing training achievement. The award went to one member of each organization who made the training possible. Shelley Conti, our Race Fleet chair and organizer of the program, Joe Dusenbury, the Des Moines Marina Manager and Harbor Master, and Rick Edel who heads up training from the Power Squadron. Rick, with no notice organized an instructor class, and with funding from the city, got our TTPYC instructors trained and certified. That was a first step in the class. The second step was to get boats and students. That happened when under the urging of Joe, the city was able to purchase 4 boats from the well run Olympia Youth sailing program. Then Shelley got the rest organized, and the instructors and students all together for the classes. Along with a perpetual trophy that will be on display at Anthony's for this coming year, each received a personal plaque, and the youth sailing program foundation received a $500 donation from PIYA. The other instructors and helpers deserving recognition are Pat Waters, Gene Ellison, Davy Jones, Tom Davis, Steve Foss, Tom Hubbard, Mark Maynard, Mark Rider, Don Brame, and Malcome Grothe. An idea in the works for several years was born, planned, schemed, and without regard for all the reasons it could not happen, happened. This program will be popular, and will educate some 50 young people a summer on how to sail, and expose them to the ways and joys of "just messing around in boat". As the marina takes a more active role in the management of the program, we, the experienced sailors will now guide the paid staff on the care of the boats, how to fit and rig them, and we will benefit from this effort with a ready pool of young and fearless foredeckers for our "leadmine" boats, and we will all know that once again, the foresight of the TTPYC will have started a tradition in our community that is truly giving back. Maybe in 40 years one of those sailors will become the TTPYC Commodore, and remember the good old days of how he learned how to sail a boat. On the more business side of the club, we still are looking for a communications chair, and for a skipper to volunteer for the Opening Day Parade with their boat. The volunteer gets to pick from the many entry categories. The committees work from last year will soon be in front of you in the form of a vote for By-Laws updates, a bit of a new look for the yearbook, more information coming to you from the officers, the chance to be a part of the Seattle Boat Show selling our club at the Des Moines and TTPYC booth, being able to get involved in the Boats for Beds, and the next summers Mid Sound Social. Those committees are starting up and looking for participants, and helpers. If you have not picked your "one more thing", these might just be the ones for you. The tradition of excellent speakers at our monthly social meetings in now in the most capable hands of Joan Marie, and look for some really great events on most 2nd Tuesdays. I am inviting our members to offer photographs to be used for a new backdrop for the Anthony's bulletin board. Submittals are needed very soon, as a new backdrop will be needed for January. 3 SOCIAL CORNER JOAN MARIE Chair The new chair of the committee is Joan Marie, a new TTPYC member herself. She is enthusiastic and well organized. Look for more from Joan soon. CLUB DINNER AND HOLIDAY PARTY Come gather for some gemutlichkeit and holiday cheer at our usual time and place: Angelo s in Burien at 6pm on Tuesday, December 14. You are encouraged to bring a simple White Elephant for exchange. JANUARY 2011 DINNER MEETING We are privileged to host Brion Toss as our speaker on Tuesday, January11 at Angelo s (6pm dinner, 7pm presentation). Brion hails from Port Townsend and is a well-known expert yacht rigger. His stories are bound to educate and entertain. (Put it on your calendar now. See you there!) CRUISE CORNER Cruise Co-Chair Malcome & Katie Grothe Blog for our cruisers: cruisingwithttpyc. This is a great way to communicate on a variety of topics related to cruising. Be it planning your next short overnight cruise or an extended one. For those wanting inspiration for simple yet nutritious meal, this can be a good place to share with your fellow club members. A section for boat maintenance will be included and hopefully expanded upon. 4 RACE FLEET CORNER SHELLEY CONTI Race Fleet Captain GORDON KELLS-MURPHY Assistant Race Fleet Captain Winter Series concluded on November 20th. The wind strong, since we did not have a gauge on the boat, we were guessing 15 to 20 knots and the weather was dry! We got off three good races for the three boats that competed. Cherokee came in 1st for the series, with Les Chevaux Blancs coming in 2nd and Liberte 3rd, after having a few complications. Congratulations to all. Complete results can be found on our web site. With the completion of our 2010 race season we are now putting all out effort into preparing for the Duwamish Head Race on January 8th. We are continuing to have great support from our neighbors at Des Moines Yacht Club who have again agreed to host the pre-race breakfast on Saturday morning. They do a wonderful job and no doubt because of this there has been an increase in attendance for the breakfast every year. It s really becoming a tradition. Anthony s Home Port will again host our post race party. I don t personally remember how many years that Anthony s has done this but I can t remember when they haven t. When you head inside for lunch or dinner, let them know we appreciate their support. To me they have always been our pay as you go yacht club. I imagine you, like me, are really getting tired of the construction at the marina. This was supposed to be done, but may still impact guest moorage at the time of the Duwamish Head Race. We have been assured by the marina that they will be able to accommodate us but I think there is little doubt that we are going to need extra help greeting and parking boats and even parking cars the morning of the race. Last year Tom had all the information out to the racers in a timely fashion, and the docking and parking went great. This year, I think that we may need the same organization going that we had last year. We may very well need to have someone man the tenant boat launch since the marina launch is gone. I will be looking for volunteers. Give me a call and let me know how you can help ( ). Each year we sell T-shirts for the Duwamish Head Race. This year Tom Hubbard has designed the tshirts again. We will be selling long sleeve and short sleeve t-shirts and a few ¼-zip sweatshirts. I already have my dibs on a sweatshirt. The design is great! Look for them on our web site. 5 Committee Reports MID SOUND SUMMER SOCIAL Debra Valpey will be looking for volunteers to help with this committee soon. Let her know if you are interested in helping out. BOATS FOR BEDS EVENTS TOM HUBBARD, CHAIR KRISTIE BRAME, CO-CHAIR The planning for this year's Boats For Beds fundraiser for Hospitality House has begun. The Race will be on June 25. Participants will bid for their seats at the annual Hospitality House Auction that will take place March 5. A second event will feature a sunset cruise on power boats, coordinated by the Power Squadron, on July 7. They will cruise and watch the first Mid-Sound Summer Social Race and then join us for the party following the event. We are still looking for boats, so if you want to participate on either day, contact Tom or Kristie. NEW FEATURE! THE CHEAP SAILOR'S CORNER: WAYS TO SAVE ON YOUR BOATING PURCHASES: David Garmin Commodore Previous Tips: don't forget in Fisheries Supply, tell them you are a member of TTPYC and get your TTPYC discount. This can be sizeable and worth the extra drive to Seattle. Last month, Gordon and others organized a pool of boat owners in Des Moines Marina to hire a bottom diver to regularly clean the bottoms of the boats at a significant price reduction from having it done separately. Contact Gordon to get in on the discount. This month, I want to tell you about a mail-order marine supply for Stainless Steel Parts. This importer buys in volume from China, investment cast Stainless Parts. If you don't need ultimate strength, these parts are high quality, and serviceable, and the metallurgy, the stainless steel part is high quality. I have purchased shackles, cleats, snap-shackles, chain, latches, hooks, clasps, hinges and rigging from them and been happy each time. You can sometimes get even better deals if you phone them, and ask for the best price.
